MOD TAKE [MOD POST] - Updates and Feedback v1

Hello hello! Good afternoon and happy Wednesday to all.

Just jumping in with a few quick updates around the sub, along with a request for feedback from all of you: the hot takers who keep this place active, argumentative, occasionally chaotic, and generally worth moderating. Nothing dramatic, just a handful of general updates intended to keep things running a little more smoothly and make the subreddit easier to use, understand, and participate in.

Here's a list of what's been going on:

  • Rules update/clean up

The previous rules provided a great foundation for the subreddit, but some were difficult to interpret or apply consistently. A few overlapped with one another, while others left too much room for confusion in certain situations.

We’ve updated the rules to make them clearer, reduce unnecessary overlap, and better address the issues we most commonly encounter in day-to-day moderation.

  • AutoMod - 10 day account rule

As with any subreddit, we have our fair share of bots to deal with. We also encounter users who, after being banned, create new accounts and return as though nothing happened.

To help address both issues, we've implemented an AutoModerator rule that automatically flags and removes posts and comments from accounts less than 10 days old. While this won't eliminate the problem entirely, it should help reduce spam, discourage ban evasion, and keep discussions genuine and the community running smoothly.

Tangentially related, AutoMod will also now automatically clear reports made against AutoMod’s own post and comment removal messages.

To those of you reporting the robot for doing exactly what we told the robot to do: we see you. The robot also sees you. The robot does not care. evil robot laugh

  • Mod recruitment

We'll be reopening moderator recruitment in the next few days to add a few more people to the team. The subreddit stays fairly active, and bringing on a few additional moderators will help us keep up with reports, removals, and general day-to-day moderation.

The basic requirements are:

  1. Must be at least 21+ years of age
  2. Must have or be willing to get a Discord account as that's where we communicate
  3. Must be willing to meet once a month with the moderator team
  4. Must not have any logged infractions on your account

Newer or less experienced mods are welcome to apply.

  • Hot takers: help us judge the heat

While we welcome feedback at any time, there’s one idea that’s been floating around the mod team that I wanted to put in front of everyone. It has to do with how we determine the “temperature” of a hot take.

Currently, users can choose their own post flair to indicate how spicy they believe their take is. The obvious problem is that this is entirely subjective, and I think we’ve all seen posts labeled as "NUCLEAR hot take" that could comfortably be stored next to the frozen peas. We’ve been discussing whether there might be a fun way to let the community weigh in on how hot or cold a take actually is, rather than leaving that determination entirely up to the person who posted it.

One idea that came up is community voting. Similar to systems used in other subreddits, users could cast a vote in the comments based on our existing flair categories. After a set amount of time, the votes would be tallied and the post would automatically receive the flair the community decided it deserved.

We think it could be a fun way to give everyone another way to participate in the sub. Maybe you don’t have a three-paragraph rebuttal ready, maybe you don’t particularly care enough to argue about it, but you do know that calling that take “hot” is an insult to thermodynamics. Cast your vote and carry on.

Let us know what you think in the comments. If this is something people would like to see, we'd love to get to work setting it up!

In closing, we genuinely value feedback from the community. Even if your thoughts are unrelated to anything mentioned in this post, please feel free to leave a comment on this post and let us know how we’re doing.

Whether you think a rule should be added, removed, or changed, have suggestions for how moderation could be improved, or simply have an idea you think would make the subreddit better, we’d like to hear it. Community feedback helps us understand what’s working, what isn’t, and where we can continue to improve.

Thanks for reading!

Thorvald

If you have to ask if it’s political, it’s political. THIS INCLUDES RACE!!

You people can’t have a civil discussion and I’m only one person and can’t moderate all of you who can’t keep an unkind thought to themselves.

Another note: STOP WITH THE SEXISM!!

serious hot take Socrates was correct, democracies are inherently flawed because the average person is too misinformed and/or stupid to vote.

Even in the age of information, where the sum of human knowledge is at our fingertips, humans vote for people who are openly vile and corrupt. I understand that democracy has brung about a lot of personal freedom for people, but pretending it's the pinnacle of human government and we can't possibly come up with anything better is just people being lazy. I don't have any ideas right now, but it is a problem.

serious hot take Hot take: it's not cool to call someone racist because they don't like Disney blackwashing characters and calling it representation.

