MOD TAKE [MOD POST] - Updates and Feedback v1

Hello hello! Good afternoon and happy Wednesday to all.

Just jumping in with a few quick updates around the sub, along with a request for feedback from all of you: the hot takers who keep this place active, argumentative, occasionally chaotic, and generally worth moderating. Nothing dramatic, just a handful of general updates intended to keep things running a little more smoothly and make the subreddit easier to use, understand, and participate in.

Here's a list of what's been going on:

  • Rules update/clean up

The previous rules provided a great foundation for the subreddit, but some were difficult to interpret or apply consistently. A few overlapped with one another, while others left too much room for confusion in certain situations.

We’ve updated the rules to make them clearer, reduce unnecessary overlap, and better address the issues we most commonly encounter in day-to-day moderation.

  • AutoMod - 10 day account rule

As with any subreddit, we have our fair share of bots to deal with. We also encounter users who, after being banned, create new accounts and return as though nothing happened.

To help address both issues, we've implemented an AutoModerator rule that automatically flags and removes posts and comments from accounts less than 10 days old. While this won't eliminate the problem entirely, it should help reduce spam, discourage ban evasion, and keep discussions genuine and the community running smoothly.

Tangentially related, AutoMod will also now automatically clear reports made against AutoMod’s own post and comment removal messages.

To those of you reporting the robot for doing exactly what we told the robot to do: we see you. The robot also sees you. The robot does not care. evil robot laugh

  • Mod recruitment

We'll be reopening moderator recruitment in the next few days to add a few more people to the team. The subreddit stays fairly active, and bringing on a few additional moderators will help us keep up with reports, removals, and general day-to-day moderation.

The basic requirements are:

  1. Must be at least 21+ years of age
  2. Must have or be willing to get a Discord account as that's where we communicate
  3. Must be willing to meet once a month with the moderator team
  4. Must not have any logged infractions on your account

Newer or less experienced mods are welcome to apply.

  • Hot takers: help us judge the heat

While we welcome feedback at any time, there’s one idea that’s been floating around the mod team that I wanted to put in front of everyone. It has to do with how we determine the “temperature” of a hot take.

Currently, users can choose their own post flair to indicate how spicy they believe their take is. The obvious problem is that this is entirely subjective, and I think we’ve all seen posts labeled as "NUCLEAR hot take" that could comfortably be stored next to the frozen peas. We’ve been discussing whether there might be a fun way to let the community weigh in on how hot or cold a take actually is, rather than leaving that determination entirely up to the person who posted it.

One idea that came up is community voting. Similar to systems used in other subreddits, users could cast a vote in the comments based on our existing flair categories. After a set amount of time, the votes would be tallied and the post would automatically receive the flair the community decided it deserved.

We think it could be a fun way to give everyone another way to participate in the sub. Maybe you don’t have a three-paragraph rebuttal ready, maybe you don’t particularly care enough to argue about it, but you do know that calling that take “hot” is an insult to thermodynamics. Cast your vote and carry on.

Let us know what you think in the comments. If this is something people would like to see, we'd love to get to work setting it up!

In closing, we genuinely value feedback from the community. Even if your thoughts are unrelated to anything mentioned in this post, please feel free to leave a comment on this post and let us know how we’re doing.

Whether you think a rule should be added, removed, or changed, have suggestions for how moderation could be improved, or simply have an idea you think would make the subreddit better, we’d like to hear it. Community feedback helps us understand what’s working, what isn’t, and where we can continue to improve.

Thanks for reading!

Thorvald

You people can’t have a civil discussion and I’m only one person and can’t moderate all of you who can’t keep an unkind thought to themselves.

casual hot take Hot take: I hate forced representation in Disney movies as a black girl

Like making Disney characters black, I didn't ask for it, I can bet that like 60% or more people like me didn't ask for it. Y'all can't even shame me for this one, I'm black too. Well brown but still, not the light brown where I literally look white, just normal light brown. But back to the point, I literally hate it, it's pathetic too. Another thing, I hate forced LGBTQIA representation in Disney, when they make a character like that, they make their sexuality their whole thing, I don't see them doing that for a straight character. Like, being gay is just what type of person your attracted to irl, but no, Disney has to exaggerate it and make them hold hands 24/7, no sane irl person holds hands with someone that often. It's like they're trying to force us viewers to know that they support the LGBTQIA. I dunno how to describe this off feeling where they're just making a character for their attraction towards a specific gender. Example, the little mermaid 2023, they removed scenes to make Ariel look like the brave hero, something just seems off. It wasn't even the right hair color. Strange world, 2022. In the film, Ethan’s crush on Diazo is completely, unconditionally celebrated by every adult around him. While intended to portray a supportive family, critics and audiences noted that treating a teenage romance as entirely flawless and without any typical teen awkwardness or friction makes it feel hollow and unrealistic. Luz and Amity went from a brilliant, complex "enemies-to-friends" dynamic in Season 1 to a couple that felt like they were perpetually locked in a honeymoon phase.

