Weekly "should I veto?/Is this collusion?" thread

This is a weekly thread where you can post trades that happened in your league and ask for advice.

REMEMBER: It is not your job to judge whether a trade was fair. It's your job to keep the league running. The only time you should reverse a trade is if:

A: it's clear collusion

B: It completely breaks the league

If you're unaware: Collusion in fantasy football is a secret agreement between two or more managers to cheat and gain an unfair advantage over the rest of the league. It’s impossible to tell if something is collusion based on the players involved in the trade.

Common Examples of Collusion

  • Lopsided Trades: Trading star players for bench warmers or making a one-sided trade where only one team benefits, often fueled by outside incentives like cash or favors.
  • Bench Sharing / Yo-Yo Trading: Trading players back and forth with another manager to cover bye weeks or specific matchups.
  • Intentional Dumping: Dropping elite players to the waiver wire so a specific friend with high waiver priority or FAAB can pick them up.
  • Tanking and Throwing Games: Intentionally benching active players or submitting a sub-optimal lineup to hand an opponent a free win.

League Question What’s your view on a league members trading a player who just got picked up on waivers?

Two league members: A and B

Mr. A picked up Pierce off waivers for $16 FAB

Mrs. B gets offered Pierce for $16 FAB in a trade

Does that sound right? Trading FAB in my league is allowed. But is it weird to trade a player straight up for FAB?

What’re your thoughts?

League Drama MFP/Standings Dynasty Draft League - How to Fix Tanking?

I have a 2nd-year Dynasty league with some guys I know, and a few I don't. Two of our managers are actively tanking. Team A is fielding his best players, even though they aren't very good. They're all starters or 2nd string at the minimum. Team B dropped most of his extra bench guys, and when I've asked teams to fill their bench spots, he starts picking up 5 guys on IR and two unknown 2nd-string fullbacks.

Max PF determines our draft order for the non-playoff teams, and playoff finishing order for the playoff teams. He clearly wants to get his PF down, which wouldn't be hard even if he fielded his best roster. (Just not that good. Is there a way I can prevent this? Should I even be trying to? I don't mind ethical tanking where managers sell off their higher-scoring players for draft picks, but this guy (Team B) looks like he's trying his best to score 5 points in the coming weeks.

For context, 12 Man Dynasty League PPR Non-SF, Non-TEP, Start 8.

Commissioner Issue Someone dropped Achane in dynasty. As commish, should I add them back or let it stand?

For context, this is the first year of the league and we are all new to dynasty but plenty of redraft experience.

Today, someone dropped Achane. They have a free IR spot and are not contending this year. I’ve reached out to see if it was an accident, but I’d like to address it (if needed) before waivers run tonight.

What do you think? Do I manually add him back to the roster or let it ride?

Edit: thanks all! After discussing with the league, we all agreed he gets a mulligan.

Commissioner Issue How did your league handle the 2022 Damar Hamlin situation on your trophy? Dispute

Hi everyone,

I'm the commissioner of a 10-team league that has been running for about 11 years, and I’m looking for some advice on a situation regarding our 2022-2023 season trophy engraving.

During the championship game on January 2, 2023, Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field. That game was the deciding match for our league title between myself and another manager. Given the severity of the situation at the time, two managers proposed that we engrave Damar Hamlin's name on the trophy instead of a winner's name. Not wanting to be insensitive, I agreed.

Ultimately, Yahoo officially awarded me the win for the season. When we got the trophy engraved, I had my name listed as champion based on that official Yahoo result.

Now, those two managers are bringing the issue up again and asking that I change the engraving to Damar Hamlin's name as previously agreed. The rest of the league hasn't expressed strong feelings either way.

I'm leaning toward explaining my reasoning to the league and putting it to a vote to abide by the majority decision, but I'd appreciate hearing how other commissioners might handle this:

1.  Did anyone else decide to put Damar Hamlin's name on their league trophy?
2.  How would you recommend proceeding? Should I honor the original agreement, keep my name as the official champion, or put it to a league vote?

Thanks in advance for your input!

