Mod News Just getting started in VO? Dont know where to begin? READ THIS FIRST

Welcome to r/VoiceActing!

First of all, we get asked the question, "how do I get started in VO?" a lot.

Seriously: A lot.

There's a lot of information below that answers that question, but PLEASE read this first.

This subreddit is for established, new and aspiring voice actors to discuss issues, share tips, strategies, critiques and resources related to voice acting.

This is a good community, and rude or obnoxious behavior will not be tolerated. If you cant act like a grown-up and remain civil in your conversations, you'll be removed from the sub. Personal attacks, threats of violence/abusive language, or bigotry in any form will not be tolerated.

THE RULES:

* **No Free Requests**

All requests for voice work must be reasonably compensated. Terms of compensation must be articulated in your request. Acceptable forms of compensation include:

Monetary ($5.00 USD minimum)

Barter (services exchange)

Royalty share (only on currently monetized projects—no prospective payment).

Unpaid requests will be removed. If your project is unpaid, try posting to r/recordthisforfree, VoiceActing Club, or

CastingCall.Club.

* **No Offer Posts**

Do not make posts offering your voice or production services. If you’re looking for work, respond directly to request threads. Simply put, this is not an appropriate community to solicit. Requests for feedback/critique are welcome!

* **No Advertising**

Do not post advertisements for paid products or services. We love articles, blog posts, feedback/critique threads, and other great points of discussion! But if your post includes advertisement for a paid product or service, it will be removed. If you believe a certain product or service would be of genuine interest and benefit to the community, message the moderators about it.

* **Search Before You Ask**

Got a general question about voice acting? How to get started? What gear to buy? How to get better at acting? How to find work? These get asked all the time around here, and plenty of our more experienced community members give graciously detailed answers very frequently. There’s a lot of wisdom to find here if you’re just getting started! Before you post your question, use the search bar and see if others have asked the same thing—they probably have!

Just getting started?

Booth Related Hot mic, hot box 🥵

A question for any “blanket booth” users. I got this booth a while back to help with sound isolation since I live in an apartment. Love this setup and collapsable booth… except for one thing.

-cue dramatic stinger-

It gets so Damned Hot! 🥵
Any advice of how best to keep cool with these? So far, just using a fan with remote between a set of takes. This is not so bad in the winter but summer… oooo boy that sucked.

Advice Breath sounds are not a dealbreaker

I learned today from a YouTube video that people are so angry with AI voices that breath sounds are not a bad thing because they make you sound human.

So maybe, don’t worry about the occasional breath.

PAID work [PAID] Looking for Voice Actors for 2D Animated student film!

Hello all! I’m currently seeking out three voice actors for my upcoming student film! It’s a very short (1.5min) animated work, and I really want to have solid voices to help it feel more real! You’ll also receive whatever credits you’d prefer on the finished film :)

Character descriptions:

- A very tired slightly-sadistic doctor in his mid 20’s. He has a more monotone, professional sounding cadence. Male voice pref.

9 lines total

- An androgynous character in their mid 20’s who is a thrill seeker and a bit of a freak! He’s excitable and extroverted, a bit of a foil to the doctor. androgynous/masc voice pref.

5 lines total

- A charming yet dangerous cult leader. He’s meant to sound slightly seductive and mature, being in his 40’s. Deeper male voice pref.

5 lines total

-

Rate: $20 per role, negotiable!

Length: ~1 minute of finished audio per role

Language: English

Voice preferences: American accents, bonus points for slight New Yorker accents.

Takes: I’d prefer to have 2-3 takes per line

Payment: Handled primarily through Paypal, can be discussed!

Deadline: I’d like to have everyone cast in the next two weeks so I can time out the storyboard with the proper voices!

I will say the first two characters do have some homoerotic dynamic, so if that makes you uncomfortable this likely isn't the best project for you!

If interested please reply with/dm me your portfolio!

Advice Has anyone done The Voiceover Blueprint with Mike Hathcote?

I have been researching a lot about Voice acting online which lead me to Mike Hathcote and his program The Voiceover Blueprint. The program claims to be the largest voiceover training program in the world but I’ve been having trouble finding reviews or testimonials about it anywhere besides their website. If anyone has tried the program or has anymore information on the quality of it then I would greatly appreciate it. Also the price is around $2700 for a full year but since I’m somewhat new I’m genuinely not sure if that’s expensive or cheap for this kind of training. Thank you for reading and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Advice Closing Credits Voice Acting 101 Question

Has anyone taken Voice acting 101 with Jamil Burger and Joe Goffeney
from Closing Credits/ Casting Call? I've been researching voice acting classes and they seem to be the best match for what I'm looking for. Decent value and they provided feedback on your voice. A lot of voice acting classes are expensive and I'm scared to make such a big investment on something I might not be good at. One thing I’d like to know is how big are the class sizes? If it’s too big, I feel like I won’t get enough feedback or if you took the class was the size no issue? Also if anyone has good suggestions for voice acting classes that are similar but you think might be better I’d love to hear them.

Advice Microphone positioning during recording and where should I be speaking

Hey everyone, I'm an amateur doing this just for fun — no plans to publish or go pro. I mainly want to share recordings with my tabletop roleplay group, so I'm just after a clean, consistent setup.
My setup:
Mic: Røde NT1 Signature
Interface: Focusrite Scarlett Solo

A few specific things I'm wrestling with:
Plosives/pops — I keep getting those harsh "p" and "b" bursts. How do I tame them?