You’re not a feminist if you hate men

• Upvotes

The whole point of feminism was to be equal with men, not above men. Sure you can hate someone’s actions and they so happen to be a man, but accusing all men of being horrible is not what our ancestors fought for

Basically every take about trans people here isn't hot.

Casually being a bigot about trans people isn't a hot take. It's the status quo.

serious hot take "Reverse" racism being or not being actual racism misses the point

Let's say punching up or being antagonistic soley to white people is not racism. Fine, I don't see how that makes it okay. You can call it whatever you want but I have zero interest in associating with people with that have that much hate in their hearts. Congrats on finding a way to justify being a mean person. It's also just not productive. I have never been able to solve anything in my life by being awful to someone except to satisfy my own selfish needs.

If you have disdain for someone for being born a certain way, be it race, sex, height, genital size, whatever, you are a bad person, and no matter what words you can say to justify the hate you have towards someone, you won't be able to change that until you recognize that attributing negative generalizations to immutable characteristics is not the way to become a nicer person.

Edit: Already seeing a ton of comments saying reverse racism isnt real in support of it being racist or not racist. This wasn't the point of this post. I'm talking about the intention behind what you're calling reverse racism or racism. It doesn't matter what it's called, you're still an asshole for looking down on people for what they can't control.

Too many women are falsely labeled as TERFs

Women who are lesbians and don't want to have sex with a penis, but never expressed anything even remotely transphobic, are too often labeled as TERFs. This basic preference which is completely their right and there's nothing wrong with it, makes them transphobic in many people's eyes. In the r/actuallesbians sub, any woman who expresses that she doesn't want to have sex with a dick is permabanned. I think this is absurd and throwing baseless accusations to women who have preferences will result in even more TERFs. Let people have their preferences and stop trying to guilt trip them into something they don't want to do.

casual hot take I dislike "real communism" arguments

It seems like any time communism is brought up someone says "that wasn't real communism" or "real communism hasn't been tried."

Real is what happens in the real world. There has never been a communist country that lived up to to the hypothesis put forward by Marx of what communism would be. But a hypothetical communist country is by definition not a real one. Real is what happens in the real world, after the test to prove or disprove the hypothesis. You don't get to look at the real outcome and say "it doesn't match my hypothesis therefore it's fake." And we've had a lot of "experiments" in the 20th century.

It would be like someone saying "well we've never seen a country where zero government regulation led to free markets self regulating away all anti consumer practices, therefore real capitalism has never been tried."

I mean, heck there's literally a fallacy called "no true Scotsman" about this. And yet I'm regularly told that communism is the most scientific, rational system ever.

NUCLEAR hot take You're a fucking idiot if you participate in the gender war

This is literally some "boys rule, girls drool" / "boys go to Jupiter and get more stupider, girls go to college and get more knowledge" type shit. Did we not grow out of this phase in like first grade?

Please go outside and touch some grass. Maybe read a book or two.

Don't have kids if you can't afford to take care of them.

Recently heard a little kid talking about how he's been throwing up blood for days but his parents won't take him to the doctor because they can't afford it. They've worked at a fast food joint for pushing 20 years. I just don't understand why you wouldn't at least try to climb the latter... You have kids to take care of man. Don't stay stationary for 20 fucking years when you have multiple kids to care for. I'm sure I have a privileged point of view but from where I'm standing... Poor people shouldn't purposely have kids. And I'm not even mad at the people, I'm mad at capitalism.

casual hot take If the United States is gonna be a country of gun owners, we should be teaching gun safety in schools.

I know, I know, but hear me out. There is so much pride surrounding the second amendment in this country. We as a society should take on the responsibility of teaching people about gun laws, how to properly operate one, and how to safely store it.

If we truly think guns are an American right, and a way of life. Then it should be standard learning in school. Along with all the other Bill of Rights and Amendments.