As a black girl, like, if we're being specific I'm brown but not like in a white way. Back to the topic, if I point out a issue in the black community without mentioning my race, people will call me racist. If I say that I don't like Disney black washing characters instead of making a original character without mentioning I'm black too? I'll get called racist. What's up with that? Tiana is representation, not whatever slop they make nowadays

serious hot take Hot take! keeping a animal with this level of deformities is abuse

Post image
156 Upvotes

Keeping any animal in this condition is animal abuse they cannot thrive in this condition it does not matter if u “rescued them” or hatched them out urself, we should let them go. Reptiles run on instinct and will move eat and do “normal activities” even if they are this deformed. I have seen snakes with kinks so bad their bodies fused to itself and attempt to move and strike. I have seen lizards born with their insides on the outside attempt to eat. They are in pain but reptiles especially run on i instinct and keeping them with this level of deformity is nothing but greed and a raging god complex.

You’d HATE living in a chivalrous society.

Too often, I see comments like “he’s gotten too comfortable disrespecting people without getting punched in the face.”

We have a legal system that protects freedom of speech. You can generally say what you want without fear of violent retaliation, provided you don’t cross into assault.

What these people are advocating, whether they realize it or not, is an honor-based society where the threat of violence enforces behaving with chivalry. Say the “wrong“ thing to someone, and they’re morally justified in beating you into submission.

I don’t think people understand what that means. In a society where might makes right, intellectual arguments give way to physical intimidation. People train to fight to impose their will on others. Some even deliberately provoke insults so they can claim offense and justify retaliation.

I’m from Albania, where this mentality runs RAMPANT. In just the past few months, I’ve had several confrontations simply because someone took offense at me not greeting them. And if you fight back, you spark a gang war where the next time you can get your jaw clocked (on sight).

Worse, resolving these disputes requires a mediator (not law enforcement). You have to identify someone the other person respects, negotiate over who was wronged, and potentially bargain for concessions depending on how much leverage you have.

It’s a fragile society built on insecurity, where perceived disrespect becomes a pretext for violence and people use intimidation to compensate for their bruised egos.

You don’t want a society where every bruised ego can become a legitimate excuse for violence. The West doesn’t realize how good they have it.

serious hot take Political activism is mostly performative

Political activism is more about looking like you care than actually making a difference. People may post about political issues or support certain causes just to look good, fit in, or gain approval from others. Instead of focusing on solving problems, they focus on showing everyone that they care. However, not all activism is fake, because raising awareness and speaking up can lead to real change. The problem is when people care more about appearing to be good people than actually doing something to help. Most people don’t have that deep knowledge about the issues that they’re protesting. Many people that protest for George Floyd didn’t give a shit about people like him before they could use him as a symbol.

gender R/evilwomeninc is a hate sub and should be banned

Self explanatory. It is vitriolic and openly promotes hate. For example I saw a post on there that said "men should start life in prison and have to prove their way out". This is so incompatible with basic ideas of human rights or even feminism.

The typical justification I see is that "these are just jokes and shouldn't be taken seriously". I think this is an absurd double standard given that any other type of "jokes" are rightfully condemned when they target people on the basis of race, gender religion or etc. Like racist jokes are still a type of racism.

casual hot take The act of trying to understand the point of view of the other side in an argument has been demonized

In the past, when we had debates, it was considered a positive thing to try and understand the reasoning and motivation of the other side. Only by doing that could we possibly attempt to change their mind or even come to the conclusion that we were in fact wrong.

Currently, this is verboten. The sentiment of "no, I have no intention of understanding evil" reigns supreme and is applauded. In fact, now the attempt to reach out and understand has been twisted into "well only someone with dubious morals would try and understand evil people".

This is honestly unproductive, anti-intellectual and makes any reasonable debate impossible.

casual hot take Nerds are bigger bullies than jocks/"cool people"

Went to school with a lot of performing arts, sports and generally popular people who were surprisingly ok when you actually talk to them. The jocks mostly didn't care and the real popular people were confident in a nice way.

The real a-holes in school? The nerds. They would gatekeep everything, trashtalk anyone and deliberately unwelcome you because you're a "normie". Picture Sheldon Cooper or the comic book guy from the Simpsons. The sheer condescension of nerds with any degree of status within that group outweighs any of the jocks I've encountered.

I would feel more self conscious joining a D&D club than any gym.

serious hot take I hate how jobs expect our lives to revolve around them

No Jerry, I don't know if I'll be free next month on 23rd at 6pm. How am I supposed to know that, and because of that, now all my other plans are revolving around this shift and 20 others that same month.

I just don't think humans were supposed to live that way at all, and before anyone says "you can self employ" "have a flexible schedule" etc etc BULLSHIT. Around 90% of people work for someone else, and it's not because they're lacking education or anything else for that matter, it's just how it works in this world we created.

More than the jobs where you can't even arrive late one time because you're a human being and shit just happens you're fired. From the very childhood you're studying to get a job in order to survive. This is just depressing as hell considering the fact we are all on a flying rock in the middle of nowhere and none of this matters. We just made this up.

