Dev Diary (mod) Flag Foundry now supports Europa Universalis V

Flag Foundry started with something pretty small.

While playing Victoria 3, I realised that changing some of the flags I wanted to modify meant digging into the game files and understanding how patterns, emblems, layers, positions and subcompositions worked.

It wasn’t impossible, but it wasn’t particularly accessible either if you simply wanted to change a flag without first learning the entire internal structure of the system.

So I started building a visual tool to make that process easier.

Over time, Flag Foundry grew quite a bit. It went from being a way to modify existing flags into something closer to a small flag studio, where you can move, scale and rotate elements directly on the canvas, work with multiple layers, group them, add custom images, create variants and export them as a mod.

And while I kept developing it, I started looking into how Europa Universalis V handles flags and coats of arms.

That was when adapting it started to make a lot of sense.

EU5 does not simply use flat image files. It uses patterns, emblems, compositions, variants, dynasties, inherited colours and quite a bit of internal logic, so it shares many of the same ideas as the system I was already working with for Victoria 3.

So with version 0.50, Flag Foundry now includes Europa Universalis V support for the first time.

You can now choose between Victoria 3 and EU5 when opening the tool. On the EU5 side, you can already browse national coats of arms, dynasties, patterns and emblems, explore national families and their variants, check the conditions defined by the game, browse related dynasties, and preview or edit dynastic coats of arms.

The editor also lets you move, scale and rotate elements directly on the canvas, use proportional or free scaling, select multiple layers, group them, and add several custom images to the same composition.

That said, EU5 support has only just been added.

It is very likely that there are still quite a few things I will need to add, adapt or change as I understand better how the game uses all of these systems.

I also have significantly fewer hours played in EU5 than in Victoria 3, so I’m sure more experienced EU5 players will come across situations, conventions or edge cases that I simply haven’t encountered yet.

That is one of the main reasons I’m especially interested in feedback for this first version. If you find coats of arms that do not render correctly, variants that Flag Foundry interprets incorrectly, strange behaviour, or things that you think should work differently, please let me know.

I’d also really love to see what people create with it. Historical variants, dynastic changes, alternate states, strange political experiments or absolute heraldic abominations. That is still probably the most fun part of the whole project.

How does Flag Foundry work?

Flag Foundry does not come with a copy of Europa Universalis V’s assets. Instead, it reads the flags, coats of arms, patterns, emblems and dynasties directly from your own local EU5 installation.

When you connect the game for the first time, your browser will ask you to select the EU5 game folder and grant Flag Foundry permission to read it. Once connected, the tool builds its libraries from those files and lets you browse, preview and edit them visually.

Nothing is uploaded to a server. The game files remain on your computer and Flag Foundry only reads them locally through the browser.

How to try it

  1. Open Flag Foundry in Chrome or Edge.
  2. Select Europa Universalis V on the game selection screen.
  3. Click Connect Europa Universalis V.
  4. Select the game folder from your EU5 installation and grant the browser access.
  5. Flag Foundry will load the available coats of arms, dynasties, patterns and emblems from your local game files.
  6. Choose a coat of arms, edit it visually and export your work when you are finished.

Flag Foundry does not modify the original Europa Universalis V files.

I always like to be transparent that Flag Foundry has been built with the help of AI. I’m not a full-time developer, and this is mostly a fun personal project for me.

Hello everyone! Today we've published a slightly late, Tinto Talk 128, you can find that here:

But beyond that, we also wanted to present you with something new for Europa Universalis V that we’ve been working on. A new video Two Centuries That Made Spain: The History Behind EU5's Across the Pillars.

https://youtu.be/bm3gMRmOwQU

This is a project in which we collaborated with our very own lead Content Designer's Alma Mater, the University of Valladolid, to bring closer to the players the real History behind Across the Pillars, and how we have been working to represent it in the DLC. We hope that you enjoy it! Let us know below if you'd like to see more historical content like this in the future.

R5 cannot stabilise my economy as England. I was going great guns, then lost the HYW. Then I had to fight off a civil war. I’ve sold off lots of artwork to pay off my poxy loans. I’ve killed off most of my castles, I haven’t got that many unprofitable buildings. Most things are set to auto whilst I am learning. But I now see another uprising in Ireland on the way..

Discussion Does Anyone Else Switch to Individualism in the Late Game?

I'm convinced Individualism is much stronger than Communalism in the late game, mainly because of its massive increase in migration within your own market, rather than migration to colonies.

This is extremely powerful for creating megalopolises and making culture conversion easier.

My strategy is to combine Expel Population + Encourage Migration to move pops from heavily populated provinces to my market capital, which I'm developing into a megalopolis. At the same time, reducing the population of other provinces makes them much easier to culture-convert.

I typically switch to Individualism during the Age of Reformation, once most of the values I need are close to 100. This lets me start building multiple megalopolises while accelerating culture conversion in provinces that would otherwise take ages.

The best part is that these actions complement each other: you reduce the population of provinces you want to culture-convert while moving those pops to your market capital, helping it grow into a megalopolis. You're essentially achieving multiple goals at once.

