User Equipment Picture Don't tell my wife how much it cost
HDD prices for NAS and NVR are a real pain.
If you're interested, I can describe the equipment topology, share photos of the rack, etc.

Welcome to the weekly thread that covers everything off topic, fluff, etc!
Feel free to post anything to this thread, as long as it has some relation to Ubiquiti - pictures, rants, whines, complaints, easy small questions you don’t want to make a whole post for, or even just sharing the picture of your cat sitting on top of your EdgeRouter!
Only rules here are to be civil, no personal attacks, etc stuff like that.
Have a great week everyone!

Hey Everyone,
I recently wantes to purchase the Unifi UPS 2U but Noticed Ubiquiti charges 25€ (~28 USD) "Memory Surcharge".
I completely understand why they implemented this system rather then raising the prices outright.
But why would they do it on a device that does not have any meaningful amount of Memory?
Is there a way to correct it?
Thanks!
Edit: I know that it has some ram 🙄 but the amount is not specified i am guessing ~256mb or even less. That doee NOT justify charging 25€ extra.

Attached are photos of a client site. It is a residence approx 4200sqft. Their primary complaint is WiFi feels a bit slow at times, leading to YouTube buffering and whatnot. When I look on the backend everything seems perfectly fine, except a low percentage of tx retries. What do yall think might be the issue?
6gh disabled last night to keep signal strengths high.
Edit: how do I add photos?? Grr
DNS has been updated per recommendation to Googles exclusively.
I think the culprit maybe that one of the APs, a U7 Outdoor is connecting at E rather than GbE. Time to replace a short cable…I
Final edit: turns out the issue really stemmed from an AP connecting at E, or what’s rated for 10mbps. 4K on yt requires 20, ideally 25mbps. Nonetheless I did suspect AP overcrowding might’ve been contributing as well. In the end with y’all’s insight I tackled 2 different issues pertaining to the same network. Thanks to everyone that contributed!!!

A small wing of the company I work for has been slowly migrating away and we're excited to get their own network, and through some various tactics I convinced them to go this way with things.
Needless to say I'm very excited to play with new toys.

Is that too much the ask?

Also known as a rack not full of strictly Ubiquiti products.
Recently completed a network refresh and rack update with changeover to Ubiquiti. Other equipment throughout the house is (1) U7 Pro XG, (2) Flex Mini 2.5G (media stand, wife's office) and (1) Flex 2.5G PoE (my office).
Patch panels and UPS are pre-existing, re-purposed a rackmount.it RM-FR-T14 (with keystone swap to white) for UCG Fiber, filler plates and PDU are new. While it would have looked cool to be all Ubiquiti silver and I'm not against overkill, I had no interest in throwing away money just for looks.
OS2 SMF optics and cables are ipolex brand from Amazon (owned by 10Gtek, same exact stuff with different name on sticker) except for a Fibergaga industrial armored cable running through my attic for the Pro Max 16 PoE to Flex 2.5G PoE uplink. Only downside I've found so far with the ipolex/10Gtek optics is that I don't get any optical levels in the controller, even though these optics support DDM. They do perform as expected at 10G.
In the future, I will swap all my Wyze wifi cams to UniFi PoE and will add UNVR (or G2) and a second Pro Max 16 PoE as I'll need more ports than the single switch will provided. I could have met total port capacity needs after camera swap with a single Pro Max 24 PoE, but I opted to go down the two switch route as its less money spent upfront, and I have switch redundancy.

