App Tips READ THIS FIRST: Setup, FAQs, and App Feedback

Welcome to MacroFactor!

Thanks for downloading MacroFactor, and welcome to our online community! The main purposes of this community are to help you get the most out of the app, and to help you reach your fitness, nutrition, and health-related goals. This post will get you acquainted with a lot of the resources that are available to you so you can hit the ground running, but this post itself is not intended to be an exhaustive resource. Our online Knowledge Base is a comprehensive repository of information related to app functionality, so most questions not addressed in this post can probably be answered by a quick search of the KB.

Before posting here, make sure you read and understand the rules for this subreddit.

Replies to this Post

The MacroFactor team is quite active in this subreddit, but we can’t guarantee that we’ll see and reply to every post. However, we will closely monitor comments on this post. So, if you have critical feedback related to how we can further improve the app, this is the best place to share it, and receive a response from one of the people behind the app.

Of note, that doesn’t include feature requests, bug reports, or individual account issues – our public roadmap and feature request portal, in-app bug reporting system, and email support system are the best venues for those items.

Why MacroFactor?

If you find yourself on this page because you’d seen some chatter about MacroFactor online, a friend or family member told you about it, or you just downloaded it on a whim, you may rightly be wondering, “what’s the deal with this app? What does it offer me that other food loggers don’t?”

The short answer: MacroFactor solves a basic but surprisingly complex problem – figuring out how much you need to eat to maintain weight, or to gain or lose weight at your desired rate. And, much like the problem itself, the approach we take to solving this problem is conceptually simple, but analytically complex. We use your weight and nutrition data to calculate how large of a caloric deficit or surplus you’re in, use that information to estimate your total daily energy expenditure, and use that information to make dietary recommendations to help you gain or lose weight at your desired rate.

If you’re new to MacroFactor, I’d recommend perusing this article, which explains how our algorithms work in considerable detail. This article and this article may also be helpful; they explain how MacroFactor solves many of the problems that arise with other popular approaches to weight management that involve calorie tracking.

Beyond MacroFactor’s coaching features, it’s just a damn good product. We’ve developed the fastest food logging system on the market, to help reduce the friction associated with tracking your nutrition. We also have a proven track record of consistently improving the app, and putting out high-quality educational resources to help our users maximize their results. We’re truly dedicated to ensuring that MacroFactor provides the best premium experience in the food logging market.

Setting up a Macro Program

There are three program styles in MacroFactor: coached, collaborative, and manual.

When you first set up your account, you’ll go through a wizard that will set you up with a coached program based on your goals and preferences. On a coached program, you just need to check in weekly, follow the app’s recommendations, and you’ll reach your goals – MacroFactor will handle all of the week-to-week adjustments to keep you on track. If your goals, preferences, or lifestyle change, you can always create a new program to reflect those changes.

With a collaborative plan, MacroFactor will adjust your weekly calorie budget based on your expenditure and goals, but you have full control over your daily calorie and macronutrient targets. So, if you want to take advantage of MacroFactor’s coaching algorithms, but you also want to pursue dietary strategies that involve macronutrient or daily calorie distributions that go beyond the flexibility offered by coached plans, you can opt for a collaborative plan.

Finally, with manual programs, everything is at your discretion. You can set whatever daily calorie or macronutrient targets you prefer. We don't assign or adjust a weekly calorie budget for you if you opt for a manual plan. You'll still have all of MacroFactor's analytics and tracking features at your disposal, but we won't have any hand in guiding your macro and calorie targets. A manual program may be advisable if you're working with a nutrition coach, and using MacroFactor's food logger and analytics in conjunction with your coach's calorie and macronutrient recommendations.

We recommend coached programs for most users, but you should feel free to swap program styles at any time. Creating a new program or switching between program styles doesn’t result in any loss of data, and it doesn’t require you to set a new goal. You can seamlessly transition between program styles whenever you want.

