I am a 28-year-old law student in India, and I am seeking honest advice, particularly from advocates and people who have experienced something similar.
I completed my engineering degree in 2021 and secured a job at a reputed MNC. However, I left that job to pursue my dream of joining the civil services. Despite reaching the interview stage twice, I could not clear the examination. After years of preparation and several setbacks, I decided to pursue another long-standing dream: becoming an advocate. I enrolled in a three-year LLB programme.
Throughout school and college, I was always a bright and sincere student. Although my journey has had its share of failures, I have never stopped trying to rebuild my life.
Things finally started looking up. I performed exceptionally well in law school, topped my examinations, began visiting the courts regularly, and started building professional relationships within the legal community. For the first time in years, I felt that I was finally moving in the right direction.
Then something happened that changed everything.
During this period, a woman who is also a lawyer approached me, and we eventually entered a relationship that lasted approximately one year. She frequently spoke about marriage, and I took those conversations seriously. I became emotionally attached because I genuinely believed we were building a future together.
After years of career disappointments, I finally felt that both my professional and personal lives were coming together. I had begun to believe that perhaps my difficult years were finally behind me.
Then, unexpectedly, she left me. Her behaviour changed almost overnight, and I was left without a clear explanation. Because she mattered deeply to me, I tried to understand what had gone wrong and attempted to speak with her.
Later, some friends told me that she had been involved with other men. I do not know whether those allegations were true, and I do not want to make accusations without evidence. When I asked her about the situation, she became extremely upset and accused me of defaming her in front of others. Some people had also been discussing our breakup, and she alleged that I had damaged her reputation throughout the court campus.
The breakup left me emotionally devastated. I repeatedly tried to reconcile with her and even apologised because she believed I had defamed her. I was struggling to accept how someone who had spoken so seriously about marriage could suddenly become a stranger.
Soon afterwards, she filed an FIR against me alleging sexual harassment and stalking. I categorically deny the allegations and believe they are false.
The situation became even more frightening because her new boyfriend is an established advocate with connections in the legal community. I believe he influenced the situation against me because I was her former partner. He allegedly abused and humiliated me and threatened that he could send me to prison for years using his connections.
Being a young law student with no established professional standing, I felt completely helpless against someone who was already established in the very profession I was trying to enter.
I even recall police officers telling me that they believed I was innocent but were bound by instructions from their seniors. I understand that the legal process must take its course, and I know that innocence ultimately has to be established through the appropriate legal process. Nevertheless, the experience has left me frightened and uncertain about whom I can trust.
I have always tried to treat women with respect, and people who know me personally have been surprised to learn about the allegations against me. Never in my life did I imagine that I would find myself in a situation like this.
What hurts the most is not just the FIR itself, but the feeling that everything I worked so hard to rebuild is slipping away.
I spent years trying to establish a career. I gave up one path, struggled through another, and finally found something I genuinely wanted to pursue. I started performing well academically, visiting courts, and building connections. I was beginning to regain my confidence after years of disappointment.
Now, I feel afraid to return to the court campus, face fellow advocates, and continue building my career. I worry about what people think of me, whether this incident will follow me throughout my professional life, and whether I will ever be able to regain the respect and confidence I once had.
At 28, I sometimes feel that I have already lost too many years. While people around me appear to be settling into their careers and personal lives, I am struggling to regain my footing once again.
I know that an FIR is not a conviction. I also understand that allegations must be examined through the legal process. But I know the legal process of country where burden of proof lies on man and to prove this even take years of legal struggle specially when opposite party having vast legal experience and influence in legal domain.
Apart from this I also know that they can not proof even a single line from that FIR because everything mentioned is baseless and false their 9/10 allegations in FIR are false and baseless. The only thing true is I tried to convince my gf by repeated messaging her that too didn't include any threat , abuse or blackmail nothing. It only have simple plane request for reconciliation and a sorry because she thinks I defamed her which I actually didn't in real.
I am not looking for sympathy or an opportunity to blame someone publicly. I genuinely want to understand how to move forward.
I would especially appreciate honest advice from practising advocates and people who have faced false allegations or serious reputational setbacks:
