What should I buy? Mirrorless?

I need a second body, I am coming from a D750, and I really thought I had this all figured out until I went and put my hands on a mirrorless camera today.

It felt like a toy. It literally reminded me of a point and shoot camera. I first learned photography in a darkroom with an old SLR camera that my uncle lent to me. It was heavy and hard to use. My grandpa had a makeshift darkroom in his basement bathroom. Film photography was magic. And I’m not (that) old. I’m 38, so don’t come after me for being a boomer LOL.

I am an oil painter, and I picked up a DSLR later, in order to take quality reference photos for paintings.
I was surprised to find that I ended up obsessed with photography.

Being an artist, my main focus is to take technically beautiful photos. But I also need a second body as I start to grow my business. I’m having a heck of a time biting the bullet and buying a mirrorless body. I feel like all the added technology, the more accurate AF, the electronic viewfinder and accurate exposure preview… it kind of takes the art out of it, no?

Sure, you can still compose your photograph and have an artist’s eye to take the photo, and editing skills… but I don’t know. Does it feel too easy to take a good photograph now? I could be wrong.

I will say, I have not yet used a mirrorless in the field. I just played around with it in the store. I’m weighing the fact that the mirrorless camera may help me produce a greater quantity of quality photographs (which sounds good, right?), with the fact that I’m worried it will take the challenge and therefore the satisfaction out of it.

And FWIW, I’m not hating on mirrorless or anyone who uses it. I would love to hear a whole variety of opinions. I’m just trying to wrap my head around the industry moving in this direction, which appears to be quickly rendering DSLRs as obsolete.

Gear question Does Nikon have any plans to put out a 28 to 70 F2 Z-mount lens?

coming from both Sony and Canon, that was one of the more enjoyable lenses that I’ve had and while I’m loving the rest of Nikon’s lens offerings, that’s the one thing I’ve been missing. 24 to 70 at f2.8 is good, but for the price they’re wanting for the 2.8, I’d much rather wait and spend a little bit to get an F2.

Gear question Camera Skins: Are They Actually Worth It? 🎥

Quick question for those of you who put skins or wraps on your cameras. Why do you use them? Is it mainly for looks and personalisation, or do they actually serve a practical purpose, like protecting the camera from scratches?

If I already have a cage on my camera, is there really a need for one?

Also, for those who use them, do they trap heat? I do a lot of video recording, so that’s something I’m a bit concerned about.

I’m using the Nikon Z8. Would you recommend getting a skin for it, and if so, which one? Just trying to figure out if it’s actually worth it or if it’s more of a cosmetic thing. Would love to hear your experiences!

Thanks in advance.

What should I buy? D810 cage?

I just want to see if anybody has a recommendation for a cage for my D810. It would be more for protection than anything else, but if there are some other benefits, mounting a monitor. Any assistance in this purchase would be helpful.

What should I buy? Mirrorless from Fujifilm?

I used a Nikon DSLR for ages, starting with the D50 which was my favorite until I ran it to the ground. I switched to mirrorless when I stopped shooting professionally because arthritis made carrying the gear difficult. I tried several mirrorless brands and settled on Fujifilm because at the time there wasn’t a decent Nikon option. Sadly sold all my wonderful Nikon lenses, too.

The Fujifilm I settled on because the menus were most similar to Nikon so I couldn’t transition fairly easily. I have some nice lenses but I’ve never loved the camera and drifted away from photography because of that.

I’d like to get back into it and I see that there are now Nikon mirrorless options.

Is it worth switching back? I want something light and smallish, with decent prime lens options (which looks like it limits me to Nikon full frame which I don’t need, but lens options are important to me).

I’ll be a hobbyist, but I know how to use a camera. I don’t need it to be beginner-friendly but I don’t need pro-quality either. For reference my 12 year old Fuji is fine for my needs, I just don’t love it.

I’ll be shooting a combo of basic daily life photos but primarily I produce live music events in dive bars with crappy lighting and I would like to take more photos of these events for archival and promo purposes. (I used to be a concert photographer, so I understand the challenges of concert photography. The venues I’m at these days are either low light or harsh light, having a fast lens will be important to me.)

I kind of don’t know where to start looking at the Nikon mirrorless line.

