You’d HATE living in a chivalrous society.

Too often, I see comments like “he’s gotten too comfortable disrespecting people without getting punched in the face.”

We have a legal system that protects freedom of speech. You can generally say what you want without fear of violent retaliation, provided you don’t cross into assault.

What these people are advocating, whether they realize it or not, is an honor-based society where the threat of violence enforces behaving with chivalry. Say the “wrong“ thing to someone, and they’re morally justified in beating you into submission.

I don’t think people understand what that means. In a society where might makes right, intellectual arguments give way to physical intimidation. People train to fight to impose their will on others. Some even deliberately provoke insults so they can claim offense and justify retaliation.

I’m from Albania, where this mentality runs RAMPANT. In just the past few months, I’ve had several confrontations simply because someone took offense at me not greeting them. And if you fight back, you spark a gang war where the next time you can get your jaw clocked (on sight).

Worse, resolving these disputes requires a mediator (not law enforcement). You have to identify someone the other person respects, negotiate over who was wronged, and potentially bargain for concessions depending on how much leverage you have.

It’s a fragile society built on insecurity, where perceived disrespect becomes a pretext for violence and people use intimidation to compensate for their bruised egos.

You don’t want a society where every bruised ego can become a legitimate excuse for violence. The West doesn’t realize how good they have it.

serious hot take Socrates was correct, democracies are inherently flawed because the average person is too misinformed and/or stupid to vote.

Even in the age of information, where the sum of human knowledge is at our fingertips, humans vote for people who are openly vile and corrupt. I understand that democracy has brung about a lot of personal freedom for people, but pretending it's the pinnacle of human government and we can't possibly come up with anything better is just people being lazy. I don't have any ideas right now, but it is a problem.

gender R/evilwomeninc is a hate sub and should be banned

Self explanatory. It is vitriolic and openly promotes hate. For example I saw a post on there that said "men should start life in prison and have to prove their way out". This is so incompatible with basic ideas of human rights or even feminism.

The typical justification I see is that "these are just jokes and shouldn't be taken seriously". I think this is an absurd double standard given that any other type of "jokes" are rightfully condemned when they target people on the basis of race, gender religion or etc. Like racist jokes are still a type of racism.

casual hot take Hot take: I hate forced representation in Disney movies as a black girl

Like making Disney characters black, I didn't ask for it, I can bet that like 60% or more people like me didn't ask for it. Y'all can't even shame me for this one, I'm black too. Well brown but still, not the light brown where I literally look white, just normal light brown. But back to the point, I literally hate it, it's pathetic too. Another thing, I hate forced LGBTQIA representation in Disney, when they make a character like that, they make their sexuality their whole thing, I don't see them doing that for a straight character. Like, being gay is just what type of person your attracted to irl, but no, Disney has to exaggerate it and make them hold hands 24/7, no sane irl person holds hands with someone that often. It's like they're trying to force us viewers to know that they support the LGBTQIA. I dunno how to describe this off feeling where they're just making a character for their attraction towards a specific gender. Example, the little mermaid 2023, they removed scenes to make Ariel look like the brave hero, something just seems off. It wasn't even the right hair color. Strange world, 2022. In the film, Ethan’s crush on Diazo is completely, unconditionally celebrated by every adult around him. While intended to portray a supportive family, critics and audiences noted that treating a teenage romance as entirely flawless and without any typical teen awkwardness or friction makes it feel hollow and unrealistic. Luz and Amity went from a brilliant, complex "enemies-to-friends" dynamic in Season 1 to a couple that felt like they were perpetually locked in a honeymoon phase.

casual hot take The act of trying to understand the point of view of the other side in an argument has been demonized

In the past, when we had debates, it was considered a positive thing to try and understand the reasoning and motivation of the other side. Only by doing that could we possibly attempt to change their mind or even come to the conclusion that we were in fact wrong.

Currently, this is verboten. The sentiment of "no, I have no intention of understanding evil" reigns supreme and is applauded. In fact, now the attempt to reach out and understand has been twisted into "well only someone with dubious morals would try and understand evil people".

This is honestly unproductive, anti-intellectual and makes any reasonable debate impossible.

You’re not a feminist if you hate men

The whole point of feminism was to be equal with men, not above men. Sure you can hate someone’s actions and they so happen to be a man, but accusing all men of being horrible is not what our ancestors fought for

casual hot take The problem with kids learning isn't that schools are failing, its that there are more people just having kids than being parents.

A lot of you know what im talking about, the difference between a parent and someone who has kids.

A parent reads to their kids at night, a parent establishes rules, routines, respect for themselves and others.

Too many of you are just having kids.

