Hi! A week ago I posted my PSP game A Place Beyond here. Thank you all for playing it, for the bug reports and for the honest comments, good and bad. I read all of them, and a lot of this update comes straight from them. ⬇️
What's new
- The dragon's dream: lie down on the Dreamers' Bier in Vespergrave and wake up in a dream of floating islands, three acts deep, with a new boss, the Nightmare, at the bottom.
- Gliding: the dream gives you wings. Hold X in the air to glide. After the dream, its islands rise into the sky above the parish, with updrafts to ride.
- Boss intros for the Vesper Count, the Nightmare, the Tolling Warden and the Hollow Cantor.
- Letters: the gunsmith's letters and the lore pages now open on painted paper, and your journal keeps them.
- A stone bridge over the lake, a painted boat, a strange listener in the Mire, the refuge keeper, and a new loading screen.
- The ground slam is now Square after a double jump, so X is only jump, double jump and glide.
Things you told me, now fixed
- "It's too dark on a real PSP": there's a BRIGHTNESS option now (pause > OPTIONS), plus look speed, subtitles and reduced motion.
- PSP-1000: it still can't run the game (it doesn't have enough memory), but now it tells you that clearly instead of showing a confusing error. Thanks to the person who tested it in PPSSPP's PSP-1000 mode.
- ARK-4/ARK-5 "Corrupted Data": fixed since v0.9.1. The zip is now laid out so that ARK's own unzipper extracts everything. Again, I'm really sorry to the person who lost their files. Please back up your memory stick before installing any homebrew.
- The license question: someone noticed the notices listed an LGPL library. The game never actually used it; it came in automatically with the C++ runtime. v0.11 no longer contains it at all, and the notices file is updated.
- "The Source code zip on GitHub is just a readme": GitHub adds those two "Source code" archives to every release automatically. The game is the file named A-Place-Beyond-PSP-v0.11.zip.
Tested on: my PSP-2000 (6.61 PRO-C). I played every stage, the dream and all the boss intros on it, and they run smoothly. People also reported it working on a Vita with Adrenaline (thanks!), in PPSSPP and on a Linux handheld. The PSP-3000 and Go should work too; if you try one, please tell me how it runs.
How it's made (people asked last time, so here it is plainly)
- I'm a game developer and this is my side project. I design the game: the world, the levels and the mechanics.
- The look of the game comes from my illustrations.
- AI helps me a lot. Claude writes most of the code and did the whole PSP port: there's no existing engine, it's custom C++ on the PSP SDK. Some of the newer art, like the boss intro cards and the glide animations, was generated with AI (Codex), and I choose what goes into the game.
- It's still a prototype, and it's how I can build a game this size on my own.

Updating from v0.10: just copy the new EBOOT.PBP over the old one. From v0.9.x: keep data/save.bin, replace the folder, and put save.bin back. Your progress carries over.
I'd love to know what's fun, what's boring and what's broken. Bug reports are very welcome in the GitHub Issues tab.
(Screenshots and clips are from PPSSPP; the game runs the same on my PSP-2000.)
EDIT: Gameplay videos! Thank you to the people who recorded it:
Both show v0.9, so the dream and the boss intros from this update aren't in them yet.
