[Exclusive] The Pittsburgh Steelers’ ‘diva whisperer’ secretly earned a doctorate while coaching NFL stars
In a world of subterfuge, trick plays and proprietary information, Adam Henry had a secret.
A veteran wide receivers coach, he kept his life outside football on a need-to-know basis. If a receiver dropped a pass or ran the wrong route, some might wonder whether the position coach was too consumed by his other pursuit. And if those in his other world knew he was a football coach, they might think he was getting preferential treatment.
Henry would neither be distracted nor become a distraction, a rule that extended even to his appearance. Now the wide receivers coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers, he has a clean-shaven head, immaculate teeth and a perfectly manicured goatee. He doesn’t want anyone to lose focus on his message and the task at hand — until they crack a joke.
“They say, ‘That’s Mr. Potato Head’ because his goatee is so perfect,” his wife, Zita Henry, says. “They say he snaps it on in the morning.”
Actually, it’s Dr. Potato Head.
Successful coaches develop reputations. You can be a “quarterback guru.” Great defensive play callers are labeled “masterminds.” As for Henry, he became the diva receiver whisperer.
That title dates back at least a decade.
New York Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. went nuclear on Carolina Panthers cornerback Josh Norman at the end of the 2015 season. The following season, Big Blue hired Henry, Beckham’s position coach at LSU, hoping to reel Beckham in.
“We joked about it, like he’s the only one who could keep me from being mad,” Beckham says now. “But that wasn’t really the case. I just loved and respected him as a coach. We kind of let them think that it was to corral or to calm me down or whatever.”
After two years with the Giants, Henry joined the Cleveland Browns. The Browns traded for Jarvis Landry, another LSU receiver. The next year, they dealt for Beckham.
Henry spent the 2020 and 2021 seasons with Mike McCarthy’s Dallas Cowboys, and the next year at the University of Indiana.
When Sean McDermott needed a new receivers coach in Buffalo for 2023, he researched Henry, who spent the previous season as Indiana’s co-offensive coordinator. Stefon Diggs was Buffalo’s star receiver then.
“The wide receiver room on the whole, that’s a unique room in and of itself,” McDermott says. “Him being kind of a wide receiver whisperer, that’s important to any staff, to any team. And Adam’s had success doing that in multiple buildings, not just one. That’s a testament to him and his ability to communicate, care for the players, build those key relationships, and obviously have the football acumen to teach them and help them accomplish their goals, which they all have.”

Henry stayed in Buffalo for three seasons, until McDermott was fired in January. When McCarthy took the job in Pittsburgh, one of his first hires was Henry, who would work with DK Metcalf after the Steelers star was suspended two games and forfeited more than a half-million dollars last season.

Ready for Paris
After missing out on a Dublin towel because they were all gone by the time I got to Dublin I’ve taken no chances this year. Shipped from the Pro Store to a friend in the US and then brought back to the UK for me by another friend!

Get ready for A LOT of revisionist history with this Kordell Stewart doc
There's a narrative going around that Bill Cowher "ruined" Kordell Stewart. If you're old enough to remember, Stewart had a big arm but was horribly inaccurate. He could run, so you can say he was ahead of his time in that sense, but not every running QB from the 90's would be Josh Allen today.
Stewart has more career INTs than TDs. In 2001, when he was 4th in MVP, he threw for 14 TDs and 11 INTs. He was basically the representative for a 13-3 one-seed that had an awesome defense (Bettis only played 11 games).

Where are we meeting in Paris?
Went to the game in Dublin and it was easy to find lots of Steelers fans, as the Temple Bar area is relatively small. Do we have a 🖤💛🖤💛Steelers Arrondissement? We aren't going with a tour so let us know where you'll be.

People who want the Steelers to add at the trade deadline, why?
All over the internet, I see people talking trade candidates and what assets they’d give up to acquire them.
Giving up day two picks for Budda Baker, Brian Thomas Jr., or Zyon McCollum to “fix” our secondary or WR room. Even reporters are getting in on the action with Kaboly saying it’ll be a busy time of year.
My question is why? Why do you want to give up future assets to help the 2026 roster? We’ve seen this story before. We’re not an actual contender. If we’re lucky, we’ll get a favorable matchup and win a single playoff game. Far more likely we don’t sniff the playoffs or get blown out in the Wild Card.
This is just not a team worth adding to. So why do you want to?

This defense is playing much better than you think🔒
This was originally a response to a thread on r/steelers and I thought it deserves its own post, because I think all things considered, this defense has played very well, which is contrary to most of what I’m seeing in this sub.
Agreed our defense can play better. I also think we need to consider these points ⤵️, before bashing on the leagues*** 1****3th** over**all* ranked defense so f**ar.
- Jamel Dean, our #1 cornerback is injured, 2 weeks ago
-Derrick Harmon, a big piece on the defensive line is injured, 3 weeks ago
-and up until about 2 weeks ago, Patrick Graham, this team, and this defense was expecting our #1 cornerback, (Joey Porter Jr) to start on this defense .
All things considered, being statistically above mid-range with these 3, missing significant impact players, actually is a source of optimism in my mind. We’re 3-2, have lost three out of 11 starters on defense in 3 weeks, and we’re ranked to be the 13th best defense? Let’s call that a win. Considering this is week 6 with a new defensive coordinator, Patrick Graham, with a completely new defense for the guys to learn and adapt to.
Can Patrick Queen and the lbs tackle better? Sure. Can we as fans blame the defense for being slightly above average, but not top 5? I think that’s unfair, considering there’s two rookies in the secondary starting…
and Asante Samuel jr. is stepping up to be our #1 cornerback on pretty much 2 weeks notice, when he was 3rd on the depth chart to start the season.
How many 3rd string cornerbacks in this league could have 4PBU’s after being slung into playing the #1 role on such short requirement? Asante Samuel, that’s who.
I think he had a great game vs the colts, and he’s holding his own. I think we should give this defense some grace.
Last week this team won without forcing any turnovers too. That’s rare. For the last 5-6 years this was a steelers team that NEEDED a turnover to win a game. With the amount of firepower on this defense, with TJ Watt, Herbig, Highsmith, Heyward, Benton, Wilson… shit the REST of the defense???… if those turnovers start coming more often like I think they will, this is a dangerous team all around with how the offense have been putting up 24+ points the last 3 weeks.
The narrative of “the Steelers are the highest paid defense they should be #1”…
Vastly overlooks the reality of how this defense as a whole has needed to adapt this season, and are still ranked 13th in the league.
This also isn’t AI. I put effort into my posts because I think my unpopular opinion takes with this sub make sense, and bolding and highlighting things make reading posts and articles easier and more fun.

If you own a Steelers Jersey, make your way to 3200 S Water Street for tryouts.
You are needed at WR for the Buccaneers game on Sunday.
As of this moment, the only active WRs we have are Metcalf, Bernard, and Wetjen. Do we have any plans on signing a 4th? God forbid someone else goes down, we’ll have to throw Heidenreich out there as a pass catcher.
