General Cleaning Cleaning coins mixed with broken glass

We had our spare change in a glass jar on top of the fridge. Should've seen it coming, but jar fell and now I have a cardboard box full of spare change and broken glass. What would be the best way to approach this?? I'm thinking pick out the big pieces and then... coins in a pasta strainer with large-ish holes and rinse them? That's the best I've got so far... please help!

General Cleaning Never taught how to deep clean

So, I was never really taught how to deep clean, or clean in general, kinda figuring it out as I go. I’m fully prepared to go buy cleaning supplies!! Sorting by room here for reading ease:) There are so many questions here, I’m so sorry! Side note- I rent, so I can’t replace anything.

-Floors: I have carpet, hard floors, and linoleum. What do I do? What floor soap? Do I just vacuum the carpet and call it good?

-Kitchen: I’ve been using all purpose spray for counters and stove. Good? Do I clean the oven? Sink? What for the microwave? Do I clean the dishwasher?

-Bathroom: Again, all purpose spray for counters, chlorox wipes for outside of toilet, toilet bowl cleaner inside, glass cleaner for mirror. I have no clue what to do for the shower, I am embarrassed to admit I did not know I had to clean that. I thought the soap I was using in there was also cleaning the shower.

-Laundry: Do I clean my washer and dryer? Lint trap is emptied every time!!

-Misc: Windows are foggy inside the panes- can that be fixed? Is dusting really necessary? How often and what gets dusted? What am I missing on this list that I should be cleaning?

Discussion What home fragrance actually lasts without being too overpowering?

hey everyone! What do you use to keep your living room smelling nice without the scent becoming too strong? I've been looking into different home fragrance options, and it seems like some scents smell great at first but barely last, while others can get a bit overwhelming after a while.

I came across the ESPA Bergamot & Jasmine Candle (240g), which has citrus notes like bergamot, orange and lemon, balanced with jasmine, lavender and eucalyptus, plus warmer notes of cedarwood, patchouli and tonka bean. The scent profile sounds interesting, but I'm curious about how citrus-floral candles compare with sweeter or woodier ones in terms of scent throw and how long the fragrance actually lasts. For those who've tried different candles, what has worked best in your living room? Are candles worth it for lasting fragrance, or have you had better results with reed diffusers or other options?

Laundry Dry cleaning costs feel like a monthly subscription. I'm phasing out my "nice" clothes.

I have been thinking about this for quite some time. I also treated my "nice" work clothes with care, so they can last long. I follow the washing instructions, when it says dry clean, I do that. I try to buy the traditionally delicate fabric because I like how silk and wool and cashmere feel and look. So I try to take good care of them. But, the dry cleaning cost adds up over time.

Because of that, I feel like I needed a change. I did a slow overhaul of my work wardrobe. So I bought more cotton, synthetic (though I was a bit reluctant) items that can be machine washed. Ideally also can be put in a dryer, too. Though that is optional.

I kept my cotton shirts, they are just fine. The silk, I leave them in the back. Cashmere sweater, wearing it occasionally. I've been experimenting with a few Ogl dark knit sets and some Uniqlo basics to see how they hold up to regular laundering. I am fighting my urge to get more Linen pants. Just because it is so hard to keep them nice and somewhat not wrinkle (I know that i the appeal, but it makes me look not put together) I am phasing out my high maintenance clothes, letting them sit.

Does anyone else think of it as a subscription? Or is it just me?

Discussion Building a better dustpan?

Thumbnail

I'm working on a personal 3d printing project - a humble dustpan, and I'd be curious to get people's thoughts.

I'll say right off the bat that 3d printing isn't perfect for this, as it can leave surfaces rougher than moulded plastic, but I still want this to be as good as I can make it.