Ethics question So I guess waivers still work with questionable guys in your IR (ESPN)

Every time before waivers transact I make sure to cleanse my IR slot and move guys out of there who aren’t actually out.

Meanwhile this guy in my league made about 5 waiver makes with Devonta in his IR. He’s been questionable since yesterday because I happened to notice this.

Safe to assume you don’t have to clear your IR before waivers on ESPN?

Ethics question TrophySmack Team Names - Any issues?

We are going to get our league trophy from TrophySmack for Year 1 of our league. A few of the better teams (not me, 2-3) have some pretty questionable team names. I'm wondering if that could become an issue when ordering the championship plaque if one of those teams wins. Has anyone had TrophySmack reject a plaque because of a team name being considered inappropriate?

Commissioner Issue League manager shows no effort in fixing his lineups

I have a guy that started this year in our second year league . At the beginning he seemed very interested and now shows no effort at all . He is currently 0-5 and his lineups always have injure players or out players, it comes to a point were now is like everyone feels is an easy win when playing against him . Even last year or last team was tie with like 3 others . How do you guys approach this or just let it be and keep taking his money ?

Ethics question How to handle excessive trades

So there are trades going crazy in my league. 2 teams tanking already. 1 guy going all in.

If any picks are traded for the next year I enforce a rule or submitting payment for next league year. Which had been done.

But now it’s getting abusive. 8 picks gone. 1-8 rounds. No one likes it, people are getting mad. He’s got the best team you will ever see. Not sure what rule I need to incorporate to stop this before it gets worse and he has 0 picks.

Anyone else have any tips?

Commissioner Issue How to prevent tanking with a consolation bracket?

I am not a fan of the consolation bracket concept for our league. You guys have any other ideas that might work? Obviously I am not going to change any rules until this draft is over

League Drama Is the process of removing points off a team on Sleeper smooth? League mate is avoiding punishment.

EDIT: Case closed. I’m not asking for advice on how to run my league, just wanted to know about the setting, if you’re trying to be a commish for another one’s league please save yourself the hassle to comment. Thanks, good night. Everyone has their own rules, again, not looking for advice.

Ethics question Manager can't set lineup due to hurricane.

One of the managers in my league cant set his lineup due to the hurricane. He can text but cant call or receive pictures. I know i can manually set his lineup but not sure what he wants. I am in 2 leagues with him. 1 is a chopped league the other is a regular league against me. What is the fairest way to handle it?

League Question A league mate tank question for a 12 man dynasty league

First off I’d like to say I know tanking will happen but I have a question about a particular league mate.

He only had 3 RBs on his roster. Achane, Cook, and Isiah Davis.

Once Achane went down he traded me cook for my first (top 3/4 pick) and Wright. So now his only RBs are Wright and Isiah Davis. His record is 2-2 but he has the number 2 pick based off of Reverse order of Max point for. He basically will have one RB slot that will be getting 0 points for the rest of the year.

I knew this would probably happen eventually after we switched to reverse order of max point for.

Any advice would be great. Thanks!

Edit: I got a great suggestion which I’m going to implement next season. thank you all for the good advice

50Bullseye
“Can’t do it mid season, but going forward, implement penalties for taking zeroes in max potential points. (20 for QB/SF, 15 for RB/WR/FL, 10 for TE/K/D).

Eliminates any and all subjectivity and forces guys to at least have full rosters or guys who at least have a shot at scoring.”

League Question Manager dropped Saquon for Woody Marks

I commission a free all-women’s league and this is only my 2nd year as a commissioner. An 0-4 team just dropped Saquon for Woody Marks. When I messaged her asking if she meant to do that she confirmed yes. I asked why and explained that dropping someone like Saquon can have a big impact on the league. She said she dropped him because he’s always hurt and even when he does play it hasn’t been great.

What should I do? Do I reverse it against her will? Obviously a player like Saquon should not be available on waivers. Some advice would be awesome!

Update: thanks to everyone who commented and gave advice! I decided to let the move stand.

Commissioner Issue 8-team keeper league commish, 4-0, accused of collecting all the stars. Am I the problem or are our rules?