I'm not sure whether Individualism also improves the characters you get, but its migration bonuses alone make it extremely appealing in the late game.

How do you guys use Individualism? Do you also switch to it in the late game, or do you prefer sticking with Communalism throughout your campaign?

Inspired by the recent post and decided to try out Ibadi Tlemcen -> Morocco -> Carthage in 200 yrs. The start is pretty strong with lots of hidden buffs throughout the campaign. If min-maxed appropriately I believe north africa including mamluks can be united by 1400.

The egypt tag would be a excellent tier III formable in between but does not seem to give the mamluk advances. Anybody knows if that changes if the mamluks are gone? Do you become the MAM tag if the mamluks are gone when you switch to Egypt?

Workshop: EU5 Globe

Then I will create Interactive positions at the North and South Poles, so the poles are no longer just a visual feature but can be selected and interacted with. And an alternative zoomed-out scene: the spherical Earth sits on a tabletop, giving it the look and feel of a classic desk globe.

Discussion Can we stop random HRE members joining the Emperors offensive wars?

I find it a bit silly that the entire HRE will ride to war with ultra Bohemia against anyone and everyone. Peacing them out doesn't even matter either because they'll rejoin next month somehow. For a defensive war, that would make more sense maybe, but I don't think it should be happening when the Emperor declares an offensive war.

3 times in my recent Russia game, mega Bohemia declares on me to stop me annexing a random Siberian subject and the entire HRE will join and death war against me. It doesn't take long for the smaller guys to be willing to accept a white peace, but most of the time they immediately rejoin next month. I just found it very tedious to fight and to peace out the dozens of little guys over and over.

If the whole HRE can join these wars, then they at least shouldn't be able to rejoin immediately.

Is this working as intended? Is there a legitimate reason for this that I'm perhaps too annoyed to see at the moment?

Question EU4 to EU5

Hello all. I have lurked here for many months to see what’s up with this game. I’ve played EU4 since high school so little under 10 years.

I am very comfortable with EU4 yet I’ve wanted to try EU5 out for a while. Is this game worth the price? Is EU5 better than 4? Is there a healthy mod community? I understand these are different games but how different is really what I’m interested in.

A while ago I saw a post on here saying the game was fun but not fully developed or thought out yet. This prevented me from buying the game at the time. So I want to hear people’s thoughts before I purchase this and dive into for the next 10 years.

Advice Wanted Completely lost on economy

I played as Holland since it was a recommended economy country.

I read the starting advice, built some marketplaces, got some income going. Always made sure to build the highest profit margin buildings.

All the while my income slowly goes down each month. I constantly get “unprofitable building” alerts. I try downgrading the buildings but that only ticks down my income.

England declared on me, and I thought that gave me a good way out because I had Bohemia and Austria on my side. We curb stomped england and I fleeced them good, took flanders and a bunch of money. Thought I had it made.

Then everything just got worse and worse, and my income just kind of entered a death spiral with a balance of -16 every month by 1384, then the hooks and cods started, my legitimacy is now at -.40, and I don’t really know where to go from here.

It’s the third playthrough as Holland where my income has abruptly entered freefall, and I’m hoping someone can explain this to me, because it seems like building things to boost my income actually decreases income…. But I’m sure there has to be -some- way to build an economy, but after sifting through the menus I haven’t been able to find any phantom secret expenses tanking my income, so I thought I should just put out a call for help.

Please and thank you.

Question Does Individualism actually provide 'exceptional' characters?

The description for individual states that a country with individualism may get more exceptional characters, yet the value buffs only provide morale and migration speed. Is the description inaccurate? Perhaps there is a hidden buff to hired generals/characters stats? Or maybe higher likelihood of events that give you good characters? I just really want to know, because if not, the value seems pretty underwhelming to me.

Beta [Bug] Colonial nations still declare suicidal wars on native nations

Colonial nations keep declaring wars on local native nations they cannot win against. Please fix the war declaration logic.

A colonial nation should declare war on a native nation only if: It is genuinely stronger on its own, or the overlord can actually help in practice. EDIT1: Troops and navies nearby.

Having more levies and professional armies than the native nation is not enough for the overlord to count as help. Neither is having enough transport ships: ships making long ocean crossings can be lost at sea.

A colonial nation should only declare war when it is in a position of clear advantage. It cannot count on turning the war around just because the overlord might come to help.

I've never used the console, since I want to earn Steam achievements and I can resolve successfully the conflict with white peaces or better results, but this is really hard to manage, especially for new players.

Question Best way to improve control as Naples?

What's the approach to propagating proximity as Naples? I'm a new player and I'm thinking using naval for maritime patrol because the land is so hilly and mountainous but also most of the ports to reenter have very poor harbour capacity so I'm not sure. What do people generally do? I want to play tall as Naples so won't do much expanding besides Sicily and maybe papal states so I can untie all the lands in my market. Where do tall Naples players put their local governers?
