Part One Part 1 is the best
Part 1 of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood is the best because it gives the entire series its foundation while telling a genuinely powerful story about good versus evil, family, honor, and sacrifice. Jonathan Joestar is one of the most underrated protagonists in anime because he represents what it truly means to be a gentleman. He is kind, honorable, courageous, and willing to put others before himself, even when the world gives him every reason to become bitter. Unlike protagonists who rely on arrogance, revenge, or a desire for power, Jonathan fights because he believes it is the right thing to do. His goodness makes him an incredibly likable character, and watching him remain true to his values despite everything he suffers makes his journey meaningful.
Another reason Part 1 is the best is the relationship between Jonathan and Dio Brando. Their rivalry is the heart of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, and it begins with something deeply personal: two brothers who could not be more different. Jonathan represents compassion, integrity, and humanity, while Dio represents ambition, cruelty, and the desire to stand above everyone else. Dio doesn't simply want to defeat Jonathan; he wants to destroy everything Jonathan stands for. Their conflict feels so compelling because it starts in childhood and grows into something much larger than either of them. Dio's jealousy and hatred make him an incredible villain, while Jonathan's determination to stop him establishes the moral heart of the entire franchise. Their relationship is so important that its consequences continue to shape later parts of the story.
The simplicity of Phantom Blood is also one of its greatest strengths. The story doesn't need dozens of complicated abilities, elaborate power systems, or huge groups of characters to make an impact. Instead, it focuses on a straightforward struggle between two individuals whose opposing ideals make their conflict unforgettable. The Victorian setting gives the story a unique atmosphere, with old-fashioned estates, mysterious masks, gothic horror, and supernatural elements that make it feel different from the later parts. The Stone Mask is especially memorable because it introduces a terrifying source of power that changes the course of the Joestar family's history. Everything feels connected to the central conflict between Jonathan and Dio, giving the story a focused narrative that is easy to follow but still emotionally powerful.
Phantom Blood also deserves credit for how much emotion it manages to deliver in such a short story. Jonathan's journey is tragic because he never stops trying to do what is right, even when doing so costs him almost everything. His relationship with Erina Pendleton shows his softer side, while his friendships with characters such as Robert E. O. Speedwagon and Will A. Zeppeli demonstrate how his courage inspires others. These relationships give the story warmth and humanity beyond its supernatural battles. The ending, in particular, is what makes Jonathan such a legendary protagonist. His final confrontation with Dio is not simply about winning a fight; it is about protecting the people he loves and preventing evil from continuing to spread. Jonathan's sacrifice is heartbreaking because he has so much life left to live, yet he faces his fate with extraordinary dignity.
Finally, Part 1 is the best because it makes the rest of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure possible. The Joestar legacy, Dio's influence, the Stone Mask, and the central themes of courage and inherited responsibility all begin here. Later parts introduce more creative battles, unique abilities, and larger casts, but Phantom Blood provides the emotional foundation that gives those stories their significance. Jonathan's influence extends far beyond his own lifetime, and his struggle establishes the standard against which the Joestar family and its enemies can be understood. There is something special about being at the very beginning of a legendary saga and seeing the original hero stand against the villain who will haunt generations to come.
