General Extremely Poor Product Quality and Customer Service – IKEA Canada

I purchased the MALM/STORKLINTA bedroom furniture set directly from IKEA North York store, expecting the quality and reliability associated with such a well-known company. Unfortunately, my experience has been terrible, both with the product and with IKEA's customer service.

The bed broke within weeks. It was fine for the first month, but over the following 15 days, the bed repeatedly disconnected from the headboard. Then, one early morning, the bed suddenly broke and collapsed. Thankfully, my thick mattress supported me and prevented what could have been a serious safety issue. A bed should not fail like this after such a short period of use.

The problems did not end with the product. Getting IKEA to resolve the issue has turned into an exhausting experience.

I submitted a negative review directly on IKEA's website, but it never appeared publicly. This raises serious concerns about how IKEA moderates customer reviews and whether negative feedback is being filtered out. Customers deserve to see genuine experiences, both positive and negative, before making a purchase.

The return and pickup process has been equally frustrating. My first pickup was scheduled for the beginning of last week. I stayed home and missed work, but nobody showed up. I then spent around 30 minutes waiting to connect with customer service, only to deal with slow responses and repeated disconnections.

During one particularly frustrating interaction, an agent named Adithya disconnected the chat after nearly an hour of back-and-forth communication. I had to contact customer service again and reschedule the pickup for this week. Once again, nobody collected the bed.

At 9 a.m., I received a message saying the truck was on its way. At 11:45 a.m., I was told the truck was waiting outside, despite receiving no call or meaningful communication to let me know the driver had arrived. I subsequently received a message stating that the pickup had been missed.

The following day, another agent called me without apparently knowing that the same pickup had already been missed twice under the same case number. This lack of coordination and awareness is unacceptable.

I have now been asked to reschedule the pickup for this weekend. After two failed attempts, I have little confidence that this one will be any different. I even asked whether IKEA could issue my refund first and arrange collection at a later time, but I received no response.

For a major company like IKEA Canada, this level of product quality, communication, and customer service is deeply disappointing. Customers should not have to sacrifice work hours, spend hours in customer service chats, repeatedly explain the same case, and chase a company for a refund after receiving a defective product.

Here is my challenge to IKEA Canada: complete the scheduled pickup this weekend and process my refund, or provide a clear resolution without putting me through another failed appointment. I have already given IKEA multiple opportunities to resolve this fairly.

I bought this bed expecting a reliable product. Instead, I received a product that failed within weeks and a customer service experience that has wasted my time and caused unnecessary stress.

IKEA needs to take responsibility for both the product failure and the way it treats customers when something goes wrong. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this product or the customer service behind it.

Assembly Hogbo hinge won’t fully screw into door lip?

i’m really at my wits end with these doors!

i’ll start by saying that yes i did read the manual, but for all three hinges, while attaching to the door at points A, B and C as directed, the screws will barely tighten three rotations before they won’t budge anymore. I’ve tried with multiple screw driver heads, but they seriously will not move at all past that point!

i’m able to slide the mechanism up and down the track with a little bit of force (not sure if this part is intentional? couldn’t find much info on that on the ikea website, in the manual or online) and it seems kind of wobbly in the lip of the door itself, with the middle hinge (C) popping out entirely when I tried to open the hinge. even with a LOT of force, that hinge refuses to move to the ‘open’ position.

is this normal? should i request different hinges? i’ve followed all instructions so far in the manual but it shows these screws being able to be tightened a lot more in the diagram. i really can’t tell if this is fine and i’m overthinking it, or if it’s a faulty part/improper assembly :(

i’d really appreciate if anyone with more experience with these doors could weigh in!

General IKEA kitchen journey woes

Rant incoming...

We bought a full 13k worth of Sektion cabs with Sinarp brown fronts last October prior to any demo or anything being done in our home because we wanted to take advantage of sale pricing. Product sat in boxes in our basement for a few months while we got prepped to begin the project. Full swing started in February of 2026 and took until about August before the majority of it was completed. I did the entire thing myself.

Issue #1: Delivery -

Order came in a few separate deliveries. But the "lowest bidder" system was truly at work here. Every time, one guy and a truck. Had to help him unload to get the product in the house because according to him "we typically just drop it on a pallet in the garage". Not a huge deal the first time, but 3 separate times?!?

Issue #2: Damaged items -

We needed 4 large panels for refrigerator/high cabinets. During post-delivery inspection (apparently IKEA expects you to open and inspect all 9000 items you receive *hard eye roll*), we discovered that all 4 were damaged. I was told it would be months before they could get new ones, so I just figured out how I could use them since they'd need to be cut anyway. Luckily, the damaged parts could be cut off without affecting much in the way they needed to be used.
We only inspected boxes that showed significant damage assuming that a non-damaged box meant the product was ok.

Due to product availability, there were many glitches along with a few minor design changes. Most of these changes went smoothly. Luckily for us, I live 5 min away from the store. So I could just pop-in and pick up what I needed. In-store staff was super helpful. However...