Mic distance — how far should I be from the mic? I can't seem to land on a consistent spot.
Mic position relative to my mouth — should the mic be dead-center in front, off to the side, above and angled down? Not sure where to place it.
Where to direct my voice — should I speak straight into the mic, or just past it?

Demo feedback What do you think of my voice?

Hey,

I’d really appreciate honest feedback on my demo. It includes a light, friendly advert read plus audiobook and documentary narration.

I'd love to know: what words would you use to describe my voice, what age do you hear, and which categories do you think I'm best suited to?

Demo here

Thanks!

Note to mods: I did already post but got no comments so reposting, hope that’s okay!

Discussion Just a curious question

I've got this question on my mind ever since I started doing voice acting but I wanna ask y'all first before I can say that what I'm thinking is right, what made y'all start voicing in the first place? I mean yeah we got amazing voices(compliments to y'all) but asides the voice and the money, what else made y'all do voice acting?

P.S

I'm new to this and I'm in a trio VA group with two amazingly gifted peeps in which we just started a few days ago

Advice Microphones?

Hello guys. I'm 22, college student with not a lot of money to spare on insanely good audio setups but I'm very interested in starting a career as a VA. Any recommendations for some decent budget microphones? If you also have tips in general about literally anything, from how to get started, to how to process audio, etc, I'd gladly receive it.

Advice What’s the actual roadmap to professional voice acting?

I recently tried getting into voice acting in the YouTube space because I have personal experience in YouTube voice overs. After sending maybe 10 demo reels I’ve landed 2 clients with recurring work. It’s more about narration/vo rather than any acting. I’m super thankful to be where I’m at but the dream is to act in an animated production. What’s the path to get to that level?

Booth Related Studio Bricks + Structural Engineer Assessment?

Hi folks who have studio bricks!

We just purchased a home and are ready to finally make the leap from my own retrofitted rental set up to something I can live in with longevity. I'm leaning toward the One XXL VO edition, because the space seems luxurious, and in for a penny, in for a pound, but she is HEAVY (1500lbs!) Our foundation inspection told us that it's in really great shape-- but I didn't think to ask about this while they were there. Curious if anyone here has one of these and if they hired a structural engineer to assess the situation before purchasing? We'll be putting it on the first floor and then eventually moving it to an ADU in the back once we have some money to invest in building one, so no concerns with a second floor, but I'm curious if this a step I shouldn't skip to keep my house happy.

Thanks for any advice or relevant experience! :)

Advice Voice actors who record regularly: how do you keep performances from feeling repetitive?

I've been doing voice work professionally for a few years, and one thing I've been thinking about lately is how to keep performances feeling fresh when you're recording frequently. I have my usual preparation and recording routines, but I'm always curious how other performers approach this. Do you change up your warmups, experiment with different character objectives, take more breaks, or have another method for keeping things spontaneous?

Advice Been working with VO coaches for a year hoping to turn voice work from a dream into a reality. Just got back my first professionally-produced demo reel. I welcome any feedback, advice, or other thoughts!

The dream is of course to do games and animation. I’m not opposed to other work like audiobook and commercial, but I do have a steady and salaried 9-5 career and am willing to be a little more selective than someone for whom VO work needs to be their entire income.

Thoughts on the demo? Thoughts on agency representation? Do I just strike out on my own on CCC, Voices, and V123?

Discussion New to casting call club, how do I get people to choose me?

Hey, I'm a 14y old so my options are already limited because of my age. I have no experience and not enough money to afford a teacher or lessons. I don't believe spamming requests under every project would work as most of the projects have 20+ people already signing up for it. Should I keep looking for a project that has almost no one signed up for it? I don't see why, from the project owner's perspective, they'd hire a person with no experience and very little skill in voice acting. Though I'd say my mic quality is at least decent or good quality. Am I overthinking this to much or do you guys have a method for choosing which projects to join?

Advice Recommend any voice training apps/tutorials for louder/ deeper voice?

Not a voice actor, but hoping this community might know resources. I am a small adult - about the size of an average 12 year old. I have a fairly high pitched voice, not super quiet, but possibly combined with being child-size (and a woman), I am often not heard in groups/ noisy environments and can't really speak louder. I also would like to train to speak lower, to sound like an adult.

I'm familiar with the concept of projection and resonance. What are some good resources for exercises to help with these? Ideally an app where I can progress through exercises and make a habit of actually doing them.

Advice Renewal fees for old work

Not sure if this is allowed on this sub, I really have no idea where to post this, but I did some work for a larger company that was booked through voices123 around 5 years ago. The rates and renewal fees were pre negotiated.

Well the advertising company that ran the ads has just reached back out to me as they are wanting to renew the commercial. They are asking me to give them my costs for 2 different renewal options:

Territory for both options: Global/Worldwide

Option 1 - Linear, Digital (OLV, OTT, CTV) and all social

Option 2 Digital (OLV, OTT, CTV) and all social

I have absolutely no idea what going rates for something like this should be, if anyone has any insight/advice it would be greatly appreciated!!

Please DM if necessary.

Advice Actors who follow up quarterly with previous clients, what do you say?

Are you updating them only when you have something useful for them? What would even qualify as useful info for a previous client? "Hello Adobe, here is a summary of 3 months of work and training since last we connected!" Would love to know what folks are doing to stay "top of mind" with their clients without just spamming inboxes every few months with a "I still exist and want more work!" message.
