U.S. Politics megathread
American politics has always grabbed our attention - and the current president more than ever. We get tons of questions about the president, the supreme court, and other topics related to American politics - but often the same ones over and over again. Our users often get tired of seeing them, so we've created a megathread for questions! Here, users interested in politics can post questions and read answers, while people who want a respite from politics can browse the rest of the sub. Feel free to post your questions about politics in this thread!
All top-level comments should be questions asked in good faith - other comments and loaded questions will get removed. All the usual rules of the sub remain in force here, so be nice to each other - you can disagree with someone's opinion, but don't make it personal.

Why do I immediately need to poop when I walk into a bookstore?
Every single time. I walk into a Barnes & Noble perfectly fine, and within 10 minutes I’m speed-walking to the bathroom.
It doesn’t happen at the grocery store. It doesn’t happen at Target. Only around books. I’ve tested this. I went in last week specifically to see if it would happen, and it did. I didn’t even buy anything.
Is it the smell of the paper? Is it because I’m relaxed? Does my colon just really respect literature?

In America people talk about "your typical 9-5 job" but in my country (Poland) and surrounding countries (Czechia, Slovakia etc.) most of your typical office jobs are from 8-4 or earlier. Why do you think its like this?

Is it common for people to take a shower first thing after sex? NSFW
I’m one of those people that basically just want to go and take a shower first thing after having sex. Part of the reason why is because I’ve always been pretty adamant about hygiene, after I finish inside my gf I do have an urge to just relax and cuddle with her but my instinct tells me “dude go and clean yourself you just had sex” and so thats the first thing I do. My gf thinks it’s weird but I just can’t feel satisfied until I have my shower.
Is this a common reaction?

Blow jobs and all that NSFW
I (25f) slept with a guy a while ago, and I think it was a nice experience. But after going home and sitting with my thoughts, all the questions and insecurities started flooding... i felt i did everything wrong or weird... like why did it take so long for him to come? did he even come? Did i make stupid noises? Did he have sex with me because he felt bad for me? BLAH BLAH, ALL THAT........
Anyways, my question is for the boys, mostly...
So i went down on him and i think i know how do do it and i think he enjoyed it. But i was also sucking on his balls because i think guys like that, but i actually don't know... so afterwards i felt really stupid, imagine i was laying there, sucking his balls and he hated it....
Do guys like that?? Or is it weird??
Thats all

Does anyone else stay up way later than they should just because nighttime feels like the only time you truly get to yourself?
Even when you’re exhausted, going to bed feels like ending your free time too early. I swear I end up sacrificing sleep just to feel like I had a little time for myself. Is this a real thing or am I just weird? I have to wake up tired just to feel like I got enough time to relax the night before. Make it make sense 😭 Does anyone else do this?

What happens to the people who can’t find any job at all despite trying their best?
I’ve honestly wondered what happens to the people that lose their job and can’t find another job in their field or some other job outside of their field until they can find a job in their field again. I don’t know how it is everywhere in the world, but where I live in Sweden finding any job is extremely difficult nowadays.
This isn’t the 1980s where you can fall back on working in a supermarket or a fast food restaurant. Those jobs are extremely difficult to get and very competitive, so you need to have the right connections to get those jobs, which not everyone has.
There are no guarantees that studying and getting a degree will lead to anything. I know so many people who did their bachelors and masters for 5 years who were not able to get jobs in their field, and are now stuck with a bunch of student loan debt.
If you can’t get a job in your field, or any job at all to be able to pay your bills and survive, are you just supposed to live in poverty or die? Or start a business and try to become profitable despite having no up front investment?

Will someone tell me when my mom dies?
I dont know where my mom is. Nobody has heard from her in years. Shes unstable and frankly my life has been a lot easier without her.
She will eventually die, one way or the other. What Im wondering is, will someone like the police inform me when it happens? Assuming shes identifiable.
I do a google search every once in a while and theres no online presence or announcement of her death.

Where did all the doctors go?
Been scrolling through a list of providers covered by my insurance since mine is retiring, it's all NP's and PA's now. Someone made a post in one of my local subs earlier looking for a psychiatrist and they mentioned having a preference for MD/DO. Plenty of comments agreeing that there's not many in the area anymore.
Growing up I always heard being a doctor is like the #1 way to success. I figured there'd be more of them, doesn't seem like an oversaturated market.
Where'd they all go? Covid burnout get them maybe?

Have I been using those U-shaped travel pillows wrong this whole time?
I fly a lot for work, and I've had one those pillows for over a decade. It was given to me as a gift, and I've just used it as seemed natural to me - which is, to put the open part behind my neck, so that my head is supported and doesn't drop forward when I doze off.
But mine is finally starting to wear out, and when I was looking for a replacement, it seems like all the product photos show people using them with the opening facing forward. I've tried it that way a couple times when I can't seem to get comfortable, and it just pushes my neck awkwardly away from the seat. Is that really how they're meant to be used though?

