Advice Wanted started college with no idea what I wanted, found it and now I'm behind ??
Okay sooo I'm a first-gen college kid. Which means no one in my family has a damn clue what college is about or what oppurtunities there are, the self discovery of it all, I was essentially on my own besides friends and advisors. I could have reached out more, but I didn't. I knew I wanted to double major (because it looked good on paper, opened more doors, and I had enough dual-enrollment) but I bounced around so many ideas and over-researched. I had no idea what I was even interested in besides psychology. But psychology is oversaturated.
Well, I ended up doubling in psychology and criminology. I don't hate it, I actually really enjoy it, but as we go through baby-level lessons on neuroscience in psych and forensics in crim, I'm realizing I'm a lot more interested in STEM-related studies than I had previously thought. I've always followed the "art kid" path even though I've never been particularly good at art, it was just... the thing I was supposed to do. Don't get me wrong, I love wheel-throwing and photography, but as hobbies. Not careers. Art was just what everyone said I was good at.
But at the same time, science classes bored me to death, and I never even considered the possibility of wanting to study anything like that. But now, seeing how hungry I get for neuro-related psychological concepts, I'm both excited and afraid. If I were to follow a route for say, psychiatry, that's a hefty workload. I'd need to get a Doctorate to go anywhere with that, and I'm not the brightest bulb. Also, working in forensics as a science tech, or toxicology, or pathology, it all makes my bones itch in a good way. I like it, it makes sense for me.
BUT. The thing is. The kicker. In order to hit both of these bases (as in to keep them both as possible career choices), I would have to switch out crim for biology or some other hard science. I do NOT feel equipped for a hard science major. I haven't taken a math class in 3 years now, I think I would probably die. Not to mention, I would have had to be pre-med by now. It's been a semester. I'd have to take summer classes to catch up.
So I guess, after all this, what I'm asking is this: How the hell do I pivot??
TL/DR: Switching one of my majors from Crim to a hard science (likely Bio), but a semester of pre-med is already down the drain. What do I do?! Is it too late for me? ;(