I don't want my job to be the center of my life, heck it I don't even have a dream job because why would I even dream of slaving my life away until I'm 60 or even more.

casual hot take What's your take on businesses implementing strict "no cell phone recording" bans?

Because of the trend of people trying to mock and humiliate others for social media content, a lot of places are now saying that if you take out a phone for a call, you have to step outside, and if you're holding your phone up in a way that suggests you are recording, or if you walk in with a phone on a selfie-stick, they'll immediately ask you to leave. Furthermore, some places even claim that if you sneak a phone into the premises and post video of other customers online, you will be banned for life. This is basically trying to defend their customers from being attacked via social media by wannabe influencers who have traits associated with borderline and narcissistic personality disorders. Thoughts?

the side that is angry / insults people and doesn't respond to direct questions is generally the incorrect side

now obviously theres such a thing as nuance. but i would say 90% of the time if there are two parties involved. and one of those parties either is 1. mad 2. insults you. 3. cannot clearly respond to what you are saying calmly. they are most likely the incorrect side.

and im talking in whatever you do. this can be applied to anything. so GENERALLY. if i notice these 3 things. there are danger signals going off in my head that. without analyzing too deep. this person is probably wrong or has a tendency to be wrong.

like lets flip the script. lets say you said theres a floating talking unicorn outside. i walk outside there clearly is not. most likely i would think you are weird or having an episode. but i wouldnt feel the need to show anger or hatred towards you because you're saying something incorrect. its the incorrect side that generally shows that anger or hatred. because they cant prove their point in reality. so they lash out instead.

casual hot take Influencers should not be allowed to purchases giant cheese wheels

I don't think influencers should be allowed to buy cheese wheels, especially Parmigiano Reggiano. And obviously the same goes for any other cheese. I've seen it so many times: they buy a wheel, and a couple of months later it starts getting moldy.

Then they have to start scraping it and wasting a lot of it, or they throw the whole thing out because they didn't know how to seal it properly.

An entire wheel is also extremely hard for one family to finish. It could take months, even years.

So I don't think shops should sell them to influencers. The amount of waste it creates is unreal. It really grates my cheese.

casual hot take The problem with kids learning isn't that schools are failing, its that there are more people just having kids than being parents.

A lot of you know what im talking about, the difference between a parent and someone who has kids.

A parent reads to their kids at night, a parent establishes rules, routines, respect for themselves and others.

Too many of you are just having kids.

Source: Been teaching for about 15 years now. Its scary.

NUCLEAR hot take Society was ruined by the internet and the internet shouldve stayed a concept

Society was already pretty cooked with how politics and humans in general would be acting but the introduction of the internet indirectly fucked up humanity as a whole, since everybody can say literally whatever they want without consequences and do whatever online without consequences in general and this has ruined peoples state of minds where they will say the most horrible thing of all time like sexual comments regarding minors, or blatant racism without a second thought and you know why? Because they're saying it behind a screen and not in person where they'd face severe consequences and actual punishment.

People also have severe cases of superiority complex where they straight up attack others online for the simplest of things or act like theyre some kind of god and everyone thats not them is wrong and everything they say is a fact not a opinion, no human irl before the internet had as much nonexistent self control as alot of people irl do now since they get mad at people irl for the simplest things and or do physical attacks or attempt to do them to others for any reason. Look at all of these people you see online and irl anymore and these grown ass MEN in their 20s have the mentality of a 5 year old and get mad or upset for the most smallest of things and don't hesitate to actually yell at people irl and why is this? Its either A the less likely thing and its mental issues or B theyve been online practically 24/7 and have lost all control of their emotions because theyre way too comfortable acting immature online and they forget they have to act normal in real life.

Not only that people will literally risk their lives and or others lives and do literally anything all for the sake of money, youtubers and tiktokers for example have actually died when making videos because they ignore the warnings and caution signs and common sense pushing self preservation instincts to the side entirely, when they could've still been alive today if they werent so ignorant just trying to get views as if it meant anything since to them their life is a toy to play with and not something to protect at all costs like for example that prank youtuber who got shot after intentionally pissing off somebody just for views essentially harassing him, and the guy pulled out a pistol and shot the youtuber and while the youtuber survived and the guy that shot him doesnt deserve praise for it the youtuber fucked around and found out and almost lost his life all for the sake of views, and people do "challenges" that are just self harm or killing themselves all for money like the tidepod challenge.

And the internet has also ruined so many lives by people getting doxxed having their info leaked online for everyone to know everything about the person for any reason or people get their mental health destroyed because of constant harassment and death threats online by people who again, say all of these things because they know they wont face consequences but the people getting harassed dont go offline they just choose to be online despite the fact its destroying their mental health.

