Starting Your Invisalign Journey: Essentials & Helpful Tips

Welcome to the beginning of your Invisalign or alternative aligner journey! Whether you're just starting out or contemplating beginning, it's natural to have questions. This guide aims to tackle common inquiries, share valuable resources, recommend essential products, and offer advice. However, please note that this guide does not cover everything.

Before diving in, we urge new members to familiarize themselves with our subreddit rules to avoid any confusion over removed posts or comments and the need to contact moderators.

Consulting Your Orthodontist:

Always consult your orthodontist if you're uncertain about any aspect of your treatment. It's crucial to rely on their expertise for your specific treatment plan.

Orthodontist vs. Dentist:

An orthodontist is a specialized dentist who has undergone additional training in teeth alignment. While some dentists can manage aligner treatments, orthodontists are generally recommended for their specialized expertise.

Finding an Orthodontist for Invisalign:

You can use Invisalign's website to locate nearby providers. Remember, the number of cases an orthodontist has completed (VIP indicator) doesn't necessarily reflect their skill level.

When considering treatment, consult with multiple orthodontists to discuss costs, treatment plans, expected outcomes, timelines, and retainer costs. Ensure you inquire about emergency procedures.

Choose an orthodontist based not only on comfort with the cost and treatment plan but also on confidence in their care.

Essentials After Receiving Your First Trays:

Upon starting treatment, we recommend acquiring the following items, which significantly aid in the process:

  • Ultrasonic Cleaner: Essential for keeping trays & retainers clean.
  • Denture Cleaner Tablets / Invisalign Cleaner: For optimal cleaning results.
  • Ortho Key / PulTool: Especially useful in the initial stages for easy aligner removal.
  • Chewies: Aid in ensuring aligners fit properly.
  • Invisalign/Retainer Case: To safely store your aligners.
  • Travel Pack: Includes essentials for aligner care on the go.
  • Research After Treatment Retainer Options: Consider post-treatment needs early on.

Ultrasonic Cleaner Recommendations:

We've tested various models to recommend the best fit for our community members. Our top picks include:

  • iSonic DS180(B): Offers portability with a battery option, starting at $49.95.
  • ZimaDental Dental Pod: Aesthetically pleasing and effective, priced around $99.99.
  • iSonic F3900: A budget-friendly option with reliable performance, starting at $44.95.

Ortho Key / PulTool Tips:

The PulTool is our top recommendation for easy aligner removal, especially in the early stages. It's affordable and can be included in your travel kit. A discount code "r/Invisalign" offers 15% off for our community.

Chewies and Retainer Cases:

Chewies are great for ensuring your aligners fit snugly. If you opt for the PulTool, it also functions as a chewie. For retainer cases, we suggest sticking with the ones provided by your orthodontist or considering those offered by PulTool.

After Treatment Retainer Options:

As you approach the end of your Invisalign journey, it's crucial to think about maintaining your new smile. SportingSmiles has emerged as a standout option for post-treatment retainers, offering a convenient and effective solution for those looking to secure their teeth alignment long-term or for those looking for an affordable retainer replacement option.

SportingSmiles offers a DIY impression kit for post-treatment retainers, which have proven to be durable and well-fitting, sometimes even preferred over orthodontist-provided ones. SportingSmiles also offers you the ability to keep your mold on file so you have access to QUICK replacements should the need arise, the replacements also come with a discount, making it the cheapest option we have found.

SportingSmiles retainers start at an accessible price point of just $120, making it an economical choice without compromising on quality. This pricing structure is particularly appealing for individuals seeking high-quality retainers without the steep costs often associated with traditional orthodontic avenues.

Start your Invisalign journey informed and prepared with these tips and recommendations. Remember, each step forward is a move towards a perfect smile!

Before & After Results. Trust the process! My transformation (6 months, 15 trays)

Post image
188 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I used to scroll through this subreddit for motivation when I first started, and I'm excited to finally share my before and after.

After 6 months and 15 trays (plus plaque cleaning), I am finally finished!

My teeth were a little bit crowded, misaligned, and had severe staining. Seeing them straight, healthy, and bright now honestly feels good.

For anyone who is wondering if it's really worth it: TRUST THE PROCESS!

Treatment Progress Week 2: I love how snuggly the new tray is

After posting several anxious question posts last week, I'd like to say something positive.

