Discussion/बहस Blown away by how developed Tajikistan's capital Dushanbe looks compared to Kathmandu.

'Why did Nepal fail to develop like other countries?' bhanera jo Nepali lai sodhe pani, the first response is almost always "It's because Nepal is landlocked". So, I got curious and started thinking, Asiama aru pani landlocked des haru chan. Let's see aru landlocked des haru (Laos, Afghanistan, Mongolia, and Tajikistan) ko development level kati raicha bhanera, and so I started watching videos on YouTube. Ulan Batur ta Kathmandu sanga kunai levelma ni compare garna namilne levelma developed raicha. Vientiane pani purai highrise building ra 6 lane ko bato, ani aailey aba China samma jane railway ra Chinese airforce base bhako sahar bani sakyo. Tara Mongolia ko per capita income ali dherai nai cha, Laos China ko jigri bhai halyo, so let's compare Kathmandu with Nepal jastai per capita income bhako Kabul ra Dushanbe bhaneko ta, my god I was simply blown away by how clean and developed they look. Kabul ma ta US military ko 20 years rule huda dherai nai development gardiyo hola, some estimates put US investments in Afghanistan's infrastructure development alone at $80 billion, but Dushanbe ta 1990s tira independent bhako des ani Nepal jastai purai remittances ma chaleko des. Tara Dushanbe pani kasto 6 lane ko freeways bhako, highrise buildings bhako, clean k.. Nepal ko development level ta bihar ko gau ra Africa ma civil war bhayeka countries haru sanga compare garna milne khalko, not even Tajikistan or Afghanistan, Laos ra Mongolia ko ta kurai nagare bho.

Politics/राजनीति How do people in Nepal actually view people from Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Sikkim?

Post image
95 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I wanted to ask something that's been on my mind for a while.

I'm from the Indian hills, and I've always been curious about how people in Nepal view those of us living in Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Sikkim.

We share the Nepali language, culture, festivals and a lot of history, but we're Indian citizens, and many of us identify as Gorkhas or Indian Nepalis.

Whenever I come across Instagram reels about Gorkhaland, I often see arguments between people from Nepal and people from the Indian hills. Sometimes people start calling us by names like “dh*ti” and other insults, and the discussion turns into a fight instead of an actual conversation. Obviously, Instagram comments don't represent everyone, but seeing this repeatedly has made me wonder what people genuinely think about us.

I also know that the word “Gorkha” is a sensitive topic for some people, and that opinions on the Gorkhaland movement differ. I'm not expecting everyone to agree with the demand, but I'd like to understand why it creates such strong reactions.

So, to people from Nepal:

How do you actually view people from Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Sikkim?

Do you see us as part of the same broader cultural community, even though we're Indian citizens?

What do you think about us identifying as Gorkhas? Why does the term bother some people?

How do you see the Gorkhaland movement? Do you understand the reasons people support it, even if you disagree with it?

And honestly, why do you think discussions about this sometimes turn so hostile online?

I'm not posting this to start a fight or claim that everyone from Nepal thinks the same way. I genuinely want to hear different perspectives because I'd rather understand what people think than keep making assumptions based on Instagram comments.

You can disagree with us. I'm just interested in having an honest conversation without insulting each other over our identities.

Rant/गुनासो A costly mistake from my side

So a tenant left my house today but today I was kinda given the assignment of overseeing the transfer. But I was also kinda awkward so so I didn’t not properly see till the end of moving out and when I again came to see the flat. The apartment was fully trashed everywhere which they refused to clean but that was not all. When I later returned to see after they were departing , my family saw that they had completely vandalized the walls with doodles and scratched the wall behinds the doors and also with colors . I just feel stupid with myself if I was more vigilant that would not have happened at all . I can’t even blame anyone but me.So yeah just sharing my heavy feelings here that’s all. I don’t think I will ever trust anyone . Why am I so dumb.thats all thank u for reading my rant.

Help/सहयोग Need help with data entry job

Hi admin, please delete this post if it is not appropriate for this group.

Hi all,

I have a small project for which I am looking for someone interested in doing data entry. I will be honest: I only have a budget of Nrs.15K to 20K. This is not continuous work. If you work daily, the overall data entry should be completed in 1 week. If you work slowly, it should be completed in 2 weeks. All you need is a laptop and a good Wi-Fi connection.

