On CT bear hunt, Lamont and Fazio find common ground
When it comes to Connecticut’s increasingly troublesome relationship with black bears, both candidates in this year’s governor’s race are in agreement on a somewhat controversial solution.
Gov. Ned Lamont, the Democratic incumbent, and his opponent, Republican Sen. Ryan Fazio, have both supported measures in recent years to allow the hunting of black bears. Those efforts have been repeatedly defeated by opponents of hunting who argue that non-lethal means can be effective at reducing conflicts with people.
Connecticut is home to between 1,000 and 1,200 black bears, with the population concentrated largely in the state’s northwest corner. Encounters with people — including home break-ins and attacks on livestock — have risen in recent years, according to wildlife officials.
However, Connecticut is one of only two states in the Northeast that does not allow bear hunting. The other, Rhode Island, has fewer than a dozen bears.
“The governor supports a limited and carefully regulated bear hunt because Connecticut’s bear population is continuing to grow and we’re seeing more and more conflicts between bears and people every year,” Lamont campaign spokesperson Lauren Gray said in a statement.

CT Republicans are so ashamed to be Republicans that they “forget” to mention it in their ads
yes, ofc she is a GOP candidate. Also maybe someone could ask her why groceries and home heating oil are so expensive.

walkable town with stuff to do
Looking for a cutie patootie town for my sister and me to bounce around, shop, and eat good food. We are located in the greater New Haven area, but willing to drive up to 1.5 hours! We like towns that have fun little shops, bookstores, cafes, and anything else cute! looking for Chester-vibes
Currently looking at: Ridgefield, Middletown, Old Wethersfield, New Milford, Kent, Litchfield.
Definitely not going to: Chester (been a bunch! love it, want something similar), Mystic, Essex

Complete beginner needing winter tires for my 2024 Elantra in CT (hills/ice) — what should I actually get?
Hey everyone, I know pretty much nothing about winter tires and I just need straightforward advice so I don't get stuck trying to get to work this winter.
I drive a 2024 Hyundai Elantra Limited (front wheel drive / 2WD). I live in a hilly, semi-rural part of western CT on a steep dead-end road that plows barely touch until hours later, so by the time I have to leave, it's usually packed snow and pure slick ice. Once I make it off my street, I stick to main routes that still have decent hills.
Price isn't a huge issue because reliability is my number one priority, but I still want a good deal if there is one (just please no store credit card sign-up nonsense).
A few questions:
1. Can an Elantra even run studded tires? Given that my street stays unplowed ice, should I wait until November 15 for studs, or are regular studless winter tires (like Blizzaks or Michelin X-Ice) plenty to claw a 2WD sedan up an icy hill?
2. Will a 2WD Elantra actually get around reliably in winter with good snow tires, or am I still going to slide?
3. What specific tire brand should I buy, and does anyone know where the best deals or rebates are locally right now?
Please keep it simple, I just want to know what to buy and where to go. Thanks!

Ask Connecticut Anyone know where I can get Swedish Princess Cake in NL county?
I live in the New London County area, but IKEA/Trader Joes which are the only options I know of that could have Swedish Princess Cake are 1 hour + from me.
Anyone know a bakery or place I can get it from in the New London County area?
(Not to be confused with a princess themed cake, I mean actual Swedish Princess Cake. See picture!)
Thanks in advance!

Politics Keeping Farmland Farmed: What are the Challenges and What We Can Do About It
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Posting on behalf of James Mol for House District 61 (East Granby, Suffield, and Windsor Locks)
Farmland preservation isn't about keeping the view (even if the view in our town this week is hard to beat). It's about keeping farmland farmed, and that only works if farming pays and young farmers can afford to get onto the land.
Thank you to Congressman Joe Courtney for visiting the farm to talk about it. Our full conversation, and my plan for farming, are at jamesmol.com/policy/farming. I hope you'll have a look.

Ask Connecticut Personal injury lawyer after car crash? Are the billboard people clowns?
My friend was rear ended recently, the police said he was not at fault , but the person who was may have been having medical issues. My friend is now having physical symptoms. He has yet to contact a lawyer and is not sure what the next step would be. He's afraid that the billboard lawyers we all love to rag on are scams or overpriced or something. I don't know for a fact that's true, but that would be my suspicion as well.. I'm not sure if it's acceptable to recommend lawyers in this sub. If it is, I'd like some recommendations, and if it's not, I'd just like some direction.
I'm the same way, if I don't know what my clear next step is , I get mental paralysis and delay. It can be a real problem. Since it's not my personal problem and i'm not that stressed about it it occurred to me to ask here.

uhart or uconn
hello! im international student both got accepted to uconn (bio) and uhart (nursing) (tho ik uhart has 96% passing).
which one is worth it?
uconn storrs - originally applied for nursing but got deferred to bio + 10k yearly scholarship
uhart - nursing + 31k yearly scholarship
for context i want to work on medical field immediately (which is why i decided to apply for nursing) and later on work on becoming a doctor.
ps. i kinda want to risk going to uconn and later on apply for changing major to nursing but i heard it was super competitive and im scared to risk it. also i heard so many bad things about uhart but i kinda dont want to let go the 31k scholarship + secured major of nursing (is there any scamming or fooling happening here?)
let me hear your thoughts. thank you!

CT left lane law being enforced????
I was on 91 North around 11 this morning (around exit 20-21) and wow what a surprise I saw! Saw a state trooper fly across 3 lanes of traffic and pulled over someone in the left lane!!! The car in that lane passed me and never moved back over despite having room. I have never seen that happen in my 7 years of driving so I was legit so shocked. Perhaps this is the start of CSP enforcing it?!

What's with the Huge Increase in Mobile Dent Repair Vehicles?
Fairfield County / New Haven County
Vehicles driving around and offering on-the-spot dent repairs has been a thing for a while, but it used to be an uncommon sighting.
In the past two months or so, they're suddenly everywhere. Every other parking lot, you see one of them slowly cruising around, looking for vehicles with body damage so they can try to solicit the owner. They'll try to get people's attention at stoplights and stop signs, honking and waving to get people to roll down their window and hear the sales pitch.
What happened recently that made so many people decide to get into this business? It went from being something that was barely a thing to something that is prominent.
I'm already really tired of these people. At least once or twice a week, I have someone approach me in a parking lot or yell to me through an open window about fixing a dent in one of my fenders. And of course they have the nerve to get mad at you if you tell them to piss off, because how dare anyone take issue with them going around and bothering people all day?
