Advice Wanted Anyone else unemployed?

• Upvotes

I’m a college freshman and I’m currently unemployed. I don’t really need money right now, I have some money set aside and my family is super supportive. I’m dealing with mental health stuff and school and I just don’t really need a job right now. Some distant family keeps telling me I need to get one though. It’s not like I have no job experience, I worked throughout high school even during summers and stuff, I just don’t need one now

Advice Wanted A few girls want to pick me on me

Just for the record, everyone: I was bullied in high school and had people exclude me in group activities and in PE.
It was seriously the worst time I had in my life. Knowing I couldn’t make friends with the people in my class and be the laughing joke of everyone behind my back.

So, fast forward, I am not 16 anymore. I am 22 and in college. These girls like to call my name and I have no idea why. Do they want to pick on me? And then they ask me dumb questions that I get like: how can that be?

Before yesterday, we were on a trip with school at a hostel. And I went to put on my shoes at the hall and these girls came as well. Suddenly they were calling my name again, and this time I lost patience and composure.

“Can you stop calling my name for a second?”

“But we aren’t, we just want to talk to you”

“I don’t know if you guys realize, but this is not high school anymore. I heard you guys were trash talking me. I do not care but this is college, okay? So act mature.”

And then one of these girls got mad and started talking aggressively. I just ignored it and went back to the class.

Today I chose to skip classes as I was tired and the lesson was not that important. I knew I could do my school work at home on my PC with no problem. Then comes one of these girls on the group chat of the school:

“Oh (name), you didn’t go to school?”

My response:

“None of your business.”

And now many people saw my answer and were putting reactions to it (WhatsApp).

Honestly, I don’t wanna be bullied anymore. I just want to be and act normal towards people but these group of girls seem they didn’t grow up, although they’re like 19-21.

Any advice, guys?

Advice Wanted struggling with attendance

im in my first year, im technically an adult learner (22) but don't feel like it. ive always struggled with anxiety and depression but it had gotten a lot better this past year with the new medication im on. when school started up, i was organized, on time, and happy. then, I slowly started skipping classes. at first because I was sick, then I realized how easy it was to work from home, and eventually I started missing at least 1-2 classes per week.

i am terrified of how this will affect my performance as well as how it might harm my relationships with my profs. i do good, i get good grades, but that doesn't replace attendance and i know it. i am also well aware that my profs all have very similar attendance policies, where missing 4 or more classes in one subject can lead to or simply equate to being dismissed from the class. I have absolutely missed more than 4 in each class, but no one has said anything yet. I don't know if it's because the policy was just to sway people into attending, or if I'm doing well so they figure it doesn't matter much, or something else entirely.

the longer i stay away, the harder it is to go back. I'm going today whether I like it or not, but the guilt is eating me alive. i don't even know why I'm posting this im just losing my sht tbh

Discussion I graduated today, and instead of feeling happy, I feel sad about leaving my university life behind. Did anyone else feel this way?

Today at 9:30 AM, I officially graduated with my Honours BA in Psychology. The convocation ceremony was good, and I’m proud of myself for finishing my degree in three years instead of the usual four. However, now that everything is over, I’ve been feeling unexpectedly sad, lonely, and a little depressed.

I think what hurts the most is realizing that my university life is officially over. I’m going to miss the student life, the freedom, the experiences, and just knowing that I was still in that chapter of my life. I know I can make new memories, but I also know that I can never go back and experience those years the same way again.

What’s strange is that I wasn’t even this sad on my last day of university, when I finished my exams. But today, after convocation, it finally hit me that I’m actually done. I’m not going back next semester. I’m no longer a university student. That chapter of my life is closed, and I think I’m only starting to process it now.

Part of me wonders if I should have taken the full four years instead of finishing in three. I don’t regret graduating early because I know it has its advantages, and regretting it now won’t change anything. Still, I sometimes wonder if I missed out on a year of experiences that I can never get back.

I already have plans for my future, so it’s not like I have nothing to look forward to. I know I need to find a job, start making money, build a career, eventually get married and have a family, and hopefully make my parents proud. Those are all things I want in life. But right now, the thought of moving on from university and entering adulthood feels a little overwhelming. Iguess I’m just missing the old days. It feels like life is moving forward whether I’m ready or not, and I’m not sure how to feel about it.

