AI Assisted this is something (ps2rc)

so yeah this is the ps2 version of san andreas running on the psp (not sandstone engine, though ps2rc is made by sandstone dev) i get around 15-20 fps and its playable, i like it. you need a 2.01 pal(?i think) version of ps2 san andreas and the converter itself https://github.com/SandstoneDev/PS2RC/releases/tag/v0.1.1

doesnt work on psp 1000 though and probably wont? unless sandstone dev pulls off some crazy shenanigans... and also this means there could be even more ps2 games for the psp

I’ve always wanted a PSP when I was younger and while cleaning my GF place we found her old psp. A little TLC and it was up and running with Arc4

A few days later and I’m on a work trip so I decided to bring it with me.
This is fulfilling many childhood dreams rn

Also let me know what games I should check out on psp
Currently playing Jeanne D’arc and Harry Potter (PS1)

SHOW-OFF The PSP made me so happy ♥️

I’m from Brazil, and growing up, I always wanted a console, but my family’s religion didn’t allow us to have a TV at home, so that dream never really happened. Luckily, when my mom came back from Portugal, she brought me a legendary PSP. Honestly, I didn’t even know that thing existed at the time haha. I remember playing a ton of Ape Escape, Dragon Ball, and NFS Shift.

The PSP my mom got me was actually part of a special Cars-themed bundle that came with accessories featuring Lightning McQueen. Unfortunately, I don’t have any of it anymore since I was just a kid and ended up losing everything, but it was the same one as in the picture. 😭

How can these products still hold their beauty till now?

I mean I'm not even exaggerating.

Even though they are small by today's standards, their ergonomic design makes them easier to play.

Do you guys actively enjoy playing them?

AI Assisted Good News.

Good News for PSP Developers!

Great news for everyone interested in porting PS2 games to the PSP, creating their own game ports, or developing homebrew applications! I've released two skills for AI agents designed to help with PSP development and game porting.

Universal PS2 Recompiler - AI Skill

https://github.com/SandstoneDev/universal-ps2-recompiler This is not a recompiler tool itself. It's an AI skill containing the knowledge needed to create your own PS2 game recompiler based on PS2RC. You can use this skill with AI agents such as Claude Code to help develop your own recompiler for porting PS2 games to the PSP, using PS2RC as the foundation. You're welcome to fork the PS2RC repository for your projects. However, please credit me as the original author of PS2RC and retain the appropriate original attribution.

PSP Developer - AI Skill

https://github.com/SandstoneDev/psp-developer This skill is based on my own experience developing PSP ports. It provides AI agents with knowledge about PSP development and can be used for porting games, developing other ports, and creating homebrew applications. The goal is to make PSP development more accessible and help the community create new projects! Feel free to try these skills in your projects and share your results with the community!

Homebrew Update on my PSP game A Place Beyond: v0.11 adds the dragon's dream (and thank you for all the feedback!)

Thumbnail

Hi! A week ago I posted my PSP game A Place Beyond here. Thank you all for playing it, for the bug reports and for the honest comments, good and bad. I read all of them, and a lot of this update comes straight from them. ⬇️

What's new

  • The dragon's dream: lie down on the Dreamers' Bier in Vespergrave and wake up in a dream of floating islands, three acts deep, with a new boss, the Nightmare, at the bottom.
  • Gliding: the dream gives you wings. Hold X in the air to glide. After the dream, its islands rise into the sky above the parish, with updrafts to ride.
  • Boss intros for the Vesper Count, the Nightmare, the Tolling Warden and the Hollow Cantor.
  • Letters: the gunsmith's letters and the lore pages now open on painted paper, and your journal keeps them.
  • A stone bridge over the lake, a painted boat, a strange listener in the Mire, the refuge keeper, and a new loading screen.
  • The ground slam is now Square after a double jump, so X is only jump, double jump and glide.

Things you told me, now fixed

  • "It's too dark on a real PSP": there's a BRIGHTNESS option now (pause > OPTIONS), plus look speed, subtitles and reduced motion.
  • PSP-1000: it still can't run the game (it doesn't have enough memory), but now it tells you that clearly instead of showing a confusing error. Thanks to the person who tested it in PPSSPP's PSP-1000 mode.
  • ARK-4/ARK-5 "Corrupted Data": fixed since v0.9.1. The zip is now laid out so that ARK's own unzipper extracts everything. Again, I'm really sorry to the person who lost their files. Please back up your memory stick before installing any homebrew.
  • The license question: someone noticed the notices listed an LGPL library. The game never actually used it; it came in automatically with the C++ runtime. v0.11 no longer contains it at all, and the notices file is updated.
  • "The Source code zip on GitHub is just a readme": GitHub adds those two "Source code" archives to every release automatically. The game is the file named A-Place-Beyond-PSP-v0.11.zip.

