Politics/राजनीति How do people in Nepal actually view people from Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Sikkim?

Post image
41 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I wanted to ask something that's been on my mind for a while.

I'm from the Indian hills, and I've always been curious about how people in Nepal view those of us living in Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Sikkim.

We share the Nepali language, culture, festivals and a lot of history, but we're Indian citizens, and many of us identify as Gorkhas or Indian Nepalis.

Whenever I come across Instagram reels about Gorkhaland, I often see arguments between people from Nepal and people from the Indian hills. Sometimes people start calling us by names like “dh*ti” and other insults, and the discussion turns into a fight instead of an actual conversation. Obviously, Instagram comments don't represent everyone, but seeing this repeatedly has made me wonder what people genuinely think about us.

I also know that the word “Gorkha” is a sensitive topic for some people, and that opinions on the Gorkhaland movement differ. I'm not expecting everyone to agree with the demand, but I'd like to understand why it creates such strong reactions.

So, to people from Nepal:

How do you actually view people from Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Sikkim?

Do you see us as part of the same broader cultural community, even though we're Indian citizens?

What do you think about us identifying as Gorkhas? Why does the term bother some people?

How do you see the Gorkhaland movement? Do you understand the reasons people support it, even if you disagree with it?

And honestly, why do you think discussions about this sometimes turn so hostile online?

I'm not posting this to start a fight or claim that everyone from Nepal thinks the same way. I genuinely want to hear different perspectives because I'd rather understand what people think than keep making assumptions based on Instagram comments.

You can disagree with us. I'm just interested in having an honest conversation without insulting each other over our identities.

Discussion/बहस Why is almost all our cardamom still going raw to India?

• Upvotes

Been living abroad for a while and lately thinking about starting something back home. So after lunch at work, I doom scroll reddit hoping to find an opportunity. Today, I stumbled across this year-old article from Himal Press:

https://en.himalpress.com/black-cardamom-exports-surge-33-to-rs-1-68-billion-in-q1/

Basically it says pretty much all our Alaichi goes to India, gets processed and branded there, then sold to Pakistan and the Middle East as Indian product. Farmers get under $14 a kilo, and the re-exported stuff goes for up to around $28/kg. Also read somewhere that Indian traders sell it as “Sikkim cardamom.”

We’re literally the biggest producer in the world. The above article says, we have more than 55% of global output. Another article from Kathmandu Post says we are the largest producer at 68% global output.

I know a few Nepali companies are doing their own grading and packaging now, but it still seems tiny.

So genuine question for anyone who actually knows this trade: what’s stopping us from processing it here and selling direct to the Gulf or wherever? Is it finding buyers? Quality? Paperwork? Or do the traders in Birtamod and Siliguri just have the whole thing locked down?

And would farmers even sell to someone new if you paid on the spot? Or do most of them already take advances from collectors before harvest?

Just curios if this is a real opportunity or if there's a reason nobody's doing it?

Will India go into a state of emergency? And how will it impact nepal?

Looking at the current conditions it is highly likely that India might enter a state of emergency very soon. There's definitely vote theft going on there which is favouring the ruling party, there's no doubt about that since BJP is hellbent on defending the election commission despite it being an independent body. They even stopped people from protesting and were detaining people for no reason. The government only has two options left, either make Gyanesh Kumar resign or declare an emergency. The latter seems more likely given the BJP government as making GK resign would be them admitting guilt.

Given these conditions I have a feeling that Nepal is gonna be a battleground for Indian opposition just like how during the democracy movement all the nepali politicians fled to Bihar and UP when Mahendra banned all the political parties. This might bring a shift in Nepali politics too as Indian influence will rise because of it. What do you guys think?

Discussion/बहस Advantages and disadvantages of allowing a PLA airbase in Nepal?

Recently I read the news about the PLA establishing an airbase in landlocked Laos, and China providing assistance to train Laotian military to form their airforce branch. Tyespachi I started thinking, Buddha International airport has not been commercially viable for more than 5 years, and Nepal doesn't have an airforce. So, why shouldn't Balen propose Xi Jinping to convert Buddha International airport to a PLA airbase and help Nepal create an airforce as well. Don't you think the fact that the Buddha International airport has the name "Buddha" in it, and lies so close to Buddha's birthplace would be such an enticing offer to the Chinese? Plus fully loaded fighter jets can't take off from PLA airbase in Tibet while they could easily do so from Lumbini. Thoughts?