Yesterday was the last day of Tray 1, and it felt so soft and loose. It wasn't moving around or anything, but I was feeling almost no pressure on my teeth anymore. When I changed to tray 2 this morning, I feel surprisingly satisfied with how snuggling it is. I also had issues with how my inner lips were irritated by the attachments or the sharp ends of the tray, and I was worried that the new tray would bring those issues back, but I don't feel it so far.

By the way, any specific things I might want to check when I change a tray? To see if it fits well, to see if I'm on track, etc?

Before & After Results. Tray 1 vs tray 32 - does this look good?

Im on tray 32 out of 34 - I’m not sure if I’m satisfied… of course I will need cleaning and I’m also thinking about whitening but I feel like my teeth aren’t straight enough… should I enquire about refinements? I’m a bit of an anxious and shy person and speaking up or showing dissatisfaction isn’t easy for me so I’m worried I won’t be able to tell my orthodontist that I feel like my teeth aren’t straight enough…

Before & After Results. Bittersweet ending

I have quite the weird reaction to ending Invisalign! First picture is from April 2025, when I first started. I am congenitally missing my lateral incisors. So, my canines were originally where they were supposed to be. We moved them back, got my last 4 attachments off yesterday and I am now on my journey to implants🎉

Bone graft surgery is scheduled for December, then implants whenever those fully heal. I’m still in this teeth journey another year my periodontist said. But I finally feel like I’ve ticked off a box in the process.

Invisalign has been pretty straightforward for me, everything went pretty smooth and I’m very happy with the progress and how much straighter my front teeth especially look!

If anyone has any tips or experiences with implants I’d love to hear them!

Question First full day

• Upvotes

Hey everyone just hit my first 24 hrs with Invisalign. I feel like I’m constantly thinking about them in my mouth and how they feel, which makes sense it’s completely new . But at what point, if ever, will that feeling going away or does it always feel like you have something attached to your teeth all day? Thanks!

Question Last tray.. am I tracking?

Post image
6 Upvotes

I just popped in my last tray, 14/14, tonight!! I’m a little concerned about the spaces between my teeth and the trays.

I’m also wondering if the tooth next to my top left front tooth will rotate a little more so it faces forward. Has anyone had a similar experience with their last tray and ended up needing refinements?

General How did you choose who to go with for Invisalign in London?

Planning to get a Invisalign in London but don’t have anyone around me who I can ask for a recommendation. How did you find your provider? Was there anything at the consultation that helped you decide?

Before & After Results. Miss my old smile

Thumbnail

There was nothing wrong with my top teeth, but bottom teeth were getting crowded and my dentist said a couple of my teeth were starting to align and may start hitting and breaking if I didn't address it.

I'm basically done with treatment & refinements, but now I actually do have teeth hitting when I chew, which the ortho is pretty dismissive about, and looking at pictures, I miss the way my smile looked before. My bottom teeth are technically straight but they are uneven heights and the middle teeth stick up too much, and now my front teeth have been moved up and look shorter.

I know both versions look fine, but I really liked the way my smile looked before and specifically said I didn't want to change it. I'm not sure what to do now.

Question Permanent Retainer Too Bumpy?

Post image

Just got top and bottom permanent retainers put in. Seemed like a rush job and I immediately felt like theres too much bonding. No sharp edges but having this much bonding doesnt seem normal. Asking in the morning to get them filed down but was hoping for other perspectives.

Question Wrong tooth extracted

TLDR:: general dentist extracted tooth 26 but was supposed to extract 25. Aligners have both 25 & 26 in them but 26 has an attachment. I’m on tray 2 & looking ahead to tray 6 it looks like tooth 26 is being brought forward as if it’s still there & tooth 25 is disappearing like it’s not there. Tried to explain to orthodontist but he said trays look good. Is he right or should I be concerned?

Hey everyone, I’m totally new to Invisalign & looking for input from anyone who understands how the trays are manufactured & mapped or may have experienced something similar.

I have substantial crowding of my lower front teeth with tooth 26 most noticeably misaligned & sitting back behind the others. My scan showed that treatment could be done without an extraction & it could bring 26 forward & make room for it but my ortho strongly felt an extraction was needed. 26 was the obvious choice but we ultimately decided on 25 because of some gum loss & sensitivity & felt it would be better to get rid of a tooth that was likely going to be a problem anyway. So I was referred out, had the extraction done & when I got home & took the gauze out I saw the dentist extracted 26. But again I was referred for 25.

