Google Maps needs an "I'm carrying groceries" setting specifically for Pittsburgh

• Upvotes

I've lived in Pittsburgh long enough to know that distance is a completely meaningless measurement here, but apparently I still haven't learned my lesson.

Yesterday I was walking home with groceries and Google Maps suggested a route that would save me about six minutes.

Six whole minutes. Obviously I took it.

What the little blue line failed to communicate was that this shortcut involved a set of city steps in the South Side Slopes.

I had a gallon of milk, a bag of potatoes, and a carton of eggs that I was becoming increasingly concerned about.

About halfway up, I stopped on a landing and seriously considered whether I needed the potatoes that badly.

And I know, I know. I chose to live somewhere with hills. I'm not asking Pittsburgh to flatten itself.

I just think walking directions here need a few additional settings.

There's regular walking.

There's walking while carrying 25 pounds of groceries.

There's walking with a stroller.

And there's walking when your knees have already informed you that they're not participating in any additional nonsense today.

Those are four completely different modes of transportation in this city.

A route that's technically shorter but requires climbing a ridiculous number of steps isn't always the better route.

I'd happily walk an extra half mile if it meant keeping my groceries and my remaining dignity intact.

I'm curious what other walking routes around Pittsburgh are deceptively awful. Not necessarily dangerous, just places where the map says "quick walk" and your legs discover an entirely different situation.

I moved here about 2.5 years ago. I noticed them immediately. I also feel like there used to be a lot more. Is it a piece of art? Or does it have a logistical purpose? This one was outside of the Aldi in East Liberty on Baum.

PA Attorney General notifies alleged victims that Patrick Vereb intends to plead guilty to all charges in Eternity Pet Memorials case

Thumbnail attorneygeneral.gov

[title was intentionally written to sound neutral but I am personally a victim of this case and I am sharing non-private information I received in an email from the AG's office]

Today, counsel for Patrick Vereb (former owner/operator of Eternity Pet Memorials) notified the court that he is expected to plead guilty to all criminal charges on October 22, 2026.

The guilty plea will take place at 10:00am on October 22, 2026, in Courtroom 316 of the Allegheny County Courthouse.  The Defendant will NOT be sentenced next week.  The Court will order a presentence investigation report to inform the court of the Defendant's background prior to sentencing.

The sentencing hearing will be scheduled for a later date, which will be determined by the Court.  The Judge will determine his sentence on the lead (highest) charge in this case, which is Theft by Deception, a first-degree felony.  There is no agreement as to the sentence on this charge.

In determining Vereb's sentence, the Judge must consider anything in the presentence investigation, as well as the PA Sentencing guidelines (established as law) for this charge, which range from house arrest up to more than year in jail.

We have compiled every single victim impact statement that was provided to the Attorney General's Office through our website.  If you have already submitted a victim impact statement, you do not need to do anything else.  If you have not yet submitted a victim impact statement and wish to provide a statement, please fill out the form below.  Every victim impact statement will be provided to the Judge and defense counsel for the Court to consider at the time of sentencing.

Due to the large number of victims and the very limited space in the courtroom, we have actively requested written victim impact statements since the start of this case so that your words will be heard and considered by the Court.  We thank the thousands and thousands of you who have provided thoughtful statements.

We have also compiled restitution information for this case.  Restitution is the dollar amount of financial loss suffered by each victim that we were able to identify and confirm based upon the records and evidence that were acquired in this investigation.  We will request that the defendant is ordered to pay restitution as a part of his final sentence.

Once the date, time, and location for the sentencing hearing is determined, we will publish all of the details on our website:  Eternity Pet Memorials - PA Office of Attorney General

What are the salaries of architecture professionals (related design field) in the greater Pittsburgh area?

I know architecture pays very little overall but I’m surprised to see how little it pays in Pittsburgh. A firm I recently interviewed for is offering me 75k at 7 years of experience, which is 20k less of what I make now in the South. I am a licensed architect. Any insight into salaries in this field would be great!

Potential issue with Dogtopia in Cranberry

https://www.facebook.com/share/1C2jwFz4vY/

Just saw this post and figured I'd share, in case anyone noticed their dog having behavioral issues after using this place. I do not know the validity, but the allegations seem severe enough to be cognizant about. Here is a copy text of the post at the end of this post, for those who do not use reddit.

Tldr: Supposedly the owner of the establishment has been abusing dogs, and the person who made this post had proof and would share it with anyone who reaches out.

Here is the copy/paste of the post:

--------------------------------------------------------

"Edited to add: The majority of the time I worked there, it truly was the best place for the dogs! I had the most amazing staff. It was not unusual to find Isabelle Rodriguez sitting quietly with a nervous dog instead of going home end of shift or Mary Jordan making sure a scared dog had a fear free grooming experience. Luke was literally almost never there the majority of our time working there due to a health issue. It wasn't until the end that he came back to save money that things went bad.

Luke Doyle of White Oak PA is the owner of Dogtopia of Cranberry . I previously worked as the General Manager at this location. I reported him to authorities (nothing was done apparently), and to corporate as well for his treatment of the dogs which i discovered from several security videos.

After many months of going back and forth with corporate about the fact that he was allowed to continue working with dogs, he was finally shut down. I provided them with the names of the dogs in the videos and implored them to contact the owners. I have not posted publicly because i didnt want to damage any potential criminal case against him. Unfortunately nothing came of the reports in spite of the evidence provided to authorities. Im not sure if he was shut down due to the videos of evidence that i provided or if it was unrelated.

I will share the videos with anyone who wants to see them but they are disturbing so i wont post them here. There are videos of him shoving a dog almost off of a grooming table, hitting dogs, and dangling a senior dog by its harness/leash.

There are also videos of countless text messages from me to him advocating for the dogs. For example, when i started there, there were no staff in the building on Sundays except 9 am till noon and 5 till 8 pm leaving dogs in crates for 18 hours a day. I refused to allow that and immediately changed it. Im told he went back to it as soon as i was gone, allegedly.

He refused to pay the company who Dogtopia advertises remotely controls the temperature so the ac would be broken in back and he wouldnt tell parents. My amazing staff and i would move the dogs to temperature controlled areas and let parents know.

He wanted to staff the building with one person..up to 60 dogs. I wouldn't let him do that either but he did when i left allegedly. He would "work" a shift alone to save money. Staff walked in to extremely unsanitary conditions because dogs weren't even let outside to go to the bathroom. He turned the cameras off. I could go on but i wont.

Luke is now trying to trash our business because i stood up for the dogs. We take alot of pride in the care we provide to the animals. The relationships weve built with the parents are very important to us.

He left a one star review on google which may seem trivial but we earned our 5 star rating and im not going to let an abuser take that away from us.

If everyone could go to our Google reviews and report his review (hes never been here of course) i would greatly appreciate it."

Dentist / Periodontist Recommendations (Anxiety)

• Upvotes

Hi Everyone - I have to get a gum graft and the first doctor I saw was not very communicative about the process. So I am looking for a dentist recommendation for someone who has a bit more anxiety and prefers someone with a good ‘bedside manner’ (is patient with someone who is a lot of questions, or better yet explains things beforehand).

Bonus if you know they perform Gum Grafting for recession, but appreciate it nonetheless.

Thank you!

Is there a bar around with a few friendly fans to cheer the Guardians on with a former Clevelander (who also follows closely and loves the Bucs)?