Nepalese grandparents don't express themselves much

They don't talk much about their inner things, like their childhood, their childhood dreams, their emotions, etc. I have closely observed these things and it makes me sad that they don't know how to openly express their inner thoughts and feelings to their loved ones or grandchildren. Maybe no one taught them how to? Or maybe they don't want to talk about it? Maybe they are full of regrets? I don't know

I want to ask them a lot of questions, but just like them, I don't know how to ask them. Maybe I'm just like them too

Help/सहयोग Startup looking for someone to run our socials before it dies of loneliness - REMOTE/PAID

ok so here’s the situation.

we’re 4 engineers and zero marketers, and we need help, fr.

what you’d actually be doing:

  • making and posting content on LinkedIn, X and Insta (memes, carousels, threads, whatever works)
  • cold emails and DMs to people who might want what we’re building
  • figuring out who our customers even are
  • running our marketing plan, or telling us it’s mid and fixing it
  • coming up with ways to get more customers and followers without being cringe about it

you might be a fit if:

  • you’re chronically online and you know why some posts hit and some flop
  • you can write like a human, not like a LinkedIn guru who “learned 7 lessons from his dog”
  • cold-messaging strangers doesn’t make you want to throw your phone
  • you use AI tools to work faster but you don’t just copy-paste ChatGPT slop
  • bonus if you know anything about startups or tech (not required, we’ll teach you)

what you get:

  • NPR 15,000/month (That's the most I can do atm, but at least you won't have to wait 3 months for it, as I'll pay from my pocket, no HR or Finance dept)
  • [hours: ~ 3-4 hrs/day, flexible]
  • fully remote
  • real ownership: you’re not “the social media intern,” you’re basically our entire marketing department
  • a front-row seat to an early-stage startup trying to make it

To apply: DM me with:

  1. a quick intro (2-3 lines max, no essays pls)
  2. something you’ve posted or made that you’re proud of
  3. your most unhinged-but-would-actually-work idea for growing a brand from zero 🔥

best idea gets bonus points. no CV needed unless you really want to send one.

Rant/गुनासो How do I help my 25 year old brother get his life together?

My brother is 25 and spends almost all day lying in bed reading novels. He doesn't work, barely goes out and doesn't seem concerned about his future.

My mom treats him very gently and never questions him because she's afraid he might go into depression if anyone says anything to him.

I understand mental health matters, but it's genuinely sad watching him spend his life like this. I'm not even expecting him to get a job immediately. I just want him to go outside, meet people, experience life, and find something to look forward to.

I don't know if he's struggling mentally or has simply gotten too comfortable living this way. I want to help, but he's an adult, and I can't force him to change.

How do you help someone who doesn't seem interested in helping themselves

The rise of cafe and clothing store startup culture in Nepal

Recently, I'm seeing young people opening cafes and clothing stores everywhere, especially Gen Z. I mean, it's not a bad thing, but I have two questions:

  1. Is there still a market for these businesses?

  2. What are some alternative startup ideas similar to cafes and clothing stores? Like foreigners haru kya cool way ma small stores run garirako hunxan ni, tehi way ma

I'm asking because I think I want to start one of these businesses or something different on my own. I'm just bored

Is anyone here interested in learning Nepali? Genuinely curious if there’s demand.

Hey everyone!

I’ve been wondering about something lately. I’ve heard from a few people that learning Nepali can be pretty difficult, not necessarily because of the language itself, but because there aren’t that many good resources available, especially when it comes to practicing with native speakers.

I’m from Nepal, and that got me thinking.

What if there was a simple way to connect people who want to learn Nepali with native Nepali speakers who could actually teach them?

Nothing overly complicated or expensive. Just real people helping you learn the language through conversations, structured lessons, or whatever works best for you, for a small fee.

But before putting any time into building something like this, I wanted to ask this community:

Is there actually any demand for learning Nepali?

Would you personally be interested in something like this? Or do you know people who are trying to learn Nepali but struggling to find good resources?

I’m not selling anything or promoting a service. This is just an idea at this point, and I’m genuinely trying to understand whether it would be useful to anyone.

Even if you’re not interested, I’d love to hear your thoughts. And if you’ve tried learning Nepali before, I’d be really curious to know what challenges you faced.

Thanks!

AI generated posts Everywhere

Is it just me or does everybody notice the same generic AI generated social media post from all businesses? Every single graphics is so obvious it's from AI.

I get that AI has made the process of creating the posts super easy which used to cost time and money for these businesses. But as a consumer we see the same exact format everywhere.

My mom dad's feed is full of AI content, IDK if they can even differentiate if it's real or not.And the obvious brain rot animated talking animal, vegetables.

Done with this.

I went to samaj dental clinic to assess my dental problems and get braces. But when I left , I felt their services to be so sub-par. I dont want to extract teeth and push my jaw backwards to align my bite . Please share your knowledge if you went through orthodontics treatment in Nepal . That will be very helpful to me.