Source: Been teaching for about 15 years now. Its scary.

we need to teach boys what consent looks like, not just tell them what it means

boys are not shown consent... they are told what consent is, and that's the problem.

first, there is right and there is wrong. rape is rape. i don't need to "show" my son not to murder or rape someone.

but in the grey areas, i think we have a structural problem caused by both men and women.

simple everyday example of showing what to expect for consent:

last season, i was at a basketball game with my son when a 9ish.. year-old boy next to me needed to change shirts. his mom told him to switch right there in the stadium so they could hurry up. no asking if he was comfortable. no consent. he was not comfortable.. and i noticed it. most girls would at least be asked if they were okay with it, even if they had an undershirt on.

dads do it too. a daughter asks her dad to stop tickling her, and he'll almost always stop. a son asks the same thing? maybe. maybe not.

those of us with sisters have lived the double standard in how much they're allowed to push or physically pester their brothers versus the other way around.

rinse and repeat this 10,000 times as boys grow up.

one of the biggest problems with consent is that we show girls what consent looks like, but tell boys what consent means. then we expect boys to grow up understanding all the nuances we've taught girls through experience.

There's no meaningful moral difference between flying a Nazi flag and flying a Confederate flag.

Both represented political movements built around the belief in racial superiority, and both defended systems responsible for some of the most abhorrent acts in human history. The Confederacy fought to preserve chattel slavery, a system built on the ownership and exploitation of human beings. Generations of torture, rape, forced reproduction, sex trafficking, family separation, and murder. These weren't unfortunate exceptions; they were absolutely fundamental to how it operated.

Both flags represent movements that sought to establish and maintain racial hierarchies through systematic oppression and violence. America would have been better off pursuing a much more comprehensive rejection of Confederate ideology after the Civil War, similar to the de-Nazification efforts Germany undertook after World War II. They should have completely dismantled any Confederate institutions, political influence, and cultural glorification that allowed its disgusting ideology to survive. Unfortunately, because they did not, much of its worldview survived and brought an era of terrorism, lynchings, public executions, segregation, disenfranchisement, and the deliberate destruction of Black communities to uphold the stupid worldview that "my skin color makes me more entitled to rights than you"

The "heritage" is a war started to defend one of the most disgusting human practices that ever existed. If your family fought for the Confederates, congratulations; they fought to uphold people's right to abuse, torture, rape, murder, and deny all human rights to a group of people because of their inherent entitlement that their skin color was meaningful enough to allow such abuses to take place against another group of humans. They were disgusting people, and if there is any deity, hopefully, they are suffering the same injustices they fought to uphold.

lukewarm take Everyone should be discussing wages with coworkers and friends

I think it’s stupid to hold back about the money we’re making and be secretive about it. TBH the only people that benefit from being secretive about how much we make are the corporations that want us to stay ignorant about just how much we might be getting taken advantage of. There is NO individual benefit from being secretive about how much you make.

casual hot take If the United States is gonna be a country of gun owners, we should be teaching gun safety in schools.

I know, I know, but hear me out. There is so much pride surrounding the second amendment in this country. We as a society should take on the responsibility of teaching people about gun laws, how to properly operate one, and how to safely store it.

If we truly think guns are an American right, and a way of life. Then it should be standard learning in school. Along with all the other Bill of Rights and Amendments.

casual hot take Slut shaming is stupid. Sexually active women are awesome!

So I was gonna say "promiscuous women" but that wasn't a big enough margin.

A lot of people try to shame women for having sex and enjoying it, but dude have you had sex with a woman? It’s great. Literally. Never in my life could I imagine laying with a woman and thinking less of her after having so much fun. It's even stupider to hear about a woman having sex with someone else and getting bothered when I know somebody had a great time.

Now in the case of cheating etc those people suck, all cheaters and predators suck, but genuinely if someone is bothered by a woman's sex life all I hear is jealousy.

If you prefer virgins that's fine too, but it further proves my point that sexually active women are awesome because as your relationship progresses with that specific virgin, your sex life will just get better and better.

Also WHO HATES SLUTS ANYWAY? They provide love and excitement to people everywhere. While somebody is hating on that one "slut", she's giving someone the time of their life and she'll probably make another person's night later on.

Everybody should enjoy SAFE sex and not be shamed for it tbh

Wearing gloves in culinary settings is 90% of the time dumb

I’m sure there are some exceptions, like eating or preparing an insanely spicy food, but as a general rule I think people don’t understand gloves. First, washing your hands properly pretty much makes them as safe as having gloves. Second, gloves are not immune to contamination. Like if you’re using gloves to mix chicken with a marinade, you can’t touch anything until you’ve taken the glove off and also washed your hand again, whereas you could have just mixed it with your hand and then washed it. It causes an extreme amount of plastic waste. People that go on about food safety and gloves are just full of shit most of the time, they’re not very useful.

casual hot take Influencers should not be allowed to purchases giant cheese wheels

I don't think influencers should be allowed to buy cheese wheels, especially Parmigiano Reggiano. And obviously the same goes for any other cheese. I've seen it so many times: they buy a wheel, and a couple of months later it starts getting moldy.

Then they have to start scraping it and wasting a lot of it, or they throw the whole thing out because they didn't know how to seal it properly.

An entire wheel is also extremely hard for one family to finish. It could take months, even years.

So I don't think shops should sell them to influencers. The amount of waste it creates is unreal. It really grates my cheese.

serious hot take I hate how jobs expect our lives to revolve around them

No Jerry, I don't know if I'll be free next month on 23rd at 6pm. How am I supposed to know that, and because of that, now all my other plans are revolving around this shift and 20 others that same month.