The dustpan's size is currently 26.5 cm (10.4") wide at the mouth, and 30cm (11.7") long overall, and height is up to 57 mm (2.2"). It's made of two different materials: Rigid PETG for the body (orange in the pics), and flexible TPU (yellow) for the blade and for the fins that will grab a broom handle. My aim for the broom handle grip is to hold a reasonable range of sizes (about 21–25.5 mm / 0.83"–1").

I've added a comb for the broom - I've never had one with a real comb, so I'm just guessing how big to make it. Right now the tines are 12mm long and spaced 5mm apart.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how I can improve this?

What do you find fails on dustpans?

Anything that annoys you about some or most dustpans?

Do you find a comb like this to be useful? Any drawbacks?

I'll be sharing the model free on Makerworld when it's done. Thanks!

Kitchen Yikes. Knife fell into heating element in dish washer. Need guidance 😭

Welp. Had the dishwasher running last night and woke up to the smell of melted plastic (yum). I guess a knife fell under somehow. Tried removing it but seems pretty stuck. Was thinking about adding some external heat like a hair dryer or something. Also how does this affect the other dishes that were in the wash at the time?

Any tips or advice is greatly appreciated.

Discussion whats the best mold remover that actually works

bathroom grout has been driving me insane. tried a couple of sprays from the grocery store and they just... dont do anything. scrubbed for like 20 minutes and it still looks gray and gross, theres so much marketing bs on every bottle so i genuinely cant tell whats worth buying vs whats just bleach water in a fancy container. what do you guys actually use for mold that comes back to life every few weeks?

Kitchen Enterprising young artist autographed my dining table

Post image

A sweet, unsupervised child used a sharpie to color and of course it bled through the paper on to my dining room table. It was my husband’s grandmother’s table, so it’s fairly old and the finish has chipped off in places though not where the stain happened. It’s not a sentimental table, but I would like to try to get the sharpie off if possible. It just happened today, I haven’t tried anything on it yet.

Discussion Tips on a few basics I simply ant work out(bath, kitchen cloths etc).

I have never been very good at cleaning and I mostly hate it, and really hate the physical touch of wet cloths. I struggle to actually clean something properly. (I do enjoy hoovering though).

I now have children so really need to up my game as it is taking too long to clean and I am exhausted after and then there is still a stray bit of food somewhere. Then I have used damp cloths (not dirty enough to be washed /thrown) everywhere as dont know where to put them.

Here are my questions:

1)How to clean systematically?

2) What sponge/cloth to use to clean the bath and where do you put it after

3) Best cloths for kitchen and where do you dry the dirty cloths?

4) Similar cloth question about the toilet. I end up throwing the cloth after cleaning but this is wasteful

Community Appreciation Update: I made a plan! Cleaned out my kitchen sink!

first off thank you so much to all the kind comments that I received off my last post. It truly meant the world to me to see how many supportive people there were regarding my situation. Everyone gave me so many great tips and resources. I am so appreciative to all of you and I truly thank you for your kind kindness.

To be frank over the last 22 days since I made that post, I haven't made much headway. Up until today. The most I've done since I made my post is maintain. I've tried to reduce the ever-growing filthiness of my apartment and have tried not to add to it.

I've been off of work for four days and I really intended to make some great strides in terms of my apartment over the last four days but I got sick. But as I started to recover yesterday, take a shower and head out to eat a meal. I noticed how bad things truly were in my apartment. Not that I didn't notice before. But recently it's been very warm in Tokyo. So the amount of fruit flies that I had in my apartment had multiplied.

I was standing in my kitchen, trying to moisturize my body because there's no other area that I have enough space and isn't covered in cat hair that allows me to do it. I look down at my sink. And I had the lights on usually I have colored lights so maybe I haven't been able to see my sink quite clearly. And I just see 10+ small little fruit flies moving around in my sink. I haven't cooked a proper meal in months. I haven't gone grocery shopping in months. For reasons I won't explain September was a very hard month for me.

So I'm looking down at all these flies and I just get pissed off. I saw to take myself out to dinner because I had been sleeping all day and needed to eat. But as soon as I came home, I tackled as much as I could.