Hitting the ground running

During onboarding, MacroFactor will estimate your energy needs using a standard TDEE (total daily energy expenditure) formula that considers basic demographic, anthropometric, and lifestyle characteristics. This is the best approach for roughly estimating energy needs in the absence of better data, but it’s entirely possible that this initial calculation will considerably over- or underestimate your energy needs. After 2-4 weeks of consistently logging your weight and nutrition, we’ll be able to estimate your energy needs much more precisely.

However, if you’ve already been tracking your weight and nutrition elsewhere, you can hit the ground running with a more accurate estimate of your energy needs from day 1. You can set up integrations to pull your last 30 days of weight and nutrition data from another app. You can also manually add 3-4 weeks of prior weight and nutrition data (the “Data & Habits screen is the easiest place to do this; option 2 in the prior links) to accomplish the same purpose. By doing this, you can fast-track the initial calibration phase. Similarly, if you already have a pretty good idea of your energy expenditure, you can enter a manual initial expenditure estimate, which will override the typical equation-derived initial estimate.

To be clear, if you either don’t have recent weight and nutrition data, or you don’t want to deal with entering old weight and nutrition data, that’s 100% fine. We’ll generate good estimates of your energy needs after about 14-30 days of consistent logging, and keep them updated over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

As you’re getting accustomed to MacroFactor’s features and food logging workflows, we’d recommend perusing the knowledge base. In particular, the entries on food logging, the food timeline, custom foods and recipes, and the strategy section will likely be very helpful.

Beyond that, the Frequently Asked Questions section of the knowledge base will cover most of the questions new users have about the app, and we’re constantly expanding this section of the knowledge base. But, here are some of the very most frequently asked questions that are addressed in the knowledge base:

Where Can I See Water, Net Carbs, Fiber, and Other Micronutrients?

Does MacroFactor use Energy Expenditure Data from my Wearable Activity Tracker? This article also provides a more comprehensive answer to this question.

Why Don't My Macros Add Up to my Total Calories?

How Does Dynamic Maintenance Work in MacroFactor?

How to Adjust Calorie Targets to Account for Overages, or to Roll Over Unused Calories

How Frequently do I Need to Log my Weight For the Expenditure Algorithm and Weekly Coaching Updates?

How Frequently do I Need to Log my Nutrition For the Expenditure Algorithm and Weekly Coaching Updates?

Do I Need to Log Everything I Eat and Drink to Have an Accurate Expenditure and Use MacroFactor's Coaching Features?

Our one Achilles Heel

MacroFactor’s algorithms are remarkably durable, and can handle almost anything you throw at them. They work their best when you log your nutrition and weight consistently and accurately, but they do a great job of rolling with the punches, and accommodating less-than-perfect tracking. We believe that you shouldn’t need to be a robot to get the most out of MacroFactor.

However, our algorithms have one major Achilles heel: partial food logging.

For example, if you log your breakfast and lunch one day, but not your dinner, the app will have no way of knowing that you simply forgot to log your dinner, and that your actual calorie intake was 30-40% higher than what you logged. That will feed into our daily energy expenditure calculation, which will then feed into our calorie and macro recommendations moving forward. Partial logging (especially if done consistently) is really the only way to wind up with very inappropriate calorie recommendations. Of note, partial logging (not logging entire meals or large snacks) is distinct from consistently not logging some low-calorie items.

So, if you find yourself in a situation where you’ve logged some food for a day, but you either can’t or don’t want to log anything else for the rest of the day, you have a few options (arranged from good to great):

1) Delete what you’ve already logged. Our algorithms do a good job of dealing with missing data. Though, estimating your intake (instead of leaving the day blank) is strongly recommended if your total energy intake from the day differs substantially from your usual intake.

2) Simply “quick edit” the day with an estimate of your total calorie intake. Don’t stress about your estimate too much; it doesn’t need to be perfect. As long as your estimate is in the right general ballpark – within about 30% of what you actually consumed – it’ll all work out. For instance, if your total calorie intake for the day was 3000 calories, any estimate between 2100 and 3900 calories would be fine. Try to be as accurate as you can, obviously, but most people with a little food logging experience can estimate their daily intake accurately enough for the purposes of the algorithms.