I just learned about these things, Matter being the home automation/IoT standard, and Thread being essentially an IP based networking for IoT devices over the non-Wifi 2.4GHz radio system that works with it.
Neat stuff.
Updates from Ubiquiti a few days ago, specifically the SuperLink Gateway HA, the new one, has a Thread radio setup (with the loss of Bluetooth support, as it would cause interference) and recently the addition of pairing codes for Matter device awareness. The next thing they mention in the update is "For the first time, visualize IP and Thread devices together in UniFi Topology, with custom alerts and powerful tools for troubleshooting connectivity." suggesting continued Matter over Thread support.
In terms of implementation of Thread, the newer Apple Home... stuff, supports this type of connectivity. The brand "eve" of IoT home automation devices operates on this type of connectivity. A few other big companies have or are developing systems that support these standards.
So, the proprietary SuperLink standard is still ISM band, but on the baby-monitor-band (915MHz) rather than actual WiFi (2400MHz/2.4GHz). About as much data as you can pack in to bandwidth without a license or being wifi/2.4GHz. A benefit is you can encrypt it over air legally, which is not the case with many other open or available radio bands. And the Matter over Thread is essentially the same type of "baby monitor band" style of use, but is in the 2.4GHz range, and can therefore pack way way more data. The IPv6 base of the system, I would suppose, means that there is some level of encryption/handshake/privacy? Similar to the benefit of simple encryption over 915MHz.
I'm really eager to see how home automation and IoT connectivity develops through these standards and systems, but I'm also very curious what everyone thinks about these moves. Will it work? Will it be awesome? In outdoor settings, will connectivity go out when it rains really hard? Will this help support scientific data collection efforts like USGS water flow data and other sensors?
What other higher-data processes do you want to see work on these systems? What type of devices would integrate well on these standards with the Unifi ecosystem for home and enterprise/campus deployments?
What do you think?
EDIT: A lot of good comments from different sides of the aisles. I personally was considering a top-down, all Unifi network, including cameras and entry sensors/other security and home sensing, but I was personally waiting to pull the trigger on getting sensors and the SuperLink Gateway, since the new gateway might be really cool. But, I am considering that I should look more widely other companies producing different types of sensors... lots of them cheaper, surely, and perhaps just as good at connecting to any network with all the new communication protocols and radio systems that support them.
Had another thought, regarding Reticulum... sort of like Meshtastic/MeshCore communicators, that is a system that operates on 915MHz, but can also utilize 2.4GHz WiFi and Bluetooth, and potentially other methods to communicate. As far as I can tell it's kind of terrible and not built out and it's kind of open source, so probably not stable as it stands, but the idea of cross-device, cross-system communication to build a unified network is compelling and feels tangentially related to the 915MHz/2.4GHz non-wifi ISM band activities that these home automation-IoT companies are doing. There is so so so much 2.4GHz equipment, radios, antennas floating around, it would be almost stupid to not reuse them for something modern. Plus we all need higher fidelity WiFi sensing in our lives :)

@ubiquiti.. if you’re listening.. across all your product lines… in alarm manager… and, at a minimum… we need to know before any device update is about to occur and when any device is back online after that update.. full stop..
You can view some details in the logs, but notifications/webooks are way better. Nice to have: also would be nice to know after an unscheduled unifi device reboot, etc. My god.. the year is 2026 and we have zero native notification insight into when things go down or come back up from upgrades in our own tooling. Yes, it’s scheduled to look for the update, but we need to know when there are issues with that update. Assumptions shouldn’t be made. Especially important in the AI frontier armageddon era we’re all in today. We need to setup/schedule daily updates for sure. We just need to know if something has been offline for 2 or more hours and if it was because of a hung update or something else. I can certainly monitor external facing ip uptime via some other service on my ip, if I have to, but internally is a real ball buster right now. I don’t know if anything went offline for a prolonged time because it was unplugged, fried itself, or it was a just a failed update, etc. Generally it’s been the update so far and a cold boot fixes, thankfully. Would even be nice to get a notification if the update was a success or not. I know we’re all hammering the update servers, so I expect update failures or even prolonged downloads, etc., but I truly appreciate your software and hardware solutions.
General public, please let me know if I, or my Claude/Chat GPT, sessions etc. have overlooked anything from the above in alarm manager, including on EA releases..

I'll try to keep this concise, but last night my wife and I heard a voice in my kids room (attached video) through our intercom. Completely freaked me out, more so because I believe the only place it could have come from is the UniFi Cameras.
Ive been looking at logs and sending Claude through them and everything is coming back clean.

