Second 80s theme for the iPod Classic. This one is pure VHS night: neon on purple, TV scanlines and your VCR’s on-screen display.

What’s in it:

• Now Playing: album art with a neon frame, a big condensed title, and a neon equalizer that moves with the music.
• VCR-style status bar: ▶ PLAY / II PAUSE and “SP 1:24”, just like the old tape decks. Spin the wheel and it shows the volume.
• Pause it and it turns into a clock: giant time, the date and the song underneath.
• Neon menus with a glowing cyan selector, plus a mini player with album art while music is playing.

Works on: iPod Classic 6G/7G (320×240) running Rockbox 4.0. Tested on my 7G.

Install: unzip, copy the folders into .rockbox on your iPod (merge, don’t replace), then Settings > Theme Settings > Browse Theme Files > NeonVHS.

Bonus: an optional language file renames “Database” to “Music” and “Plugins” to “Extras”.

while clearing out my drawers a couple of weeks ago, and i found my ipod classic 6th gen 80gb, it has been there for like 7 or 8yrs, at first i thought, it's already dead because of the long time stored away, still, i ordered a 30pin cable and when it arrived, plugged it in, and it charged! after a while connected it of my computer and itunes recognized it... installed rockbox and put in songs and its working, surprisingly the battery still holds a decent amount of charge, but i think that will be priority #1 to change... these things are awesome!

The time has come. I put a 3000mAh battery in my 7th gen and I’m not sure if I got the wrong size but the fit was extremely snug and took some effort to close the case with it in. It also ended up pressing on the DAC / headphone jack too hard and somehow only the right channel in my earbuds worked unless I placed the battery in just right. I had enough and swapped down to a square 2000mAh battery. I took the iPod apart to swap and as I popped the lever up on the battery connector, the connector came with it. Neat. New unexpected project that I feared every time I had to disconnect the battery.

A new logic board is the easy route but the pads were still on and the iPod works great. 20 year old solder joints fail. It happens. Only soldering a handful of times through-hole and never SMD, I figured this was a great time to start. If I fail, I buy a new logic board.

I practiced a bit on a spare board beforehand and decided to full send. For reference, I used flux with 0.3mm lead/tin solder and a pinecil iron with the very fine tip option. Hardest part was the middle pin on the 3-pin side of the connector because it’s tucked right behind that 4R7 part and I risked melting the connector itself. It took some stable hands to push the connector down while getting each pin covered. It doesn’t look great but all points are connected and doesn’t budge if I put some pressure on it. I plugged in the new battery and immediately powered on!

I wanted to share this in case anyone has a fear of their connector eventually separating and needing a solution. If you’ve soldered before, I’d definitely give it a try. It wasn’t the easiest or cleanest job but took maybe 30 minutes of patience. You will definitely need a fine tipped iron and 0.3-0.6mm solder to avoid giant blobs covering all leads at once.

I’m not sure if it fits and I’m afraid that I’d squish the battery? Idk what could happen in the worst case!
It’s my first flash modded iPod and I wanted to build my dream iPod and I don’t want to mess it up 🫣 I already ripped the battery piece off and a friend soldered it on again haha
I’m confused bc the battery is slim it’s with 3000 but the iflash is kinda thick?
🦭idk man

I tried installing Rockbox (Failed numerous times, just won't take)

Now I've attempted to restore my ipod

But I cant find the restore button?

It mounts like a USB Drive, but I am unable to find restore anywhere?

Ive tried erasing and reformatting, first aid, etc nothing works

Any help or guidance would be appreciated!

The songs dont load to the actual ipod BTW, that was a tester

Hey Guys,

I bought a used flash modded 6th Gen with tapitic enginge. Today I tried the shell Swap... Well Bad Idea I guess. I noticed that he used the Chinese flash Adapters and exchanged it for an iflash. Sadly the battery clip (the Brown one) is also gone and replaced by a tie ZIP. You need some pressure on that battery so that the iPod does not Power Off directly.

But to the Point...

I disassembled the Backplate First and then the Front Plate.

My First Test after the Frontplate and clickwheel Swap was semi. The iPod wanted to Boot into Rockbox which was Not installed anymore and the new clickwheel was unresponsive. I reattached it a few times to no avail. The Hold Switch worked up to this Point: Rockbox bootloader told me that it was on or Off after moving it.

After some fiddeling and exchanging for the old one: the old one works.

But now my Headphone jack is now unresponsive, as well as the Hold Switch which does not show a locked Icon anymore. I barely touched the cables. Was more fiddeling with the clickwheel...

How screwed am I?

Kind regrads

Edit: I found that the tapitic engine is not soldered properly. Could that be the cause? yellow cable is loose

I'm having trouble finding any part like a battery replacement or a flash mod that doesn't cost about as much as two brand new iPod classic for shipping, the price of the part itself is pretty insignificant compared to what I have to pay to shipping cuz I don't know what's wrong with the Middle East when it comes to shipping anything from eBay or AliExpress so if anyone here is Middle Eastern and has successfully modded the thing I live in Jordan how can I get these practically free shipping or at least anything that's less than $20 shipping I have two iPod classic 7th gen and I would like to put an iflash and new batteries on them

I've seen that there are board replacements out there for these, but I'm a balanced audio snob and I'm curious if anyone has figured out how to convert one to 2.5/4.4mm output.

I’m troubleshooting a 5th-generation iPod classic. I installed an iFlash- uDual module with 64 GB SanDisk SD card formatted as FAT32, and a 3000 mAh battery.

When I connect it to a Windows PC using a USB 2.0 port, iTunes recognizes it. If I choose Restore iPod, the progress bar runs for hours. When it eventually finishes, the iPod restarts, but iTunes still says it needs to be restored, so the same cycle repeats.

I’ve also tried restoring it in both disk mode and recovery mode, with the same result.

What are the most likely causes, and what troubleshooting steps should I try next? I'm going crazy over this. Have been trying to fix it for a week now.

Hi there,

I picked up an iPod 5.5 which from the start on did not charge and was not read as disk when conected to my iMac.
The iPod was still charged and worked without fault, except charging and syncing.
I tried to contact the previous owner about info how he charged the iPod, but got no info until now.

I ordered a replacement battery, which was precharged luckily, but the symptoms still remained.

When checking with a NFRSI, I see only a minimum charge like 0.08A.

The Logicboard shows no sign of a blown chip near the battery cable.
I checke the battery connector, connection is good, flexcable slides in smoothly
and lock mechanism of the battery connector works fine.

Any ideas what could be the issue here?
(Faulty Logicboard would be worst case)

Thanks!

I'm not having ANY luck with ordering a faceplate from the places that i wanted to. Atomicfaceplates have whatever is going on with them, and for some reason, I can't register an account with iPodmania to order from them, and they haven't responded to my email. It's pretty frustrating, but if anyone has other recommendations for an atomic face plate that's good quality and not crazy expensive, lmk.

Cual es la mejor y peor cosa de tener un iPod clásico o de tener cual sea de los iPod; digan sus anécdotas

Anyone got a ipod 5th gen screen in good condition and willing to sell it? I now need one lmaoo