3) Our recommendation: Use the quick add feature to estimate the total caloric content in your unlogged meal(s). Again, anything in the right ballpark is totally fine; if you think you ate 1000 calories, but you actually ate 1500 calories, that’s not a big deal in the grand scheme of things (it would work out to an error of ~25kcal/day over the time span that’s relevant for our algorithms – a pretty inconsequential error). This is similar to using quick edit to estimate your calorie intake for the entire day (option 2), but most people can more accurately estimate their intake for a single missing meal than for an entire day.

Wrapping it up

Once again, welcome to the community! We’re happy you’re here. We hope you’ll stick around, and be able to use this community as a valuable resource to help you get the most out of MacroFactor, accomplish your goals, and celebrate your successes along the way.

I remember browsing this subreddit in awe at the result posts before I started a year ago. It really works. If you’re hesitant try a 14day trial, I was hooked after that and it gets easier to maintain a deficit.

Feeling better than ever! Started running and have made massive progress over the year with my times and distances too. Goal is to cut another 15lbs while trying to lean bulk and build muscle with the workout app.

Chart gets crazy over the last few months where I was drinking and eating poorly every weekend, but it is time to lock back in! Thankful for all the inspirational posters and members of the friendly community we have here!

MacroFactor Workouts / Training MFWO Workout Duration Poll

When generating a MacroFactor Workouts program with smart warm-ups enabled and the default exercise rest timers, can you typically complete your sessions within the preferred workout duration range you selected? If not, do you usually need more time to complete your workouts, or are you often able to finish them faster than the duration you selected?

144 votes, 6d left
My workouts approximately match the duration I selected.
My workouts take longer than the duration I selected.
My workouts are qucker than the duration I selected.
I do not use the smart warm-ups and default exercise rest timers (which are relevant to this poll).

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Does anyone have experience with using the ai feature on a daily basis?

I have started working at a new company where they provide lunches. This is obviously really nice and convenient but it makes it impossible to weigh my food and track my calories accurately. I've thus been using the ai feature daily to track my lunch and have been manually tracking the rest of my meals. Does anyone have experience with this? Do you have any tips on how to make the estimates more accurate and can you tell if you managed to achieve the results you wanted?

MacroFactor Workouts / Training Swap exercise based on gym?

So I attend my university gym as well as LA Fitness. I tend to go to the university gym more often just because it's easier when I'm on campus. Both gyms have a plate loaded row machine but the university gym has a slightly different set ups that doesn't allow me to pull both arms at the same time. The LA fitness does, is there a way for me to swap that singular exercise between the different gyms if I end up going to one or the other during my pull days? So far I've created a duplicate of the row exercise and just labeled it for LA Fitness and the other for the university, having two of the same exercise within the workout routine. Will that screw anything up or is it okay to have it like that? Is there a more efficient way? Thank you!

MacroFactor Workouts / Training Has MacroFactor abandoned pure strength training?

I wanted to share some thoughts on the latest update to the workout generator and see if anyone else has noticed this shift.

I have always really valued MacroFactor for having evidence-based, trusted coaches behind the programming. When I select "Muscle Strength" as my primary goal, I am looking for a pure strength setup: heavy compound barbell work, multi-frequency practice on the primary lifts, and minimal fluff.

With the new update, even when selecting Muscle Strength, the generator feels like it has shifted heavily toward a hypertrophy and bodybuilding focus:

  1. Exercise Selection: In 3-day setups, it is now consistently introducing direct arm work (biceps curls, triceps extensions), lateral raises, and calf raises into the weekly plan, while cutting back on secondary compound barbell variations like Front Squats, RDLs, and Incline presses. Direct core training also seems to have been dropped.
  2. Frequency of the Primary Lifts: In the new Full Body and Split options, the frequency of the competition compounds has dropped. Squatting, benching, and deadlifting are pushed to once a week, with sessions padded out by isolation machines rather than compound practice.
  3. Progression: The new default progression has moved away from the previous undulating model and removed AMRAP testing sets entirely, favoring conservative, submaximal volume across longer blocks.

I understand why hypertrophy and modern volume literature are popular, but for those of us who use lifting strictly for strength and athletic carryover, it feels like the pure strength option has been killed.

Curious if others who train primarily for strength have noticed this, or if the team has plans to offer a more dedicated compound-only strength path down the road.

Success / Progress 6’1” 235 Dec 2025 to 172 October 2026

I can see my abs for the first time in my life!
6’1”, 29M. Started the year around 232–235 lb and I’m now around 173 I think around 15% BF currently, I began tracking consistently on January 19. Unfortunately, I didn’t take any photos at the very beginning, I looked like the first photo, just bigger. My wife helped take the latest photo so I could finally pose with both hands free, thank you wife.

I’ve been overweight essentially my whole adult life, so it feels awesome to finally have a physique I’m proud of.
I got DEXA scans at around 205 and 189 lb, with reported lean mass going from roughly 145 to 147 lb. (Not sure what I started at 235lb bodyweight for lean mass) I’m planning another scan at 168, along with repeat bloodwork.
Fingers crossed I’ve maintained that lean mass, or hopefully gained a little, through the last stretch of the cut.

My goal is 168, then maintaining and trying to “gaintain” for a few months before transitioning into a slow lean bulk.
Longer term, I’d love to reach a lean 180–190 lb over the next 4–5 years.

On top of the weight loss, I’ve gotten much stronger at a lighter bodyweight. I think my bench was around 150 lb when I started, and I could maybe do one pull-up. I didn’t start logging workouts until March, so I don’t have exact starting numbers, but here’s where I’m at now.
( I did some weight lifting when I was younger around age 20 but hadn’t for the last 8 years before locking in again I think my best bench pr at that time was 135 for 12 reps)

Current PR’s, weights are in pounds; dumbbell weights are per hand:
Flat barbell bench press: 185 × 11
Low-incline dumbbell press: 75 × 11
Standing barbell overhead press: 115 × 5 / 105 × 8
Romanian deadlift: 335 × 8
Strict pull-ups: 15 reps
Underhand lat pulldown: 200 × 11, with straps
Neutral-grip cable row: 209 × 9
Seated incline dumbbell curl: 35 × 12
Dumbbell lateral raise: 30 × 11
Nautilus leg extension: 240 × 17, with a slower, controlled tempo
Nautilus plate-loaded hip thrust: 500 lb in plates × 10 (I have a very strong ass it would seem)

I train three days a week , full body, typically for an hour and a half , 2 high intensity sets of about 8-9 exercises , taking most sets to failure and leaving about 1–2 reps in reserve on heavy lower-body compounds like V squat, leg press and RDL. Machine numbers are specific to my gym’s equipment.
Still have goals to work toward, but I’m really happy with how far I’ve come this year.

Currently on a 500 calorie deficit but I’m getting impatient and wanted to speed things up a little so I went down to a 750 calorie deficit. Could I go down more given my macros or should I stay at 750?

I’m around 20-25% ish body fat.

Success / Progress first goal hit!

i just wrapped up a cut last week and got down from 150 to 135 on the scale! i know BF estimates aren’t exact but visually i’m looking at the 25-28% range.

i’d love to get down to 20% but ya girl needs a maintenance period after a 16 week cut. i did all this all throughout the World Cup (minimal drinking), staying on top of nutrition 90% of the time, and without extra cardio (just NEAT)

i’m glad i finally found something that works.

MacroFactor Workouts / Training Question on recent program generator changes: Shift from undulating to linear, and 6-week to 8-week blocks?

I noticed a couple interesting changes in the recent update to the program generator when setting the primary goal to Muscle Strength, and I was hoping to get some insight from the team or anyone who follows the programming logic closely.

First, under the previous setup, generating a strength program with default settings used an undulating progression (waving between lower and higher rep brackets across cycles). With the new update, leaving the rep progression option on "No preference" now defaults to a classical linear progression stepping down from higher reps to lower reps.

Second, the overall program length seems to have shifted. Previously, strength programs generated as a 6-week setup (5 training cycles plus a deload). Now under the linear default, they generate as an 8-week setup (7 training cycles plus a deload).