For those of you who have already graduated, did you feel this way after your convocation? Did it take you some time to adjust to life after university? And for those who graduated early, did you ever wish you had stayed a little longer?

I’d really like to hear your experiences because right now, I’m feeling a little nostalgic about a chapter of my life that I didn’t realize I would miss this much.

Advice Wanted College anxiety, introvert ,shy . How to survive

I'm a shy and introverted guy who has always struggled with socialising, but lately, it's been getting worse. I want friends and meaningful connections, but I'm scared of being judged or rejected. Whenever I'm around people, I often feel like an outsider, struggle to express myself, and just want to go home.

College has become emotionally exhausting for me. I don't feel comfortable there, and I often feel anxious, disconnected, and desperate to be back home. Even after coming home, I keep replaying conversations and overthinking what people might think of me. I feel low, anxious, and mentally drained even when I'm alone.

I don't know whether this is social anxiety, low self-confidence, or something else. I don't want to remain isolated, but I also don't know how to get out of this cycle.

Has anyone experienced something similar? How did you cope with college anxiety, shyness, and feeling like you don't belong anywhere? I'd really appreciate genuine advice.

Advice Wanted McGraw-Hill Exams/Quizzes are impossible to pass

I am currently enrolled in a science course where our teacher assigns all of the tests and quizzes through McGraw-Hill. However, I believe there is a disconnect between his lectures and the questions generated by the program. I can study a chapter for 2-3 hours a day and get a D on a quiz. What makes it frustrating is that I'm sure my whole class is cheating (a student admitted that they turn off their camera when completing the proctored quizzes). When I look at the averages in the class, I typically have the lowest grade out of everyone. I have other classes where you can actually study (even though it may be hard) and pass the class with an A. I think the problem is that McGraw-Hill doesn't focus on the main topics of the subject rather it expects us to know obscure details from the text. I miss having professors who actually wrote their own tests and were able to use their lectures to prepare us for them.

Advice Wanted College has made me feel worthless

I am in my first ever semester of college. I have worked so hard yet I have an F in math. It has always been very hard for me, but I go to the tutors for hours every chance I get. My grade in biology was just lowered to a B, and we have a lab exam soon. Lab is very confusing for me and it’s worth a lot, like almost all of our grade. I want to get into a medical program in the future, I want to do something medical because I had medical problems as a child and I want to bring the same comfort to people they brought to me, but I’m worried I’ve already ruined it for myself. Every grade I get that is not to my liking it makes me feel so bad about myself. I used to love painting and art, now I have no time to do it. Everyday I feel so stupid. Is this all there is to life?

No advice wanted (Vent) college ranting instead of studying

I'm currently enrolled in my second year at college and I'm really starting to hate the major I chose. But I'm not particularly good at anything nor exceed in any one class. I feel like I'm too deep into getting this degree to change it without having to take summer class or do more semesters. It probably a me thing due to the fact I hate studying, find the material in class boring the can't take notes of the leacher's' in class. I'm just really hating all the math and sciences i have to do, cuss I stuck at it like really reallly bad, It getting too overwhelming. But it doesn't help that I hate almost everything else offered and the majors i have some interest in have almost not job opportunities.

Idk im just mad and upset at myself and can't study of any of these classes.

I talked to my adviser about this, but again I have no any idea what I would change my major too. I don't want the classes I'm talking now to end up going to waste and I don't want to hear "you just need to try harder". I'm a straight B-C student at best, so Idk how i even got this far tbh.

I could go to office hours, but it not that I don't understand what there saying in class, looking over there notes I get it. It's just that I can't act on it. I can learn and function or formula but when asked to use it, I'm gone. even worse when they have you use multiple function in the same question and the only thing you got to off is a word problem.

Everyday I go to class and everyday I think I should change my major this shit too hard for me. I feel like I might just flunk this semester and change my major the next semester.

Advice Wanted This feeling is so weird. [RANT/NEED ADVICE]

I feel lonely.