Fast forward to when I got my trays, all of the teeth are on the tray which the ortho said was for cosmetic reasons even though I was a little disappointed because I preferred the small gap from the extraction vs a sometimes noticeable crooked tooth I’ve been trying to hide since it came in.

Anyway, two assistants worked on me that day & as did the orthodontist who showed me how the teeth were going to shift & the final tray (through the plastic baggy) showing me how even though I’d only have the 3 front teeth it wouldn’t be noticeable & he sent me home with my first 6 trays with instructions to schedule the next appointment on my last tray which will be in December.

I am now on my second tray & I just do not feel like this is right. It’s not sitting like my top. It sounds like I have something in my mouth when I talk. It’s fraying & digging into my gums & tongue. I can see spit bubbles around the top of the aligners on my front teeth but they aren’t going down to the gum line or even close on one of them. It’s like the extracted tooth is completely messing up how it’s sitting. Plus while it was painful for my tongue & gums, it has not hurt my bottom teeth at all. While my top teeth were pretty painful the first 2 days.

When making the aligners does the orthodontist have to specify if a tooth is going to be extracted & if so, provide the CORRECT one? I just feel like the teeth would have to shift differently to close a gap vs pull a tooth forward?

I did call the orthodontist & he brought me in immediately the next morning when the office was closed. Which is another issue—they are only in the office in my town 1 day a week & I am having surgery in 2 weeks & don’t know how long the recovery will be so that gives me 2 Mondays to get this resolved if needed. He looked in my mouth & told me they were seated beautifully & explained how to file the sharp edges. & on Monday when I took my son to his appointment he asked me how they were feeling & told me to bring them in if they still didn’t fit right. But I just don’t know what fit right means? Or is supposed to feel like? And I clench my teeth horribly so I honestly believe I could make anything “sit beautifully” on my back teeth which is what he was looking at.

Since then I just pulled out all the aligners & compared the shift that is going to happen & a) tooth 26 which is not in my mouth has an attachment on it & b) from what I can tell it looks like the track is to bring 26 forward, it almost looks like it’s turning 25 sideways & then it just disappears so I’m assuming that’s because the aligner thinks 25 is extracted so is viewing it as a gap?

Am I misunderstanding how this works? The orthodontist is so sweet. & he has 40 years of experience & knows his stuff. But he’s old & is forgetful & does misunderstand things sometimes. I’m not questioning that he knows how to do his job, but I’m questioning if he is going by memory on something that he’s not remembering correctly? We did discuss the wrong tooth being pulled & he said he knew & normally he’d be upset but since he just needed any tooth to come out, it didn’t matter. But does it? I really don’t want to question him AGAIN, if I’m just misunderstanding how orthodontia in general works. But I’m extra concerned because tooth 25 isn’t as stable as the rest of my teeth & I don’t want it being treated as if it’s not there.

Any guidance, suggestions, reality checks, explanations, what is/isn’t normal would be really appreciated.

Treatment Progress Am I really done?

I’m supposed to have my attachments removed tomorrow. I’ve had 18 aligners and spent £3200, and i still hate my smile. It looks goofy and awkward - but is the problem really my teeth? I’m now thinking maybe I need lip filler or something else to correct it.

To me, my front teeth clearly still stick out, they are clearly not all straight, and the difference from what I had before is really not worth the money I paid. I still have a “bunny smile” and not the straight teeth I thought I’d have.

Question Teeth won’t stay straight

Finished my treatment 8 months ago and my bottom teeth always shift within 5 minutes of removing my aligners when I take them off to eat. I asked for a fixed retainer multiple times but the doc is not into fixed aligners. Could this be an alignment issue? I’ll add a photo of my teeth below

Question Dog ate my current aligners

I had my aligners set beside me while I was eating and I turned away for one minute and she had grabbed them. They aren’t wearable at all now. I’m on day 5 out of 7 in these trays, I would change them on Saturday given my scan is approved. I messaged my ortho on the app, but it’s not business hours currently so I won’t hear back until at least morning. Should I put in my next set? I’m worried if I put in my next set that my ortho will tell me something different tomorrow and I will mess something up.

Question Refinements wait time, wearing at night - start from scan day or change day?

Hi there

I’m on tray 14 (day 8 of 10). I had my scans for refinements done on day 7. My ortho said to wear for night time only while waiting for refinements, does wearing at night start today (day 8) or after day 10 (my scheduled change)?

Thank you!
