[Yousuf] The NFL’s 5 worst coaching decisions of the week and how they should’ve been handled

Bonus Five: Most glaring coaching decisions

5. Liam Coen passes up points … twice: The Jacksonville Jaguars head coach passed up two opportunities for 3 points to instead go for touchdowns on fourth-and-goal. The first time was on the final play of the first half, with the Jaguars trailing 14-7. The second time was midway through the fourth quarter with Jacksonville down 14-10.

Although you can talk me into both, especially considering the long snapper issues, I have more grace for the first one than the second. Down one touchdown and 1 yard away, many would say there’s too much game left to skip the points, but many coaches make that call, especially when offense is the identity of your team. It just didn’t work out. The second one, though, came from the 5-yard line and came after the Jaguars had three pre-snap penalties in their goal-to-go sequence. At that point, the unit was so discombobulated that it made sense to take the 3 points and set up a field goal for the win, or, at worst, if the Philadelphia Eagles scored a touchdown, tie it with a touchdown and 2-point conversion. The Jaguars defense earned enough trust in that game as the Eagles went three-and-out on their next two possessions.

4. Nick Sirianni’s final minute management: The Eagles moved into field goal range at the 34-yard line with 25 seconds left, trailing 16-14, and Jacksonville having just one timeout remaining. The final play of the game should have been an Eagles field-goal attempt. Instead, the Eagles threw the ball twice to stop the clock: once on an incompletion and the other after a 7-yard gain that went out of bounds. Sirianni stood by his decision on that sequence but regretted kicking the ball in play to Ameer Abdullah on the ensuing kickoff, after Abdullah’s 53-yard return in seven seconds set up Jacksonville’s game-winning kick.

That accountability is flipped. Perhaps the Eagles should have kicked the ball out of the end zone; it’s a different situation than the Cowboys and Baltimore Ravens in Week 3 because the Jaguars had no timeouts left. But Abdullah’s return, especially in its efficiency of time and distance, was extraordinarily rare. Sirriani’s decision to allow the kickoff to be a play was the root problem. Whether the calls are straight runs or short passes acting as runs, the clock needed to keep running on the Eagles’ final possession. If that had happened, the kickoff wouldn’t even have happened.

Josh Allen enters Week 6 with 4,960 career rushing yards, just 40 shy of becoming the fifth QB in NFL history with 5,000. With a rushing TD against Las Vegas, he’d also join Justin Fields as the only QBs in the Super Bowl era to rush for a TD in six consecutive games.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are just the second NFL team in the Super Bowl era to go their first five games without allowing a single opposing player to rush for 40+ yards, joining the 1969 Dallas Cowboys.

Micah Parsons wants to ensure 'all the small things fixed first' before return

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Packers star edge rusher Micah Parsons won't play Sunday against his former team, the Dallas Cowboys, but he said on his podcast that if this was Super Bowl week, he would play.

Parsons has not yet returned to practice since last season's torn ACL and meniscus and remains on the physically unable to perform list.

"The biggest thing that people worried about with me, they're like, 'Man, why ain't he back yet?'" Parsons said on the latest episode of podcast, "The Edge with Micah Parsons," released this week.

"If the Super Bowl was this week, I'm playing in the Super Bowl. But it's just about me making sure I have all the small things fixed first. What a lot of people don't figure out is it's not just the ACL. It's like, why did the ACL happen? What was weak? Because it all works together. It's a chain. And throughout the history of ACL, they notice if you come back early, there tends to be an overcompensation injury on the other side."

Parsons said he wants to make sure everything is right before he gets back on the field.

"It's like, what's the point of getting me back for four weeks and then next thing you know, my groin \[is\] bothering me," he said.

Earlier in the week, Packers coach Matt LaFleur said they're still waiting for Parsons to be medically cleared.

"He's a physical specimen, he's a creature of nature for sure and sometimes you've got to make sure that your body is, I guess, what's the word I'm looking for? Everything is just \[in sync\]," LaFleur said. "You don't want one leg to be that much stronger than the other leg is what I'm getting at."

Parsons was injured on Dec. 14 and had surgery on Dec. 29. The Packers typically hold out players coming back from ACL surgery for at least nine months. Parsons is about 9½ months removed from surgery.

Parsons had said during training camp this summer that he thought a return against his former team in Week 6 was "very realistic."

"So many people wanted me to be back for that game to make the game bigger than what it was," Parsons said on his podcast. "It's just another 'Sunday Night Football' game between two good teams. It's not about me. I think that probably let people down. 'Oh, Micah, he's gonna want to be back for the Dallas game.' No, I'm in that phase of life where I just want to be healthy again. That's it."