I just don't think humans were supposed to live that way at all, and before anyone says "you can self employ" "have a flexible schedule" etc etc BULLSHIT. Around 90% of people work for someone else, and it's not because they're lacking education or anything else for that matter, it's just how it works in this world we created.

More than the jobs where you can't even arrive late one time because you're a human being and shit just happens you're fired. From the very childhood you're studying to get a job in order to survive. This is just depressing as hell considering the fact we are all on a flying rock in the middle of nowhere and none of this matters. We just made this up.

I don't want my job to be the center of my life, heck it I don't even have a dream job because why would I even dream of slaving my life away until I'm 60 or even more.

cold take Job interviews should evaluate ONLY job-related skills, not interview-passing skills and unrelated skills.

I honestly can't believe how we as a society have accepted the current state of job interviews. If I am an engineer - assess my engineering skills. Not my soft skills, not my language knowledge (my position requires 0 knowledge of any foreign language), not my "team skills", and finally not my skills of passing interviews. Advices like: ask for a cup of coffee and then ask where you can wash it to show good manners. I am neither a dishwasher not an etiquette teacher. Non of these things matter. God I hate HR

casual hot take people with road rage shouldn’t be allowed to drive

road rage puts other’s people lives in danger. it screams that you don’t know how to manage your frustration and anger.

people should be made to get anger management treatment counseling before driving because it people are getting mad at simple things like passing another car, brake checking, etc. getting road rage in heavy traffic doesn’t make sense when everyone is trying to get to point A to B

yes, i know insurance is expensive as well as damage cost yet that is no excuse to let your anger get the best of you and follow the other driver around.

a lot of crashes happen due to road rage

serious hot take Universal healthcare would be great for small businesses and entrepreneurs

I don't see this point talked about enough in the universal healthcare debate. Repubs are usually all for entrepreneurs and small businesses. They rage against taxing them, promote bootstraps and starting your own business instead of demanding better working conditions from major corporations.

And yet, we're not talking about how much universal healthcare would help small businesses. How many people would LOVE to take the leap at starting a small business, but they can't leave their job because they need the health benefits? How many people would love to grow a business and hire people, but can't afford to provide benefits to employees?

Universal healthcare would free them up to focus on the business instead of being worried about how to provide healthcare for their family and business.

casual hot take Bring back brothels, legalize prostitution in a safe setting. NSFW

We are all just trying to get laid. The world would be a happier place if anyone and everyone could get laid. I can't speak for women, but a lot of young men tie their self esteem to sexual success. And if virginity follows them into adulthood, it can govern and taint their whole existence and may even make them bitter. I'm not sure why brothels disappeared, maybe church movements or other religious efforts but religion is losing influence. This stigma around sex work, or sex in general in the US, has to end. It's not immoral when participants are operating under their own free will. It'll take the pressure off of everybody, men seeking sex and women feeling pressured into sex, or vice versa. If women or men volunteer to work in brothels under their own free will, then what's the problem?

casual hot take There is no such thing as a "bad" word

When I was a kid, I used to be very cautious about not saying "bad" words/phrase like "what the heck," "what the hell," "darn," "dang," and "stupid." I'd audibly gasp whenever I heard someone say them in front of me, and admonish them not to because I thought the words themselves were bad.

In my childhood, my friends and I would police each other's speech while coming up with clever little tricks to make it seem like we're using a bad word or invoking a bad symbol, when really we weren't. For example, instead of saying "Fuck you," my friend would say, "Fluck you," but in such a way that the "l" sound was barely audible. And then I'd be like, "Bro!! How could you say that?" and then he'd respond, "What? I said 'fluck you', not the f-word!" Another thing we'd do is lift our ring fingers at each other from a distance to achieve the same effect.

Once I was chasing my sibling around the house and I whimsically yelled at him, "Come here, you little rascal!" My mother then pulled me aside and very sternly asked who taught me that word. I had no idea what she was talking about or why she was confronting me as if I had just committed some serious crime, and was shocked to learn that she took offense to my use of the word, "rascal." She was reacting to "rascal" as if "rascal" was "fuck."

Over the years, as I've developed a more sophisticated understanding of language, I've come to realize that "bad" words are simply those words that a certain group of people agree are bad/dirty/naughty, and that there's nothing about the words themselves, which is to say the letters that make them up, or the syllables that one articulates when saying them, that is actually bad. The very concept of a "bad" word, that is never to be said under any and all circumstances, is totally incoherent and indefensible.

serious hot take Close friends are much more reliable than a lot of romantic relationships, but people forgot about it

We would have much less issues with loneliness if people didn't position [platonic] emotional closeness and [platonic] touch from friends and family so low on the scale of their priorities.

Obviously, it's not everyone and not everyone are fully responsible for their loneliness. I know it. But a lot of people are lonely and are absolutely touch starved despite friends and family. And a lot of examples show that it works and you don't desperately need romantic relationship then cause your basic needs are met and you don't fall into a wolf pit when that one person disappears for whatever reason.