Over the last two days I've been able to see the bottom of my sink. I washed the dishes I've been sitting in my sink for months. I might need to replace a pot in a pan just because it's been sitting in water for a couple months. I even cleaned my metal food catcher strainer thing with some tablets. I bought like a year ago.

And I'm writing this post at 2:55 a.m. so I couldn't complete as much as I wanted to because I do have work in the morning. But I made a plan of how I can get my apartment back to livable standards by Sunday. I really hope I can achieve this and carry this motivation onto the different areas of my apartment.

My main motivation to cleaning is so I can start decorating my apartment. I've been just getting by here in Tokyo, hardly surviving not thriving and caring the depression that I had back home into this new country where it now it's even harder for me to get by because I don't know the language quite yet. But decorating this space will make it feel more like my own. And I think that's why I've been so resistant to cleaning because I've been kind of pissed off by my situation.

TL;DR

I've been very depressed and I've been neglecting my environment. Seeing all the fruit flies that have been mating and reproducing in my kitchen sink, motivated me to tidy up the sink and create a plan.

The plan is as follows

Tonight after work – finish the kitchen. This includes recycling cleaning out my fridge because I've got some really old food in there, finishing wiping down the counters, wiping down the walls and vacuuming and mopping my floors.

Friday night or if I have more motivation later on tonight – bedroom cleaning. I want to get all the cat here out of my bedroom so I can take a shower and lay down and be comfortable so I'm going to use this de linting brush I found and brushed the hell out of my duvet. I'm going to take my sheets to the laundromat. Wash them with some really hot water. Take out the remaining trash that I have in this room organize my shelf vacuum and just make it feel nice and cozy.

Saturday is a rest day. I'm gonna go out clubbing with some friends and have a good time.

Sunday is all about the bathroom. Even though this is a throwaway account, I have a shred of pride left that I will not describe the situation that's going on in the bathroom. but my goal is to get that handled and clean my litter robot in the tub so then Sunday night I can reward myself with a nice home-cooked meal and a soak in my bathtub.

Monday and/or Sunday if I have more energy, the living space will need to be handled. More cat hair removal more recycling needs to go out. I need to figure out what I'm gonna do with my clothes because my closet is way too small for the amount of clothes that I have so I need to figure out some sort of situation with that but at least put the clothes away

My goal is to start my work week with a fully clean if not nearly cleaned apartment. I want to feel comfortable here. I want to feel like more regulated because I think part of the reason why I'm depressed and regulated this because I come home to chaos. I think if I have more structure and organization set in place I'll feel less depressed.

Sorry, that was a very bad TLDR. But if you have some organizational tips, there's probably a whole organizational sub that I could hit up for this. But please feel free to share. I'd love to hear different suggestions that are functional but also cute see cause I'm trying to also decorate and put more love into this space that I've had for almost 3 years now.

Kitchen Is this mold? What do I do to clean this?

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

So to preface this, I have not washed this in a couple of weeks because due to a chronic condition I have not had the energy between chores to clean it (sounds silly I know but it's true). Also no, I have not been using this at all in those weeks, it's just been sitting on my counter waiting to be cleaned.

Anyway I just opened it to clean it, and I see this... light brown.... fuzzy stuff(?) along the rim of the silicone mouthpiece and the lid that the mouthpiece comes in contact with. As far as I can see there's absolutely nothing else anywhere else on or in the waterbottle. There's only stuff in places that my mouth has come in contact with previously (the mouthpiece), or came in contact with the mouthpiece.

Is this mold? Is there any way to clean it out of silicone or am I just doomed to chunk this in the trash? (I'd rather not though, because it's my favorite, and the only one I own. Also I just found out the whole brand exited to drinkware market so I couldn't buy another.) For extra clarity, it's an EcoVessel Boulder.