How do donut shops stay in business?
Whenever I go and buy donuts from a local shop (which isn’t often), I’m always amazed that not only are they still in business, but that everything is so cheap. And it seems like there’s a donut shop every other street too! I understand it’s volume-based but when donuts are like 2 or 3 bucks, how is it even possible to keep their bills paid??

Did anyone else have 'library classes' growing up? Was it just our school? Is it an Aussie thing?
In primary school, we would sometimes have classes where we would go to the school library and just... do school work. Usually reading a book and doing activities based on that book, or just a period where we were allowed to read whatever we wanted. I think we were also allowed to borrow books during these classes? During high school, we would sometimes have regular classes (biology, math, etc.) except in the library for some reason.

Wow the whole South East Asia is engulfed by pure dangerous level of Smog for a while already, but nobody is doing anything about it?
I mean even the countries that are suffering even though it is not their fault are not doing anything about it to try to stop it other than praying that it will go away on its own?

Why is it so much easier to spend $50 on a random dinner out than to spend $50 on something useful that lasts for years?
I noticed a strange psychological pattern in myself and others: dropping $50 on a couple of drinks or a quick meal out feels completely effortless, but agonizing over a $50 purchase for a durable household item, a good piece of software, or a quality tool can take days of research and second-guessing. Why does our brain value temporary experiences so differently from lasting items?

Is it me are a lot of white immigrants in East Asia tend to be the opposite of what'd you expect?
I went back to my parent's home country (Taiwan) for the first time in my life and honestly my mandarin isn't great so I became friends with many Canadian, American and British foreigners, many who happen to be white. I thought they'd be like very open-minded considering they chose to live in such a different culture, but I kind of felt they were a bit like racist and close-minded, like sort of like American hicks that lived in Taiwan. Many of them didn't speak Mandarin despite living there for more than 5 years and a few Canadians kept saying how there was too many Chinese and Indians in Canada.
Most of them were teachers so Idk I thought they enjoy being around kids or like wanted to educate kids of different culture, but i realize quickly they kinda make crude jokes and make fun of them often, but not like in a jokey way like having a good time over some beers, it was like kinda in a weird racist way making fun of their English, and calling them names.
Idk, it was just a weird disconnect that I was observing. It's like they didn't really seem to respect the culture or the people but at the same time they were "open" enough move there and settle there.

what are the kids using cold sore patches for that would warrant an ID?
something that happened just an hour ago. i was getting some cold sore patches and motor oil (latter because my dad forgot his wallet) at Walgreens, and the clerk up front asked for an ID or birth day. the dude was pretty chill, but did mention that the kids up here were using the cold sore stuff for something other than cold sores. i never really got a specific answer, and never pressed any further because i was in a rush.
granted, it could've been the motor oil that he was talking about, but still. google is of no help here, so....what the hell are kids getting up to?

Is it racist to describe someone using their ethnicity?
I’m white. Is is racist if I’m describing someone to someone and I say they are black, or Asian, or Mexican etc. Especially in a corporate setting.
Another example is pointing someone out in a crowded room. I always feel weird saying “that black guy over there” but saying “that guy in the red shirt and black hat” feels like I’m avoiding a key characteristic that would make finding the person much easier.
I’m probably over thinking it but I always want to be sensitive and professional depending on the circumstances.

Why do some electrical cars sound like they’re floating/making magical sounds?
Just now I parked my own car and an electrical car drove by making these wooshy sounds as if it was hovering. I’ve heard it before, what is that?
Can they turn it off? It sounds like an unnecessary function.

You have a dog, the dog is able to open the door. The police knock on the door and ask to come in and the dog let's them in. Is it legal for them to come in?
Dogs are pretty smart. Some could open doors. I'm not saying turnable doorknobs but the ones where you just press down and pull. If a dog were to do that. Would it be legal for the police to come in and search your home?

Why do people care less about religion as they get richer?
I've noticed this pattern in a lot of countries, both Christian and Muslim. In wealthier, upper class neighborhoods, women are more likely to ditch their headscarves or dress more freely, relationships before marriage are more common, and people tend to be more accepting of other religious beliefs and atheism.
They aren't become full-time atheists ofcourse but they do care much less.
Why does this happen?

Why does the US have so much more tolerance for athletes being criminals and sex crimes than the UK? NSFW
Deshaun Watson, Ray Rice, commit serious crimes and barely get a slap on the wrist from the NFL. Mason Greenwood basically got forced out of the UK for his violence against his girlfriend. Now he comes back as an away player and was jeered the whole match.
Why is the standard so different?