Normally, seeing logs and confirming no strange behavior would put me at ease, but that still doesn't answer the question of, where the hell did the voice come from??

Got the home setup cleaned up and everything tucked into a 15U cabinet. Matching silver gear, short patch cables, and just enough room left to make more questionable financial decisions.
The setup:
UniFi Pro UniFi Power Distribution
Pro Max 16 PoE switch
UniFi Dream Machine Pro SE
AC Infinity rack cooling
UniFi UNAS Pro 8 with 4 x 24TB Toshiba N300 Pro drives
Two U7 Pro XGS access points, mounted elsewhere
Eufy NVR and Cameras
HP laptop running Ubuntu, hosting my AI assistant, home assistant, Immach, Jellyfin and other home lab things.
Internal rack air stays around 20–24°C. Currently using it for networking, cameras, and self-hosted photo storage, with a personal Netflix setup on the to-do list.
Pretty happy with how it came together. Rate the rack, tell me what you'd change.

Flair: whine / complaint, though I'm not really bothered. Just hoping some of the following come to fruition.
I've been on the cusp of moving off my current home security "solution", and have stopped myself from pulling the "buy now" trigger a couple of times. FWIW, here's my list of needs and wants that would nudge me over the line.
I run both Home Assistant and Scrypted to bridge into Apple Home. I don't want or need family and some guests inside UniFi apps; it's just easier this way for some of my "end users". The tumbleweeds drifting across Ubiquiti's sad, lonely public GitHub are a massive missed opportunity. Shipping these so they're "natively" installable on Unifi gear, but opening up the pieces under a suitable OSS license (with Ubiquiti retaining governance, SDLC), would let the community build and maintain them beyond what Ubiquiti seems inclined to invest in directly. Roughly prioritized:

I had random IoT devices disconnect from my Unifi network within one hour of each other. No one was at home at the time this happened. Wife and I were working and the kids were in school. I had about 25 devices disconnect. Light switches, thermostats, WLED controllers and so on and none of them have come back online. They are all greyed out.
I have a USG gateway and U6-LR AP's in the house. I have cycled power to my Unifi devices and some of the affected IoT devices, but have not been able to bring them back online. I'm pulling what little hair I have on my head out over this one as I have no idea where to start. Any ideas?

Just upgraded from UNAS 2 to UNAS Pro and am thinking I may have outgrown the mini racks and could move to a full size rack cabinet.
Maybe a 19inch rack cabinet and a shelf inside that the mini rack could sit on. Anyone done anything like this?

Need to fix network in upstairs office in my rental home, pulled to much wife aggro. In addition, I hope to buy a home next year (Yes, I know about the economy).
That being said I want something for now and to be used in a new place with room for expansion and future needs.
Since it is a rental I don't really have great choice to bring PoE cable upstairs, downstairs is simple enough that I can get some laid on edges of flooring/behind furniture. Currently have a 1 GB Fiber Verizon Fios with their default router/WIFI. Unsure if I want to set it to bridge or just to straight from ONT.
Currently list includes:
Dream Machine Pro Max
Pro Max 16 PoE
U7 Pro XG (x2)
G3 Instant
Plan is to connect the 1st floor U7 PRO XG through cable and the 2nd floor set second U7 Pro XG as mesh. The G3 instant is for baby camera, wanting to get rid of our current one for privacy.
Is the coverage going to be that bad on the second floor?
Any thoughts or suggestions?
Not totally concerned about cost or practicality of AP choices (a E7 does seem a bit crazy though) as its an investment into what I could have in a new home.

I have a client who has an existing Comlit doorbell/displays that he wants to get rid of. We just installed 3 ubiquiti cameras and figured a doorbell is the best solution for this. The thing is I cant figure out a good way to display the feed when someone rings the bell. Ideally we can have 2 way communication as well. Is iPad on the wall the way?