If you are interested in the data entry job, please fill out this form. https://forms.gle/24pbcTxGTtJgVXB79

I will prepare a contract with you and pay you as you finish the job. I could make multiple payments as each part of the project is completed. I would like to discuss this further over a Zoom call rather than here. Simply fill out the Google Form here.

Discussion/बहस Why is almost all our cardamom still going raw to India?

Been living abroad for a while and lately thinking about starting something back home. So after lunch at work, I doom scroll reddit hoping to find an opportunity. Today, I stumbled across this year-old article from Himal Press:

https://en.himalpress.com/black-cardamom-exports-surge-33-to-rs-1-68-billion-in-q1/

Basically it says pretty much all our Alaichi goes to India, gets processed and branded there, then sold to Pakistan and the Middle East as Indian product. Farmers get under $14 a kilo, and the re-exported stuff goes for up to around $28/kg. Also read somewhere that Indian traders sell it as “Sikkim cardamom.”

We’re literally the biggest producer in the world. The above article says, we have more than 55% of global output. Another article from Kathmandu Post says we are the largest producer at 68% global output.

I know a few Nepali companies are doing their own grading and packaging now, but it still seems tiny.

So genuine question for anyone who actually knows this trade: what’s stopping us from processing it here and selling direct to the Gulf or wherever? Is it finding buyers? Quality? Paperwork? Or do the traders in Birtamod and Siliguri just have the whole thing locked down?

And would farmers even sell to someone new if you paid on the spot? Or do most of them already take advances from collectors before harvest?

Just curios if this is a real opportunity or if there's a reason nobody's doing it?

Discussion/बहस SSBs are dictating on border side

Nepalese passing from Madar(siraha) border to Jaynagar are being thoroughly scanned and not just baggage but also the faces (facial recognition) of the people. Why is it so strict on Indian side and openly open on Nepali sides??!

Question/प्रश्न In a rational discussion, Is it ok to point out the other party in the argument is uninformed?

When I talk to some people on some topics, like economy or philosophy and sometimes politics, I often face people make some very uninformed arguments mostly based on hearsay. It prompts me to point out that you are uninformed and you need to do some reading. But I feel that might easily be misinterpreted as "personal attack".

I see media interviews in the west, where people make scathing argument about the opponents lack of information with strong words (still respectful), but in Nepal it seems its frowned upon. Take for example, Swornim Wagle (I have some disagreements with Wagle but that's besides the point). I assume Wagle knows much more about economics your average politician/interviewer in Nepal. And I have heard many a times that he suggests the other party is uninformed and they need to do a bit of reading. At some point some comedian in Nepal made a satirical piece with repeated use of "tapai padhera aaunus please".

So what do you think, is it ok to say during the argument, that the other party is uninformed? Or do you simply make your argument and leave the "stupidity" on the other side as is?

Messed up passport application.

So i had gotten my passport under Nabalik ( minor) some time ago. After i got my Citizenship, i was told that passport would be invalid and you would need new one. So about 3 months ago i had gone to the CDO and asked about if i should do Renewal or First Issuance. That time they told me first issuance.

so after 3 months i went to CDO and gave all my documents and biometrics under new Issuance. But while i was coming out from giving biometrics i heard that officer saying someone, "aba yo nabalik lai adult passport ma convert garna new issuance bata haina, modification bata janu parcha"...

whats this jhamela?

Travel/यात्रा 19, considering my first big trip: 3 weeks in Nepal and the Annapurna Circuit. Is it worth it?

Hey everyone, I’m planning my first big Asia trip after finishing school. It’s a big decision for me, so I’d love to hear some other people’s opinions before I commit.

The plan:

  • About 3 weeks in Nepal starting in June 2027, through a Worldpackers host in Kathmandu
  • Part of the stay is volunteering with the host, and they’ve offered to arrange the Annapurna Circuit for me
  • The trek: 12 days with a private guide, starting from Chame, $750 including guide, permits, meals and transport

About me: 19 by then, I work out regularly and have done multiple 40 to 70 km hikes here at home, though on flat ground. This would be my first multi-day trek, and my only mountain experience so far is Giewont in Tatras, which is only just a day hike. I do videography and photography, so I’d be shooting a lot along the way. That's also the skill I'm trading in exchange for accommodation and food with the host while staying with them.