Some nights, when my friends aren't streaming or I'm not in a call with my friends (who are mainly online friends) I get this strange ping of loneliness. The room feels heavy. And I just break down crying. I'm alone in the dorm room. I started applying for jobs around campus, most have rejected me, but I might be getting a job for the spring semester, which I am excited for. I really hope I got it. But that's besides the point. I only go outside during the nighttime just to get some fresh air or take my garbage out, and of course to eat and go to classes. I joined some clubs but they also have a discord server so all updates go there too. Okay no more backstory. Time to explain what I feel.

Sometimes I feel like I want to cry because I miss home, sometimes I feel enclosed in my own dorm. The atmosphere gets heavy and I feel like I am collapsing under that atmosphere. And then I officially break down mentally.

Can someone please tell me what I can do about this? What even is this? I'm open to any criticisms and advice.

Thank you for taking the time to hear me out.

Advice Wanted Lonely

I’m a freshman and am having a really hard time making friends as it seems everyone already has groups that they are a part of. I’m kind of a nerd and have been going to multiple clubs that peak my interests but nothing has clicked yet. Is it too late for me?

Advice Wanted Out of place

I’m three months into my freshman year of college. I still feel very out of place and haven’t made any solid friendships. I may have come into school with too many bright expectations of these great friendships because I haven’t experienced any. Maybe I am doing something wrong. Is it normal to feel this way?

No advice wanted (Vent) Some people are unable to get a college degree because of ADHD

That's it, that's the post. Before you judge someone for not being able to graduate college, please consider that not everyone has the privilege of being neurotypical. I don't know why so many people here like judging disabled people but we should all be more empathetic to one another instead of finding ways to tear down other struggling people.

No one chooses to have ADHD. No one chooses this life. I would give everything to be cured, but that's unfortunately not an option.

But I guess I'm "irresponsible" in the eyes of the world for having the misfortune to be born with a condition I never asked for. I don't even expect others to understand what it's like. All I ask for is that if you can't understand, you should refrain from judging others.

Advice Wanted Little bit rant little bit advice about responding to feedback

Already have a successful business but decided to take Entrepreneurship to see if I could be doing better or if I’m missing anything.
Had to do a video pitch and received great feedback back from a classmate and in my reply thanking them I mentioned I have always been uncomfortable being recorded.
I got a poor grade which I expected but my feed back from the professor included if I wanted to start a business speaking to others and getting my message out there is an important skill to cultivate.
Now, I have mentioned several times I already have a successful business, and I’m also 37 and have been trying for years to get more comfortable being in front of a camera. What really gets me though is I not only taught at this college but I also have spoken in front of crowds of thousands of people before with no problem.
I really want to reply to her feedback stating as much but am wondering if I should just bite my tongue?

Advice Wanted Genuinely lost

I’m currently a freshman at college and I’ve been having the absolute worst time here. At first I thought it was because I’m homesick plus that transition from being raised in the city, now I’m in more of an isolated farm area. I made a couple friends, been getting good grades and yet I still feel like I wanna cry everyday I wake up. I’ve faced two pretty serious incidences like getting the university cops called to my dorm at 12:00 am for suspicion of harming myself even though I’m nowhere close to harming myself, and they took an important medication that I need to take so I don’t walk around in pain 24/7. Fast forward to another incident, I got called the n word by some frat dudes and now I’m genuinely ready to leave this shitty school. I told my mom and she also agrees that it’s not safe for me at all to be there. I have two options. Go to community college for the spring semester then transfer to an Hbcu or transfer to an Hbcu right after the fall semester ends. What do I do? I’m so lost and confused.

Discussion Community college cancelled a core, required class the day it’s pre-req final was due.

For context, this was a legal writing and research class. Both it and the pre-req are 8 week classes using the same textbook and building upon each other.

For normal classes, this would be midterms week, but for 8 week courses, it’s finals week. The notice came just now and it’s troubling because there are no plans to offer it in the spring. This is my last class for the program and for a traditional, first time student, this would be taken the fall semester of their second and last year.

I’m currently processing this and eating a meal before I talk to the guidance office. My account is showing a refund for the class, but having to wait a year is going to be problematic if I have to. I also know I can’t be the only one impacted.