I have always wanted a smoker, and they gave this one away with wood with it, so felt like it was a given to take. Though I am watching costs, already getting worried if this will be an expensive project. What's the advised route to clean? Lots of rust, also bottom has small hole with rust.

Discussion How to fight cooking odors

• Upvotes

Hi everyone. I recently moved into a houseshare, and my room is right above the kitchen. Unfortunately this means anytime someone cooks, my room is filled with the smell. Further unfortunately, my housemates tend to cook grease/fish heavy, super aromatic meals. I have a small HEPA filter in my room but it's just a pure HEPA, meaning it won't do much for cooking smells at all. I don't want to have to keep dousing my room in air fresheners or burning candles all the time. Any tips on what I can do to minimize my room smelling? Cheers

Flooring Question about protecting floor during moving

Hi all! So I’m not sure if this is technically asking for cleaning tips, but it’s a question about protecting the cleanliness of my rental.

I’m third trimester pregnant and plan to pay cleaners. I prefer a clean BEFORE I put my belongings in the place, not after (which brings me to my first question, is that what people usually do?)

Second. I’m a strictly no shoes in the house person. Is there any low cost disposable floor protection I can lay down on the floors and carpets of my living areas to create paths for the workers that will NOT slip? I’m assuming movers will not want to remove shoes for work safety reasons. I read online they might refuse shoe covers.

Any general tips on how to keep my living space clean during the moving process?

Bathroom Dye from package on sink

Hi all, I don’t currently have a picture of the problem, but I am currently dog sitting at a neighbors house and I left a package of Kroger exfoliating cotton rounds on the sink and they got wet. A red dye transferred from the package onto the sink and I can’t get it off the sink. I already tried dish soap, rubbing alcohol, and a hydrogen peroxide based cleaner. I let each sit (separately) for around 3 minutes each because I don’t want to damage the sink finish, and the stain didn’t lift. I was wondering there are any suggestions you guys might have to help get the stain up.

Discussion Kaboom automatic toilet bowl cleaner?? NSFW

Ok so I saw this on an ad but dang it if this doesn’t slowly destroy my toilet it seems too good to be true???

It hooks up to the tank refill line, passes through their little purple compartment with cleaner in it, and feeds directly in to the main tube that refills your toilet bowl. Thus, it cleans your bowl every time you flush.

I seriously hate cleaning the toilets in my house and if this prolongs the cleaning WITHOUT CAUSING DAMAGE TO MY TOILET OR ME, this would make me so happy.

Is this trash or the worth it???

Tools/Equipment Human urine in rug and chairs and what product do I use NSFW

What products can I use to get human urine smell out of my rug and chairs? The chairs have this carpet like material and the rug is one of those super heavy duty rug that was cut in the store or something.

I am so stressed out, I’m a college student and all I have are this Lysol disinfectant spray that I’ve sprayed everything with multiple times, and this comet bleach powder which idk how to use or even if this is the right thing. I have so much to do and I’m feeling very overwhelmed because I feel like the longer it sits the less likely it is to come out, and I can’t just throw these things in the washer. I had a friend over and she peed herself and slept on the carpet and peed herself on the carpet because she drank too much, and I am beyond furious. Sorry for the TMI. I felt like I should have at least explained how I got in this situation.

Laundry Can’t get clothes to stop smelling like sweat after washing! Tried dettol.

I’m in London UK for any product recommendations.

I have tried literally everything. Fairy liquid on the armpits, washing on higher heats, using dettol… I’m at a loss! I wash at 40 or 60c depending on what it is, warm wash.

I live in a small flat and we don’t have radiators so I have to just hang dry the clothes in our room, perhaps this is part of the issue, but I don’t know how else to get around this (no dryer, no radiator in our house, no garden to hang).

I have had this issue for years, even when I could dry my clothes on a radiator.

Like an hour after putting on the clothes, the sweat must ‘reactivate’ and I REEK! I shower every morning and all my clothes smell clean, are cleaned, so I don’t know how to stop this.

Please I am desperate!