I am really curious about the rationale behind these shifts. Was this based on specific literature or research favoring linear progressions and longer mesocycle lengths for general strength development, or was it more of a practical design choice for user progression and fatigue management?

MacroFactor Workouts / Training Smart progression self destructs on fixed EZ bars

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other What to do when even maintenance feels like a deficit?

Thumbnail

I am a 25f, 5’1, 135ish lbs. I’m fairly active and my estimated maintenance is \~2200. I’ve been tracking for at least two years consistently, and for about 10 on and off.

My tendency is to eat around 3000 calories if I am not extremely cautious. If I’m very cautious I typically get around 2500. If I am using every sheer ounce of willpower in my body I can occasionally get 1800-1900. I don’t think I’ve once in the past year been able to end a day under 1700.

As you can see, this is a problem since I am constantly taking one step forward and two steps back. I’ve gained 20 lbs this year.

Even eating at maintenance is a gargantuan effort and I am hungry and thinking about food all the time.

I have PCOS, but my lab is perfect, and my doctors have confirmed that there is no other underlying cause for my weight gain and hunger. My endocrinologist actually offered to prescribe me wegovy, but insurance doesn’t cover it and I do not want to pay hundreds of dollars to lose 20 lbs when I should be able to do this myself.

I also primarily eat whole foods. However I can and will down 500g of chicken breast or apples in one sitting.

Has anyone else dealt with this? How do you maintain when even that feels restrictive? How do you LOSE?

MacroFactor Workouts / Training Help me get the benefits of Macrofactor Workouts

I just got a trial for the bundle, and while I’m loving Macrofactor Nutrition and that’s a keeper, I’m not so sure it’s worth to pay extra for the Workouts companion app.

Up until now I’ve been logging all my workouts with Strong app and it did the job quite well. The UI for MFW is better, but besides that I’m not seeing any extra benefits. I already got a pretty defined set of exercises I’m doing, so the suggestions don’t mean much.

What else I’m missing? Is there any cool feature I’m not aware of?

MacroFactor Workouts / Training Workouts Program Advice

Hello all,

I recently started using WO to properly progressively overload as I felt as though my brain estimates were not helping me.

Got the app, let it make a program for me and am now in the deload phase after 5 weeks.

I have been consistent in the gym for a year and a half before trying this program by doing 2 hard heavy sets to failure, doing the same exercises every week (Full body 3x Weekly).
The Program was a big change as it had be doing a lot more volume which I don't hate but sometimes seems excessive (Like 18 reps of dumbbell flys was crazy).

My question is what now? Do i Run the same program again? Let it generate me a new one? How long should a program usually run for optimal gains? (it felt weird being done after 5 weeks after consistently doing the same thing for a year)

My confusion stems from knowing that doing the same exercises over and over is the best way to build muscle but is 5 weeks really the ideal time?

I'm open to anything but really just trying to make sure I'm maximizing and getting the full experience of the app.

Thanks in advance friends.

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Injury Logging

I am down with a back injury, so my diet and exercise routine is not where I have it set. I used to take 3 mile walks every day and now I can't walk that well. The back injury has had me down for two weeks, is there any way to log an injury so that things can be modified but I can still make some progress? Maybe not as much progress as before but something so it doesn't think I'm gaining all this weight by eating bonbons, although bonbons actually sound great. Lol

I lost 61lbs so far and 2-3 have creeped back and I just look not great from not lifting pr moving in general.

MacroFactor Workouts / Training Plate Logic: stack them?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello. For weighted exercises, I’ve noticed if I selected weight plates as equipment, it doesn’t necessarily assume I can stack the plates like I can with this exercise. Is there a button I need to select? Perhaps if I recall right, a weighted pull-up does stack the weight plate equipment.

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Dishes and portions

Is there a way to create a dish with a set portion?

For example,I tend to have always the same toasts with the same ingredients that all exist in the MF database and I can scan their barcodes but it would be way easier if I just can create a plate saying "100 grams of this one, 20 grams of this one and 50 grams of this other one"