8 teams, PPR, $50/yr, 3rd season on Sleeper. Starting lineup: 2 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 2 FLEX (RB/WR/TE), K, DEF.

I'm the commish and a team owner. The league includes family and close friends of mine. I want honest feedback, including if the problem is me.

Keeper rules

Keep up to 5. A player can be kept twice max (3 years total).

The clock starts the first year you keep him. Trading a player resets his clock.

Keepers cost picks from Rd 1 down. Picks in Rds 1 to 5 can't be traded. Picks Rd 6+ can be traded up to 3 years out (you pay that year's dues at trade time).

Keeper eligibility for every player is tracked in a sheet that's pinned in league chat and reposted before every keeper deadline.

Trade rules

No vetoes except clear collusion.

A 24-hour hold for counteroffers was proposed and voted down. The argument was that if you're not active, that's on you.

I've been processing trades right away, including my own.

Trading closes mid-season and reopens in the offseason after dues are paid, before keepers lock. So expiring keepers can be traded and get a fresh clock on the new team.

What set it off

I texted another manager (3-1 at the time) and offered Drake London + George Pickens for Jaxon Smith-Njigba. She accepted, partly because she thought she couldn't keep him again. She actually had one keep left, which neither of us realized at the time. The trade reset his clock, so I can keep him 2 more years. Two of my current keepers (Gibbs and Nico Collins) expire after this season.

A leaguemate then posted in league chat that it feels like people keep trading the best players in the league to me, that he wants more competitive balance for the money, and that his own trade offers sit unanswered for days. He asked if people talk behind the scenes to get deals done, said it was weird for a 3-1 team to trade JSN, and said if JSN was keeper-limited he should have been put on the block for everyone to bid on.

Another manager replied that he agreed, saying the best WR in the league got traded for mid WRs.

Context

I'm 4-0 with the most points in the league. The complaining manager is 2-2. The manager who agreed is in last place.

The manager who agreed made a similar consolidation trade with me 3 days earlier: he gave me London, Christian Watson and Parker Washington for Saquon Barkley + Justin Jefferson, both currently injured. I then flipped London + Pickens for JSN the next day.

That same manager earlier offered me Lamar Jackson, Saquon Barkley and George Pickens for Josh Allen. I thought that was too lopsided in my favor, so I added Parker Washington and Jeremiyah Love on my side.

62 trades over 3 seasons: I'm in 30, the most active manager is in 32, others have 22, 20 and 13. Three managers have 4 or fewer trades total.

The complaining manager is also active in the offseason window. Before keepers locked this year, he traded for a player and kept him.

Three managers mostly respond by text, not Sleeper, and I'm the main person with their numbers, so I can reach them faster than others. A group chat isn't an option for privacy reasons.

Three managers don't vote on rule proposals.

Another manager says 5 keepers is too many for 8 teams, thinks 2 would be better, and says he might not come back.

What I'm planning to propose

Keeper clock follows the player and doesn't reset on trade

Trades process automatically, without me approving them

If an offer sits unanswered for 24 hours, the manager tells me and I text the other person to check Sleeper

Rule votes decided by majority of votes cast within 72 hours

Questions

Do those changes address the real problem, or am I missing something?

Are 5 keepers too many for 8 teams?

Should we bring back a 24-hour hold, where accepted trades wait a day so others can make counteroffers? Maybe only for trades involving keeper-eligible players?

How do you handle managers who barely respond?

Anything I should do differently as a commish who's also competing?

I want to keep everyone and keep it fair. Roast away.

Edit: Privacy concerns are because one manager is a former pro athlete and doesn't want his information to get out. My father in law is in this league and is the only person with his phone number.

Miscellaneous How does “Play game against second opponent” work on Yahoo fantasy? Any other fantasy apps that allow that?

Now I can’t remember what fantasy app they used to do this, but I read somewhere that a user set up his league to where specific weeks each team plays 1 game against 2 different opponents a “double header”. That really Intrigued me as that’s possibly something I want to implement into my league next year.

