IMO, Teacher/Director is not good.
I just needed to vent this one out but my theater teacher/director is not a good teacher. At all. I’m attempting to give them patience and time, but after dealing with them for almost 3 months in, I’m fed up. They are treating us like middle schoolers, and constantly complains about stuff that was not our fault. They wouldn’t let anyone into costume/set shop unless they were there (which most of the time they’re not) and would always threaten to call home every time something doesn’t go their way. I am not the one to compare people or tell them how to do their jobs. However, I would rather choose my old teacher than to sit in the classroom with my current teacher.
(P.S. for our show, I was put in understudy/ensemble. After a couple of times of asking who I was understudying for, they have always pushed it aside. After one of my friend (who’s main role) told them about possible quitting, my friend offered for me to be understudy for the character but my teacher said they rather delete the character than have me filled in. I don’t mind being ensemble, but the fact that they said this is.. sorta weird.)
(P.S.S. I missed rehearsal for one day. The next day I did my normal routine during full run. Towards the end I apparently was supposed to be in the scene but I never knew because they went over this the day I wasn’t here. Teacher just looked at me disappointed even though they never told me anything.)

Best responses to "Oh, only ensemble?"
Hiya!
I want to know what your best responses are to someone saying "oh, you're only in the ensemble?" And things similar in that icky tone that is unappreciative of the ensemble.
I've been getting a lot of ensemble roles recently and whenever I tell someone thats not into theatre they respond with that sentence, so I wanna know what your best responses to it is!

Franklin Shepherd Inc. for Company Audition?
galleryI’m currently working on an audition package for a local theatre production of Company, and I’m worried about one of my song choices. I am a 24F going for the role of Amy and one of the requirements is to bring in a patter song if you want to be considered for her. I picked this song because I wanted a masc song to counter my fem song since the casting will probably be very fluid. I also just think it matches the energy of “I’m Not Getting Married” rather well. It’s also just fun and I love the song. I am just worried that the poor accompanist is going to hate me. But also, it’s a Sondheim show so you better damn well believe I am bringing in my Sondheim cuts because when else would I get to? My plan is to email my cut to the point of contact so that the accompanist can take a look if they would like to. I am also fully prepared to say, “I don’t want to assume your ability, but if you could at least play the left hand that would be awesome.” Or something like that at least. I also feel confident that I can push through and tune out the accompaniment if something goes horribly wrong during my audition. Maybe it’s just a horrible idea all together. What do I do????

Is it weird to transpose a tenor song to an alto or mezzo key for an audition?
I'm worried there is an unspoken rule, because I personally have never seen anyone do this. For context, I kinda want to bring Giants in the Sky for a Matilda audition, hoping for any of the child roles. But to better fit my voice and the show, I would transpose it to a mezzo key. I know i can sing it well, it's one of my favorite to sing. but I don't want to throw off the directors. Yes, people transpose audition cuts all the time, but Im wondering if there's a reason this is not as common.

What happened to the cast of Little Shop at the high school is such a tragedy!!!
If you haven't heard, the district got scared about drag show laws in TX and canceled the show because their Seymour was female! These kids are victims of performative politics and it makes me sick!
If you were part of the show and see this im very sorry that a bunch of old dudes who wouldnt know art if it jumped up and bit them in the face, ruined the magic of theater. Its a shame. As a female tenor if I couldnt get cast for a male presenting lead I would never get a lead part!

From the Netherlands: A little Come From Away story, and a request for help ❤️
Hi CFA community! ❤️
I’m reaching out from Haarlem, the Netherlands, because I thought this community might understand why this production means so much to us.
Our community theatre group, Musicalgroep The Cast, has spent a year preparing to perform Come From Away. Just three weeks before opening night, our theatre was damaged by a fire.
We managed to find a new venue, and our performances on October 23 and 24 can still go ahead! But moving an entire production at such short notice has created significant unexpected costs for our theatre group.
One of the things I love about Come From Away is its message that people can come together and help one another when life takes an unexpected turn. Now we’re hoping to experience a little of that kindness ourselves.
We’ve started a GoFundMe to help cover the additional costs. If you’d like to support our production, any donation would mean so much to us. And if donating isn’t possible, sharing our story would help us reach others who might be able to help.
Thank you for keeping the spirit of Come From Away alive around the world. ❤️

Audition nerves are my downfall
Hi! First time poster here so apologies if this breaks any rules somehow. Is it just me that finds that I am so nervous during an audition I can’t think clearly and mess up in some way? For reference, every audition I talk about is with a community theatre company. I just had a callback today for the Wicked Witch of the West in Wizard of Oz (a miracle honestly as my initial audition was horrible), and totally flunked it. I have been preparing since the production company gave out information two weeks ago and had the scene learnt fully, but as soon as I got into the room I stumbled on words and forgot the lines and had to be prompted. This has happened at all of my previous auditions and callbacks as well, and ultimately ends with me getting casted in smaller roles with one or two lines. I don’t think the problem is performing in front of the casting team, as during rehearsals and the actual performances I am completely confident and capable, it’s just the actual audition. The one ‘lead’ role I have managed to land was casted with a video audition I sent in (which got me Paulette in Legally Blonde) which went exactly as I hoped. I’m pretty bummed out as I was really excited before the callback but now I think I’ve ruined my shot at the role. I have done musicals with this company before and they know my acting and singing capabilities so I’m hoping they take some of that into account when casting. If you have any tips or tricks to overcoming crazy nerves please comment them!!!!

Your opinions on Dracula.
This probably won't apply to most people, but im going to Dublin soon to see Dracula at the Gaiety Theatre and wanted your opinions on if you've seen it there, how was it? And if you havent but you've seen another Dracula show, your opinions on how it was verus how it compares to other Dracula plays/ musicals. I love old Gothic stories and wondered how the plays compare to each other and the original book.

Does anyone know of a music program with a "multiple loop" feature we could try with our production?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Apologies in advance if this is the incorrect subreddit to ask this. I’m cross posting on a few subreddits to try and find what I’m looking for, but I’m unsure as to how to describe it or if it even exists.
So for context I’m currently a part of a small troupe trying to put on their first show with very minimal funding. We don’t think we’re going to be able to stretch our budget for a band, and the songs in the show we’re doing have a lot of moments where pauses between verses can and will vary depending on the night. (IE: script calls for actors to improv, the pause/instrumental loop and dialogue length don’t match up well, etc.)
Usually, this problem would be solved by having a live band and conductor, but we can’t do that. We also have tried rehearsing with the official backing tracks provided and it’s not going great to say the least.
Basically what I’m asking is, does anyone know of a music program we may be able to recreate the backing tracks in that has multiple looping functions? Or even a sound editor we could splice the provided tracks into? That way, we can have a sound guy just hit a button to end a loop with it still sounding clear. I’ve put a short midi into Soundtrap to demonstrate around what I’m thinking, the only issue is that Soundtrap only has one loop available and it seems to “jump” a little whenever I turn the looping function off/on.
TD;DR: Any program with multiple loop feature, preferably one that could be activated automatically and/or with keybinds/outside equipment?

ADVICE - MT performers
I’m currently conducting research for my Master’s degree in performance psychology. The study focuses on musical theatre performers, and I’m hoping to reach as many potential participants as possible.
I was wondering if anyone could recommend any forums, Facebook groups, communities, or other platforms where I could share my research and recruit participants from the musical theatre community.
(Reddit won’t let me post the survey link)