What I’d love your input on:

  • Is the circuit realistic and safe for someone my age and experience level, going solo with a guide?
  • How serious is the altitude risk crossing Thorong La as a first-timer, and how should I prepare?
  • Anyone trekked it in June? How were the weather and trail conditions? Host says it doesn't get too rainy there these days.
  • Any safety tips for Nepal in general as a young solo traveler?
  • Anything you wish you’d known before going?
  • And just any other recommendations or ideas you might have!

Thanks in advance!

E-sim or physical sim variant ?

I'm planning to buy a new iPhone, and I've noticed that many variants available in the market are eSIM-only, while others support both physical SIM and eSIM.

For those of you using eSIM in Nepal, especially with NTC or Ncell, how has your experience been so far?

  • Is the network coverage and signal strength the same as with a physical SIM?
  • Have you experienced any issues with calls, mobile data, or OTP messages?
  • Is activating or transferring an eSIM to a new phone easy, or does it require visiting a service center?
  • What happens if your phone gets damaged or you need to switch phones temporarily?
  • Are there any other disadvantages to using eSIM in Nepal?

I'd really appreciate hearing about your actual experiences, particularly if you've been using an eSIM for a while.

Continuing a trekking company in Nepal with animal welfare at its core. Does this model make sense?

Hi everyone,

I am in the early stages of building something new within my family's trekking company, Himkala Adventure. The company was established by my father 11 years ago, and he has been running a free walking tour of Kathmandu since then. I am a trekking guide myself, so I will be guiding the treks personally.

I have been thinking a lot about how tourism in Nepal interacts with animals, and I want to build something different within the company.

The idea is simple. A percentage of every trek booking is set aside for animal welfare in Nepal. Specifically, I want to support:

  • Elephant retirement sanctuaries that provide chain free care for rescued and retired working elephants
  • Street dog and cat rescue programs in Kathmandu that provide sterilization, medical treatment, and shelter

I have not approached any organizations yet. I want to build a track record first, set the money aside honestly, and then approach them with a real proposal rather than asking to use their name before I have done anything.

My plan is:

  1. Continue running the free walking tour in Kathmandu to build reviews and reputation
  2. Sell a few realistic treks that I can actually afford to run ethically
  3. Set aside the promised percentage from every booking in a separate account
  4. Approach animal welfare organizations once I have money set aside and proof that I am serious
  5. Formalize partnerships and name them publicly once they agree

I am not trying to pretend I am already a big ethical operator. I am trying to build one from scratch without cutting corners on animal welfare or on how I treat my guides and porters.

Questions for this community:

  • Does this model make sense to you?
  • Would you trust a company that says it sets aside money for animal welfare before it has formal partnerships?
  • What would make you skeptical?
  • What would make you believe it is real?

I am not here to advertise. I am here to learn from people who actually care about this stuff before I put anything on a poster.

Thanks for reading.

Discussion/बहस My US agency cannot send SWIFT wire for overdue freelance pay. They are asking for Wise or USDT. What are my options in

I am a freelancer based in Nepal working with a US based agency doing assignments. My payment is already overdue, and they recently informed me that they cannot transfer the money via standard SWIFT wire. Instead, they are asking for my Wise account or USDT wallet details.

How can I safely receive this money into my Nepalese bank account using WISE or USDT or Remitly? Is there a better workaround you guys use?

Any advice would be highly appreciated as the payment is late.

Help/सहयोग Mechanical engineer offered an accountant role at a dairy factory. Should I take it?

I'm a mechanical engineering graduate. My neighbour has started a dairy factory in partnership, with an investment of around NPR 2+ crore. They've asked me to take over as their accountant.

I only have basic accounting knowledge, picked up from project engineering and management courses during my degree. I have no formal accounting training or work experience in the field.

Should I accept the offer? What risks should I consider, and what should I do to prepare if I take it?

Any advice, especially from people with accounting or small-business experience, would be appreciated. Thank you!