People are way too harsh on modern teenagers

I teach high school, and whenever people ask about my job, they immediately start explaining how much they hate teenagers. They also need me to confirm they're stupid, and this happens everywhere: the doctor's office, Uber rides, and many first-date questions end up as "Is it true they don't even know how to read?!" Listen, can teenagers be annoying? Yes, undoubtedly, but many of them are kind and genuinely reserved people trying to get through life. When you flip that question back to the person who asked it, they rarely mention a book they have read, and if they do, it's usually some pithy book that's written for sixth graders. I say that to say, give these teenagers a break.

gender Most progessive people would still view a man as bisexual or gay for dating a trans woman.

• Upvotes

Im sure we are all familiar with the bisexual man discourse. Where a lot women that are progessive, feminists, and especially LGBTQ allies. Say they won't date a bi man.

They have that same mindset with men who date trans women too. They don't view those men as straight. They just think those men are bi, because they are having sex with a person that was born male. And that's gay asf to them.

Im going to go on a tangent about a liberal streamer here. Because that streamer is a perfect example of what im talking about here.

There is this popular liberal political Streamer, who name is Dean Withers. Every now and then, dumb Conservatives would try to pull a valid gotcha question on him. They would ask him, if he would date a trans woman. He would always weasel his way out of the question. By saying he doesn't engage in relationship hypotheticals, because he loves his girlfriend so much, and doesn't want to disrespect her.

Then he was exposed for engaging in a relationship hypocritical lol. In a clip someone ask if he would date a Conservative woman. And he ends up giving an answer with no hesitation. But when it comes to trans women, he can't give an answer though.

My point here is that, despite all the BS virtue singling. Many liberals aren't being honest about their true feelings on trans women. To point a popular male liberal streamer turns feels to uncomfortable to answer a question about dating trans women.

He feels uncomfortable for two reasons.

1: He doesn't want to pissed off his audience.

2: He also doesn't want to "come off as gay", because that would fuck up his dating pool with cis women.

we need to teach boys what consent looks like, not just tell them what it means

boys are not shown consent... they are told what consent is, and that's the problem.

first, there is right and there is wrong. rape is rape. i don't need to "show" my son not to murder or rape someone.

but in the grey areas, i think we have a structural problem caused by both men and women.

simple everyday example of showing what to expect for consent:

last season, i was at a basketball game with my son when a 9ish.. year-old boy next to me needed to change shirts. his mom told him to switch right there in the stadium so they could hurry up. no asking if he was comfortable. no consent. he was not comfortable.. and i noticed it. most girls would at least be asked if they were okay with it, even if they had an undershirt on.

dads do it too. a daughter asks her dad to stop tickling her, and he'll almost always stop. a son asks the same thing? maybe. maybe not.

those of us with sisters have lived the double standard in how much they're allowed to push or physically pester their brothers versus the other way around.

rinse and repeat this 10,000 times as boys grow up.

one of the biggest problems with consent is that we show girls what consent looks like, but tell boys what consent means. then we expect boys to grow up understanding all the nuances we've taught girls through experience.

lukewarm take You get 5 minutes to quiet your kids/pet at an event and if you can’t do that you need to leave the room until you can.

I was at a very beautiful wedding this last weekend that was interrupted by a 5 year old who would t stop crying and the parents did nothing about it.

This wasn’t your normal little cry. You would’ve thought this kid was being murdered.

I’m not mad that he cried. Kids do that. But the parents just sat there and DIDNT DO ANYTHING until someone came and told them to either leave or take him into another room until he could behave himself to which they finally left with no argument.

My thought process is simple. Kid starts crying? Your dog starts whining? You got 5 minutes to figure it out then you need to Take them to the next room and see what’s going on. It can be loud and can ruin the night for others.

It didn’t ruin the wedding I want to make that clear. But people talked about it after and it was definitely memorable.

casual hot take Women shouldn’t wait for men to propose. They should propose to their man.

I’m a woman. I proposed to my (now) husband.

I do not understand why some women spend so much time on tradition. Especially when they claim to be feminist. If you are a feminist, you see men and women as truly equal. There is no hierarchy, no gender roles, no polite society. If you are a feminist and you want to marry the man you are with, stop waiting.

Just ask him. You’ll either get a “yes, omg!” or a “no”. Either way, you can move on with the next chapter of your life.

I see so many women claiming a man “wasted” their life… but you wasted your own damn life girl. One question would have saved you any time you thought was wasted.

