My Cloud Flight died out of nowhere. Wouldn’t turn on, no LED, wouldn’t charge, and on my PC it only showed up as “Avnera AV6202”. The official updater just sat forever on the screen asking me to connect the headset, even though it was plugged in.
Before turning to AI I’d already tried everything: updating the firmware, removing and reinstalling drivers, different cables, different ports, a different PC. Nothing.
So I tried working through it with Claude, and it wasn’t a first-try thing either. We hit a bunch of dead ends: hunting for drivers, monitoring the connection in PowerShell, testing Windows device events, running an older version of the updater, compatibility mode... It got the diagnosis wrong a few times, at one point it was convinced the battery was dead. But it owned its mistakes and changed course based on what the tests showed.
In the end we figured out what was going on. The headset wasn’t physically broken. The HyperX firmware had gotten corrupted, and without it the headset’s chip boots into a factory mode and identifies itself as “Avnera AV6202” (VID_170D&PID_0101) instead of HyperX. The official updater doesn’t recognize the headset in that state, so it just waits forever. That’s why none of the usual fixes work.
I managed to bring mine back, and it’s working normally now: LED, audio, mic, battery.
For context: I’m not a programmer, I work in marketing. What impressed me most was the process. Claude didn’t “just know the answer”. It came up with hypotheses, asked for specific tests, interpreted each result and kept narrowing it down until it found the cause.
If your headset has the same symptoms
To check, plug the headset in with the cable, open PowerShell and run:
Get-PnpDevice -PresentOnly | Where-Object InstanceId -like "*VID_170D&PID_0101*"
If anything shows up, your headset most likely has corrupted firmware, not dead hardware. Don’t throw it away. If it’s still under warranty, open a ticket with HyperX and explain exactly that: the headset shows up as “Avnera AV6202” (VID_170D&PID_0101) and the official updater doesn’t recognize it. That description will save you a lot of back and forth with support.
I’m not affiliated with HyperX in any way.
TL;DR: dead headset showing up as Avnera AV6202, official updater wouldn’t detect it. With Claude, I figured out it was corrupted firmware, not hardware. If yours looks the same, don’t throw it away.