I broke my gear P100 sensor offset, I tried to repair it and got shocked

Sorry for the lack of pictures, I tried my best to show the issue. I dropped my p100 (yea the one from 2010) in my front yard earlier and the sensor is now shifted to the right and shows a pretty big black spot on the screen because of it, I currently have the back shell and everything off down to the motherboard, tried to unscrew it too and got a really bad shock in my thumb, any advice as to how to fix it would be appreciated. I know someone will say it’s not worth fixing but for personal reasons I’d really like to get this working again

Gear question Defective Z9? Impossibly bad AF performance

It's me from the look I got a Z9 post from yesterday.

I actually got it on Tuesday, had a day to play with it, update the firmware, reset the body, and set my custom settings. Then I took it to shoot an event last night and it was an unimitigated disaster.

For context:

  • Bad AF happened on the 24-70 2.8 F with an FTZII and a 50mm 1.4 Z

  • I am an experienced event shooter used to working in dark rooms or rooms with terrible/weird light.

  • I read the AF parts of the manual beforehand and watched some videos knowing this was one of the biggest changes and one that I was looking forward to with the Z9

  • I have used mirrorless cameras before, a Sony A7rIII that I used to shoot events for a few years, and I own a Ricoh GRIII and a Leica Q2.

I have never seen AF performance this poor. I am pretty confident my F4 would have handled this without issue. AF was missing by 6+ feet even in AF-S with focus release priority on. The camera was just lost. Can I get a sanity check here? I don't want to put my coworkers faces on blast in the top of a Reddit post, so I will throw a few samples from NX Studio showing the focus points and the results in the comments....it's bad.

Thankfully the ebay seller is being cool and taking it back. I just need to know if I am being crazy here or I just obviously got a dud.

What should I buy? Upgrading from Panasonic GH4 to Nikon Z6?

Hi!

I've been shooting for the past six years or so (mainly events and landscapes) and I'm starting to feel the limitations of my trusty old GH4 - especially when shooting in lower light indoors the autofocus and crop sensor make my life harder than it needs to be.

I'd like to upgrade to a full frame system and thinking about buying a used Z6. Plenty of bodies with shutter counts around 50k (or less) going for 700 euros and I could get a used Nikkor Z 28-75mm f/2.8, which is my most used focal length, for the same price. One of the local stores would give me around 300-500e for my old gear.

Any estimates on how big of a difference would going from my old camera to a Z6 make in low light situations? Or would you recommend something else?

(I don't shoot professionally, I've just merely accepted my fate as the "camera guy" of my family...)

Photo Submission First concert I’ve shot on film / utterly mindblown by the F4S in 2026!

Wanted to post these here bc I’ve found the analog subs are pretty harsh critics and this is less about me trying to brag on my photos than it is about discussing how utterly impressive the F4S feels even today.

Admittedly I know these aren’t the most interesting shots, but this concert was truthfully the first event I’d ever covered seriously on film or ever used my F4S at, and I’m honestly shocked by how absurdly well it performed.

I covered the concert predominantly on digital and then used the F4S during setup / intermissions / lulls in the action; I had the 50 1.4 Ai-S and I shot on HP5+ pushed to 3200 in aperture priority and genuinely like 90% of the roll turned out phenomenal. There were a fair number of similar shots which is my fault for having the bad carryover habit of burst shooting on digital, but the camera found focus shockingly easily given the lighting situation, and it also metered incredibly well IMO. I knew the F4S was a well regarded SLR in Nikon’s lineup, I guess I just didn’t expect it to be exactly as capable as it is. I’m a decent photographer, but a novice on film, and to get results like this on the first roll is genuinely a testament to this beast of a camera.

Picked up the 17-35 F/2.8D ED-IF today, and I’m excited to put a ton more rolls through this thing!

Gear question Need help with camera settings!

New cameras! (Need help with settings)
Hello! I've bought two new cameras
• Canon S5 IS
• Nikon D1000
I bought them both for roughly 175$/€156 (and | got an extra lens for the Nikon) so 1 am hoping that was a reasonable price, although 1 am struggling with the settings!
Previously I have had a Sony Cybershot, with it the pictures can turn out warm as well as "crisp"/cold toned and it's pretty easy to control it! Although with both of these new cameras I feel like the pictures look dull and the colours don't really pop, it kinda looks cold and flat. And when I tried taking a picture outside in the dark with one of them it couldn't catch the view and it was a very dark picture.
Does anyone have tips and tricks on how to learn to adjust settings and use these cameras to their fullest potential? I'm willing to hear all tips that everyone has and how to use them properly!! I know some cameras simply take warmer/colder toned pictures than others so I don't know how much I can do but I thought surely there are more knowledgable people on here