Tested on: my PSP-2000 (6.61 PRO-C). I played every stage, the dream and all the boss intros on it, and they run smoothly. People also reported it working on a Vita with Adrenaline (thanks!), in PPSSPP and on a Linux handheld. The PSP-3000 and Go should work too; if you try one, please tell me how it runs.

How it's made (people asked last time, so here it is plainly)

  • I'm a game developer and this is my side project. I design the game: the world, the levels and the mechanics.
  • The look of the game comes from my illustrations.
  • AI helps me a lot. Claude writes most of the code and did the whole PSP port: there's no existing engine, it's custom C++ on the PSP SDK. Some of the newer art, like the boss intro cards and the glide animations, was generated with AI (Codex), and I choose what goes into the game.
  • It's still a prototype, and it's how I can build a game this size on my own.

Download (free): https://github.com/bcaa777/a-place-beyond-psp/releases/latest

Desktop version (runs in the browser): https://bcaa777.itch.io/a-place-beyond

Updating from v0.10: just copy the new EBOOT.PBP over the old one. From v0.9.x: keep data/save.bin, replace the folder, and put save.bin back. Your progress carries over.

I'd love to know what's fun, what's boring and what's broken. Bug reports are very welcome in the GitHub Issues tab.

(Screenshots and clips are from PPSSPP; the game runs the same on my PSP-2000.)

EDIT: Gameplay videos! Thank you to the people who recorded it:

Both show v0.9, so the dream and the boss intros from this update aren't in them yet.

Homebrew PSPMAN is very aesthetic but it kinda sucks at actually playing music

Post image
175 Upvotes

I tried the PSPMAN homebrew because I keep seeing posts about it on Twitter. I threw in nine MP3 files I had on my hard drive. It detected two.

I read the instructions on the website, and that's apparently because it only supports MP3 files at exactly 44.1 kHz while most of my mp3s are 48 kHz. I also had an audiobook at 22 kHz that it didn't detect either.

I tried the exact same files with an old crusty homebrew music player last updated fifteen years ago, and it played seven of them without a hitch (the audiobook crashed it).

Also, I tried running PSPMan in PPSSPP to see what would happen - and it worked. That's how you know it's not using the Media Engine for audio playback - the ME is not emulated on PPSSPP since games didn't use it. I understand this is probably so they can use the same codebase for PSP and Vita but it means it's not very optimized.

I get why people like it. The GUI looks great but it's not very practical if you actually want to listen to music.

QUESTION Kingdom Hearts is back, so here's a little PSP nostalgia

Thumbnail

With the new Kingdom Hearts Collection dropping last week, I figured it was the perfect excuse to photograph one of the cleanest PSP special editions ever made; The Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep PSP-3000 from 2010.

There's something about that silver finish, black accents, and subtle Kingdom Hearts artwork that just works. Nothing ridiculously flashy, just a genuinely beautiful handheld.

16 years later, I still think it is flat out one of the best-looking PSPs ever released.

Curious where everyone ranks this one among the other limited-edition PSP models.

Surely we're not alone here? 😅

Homebrew VVVVVV PSP Port Released (Works on FAT)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

https://github.com/dntrnk/VVVVVV-PSP

Works on FAT (32 MB).
Supports custom levels even with custom assets.

An important point regarding FAT models:
After launching custom levels that contain custom assets, the game may crash later due to a lack of RAM. This doesn't always happen immediately - the crash might occur even when you aren't currently playing such a level. It's enough for the level to have been launched at some point previously. The original game and custom levels that do not use custom assets remain stable.

Custom music should be converted to .at3 files with this converter: https://github.com/dntrnk/VVVVVV-MUSIC-TO-PSP

There's a level editor that includes a script editor (though I don't think anyone will find it particularly convenient for creating levels, but still).

QUESTION Has anyone ever custom-painted a PSP shell with chameleon paint?

Post image
7 Upvotes

I'm thinking about customizing my PSP-3000 and I'm curious if anyone here has ever seen or made a PSP with chameleon/color-shifting paint.

I mean the type of paint that changes colors depending on the viewing angle, like gold → orange → pink → purple → blue. Not just a regular metallic finish, and preferably a smooth finish without any patterns.

Has anyone here tried this on their own PSP, or seen someone else's build? I'd love to see pictures if you have any!

I'm also wondering how well the paint holds up on a PSP shell and whether it affects the plastic or the fit of the parts.

Any examples, advice, or experiences would be appreciated!

QUESTION Why do people hate cases on the PSP's?

So I bought my PSP's a couple years ago (PSP Go & PSP 1000)

And I've been reading that a lot of people dislike the fact that some decide to get cases for their consoles but what is so wrong about it? Does it damage the console? Or does it actually help it preserve