I suspect also, this was due to the department being short staffed and the professor of the first class experiencing an accident that injured her hands and has made using a computer difficult.

Has anybody experienced something like this before?

Advice Wanted Yearned for the college experience, not really the greatest student.

I go to a University in the City for International Studies, i got to live on campus a semester so i think I got the college experience I wanted. I have been living my life believing I want to help people and to do that I need to do something politics related. I’ve had this dream since 5th grade but politics makes me miserable now. Everyone is terrible to each other and I’m weak I don’t have the mental fortitude to thrive and graduate therefore I cannot help others. I’ve also been interested in funeral studies, and going onto be a funeral director. It’s been a backup plan of mine. I was thinking of transferring from my university back to the community college closer to me. My biggest issue being I get depressed and barely want to do my 45- 1 hour drive to class I’m thinking the 10 min distance will greatly help. Also the degree/certificate is 2 years long. I really just want to start working I’m over school; I am really just wondering if anyone has had a similar situation. It always makes me feel a little better to know I’m not the only one :)

Advice Wanted I need to lock back in

Kinda need some words of encouragement rn. A few weeks ago everyone around me started subtly showing signs of being in a bad place mentally and confiding in me I tried my best to be happy and be there for them and not let it affect me but I couldn't help but fall into sadness that they weren't doing good. Now get this, I'm already behind regular course sequence, and if I keep slacking like this I'll be really behind, and my dear professors will be disappointed in me.

I am also v privileged bc this course is my passion. Idk what and how to get back on track. I don't like the thought of taking a term off. But I'm really not feeling this rn. I keep getting distracted and I barely have any boundaries or rules for myself to prevent this from happening. I fall deeply into the grind then get burnt out. :(

Discussion made a pomodoro timer where a little dog falls asleep while you focus

Post image
9 Upvotes

hey all, just made this and I'm kind of nervous posting it

it's called Puperino. basically I kept downloading pomodoro apps, using them for a week, then forgetting they existed. they all felt a bit cold and serious. so I made one with a little dog called Biscuit in it.

when you start a focus session he wanders over to his bed and curls up and naps. when you're done he sometimes brings you a little gift, which you can keep or trade for bones to buy stuff for his room. you can also dress him up, which I spent way too long on (he has a witch hat and a crown, it's very important)

not gonna lie, not wanting to wake him up has kept me focused better than any streak thing ever did 😅

it also does the usual stuff: the timer on your lock screen, tasks, stats, and a stay mode if you're like me and pick up your phone every 4 minutes

it's free. there's an optional pro with more rooms and stuff if you want to support me

would really love feedback, even if it's "this is buggy" or "this is pointless" haha. what would make you actually keep using a focus timer?

Discussion International Student.

Idk how to really tag this. Just want to vent.

Why does college have to be so fucking hard. Especially with the new grading system im dealing with, my god. I already have an EU citizenship by blood, but I still get charged full international tuition with a scholarship that I can't even get a straight answer on the maintenance of it. I get it, Ireland has a migrant crisis making it into a passport-mill, filtering out international Europeans living abroad. But really?

Even so, I always have such a hard time with this system. I study, or try to, I use flashcards, highlight, do the reading. Nothing fucking sticks. I write it down, I go to office hours, only half of it always sticks.

Not only that, I sometimes wonder why I moved here. It just feels like the European replica of my country, and that the building that most of my classes are in needs a renovation, but probably won't because its lumped in with the arts.

Like if you want us to keep having kids even after we move countries, stop being a little bitch and fix your issues government.

No advice wanted (Vent) The Audacity of my classmate 🙄

So we’re taking an exam. One of the hardest ones I’ve taken in my life honestly. He comes up to me and says how’d you think you did on the exam. I’d say it was hard but think I did ok. He proceeds to say it was easy, yah it was easy for you because you are looking up the answers on Google because the professor left the classroom.

Like I don’t care, cheat if you want to(unless grade gets curved). But don’t come up to me thinking you’re all smart cause Google answered questions for you. All my respect is lost for that dude.