Woman up. Ask your man to marry you.

serious hot take I don’t get the age gap debate

How is it that an 18 year old can do porn, vote, adopt a child, take out a lone, go to the army to shoot peoples heads off to defend their country but they can’t logically decide to choose to date someone older than them without it being automatically assumed the older person is a predator, taking advantage or manipulating them. People act as if there is no accountability for 18 year olds but also don’t want to raise the age of consent to 25 where people say that’s the “full brain development”. If it’s such an issue, why don’t they want to raise the age of consent and take the ability away from 18 year olds to vote and do the other things.

I understand some people find it icky, but if you found watching gay sex icky because you are straight, is that a moral argument to interfere and condemn the act and shame two people who do it? Obviously not. So why are we doing it two two adults wether it’s a young male 18+ and older women or a young women 18+ and an older man.

Manipulation, coercion, power imbalance can exist im every relationship and experience, maturity or finding things in common isn’t a moral wrong. You could be 50 and immature and 20 with a lot of life experience for example.

So what is the moral issue?

casual hot take Being accused/charged of something doesn’t make u guilty of that crime

Well you may say:

“thats the most lukewarm take possible”

And I agree with u, however the moment I bring up somebody like Andrew Tate as an example then suddenly that no longer applies.

Andrew Tate is one example but there are so many cases of people being publicly tried and having their reputation slandered before the outcome of a trial.

Also he is being detained in prison so he can be extradited to the UK for tax evasion of 3 million dollars, which is obviously not great, but nowhere near the level of being mega grapist human trafficker that he was accused of being.

If he ends up being guilty of that I hope he rots under the jail, but until then I’m not gonna provide any criminal assessment of him.

Also I know the reason is because people don’t like them, but assessing guiltiness by your liking of someone is Nazi level logic.

serious hot take Adultery should be a felony

A marriage is a legal contract. It should also include that both genders are forbidden from seeing another person and any sex regardless of consent is not legit without the other spouse approval. In a marriage I don’t want my spouse to have a right to sleep with anyone else outside of me. Marriage means I’m the only rightful person who has a right to sleep with them. Adultery also destroys family and hurts kids involved. I think there comes a point where consent doesn’t matter when you signed a legal contract to stay faithful. In a marriage you don’t have a right to sleep with someone else outside of your spouse and if you can’t handle this then do get married. In an ideal world this also should apply outside of marriage to also include bf/gf

Nietzsche, would argue that the men who won’t shut up about body count have a slave’s mentality.

These men envy people who have access to sex and are secretly furious about their inability to attract a sexual partner. They turn to religion to make their shortcoming a virtue.

Rather than learning from the people they begrudge, they've used the slave mentality to make it a vice to be sexually attractive to the opposite sex; they’ve made it a vice to have access to sex. Instead of living in reality they’ve created a fantasy world where it is more virtuous to be a loser who can't get laid.

serious hot take If women say cold approaching is creepy it’s because you are most likely ugly

I’ve seen a lot of women on here say that cold approaching would never work because they’re scared of strangers and such, but I feel like most of them are lying. If you’re getting rejected when cold approaching, like me, it’s because of your appearance. I don’t approach anymore, but I used to, and I was never able to get a single number or date. Everyone said they had a boyfriend or weren’t interested, but I know for a fact it was because of my appearance. My cousin, who is an attractive dude, was cold approaching women and getting a bunch of numbers. So, if women say cold approaching is creepy to you, it’s most likely because you’re just unattractive. Let’s be real: most women would give Henry Cavill their number even if he were a complete stranger.

serious hot take Conspiracy Theories are Extremely Harmful to Individuals and Society.

Definitions:

Conspiracy- an agreement among one or more people to keep secret from and/or disseminate false information to another set of individuals in order to accomplish a perceived gain.

Conspiracy Theory- the belief that a conspiracy has occurred in which the lack of evidence itself and/or serves as proof of the conspiracy.

OR

the belief that a conspiracy has occurred in spite of significantly more plausible and evidentiary explanations.

Hot Take:

I believe that there is no such thing as a harmless conspiracy theory (ie sports conspiracy theory or celebrity conspiracy theory). All conspiracy theories teach poor critical thinking and an anti-intellectual epistemology.

Unfortunately, culture, especially TV shows and movies, teach us that these kinds of conspiracies (non-evidentiary) are everywhere and that the person who believes in them against all evidence and experts is correct and noble.

This is why people struggle to understand both large-scale events where there are commonly held conspiracy theories—such as Covid conspiracies—but also leads to people seeing everyday misunderstandings and miscommunications as attempts to deceive.

Please stop accepting the conspiratorial mindset. Formulate a better epistemology.
