Mod Post IKEA PC SETUP GUIDE

I think it’s time this community received a proper setup guide

IKEA PC Setup Guide
Welcome to [r/ikeapcstations](r/ikeapcstations).
Building an IKEA PC setup but don’t know where to start? This guide covers the most popular IKEA desk combinations, common questions, and real setups from the community.

-THE CLASSIC IKEA PC SETUP
The setup you’ll see most often is:
Countertop + 2× ALEX drawers
The most common countertops are KARLBY and SALJAN.
This gives you a large desktop, plenty of storage, and a clean battlestation look.
-Community examples:
KARLBY + ALEX setup
KARLBY + ALEX + storage
98” SALJAN + ALEX

-WHICH IKEA DESK SHOULD I GET?
KARLBY / SALJAN
Best known for the large countertop-style battlestation.
Good if you want:
● Lots of desk space
● Multiple monitors
● Work + gaming
● ALEX storage
LAGKAPTEN
A popular option for smaller or more budget-friendly setups. It can be paired with ALEX, ADILS, OLOV, or other supports.
Real LAGKAPTEN setup

TROTTEN
Worth considering if you want a deeper desk or a more traditional desk/frame setup.
Real TROTTEN setup

Don’t know which one?
Start with: How much space do I have? → How much desk depth do I want? → How many monitors? → Do I need storage? → What’s my budget?

-HOW BIG SHOULD MY DESK BE?
This is one of the most common questions!

Around 47–55”
Good for smaller rooms and simpler setups.

Around 60–63”
A versatile size for gaming, dual monitors, and ultrawides.

74–80”+
Better suited for large multi-monitor setups, work + gaming, or shared setups.

Don’t only look at length—Desk depth is just as important, especially with large monitors and monitor arms.

-DO I NEED ALEX DRAWERS?
No.

ALEX is popular because it provides both storage and desk support, but you can also use:
● Desk legs
● IKEA desk frames
● Custom supports
● Other cabinets
● Non-IKEA supports
The classic setup is:
KARLBY/SALJAN +ALEX +ALEX
But there is no requirement that your setup follow that formula.

-DO I NEED CENTER SUPPORT?
Maybe.
This depends on the desktop, its length, how it’s supported, and how much weight you’re putting on it.
Things that increase the importance of support include:
● Very long countertops
● Heavy monitors
● Multiple monitor arms
● Heavy equipment concentrated in the middle
Don’t assume another person’s setup will behave exactly the same as yours.
For example, the community has both long unsupported setups and setups with additional reinforcement.
98” SALJAN with additional support
If you’re unsure, post your proposed setup and dimensions to the subreddit before buying.

-CAN I USE A MONITOR ARM?
Yes, but pay attention to the desktop you’re mounting it to. Monitor arms concentrate a lot of force into a small area.
Before installing one, consider:
● Desktop construction
● Monitor weight
● Number of monitors
● Clamp location
● Desk support underneath
Some community members use plates/pads underneath monitor-arm clamps to spread the pressure.
KARLBY + monitor arm discussion
If you’re using a lightweight tabletop such as LAGKAPTEN, pay particular attention to its current IKEA load specifications.

-CAN I BUILD AN L-SHAPED IKEA DESK?
Absolutely!! One of the easiest approaches is using two tabletops.

A popular combination is:
2× LAGKAPTEN
LAGKAPTEN L-shaped setup
You can also build L-shaped setups using larger countertops.
KARLBY L-shaped setup
Before buying, measure both walls and account for doors, windows, outlets, and your monitor placement.

-CAN I USE A NON-IKEA DESKTOP?
Absolutely!
One of the best things about IKEA setups is that you can mix and match.

A common combination is:
Non-IKEA countertop + ALEX drawers
For example:
Butcher block + ALEX setup
You don’t need every component to come from IKEA for it to be an IKEA PC setup.

-CABLE MANAGEMENT
Plan your cable management before putting the desk against the wall. Some desks even include built in cable management.
Think about:
● Power strip location
● Monitor cables
● PC cables
● Ethernet
● USB
● Under-desk cable tray
● Cable clips/Velcro
A little planning here can make a much bigger difference than buying expensive cable-management accessories afterward.

BEFORE YOU BUY
Measure these first:
Wall space
Desk depth
Desk height
Monitor size
Monitor-arm placement
Available storage
Door/window clearance
Then choose your IKEA components.
Don’t build your desk around somebody else’s room.

SHOW US YOUR SETUP
Already have an IKEA PC setup?
Post it to [r/ikeapcstations](r/ikeapcstations).
We want to see:
● Gaming setups
● Workstations
● Budget setups
● Small rooms
● Large battlestations
● L-shaped setups
● Before & afters
● Custom IKEA builds
Your setup doesn’t have to be expensive or perfect.
If you built it, show us!

STILL HAVE QUESTIONS?
If this guide doesn’t answer your question, make a post OR refer to the Q&A to see if your question has already been answered:
Include your:
● Budget
● Available space
● Desired desk size
● Picture of the room/setup if possible
The more information you provide, the easier it is for the community to help.