Discussion Flipped classrooms are so stupid

It's absolutely ridiculous, a 20 minute lecture video is supposed to replace two hours of content?? I get to class and nobody has even watched the video, and I don't blame them because my professor posts them literally the day before class. The last video I had to watch was posted nine hours before it was due, WHICH WAS 9AM.

Then we're shoved into groups with eight people, and half of them just sit there doing nothing and the other half stare at me silently as I'm writing out the awnsers. I ask for input from them and get absolutely nothing. The teacher wanders around the classroom and gives no advice. We get twenty minutes a question and the questions aren't hard! There's no challenge because the answers are put in the videos!!!! The other day she had us redo a question we already did from a previous class for "more practice", no changes just the exact same question. Nothing added. I end up getting the work done and then I just go and sit and do my reading for other classes until it's time to get up again.

And then we have these stupid tests, where we get a retake for every single one. We get as many pieces of paper as we want to take the test, yet she won't just make it open note. Nobody is learning anything. I had a class like this last year and at least then we had a decent textbook, but our textbook chapters are only 20 pages FOR THE WHOLE UNIT. I already had all of the reading done by week two. There's no penalty for late work, and I've talked to my classmates and they still haven't turned in assignments due last month. We're graded on attendance because that's the only way people will show up because the whole is a waste of time and money. She cuts class short every day for the SI instructor to teach, which I'm grateful there is an SI intrsuctor as least, but still.

Then the actual tests. Our last average was 37.5%, and it's not because people in the class don't know the material it's because she's ridiculously picky about the answers. I got a 50% and went to office hours and asked what I did wrong, and she couldn't even tell me. I know my answers were right. I went to the SI and she told me that she doesn't know why I'm being marked down. Other students in the class said the same thing. If you don't tell us what you want from us you can't expect us to know! At this point it all just feels like a conspiracy to show improvment between tests.

We don't have a midterm, which is whatever, but our school is requiring her to put in grades for it and she said she's "giving us all A's since everyone has the potential to earn an A". I'll take a free A, but I don't even know what my damn grade is in the class and I'd like to know.

Our lab is completely the same. They spent FORTY FIVE MINUTES going over how to work SPREADSHEETS. "First you open the spreadsheet, then you click on the column, then you write a number...." I'm not even kidding. We were put into groups and once again I'm the only one that does anything, and I try to get others involved, I ask for opinions, ask if people can do tasks and yet somehow I'm the only one that ends up doing it. The other day one of the instructors(there's three and yet only one of them knows what they're doing) spent twenty minutes telling us why we should vote. It's all absurd. It feels like I'm in some alternative dimension where everything is upsidown and everyone is pretending to be stupid. One of the guys in my group was reading a research article for an assignment and I watched as he put it into chat gpt and then joked about having to use ai because there's "too many big words". I'm not even kidding. USE A DICTIONARY. THIS IS AN ECOLOGY CLASS AT LEAST TRY TO GIVE A DAMN ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT.

Then we have an assignment that's supposed to take us the entire semester, and I went to office hours to ask about it. I showed her my ideas and she said "I think you're focusing too much on the cells", but my project is literally on a unicellar organisms, and it's not like I picked that, that's what SHE assigned to me. Most of her office hours take place exactly when the lab does, so there's only one day a week I can actually make it to them.

We have a in class quiz too at the beginning of lectures, which is fine with me, but it just feels so pointless when we get bonus points for writing our name, yet she marks right answers incorrect without explaining why. I just need to know why.

The entire class feels like a joke and I'm tired of it. I love biology and I love learning about it but with the classroom structure and the lack of explication for everything makes it hard to want show up. But of course we have to, otherwise we fail the entire class. At this point I'm convinced it's some social experiment to see how much people bullshit people will tolerate.

No advice wanted (Vent) I may have to come back next year to graduate and I feel like shit

I have had a rough semester in the past few months outside class with my laptop charger getting stolen at the library, making the situation even worse. I fell behind on my assignments due to my missing charger, which happened just before my assignments were due, and it does seem like I might have to come back next year to graduate because of the rough semester I had. I feel like shit because of it, and this was supposed to be my last semester.
