Chess Improvement FINALLY! Even if nobody cares, I had to share it.
I’ve been chasing this for a long, long time… (over far too many games).

I always find chess.com is kind of hilariously dissing me by placing a mensa IQ ad after a loss

Hello all,
I've been playing chess on and off for a few years now but have always been particularly bad at it and have never been above 300 elo for reference. I figured you might all get a kick out of this particularly -100 iq game I had recently

In Catalan positions, I notice the engine favors exchanging the c pawn off. I noticed also white has a high win rate in certain positions with this idea. Why is this positionally good? Wouldn’t it make more sense to keep the tension, or even gambiting the pawn in some lines? And how do you know when to take versus when to leave the tension? Would be nice to hear some advice from my higher rated players in this thread, but any advice is welcome. Thanks!

I knew I was going to lose, don’t get me wrong but IMO I find it weak to not just checkmate. They chased me for a while. Why bother? I guess because I refuse to resign?

How do you change the board that pops up in profile? Ive tried to change it using theme>board and stuff, but it won't change, I saw another profile with a different board, but mine won't change to the board theme I use.

I just won a super satisfying game - and to get over 2000 again nonetheless !
Opponent took advantage of my poor time management and was able to defend an endgame down an exchange. Up until the final seconds, that is, because they failed to notice my sneaky king move move (Kc3) was setting up exactly Ra8 checkmate.
Ne6 was not even a capture by the way. It was a innocent-looking move played very quickly so my time would run out .
I censored their username because the idea is obviously not to shame my opponent, but for anyone interested, here's the link to the game: https://www.chess.com/game/live/185399584864

I moved white pawn to g4 to put King in check… and by looking at this a checkmate. However, chess.com didn’t declare it a check mate and I’m racking my brain looking at it. What am I missing? He resigned after the move instead of it become mate.

Many of us were taught how to play by our fathers, but maybe it was a mother, sister, brother, friend. In any case, you probably remember the day when you finally won your first game. What was that day for you and how did you feel about it?
I’ll start. My dad taught me how to play when I was five. I asked for chess magazines and begged to play him every day. One day when I was nine we played a game just like always except…I was winning more pieces. And then actually won. He looked really surprised. When I think back on it I realize he was proud as a father but then also embarrassed. It felt strange, but ultimately I was pretty pleased with myself. It launched a few years of study and tournament play for me.