Hope this helps :)

Question Mounting a monitor arm to an IKEA IDASEN desk

Hi, just as the title suggests I was curious if anyone knows if it is safe to mount a monitor arm to the IKEA IDASEN (non standing version), or is the tabletop too fragile and will it risk breaking or bending using an arm. I was considering purchasing one this weekend and mounting my 27inch monitor to it, but was a bit scared when I heard the inside is like a honeycomb paper filling or something, but I also read that for many people they didn't have any issues and saw some YouTube videos where people mounted their monitors and it seemed fine. Thanks :)

Question trying to decide on what to buy for a station LAGKAPTEN / OLOV vs ANFALLARE / OLOV with monitor stand for two either on the sides or in the middle

Post image
3 Upvotes

basically that, i don't have that much money for a desk that goes up and down with an electric device, and neither i want one, just a simply desk, but also one that allows me to rest my legs at around 60-70 cm tall and so far i found those two to be the one that reach that size that doesn't cost a PREMIUM price and also the table isn't very tiny so i have space for various things and what not.

my idea is to have my pc on another furniture and just the monitors with either dual or separate stands clamped and then just do whatever on the middle

all in all are those two good options? if not what else would you rather recommend? (even if i have to spend a bit more to which i guess it's time to save more money)

the measurement i'm looking is for something like (120-160)cm x (60-80)cm for the table and height around 60-65 cm minimum so i can rest my feet on the floor

LAGKAPTEN & SPÄND Combination?

currently I have lagkapten with adils and it is wobbly at the base of the legs no matter if there's anything heavy on the table, can someone confirm whether it would be wobbly with SPÄND or not? Im thinking that the legs need support beams along with the length of the tabletop instead of the width to make it stable, but I couldn't find anything like that in ikea.

Question Underdesk PC Mount for MITTZON Sit-Stand

I want to mount my PC to the bottom of my MITTZON Sit-Stand desk, I have the 1400x800mm tabletop and my PC weighs roughly 10kg and is ~430x210x385mm.

Are there any mounts or solutions that you guys know of to mount my PC? I have looked at similar posts to try and get an idea but haven’t been able to find one that works for my tower.

Hey, newbie with new setup here,
My current setup is EKBACKEN 246cm/ 2 ADILS legs at the back & 2 ALEX drawers. I need to setup double monitor arms for 2 users (laptop + 27”; and 2x 24”). Currently on desk are 2 24” monitors & 1 14.5” laptop, so will add 1 27”. Will the EKBACKEN hold 2 double arms (in picture) clamp at the back? Any advise to make it more stable?
Many thanks!

Question Any good solid wood tops for two Alex drawers that ship finished?

Caveat: I want them in 6 ft lengths as well as 4 ft (5 ft would also work).

My wife and I will have our own desks in the same room, mine will be two Alex units, hers will be 1 Alex with legs and I would like the tops to match.

We were planning on getting butcher block tops from Lowes, mine in 6 ft in hers in 4 ft but I've never stained and finished anything and it makes me a little nervous. What are the options out there for pre-finished tops? We'd prefer to stick with the wood look.

Edit* My original plan was Karlby but my wife does not want a 6' desk (too large) and I want the desks to match.

Question Flintan ikea chair and weels ruined with obese person on ?

Hello, I have a problem. One of my family member that have a weight around or a bit over 90 kg, sit today on a new ikea chair (like Flintan chair or similar, with weels).
Now, the problem is that since I have two of these chairs office, the one where the obese family member sit on, it seems that weels don't move fluid when I'm sit on , like the other chair similar to Flintan chair.
And the same thing happens with a old ikea chair office (always with the weels). They move like do a sort of 'attriction' even if a person is sitted on.

Now I'm a bit upset because even if I tell to this family member to not sit on it as ikea chair not support obese people (even if it declare can support 110 kg), is this for the chair in general itself, but as for the weels it definitively do something if even a person of 90 kg sit on it.

I still have to fight with this person, as still don't believe me when I tell her to NOT sit on the chairs of ikea, as it's not for her massive weight.
Now I'm worried when I'm not at home, she could use still my chair (the second one ) new, and destroy also those weels.
I need to find out other testimony that stated that the weels will not destroyed literally, but definitively, the weels started to work less better , as I noticed in my experience.

This was noticed also by others? Have you ever notice that the weels of Flintan and similar chairs are not 'fluid' anymore if a person of 90 kg or more, sitted on ?

Please let me know if someone noticed this too!
Thanks!

Question Do I need a leg for a 6 ft solid wood butcher block on two Alex Drawers?

My wife and I are making new desks and since the Karlby doesn't come in the size we want, we're going with a solid wood counter top from Lowes. Hers will be 48 in on 1 Alex with 2 ADILS legs, mine will be 6 ft with 2 Alex. Do I need a leg in the middle? Could I just do a ~4 ft length of metal bolted to the bottom side?

Hers will just have a laptop so not worried, mine will have a tower (on the side over the Alex) and a monitor in the center (maybe 2 monitors down the line).

Magnus evo ikeaAlex drawers question

So I'm highly considering getting the Magnus evo standard. I have some size constraints in my room.

Currently I have the standard set up with 2 Alex drawers on each end however with this Magnus evo I'm hope to have one drawer on the left outside the leg however the on the right I want the alex drawer to sit inside.

Is this possible? I'm currently sitting about 74cm hight, very curious as I'm not sure whether to replace my Alex drawers or just stack them?

Question BRYTNING?

Hi all. I’m trying to create a more comfortable desk set up at home but working with limited space and it has to be multifunctional. I currently have the smallest Micke desk and hate it - it feels too short and it’s tiny. I use the desk for getting ready doing hair and makeup, working from home, gaming etc so I really want a comfortable and usable set up. Looking through IKEA and the new BRYTNING desk has caught my eye but I’m wondering if anyone has tried it or if anyone has suggestions for a small space? I have a bit of wiggle room to go bigger than the MICKE but not massive

Current set up