On yahoo, I still have the option to turn “play game against a second opponent” on but hypothetically if I turn it on for this week, can I turn it back off and then turn it back on if I want to use it again? Does turning it on and off keep the recorded game W-L records?

Is there any other fantasy apps that allow this kind of thing because this really interests me. I think someone said Fantrax? I’m not sure.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated

Edit: I’m aware of the median scoring as I currently run that In my league. I’m strictly jsut curious about specifically playing a second opponent

Ethics question Is my commissioner colluding by privately interfering with a trade to prevent me from acquiring Ja'Marr Chase?

I'm in a fantasy football league, and I believe our commissioner crossed the line from normal gamesmanship into collusion or, at minimum, deliberate trade manipulation.

Here's what happened:

I was negotiating a trade with another manager (Jared) involving my Puka Nacua for his Ja'Marr Chase.

Our commissioner (Tanner) found out I was close to acquiring Chase and decided to privately message Jared to discourage him from making the trade.

His argument was that Puka has a "pre-hernia" and is therefore a significant injury risk.

Here's my issue:

  1. The commissioner deliberately inserted himself into a trade he wasn't involved in.

This wasn't a public discussion about player values or someone asking for trade advice. Tanner knew I was negotiating for Chase and independently contacted the other manager to undermine the deal.

  1. He used speculative medical information to manipulate another manager's perception of my player.

"Pre-hernia" isn't a formal medical diagnosis. While Puka may have legitimate injury concerns, presenting an ambiguous condition as a reason to avoid trading for him exaggerates what we actually know.

  1. His actions were intended to influence a transaction for his own competitive benefit.

We're all competing against each other. Preventing another team from acquiring an elite receiver like Chase potentially benefits every other manager, including Tanner.

If commissioners can privately interfere whenever a rival is about to improve their roster, what's stopping them from sabotaging every trade they dislike?

  1. Collusion doesn't necessarily have to involve an obviously lopsided trade.

My argument is that coordinating behind the scenes to manipulate another manager's decision and interfere with a transaction can also undermine fair competition.

The commissioner is supposed to enforce league rules impartially, not use his position to influence which managers are allowed to improve their teams.

  1. This creates a terrible precedent.

If this behavior is acceptable, every manager can start privately contacting trade partners to spread negative information about players whenever they don't like a proposed deal.

At that point, trades become less about negotiations between two managers and more about who can interfere the most.

My question for Reddit:

Would you consider this collusion, commissioner misconduct, or just fair gamesmanship?

To me, there's a massive difference between giving an honest opinion when someone asks and deliberately contacting a manager behind another manager's back because you want to prevent a specific trade from happening.

Even if it doesn't meet the strict definition of collusion, I think it's a clear violation of the spirit of fair competition.

Am I wrong?

Miscellaneous Do y'all send your league weekly power rankings or recaps?

I'm the commissioner for a few sleeper leagues. We used to make the lowest scorer write weekly power rankings, but it fell off. A lot of people got tired of having to write 12 paragraphs when it was them, and it's usually the same team stuck with it for many of the weeks. I tried to take it over for a while and I just got tired of it too. So this year I started building a tool to write them, ideally good enough that I only make light edits. Before I go further, I'd like to hear from other commissioners:

  • Do you send your league anything weekly? Rankings, recaps, awards?
  • If you write it yourself, how long does it take, and does anyone read it?
  • Have you used a tool or site for it? What did you like, and what made you stop?
  • Would you pay for something like that, or is it only worth it if it's free?

Not linking anything, just want honest input.

League Drama Brian Robinson v. Bijan Robinson Trade confusion - Dynasty

The following trade went through this morning in a dynasty league that I am the commissioner for:

Side 1 receives: Jaylen Waddle, future 2nd round pick
Side 2 receives: Brian Robinson, future 3rd round pick

Side 2 is now claiming that they thought they were receiving Bijan Robinson and wants me to reverse the trade. On the one hand, the trade would make absolutely no sense if it was Bijan, instead of Brian. On the other hand, it’s a huge overpay for Brian Robinson. Personally, I believe Side 1 made a mistake, but trying to decide if that mistake should lead to the trade getting overturned.