And so many other things just make the internet the worst decision ever made to where if the internet didnt exist society could've been much better since peoples attention spans couldnt get destroyed from scrolling so much and being online practically 24/7 with no breaks, and maybe wouldn't be seeing as much deaths due to people not doing things solely for views that got them killed and itd also be better for the environment with no data centers that require water and a huge amount of ram just to stay online and usable, and peoples self preservation skills and general knowledge on how to do things everyone in general should know would also be alot better since they'd have no reason to do literal suicide from doing a "challenge" if they had no reason to, and people wouldn't be as stupid as they are now due to the fact they'd have to rely on their own knowledge and learn things themselves instead of jsut pulling out their phone and googling it and then forgetting right after and people wonder why children have no attention spans, as if they have unrestricted internet access where they can discover nsfw from a insanely young age and when they grow up they just end up porn addicts since the internet just gives it to them and it gives dopamine to where if they dont have the internet they go into withdraw like a god damn drug addict, etc. The internet really fucked up alot of things mainly being how people act irl

lukewarm take The brony movement couldn't happen on today's internet

• Upvotes

It's sad that the internet went from being a place where the brony movement could explode and thrive in popularity to a place where such a thing would likely cause a huge controversial shitstorm before quickly dying out. Bronies had issues, yes--any community has issues. But it was generally a laid back, progressive, and welcoming community of guys who refused to let gender norms dictate their interests. I legitimately cannot think of ANYTHING like that happening these days on today's internet.

I mourn for that time.

Wearing gloves in culinary settings is 90% of the time dumb

I’m sure there are some exceptions, like eating or preparing an insanely spicy food, but as a general rule I think people don’t understand gloves. First, washing your hands properly pretty much makes them as safe as having gloves. Second, gloves are not immune to contamination. Like if you’re using gloves to mix chicken with a marinade, you can’t touch anything until you’ve taken the glove off and also washed your hand again, whereas you could have just mixed it with your hand and then washed it. It causes an extreme amount of plastic waste. People that go on about food safety and gloves are just full of shit most of the time, they’re not very useful.

gender r/itsthatbad is a hate sub and should be banned

Self explanatory. It is vitriolic and openly promotes hate towards women. For example, I saw a post on there that said women enjoy being raped. This is so incompatible with basic ideas of equality or even human rights.

The typical justification I see is that “these are just my made up facts and shouldn’t scrutinised at all” or that it’s just a place to vent. I think this is an absurd double standard given that any other type of generalised hatred is rightfully condemned when it targets people on the basis of race, gender, religion or etc. Like racist jokes are still a type of racism.

casual hot take Hot take: I hate forced representation in Disney movies as a black girl

Like making Disney characters black, I didn't ask for it, I can bet that like 60% or more people like me didn't ask for it. Y'all can't even shame me for this one, I'm black too. Well brown but still, not the light brown where I literally look white, just normal light brown. But back to the point, I literally hate it, it's pathetic too. Another thing, I hate forced LGBTQIA representation in Disney, when they make a character like that, they make their sexuality their whole thing, I don't see them doing that for a straight character. Like, being gay is just what type of person your attracted to irl, but no, Disney has to exaggerate it and make them hold hands 24/7, no sane irl person holds hands with someone that often. It's like they're trying to force us viewers to know that they support the LGBTQIA. I dunno how to describe this off feeling where they're just making a character for their attraction towards a specific gender. Example, the little mermaid 2023, they removed scenes to make Ariel look like the brave hero, something just seems off. It wasn't even the right hair color. Strange world, 2022. In the film, Ethan’s crush on Diazo is completely, unconditionally celebrated by every adult around him. While intended to portray a supportive family, critics and audiences noted that treating a teenage romance as entirely flawless and without any typical teen awkwardness or friction makes it feel hollow and unrealistic. Luz and Amity went from a brilliant, complex "enemies-to-friends" dynamic in Season 1 to a couple that felt like they were perpetually locked in a honeymoon phase.

You’re not a feminist if you hate men

The whole point of feminism was to be equal with men, not above men. Sure you can hate someone’s actions and they so happen to be a man, but accusing all men of being horrible is not what our ancestors fought for

casual hot take Automobesity, SUVs, 4x4s Battering Ram Flatbeds - their popularity is an arms race based on infanticide.

I once asked someone why they have such a big car, and they replied; "because if we crashed, it wouldnt be my kids that died."

Pretty sure that's as honest as it gets, and is the underlying cause and effect of an intense feedback loop pushing increasingly bigger cars to market.