Issue #3: Defective items -

End of August comes - We got down to literally the last door to install, and it has a very visible defect on the front face. OK, no problem, hasn't quite been a year yet so I'll take it back and see what can be done. Return counter tells me that the availability on the door is scarce even though it's not discontinued and that I should just hold onto it and check back in mid-late September as that's when they expect more. Cool.

Late September - No door availability. I figure why be a dick about it, it has a 25yr warranty. Just open a case and get a replacement delivered. Called the "kitchen team" number, and "Dean" was really nice and helpful. Confirms that item still isn't listed as discontinued. Supposedly creates a case and provides me a number. Promises to follow-up either at my number or email.

Early Oct - No follow up, so I call to check status. Lady can't find the case#. After 15 min on hold, the magic "disconnect" happens. I call back and get the original guy again, Dean. Explaining what heppened, he remembers me and asks for the case #. Except now the case # has magically disappeared. He does some checking for the door anyway (30 minute call) and is doing his best to be helpful. Says he'll follow up again and once again I hear nothing.

Today - Called again to check up. Yep, case # still vaporized and there is nothing tied to my original order # or phone #. Lady gives me the old "well why did it take so long to check the door" spiel to which I explain the whole thing yet again and that at this point, I understand it's not a return and am just trying to get a warranty replacement for a part that had a factory defect as it's still in the box. She tells me my options are to keep it or buy a new door. I almost lost my isht at her and she caves and generates yet another case number.

Bottom line;

Be careful about buying a kitchen during IKEA's sale. It seems the sale is for items that are getting phased out which means if anything goes wrong, you might be screwed. Inspect everything despite it looking like it has no damage as there might be hidden defects. For a product sold as a "you can do it yourself" solution, there seems to be pushback or unrealistic expectations on IKEA's part as to how fast this process goes in America.

While I love my new kitchen, this has been 10x more painful since the last one I did in 2017 (obviously pre-pandemic, when everything didn't suck). I'm still short a door and may have to try to pivot yet again. If I ever have to replace things, I'm going with some custom wood from one of the IKEA aftermarket fronts vendors.

Design advice Set positions: mostly beneficial to petit locations/mall notations.

(So sorry for my wall of text but, I been thinking abt this)
-
Genuine good job market idea. Gives more opportunities, brings in more employees with higher sell rates, gives larger opportunities both in growth and position.
IKEA could probably rlly benefit from something like this. ‘Large/specific set’ actors. Helps people understand the use of product better as well as gaining attention to the set.
It would bring a massive part time job pool into the arena of jobs, as well as most likely, better customer gain with performance and sales.
-
I honestly found it a bit surprising they’d launch smaller locations at select malls before this, it would make more sense to officiate this role before opening mall locations. Especially since they’re the most beneficial at malls

General Question about Billy Bookshelf

I’m just wondering why the shelf pegslots have two higher positions in the front. I understand the need to lean the shelves back to stop books from falling, but almost 3 inches is crazy!

General IKEA BESTÅ, enough space and airflow for consoles?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I’m moving out soon and considering the BESTÅ setup for my TV. I’d put my Xbox One in one of the open compartments and keep another free for a future console.

My main concern is whether the openings are tall enough and provide enough airflow to keep the consoles cool.

Ideally, I’d like doors that cover only half the height instead of roughly three-quarters, but I can’t find that option.

Any suggestions?

Looking for Work table for Ekenaset

I have an Ekenaset, which I find really comfortable, but I need a decent table I can use my laptop at while sitting there. I had an Ugglerum side table which was a nice height but I needed it somewhere else more. I could get a second one but was also thinking about something else more designed to be a work table, like the Bjorkasen, Bollisdan, etc.

Does anyone have any experience with any of these? Bonus if you've used it at an Ekenaset!

It has been my recurrent source of home decor inspiration. I wish Ikea made more of them. The book reminds me of the domino edition ones. So many timeless ideas.

Looking for Trying to find a desk top

Hi, like five or six years ago I bought what I believe to be a Lagkapten/alex in Toronto Ontario Canada, except now I’m trying to get a new desktop and I can’t find this colour? I can only find straight white the grey or the black. I’m going to be honest this seems like hell to me. I hate those ones I love this one. The desktop is shredded to bits, has water damaged, and stained to hell and back. I need a new one but getting what I think the available colours are seems like actual hell to me. Can anyone see if they can find the product I actually bought? Because I DID buy it here. Thanks for any help

Assembly PAX hinge issues

Post image
2 Upvotes

We’re currently setting up our PAX wardrobes (three in total) and have run into an issue with the doors and hinges.

All the doors appear to be identical, with no left- or right-specific versions. To install a door on the opposite side of a wardrobe, we’ve had to flip it upside down.

Initially, everything looked fine, but we’ve since noticed that the hinges sit at different heights when the doors are flipped. This limits where we can install shelves and drawers inside the wardrobes.

Are we missing something in the assembly process, or is there a different way the doors are meant to be installed?
Thanks for your help!
