My first attempt at a night sky and a lighthouse.
My boyfriend is a night photographer and he gave me permission to use any of his photos as references. This was my first try.

This cat is frustrating me.
galleryApparently getting a cat's likeness is no easier than getting a person's 😹 These go in reverse order, most recent first.
My main issue is that no matter how hard I try to start out loose, I end up really tight by the end trying to get the facial markings.
I'm not crazy about the colors in this one, it's Green gold, yellow ochre, quinacridone magenta and indanthrene blue and I think it turned out too yellow and less orangey than the previous ones.
But the proportional divider is at least getting me closer to the cat's likeness! Used that in the most recent version. And I do like the way the fur on the cat's back turned out.

Favourite real time tutorials?
Hello! I have been using Anna Buccarelli's real-time paintalongs on Patreon and it has seriously upped my game. I used to try follow along with people like Paul Clark on YT but it just went too fast as it is sped up and condensed. I love how Anna Buccarelli is very slow and narrates every single minute step.
Any suggestions for other real time tutorials? :) willing to subscribe on Patreon if it is very good. Interested in all subject matter but more interested in slowly developing intermediate skill than quick beginner 'hacks' if you get me :)

Soft, splotchy, abstract background ideas
galleryHi guys,
I really love the look of soft, blown-out colors acting as a minimalist "background" to paintings with a single subject. I've attached a couple of photos here of pretty much exactly what I'm talking about. (I found these pics on pinterest; not sure of the original source unfortunately.)
I would really love to learn more about this technique and others like it. But I'm kind of stuck, because I don't know what this is called! Can anyone get me on the right track? Thanks in advance.

Eastern Bluebirds are always such a joy to paint. What’s your favorite bird to spot in your backyard or paint on paper?

Kora, my best ever dog nose
Thanks to learning from you all here I’ve been trying more lifting to improve my dog noses and it’s working! Level up, woof woof!
Here’s tonight’s finished work. The left eye got messed up and I could it quite restore it, but otherwise I think this is one of my better attempts so far.

Made this tool for choosing watercolors! (Does it already exist?)
I wanted to decide on a good "sky blue" that's non-granulating so of course I needed to introduce all possible options. You can filter and sort by brand, pigment, granulation, transparency, hue, iridescence and see all the swatches side by side.
Palette Scout: https://palettescout.art/
Edit - a lot of kind folks have provided other websites that already existed that do the same thing (more paint brands, other types besides watercolor, lots of cool stuff) - if there's anything that I could add to this that would be helpful to anyone, LMK!
