Welcome to the galaxy, bounty hunters!
With the recent announcement of the next installment of the franchise; Metroid Ravenous (Metroid 6), we are seeing tons of new players discovering the series. If you’re wondering where to start, you’ve come to the right place.
What is Metroid?
The Metroid franchise basically invented the "Metroidvania" genre. It's all about exploration, feeling isolated on a hostile alien world, finding upgrades, and unlocking new paths. You play as Samus, using weapons and gadgets to traverse the map, battle cool bosses, and save the galaxy.
Here is the community consensus on the best ways to dive in.
Want the best 2D introduction? Play Metroid: Zero Mission (Game Boy Advance / Switch Online Expansion Pack).
Want the best 3D introduction? Play Metroid Prime Remastered (Nintendo Switch).
Want to catch up on the story before Metroid Ravenous? Play Metroid Dread (Nintendo Switch).
“I want to play as MANY games as possible before Ravenous, what does the order look like?”
We recommend playing all the 2D games in chronological order, as stated in the “The 2D Side-Scrollers (The Mainline Games)” section.
“I want to play as FEW games as possible before Ravenous; what do I need to play?”
As of right now, you likely don’t need to play anything! The game will possibly start with a brief recap of the story thus far, and the series is pretty easy to pick up any installment and play. However, if you are willing to play ONE game, go with Metroid Dread!
The series is split into two distinct styles of gameplay. You don't need to play one style to understand the other.
These are the classic, fast-paced action-exploration games. If you want to play the main story in chronological order, here is the path:
(Note: You can safely skip the original NES Metroid and Game Boy Metroid II unless you wish to experience the classic retro gameplay and atmosphere. The remakes are beginner friendly.)
Set between Zero Mission and Metroid II, the Prime series translates the exploration and isolation of the 2D games into a first-person perspective.
If you are new to the genre, the games can sometimes feel frustrating. Keep these tips in mind:
What is the Metroid timeline?
Here is the unified timeline of all canonical Metroid titles that tells Samus’s story from beginning to the end.
*These games are not as core to the series as the other games, and they do not follow many of the same gameplay conventions, but they are canon to the story
Metroid games, especially the older ones, are not very long. It varies from game to game, but expect an average between 5 - 20 hours of gameplay.

It seems to be apart of her now.
Or because of her being part X parasite, can she just fuse and unfuse with the organic parts of the suit?

Buddy of mine made this for me. He added Govee RGB lights that sync with my existing lights. I cant stop staring at it.

My idea:
He does follow the command to hang back and wait for Samus, but she doesn't get there in time, leading to his troops being wiped out. He comes away from it feeling like the Federation relies far too heavily on Samus to clean up their messes and they need to learn to handle things without her, and so he sets out to remove her from the equation, permanently.
I think it serves as a much better motivation that still lets him be shown as a clear bad guy, but still could make you ask if he's right about the Federation depending on Samus too much.
Share your thoughts and what other way you'd go about depicting Sylux(doubt you can do much worse than the actual writers).

For context, I am in a private server with friends and we like to report on the games we beat throughout the year and write our thoughts of, this is why this is a screenshot of a discord message by me. I have been a fan of Metroid for around 9 years now with mainly the 2D games. While I didn't get to play Samus Returns at launch, I did play it eventually. I haven't yet finished Prime Remastered. As for why I decided to play this now, I decided to do a bit of a Marathon of the "2D" games all of which I had finished at least once, the gba games, super and am2r are my most replayed games, especially am2r. The order for this marathon went as follows: Zero Mission, AM2R, Super (with Redux patch), Fusion, Other M, Samus Returns and Dread to cap it off. I played with a traditional controller with a really good controller mapping for the game, this did not make me like the game any more than I would have otherwise. My apologies if what I wrote comes off as very rageful and insensitive but I wrote that immediately upon finishing the game. It just made me mad.

I wanna preface by saying I'm a newgen, I got into the series around the release of Dread after having player Hollow Knight and getting into metroidvanias.
Since then, I've gone back and played a decent chunk of the other titles. I'm very excited about Ravenous, but the trailer struck me as being extremely action-packed and leaning into Dread's more exciting moments. And I like Dread, but I know that a lot of the fanbase found its music and atmosphere to be lacking when compared to something like Super or Prime 1. How do y'all feel about it?

I've been playing Zero Mission for the first time and the build-up and seeing this ugly thing was amazing. Bit annoying to attack but a great fight regardless

Last night i "bought" a copy of Other M for my Steamdeck to play since i have been going through every game in preparation for Ravenous and i did not remember Samus' character being this monotone and trauma focused, i remember her talking about the baby a lot but my god it gets to a point where i don't believe that she's this badass bounty hunter that i know from Fusion, the Prime trilogy and Dread

I absolutely love, Fusion.
The only, only, downside is Adam. "Go there then here then there..."
Without such 'hand holding' where would you honestly place it as a favourite in the franchise?
With me, it'd definitely come 2nd after, Super Metroid.

Hello fellow Metroid fans! I wanted to a little post about something I liked in Other M : the finish moves. In Ravenous trailer we see a little bit of a samurai-inspired kind of finish move. Do you think it will be a recurrent mechanic in the game? Source of gameplay for Other M: Gamer's Little Playground
