Watercolor Signage Help

Hi everyone!

I am doing some hand painted signage for my wedding next year, one as like a welcome sign and the other for a seating chart display. I'd like to mount them to something with some firmness so they do not droop over or fall over where they are displayed.

Note, these are for one day use at a wedding - they don't need to be professionally mounted or built to last a lifetime. I'm not going to lose sleep over some imperfections.

I could use some advice from those of you with experience in this area:

  • Any recommendations on what to use to mount them? Gatorboard/foamboard? Specific brand suggestions are appreciated.
  • Best way to adhere the paper to the mounting surface? 3M photo mount spray?
  • I also see that pre-mounted watercolor panels are available. Is this the better way to go? I am nervous about this because if I screw it up, I can't just start with new paper.
  • If you use these panels - any suggestions for brands that won't break the bank?

In case it matters:

  • I'm trying to keep the cost of supplies (excluding paint & paint pens) under $150 if possible.
  • I haven't chosen specific paper yet but assume 140lb cotton cold press.
  • Estimated sizes - likely one will be 16x24 and the other 20x30 range. This part is flexible based on what materials I choose.

Really appreciate any and all suggestions. I am still a beginner and so excited to have a few things I paint be used on this special day.

I’m trying a much more detailed drawing to start this painting again. Maybe I need better structure. I’ve been trying to just feel the trees. Also I moved the house closer and pushed some trees out of the frame. Wish me luck

Help! Damn trees

I’ve been doing some pretty successful home portraits for the past couple weeks but my newest I tried to set in a bunch of trees and….i can’t paint trees. I’m worried I’ve ruined this and can’t finish and will need to start over. I’ve tried so many tree tutorials and one issue I keep having is people are mostly painting small gestural trees not these massive ones. I don’t know what to do!

Watercolor workshops

I’ve taken a few online zoom classes with popular watercolor teachers (they also write books and put out videos) and thought about trying a workshop in person with someone new. Some teachers/workshops are very expensive, not including hotels.

I don’t know if this is a good question but are there any in person workshops you thought were worth the high price tag because of level of instruction and feedback, or conversely you felt workshop was over hyped and over-priced for value.

I’d say I’m an intermediate to advanced watercolor artist, who enjoys learning.

Thanks if you have thoughts on this.
