"Watson did not have a bad game" - Some non-ball knower
He played the same level of below average bordering on bad that he has played every game this season. In fact, Watson plays at most one good quarter of football a game.
- Jags - 4th Quarter (garbage time)
- Bucs - 3rd & 4th Quarter (Watson's most consistent game)
- Panthers - 4th Quarter
- Steelers - 2nd Quarter (No idea why people say first half. We punted the entire first quarter)
- Jets - No good quarters, though the only TD drive was in 4th.
Luckily for us, that good quarter has typically come in the 4th quarter. (the exception being the Steelers game's 2nd quarter)
Basically Watsons formula for winning is based on the defense keeping the opposing offense in check for all 4 quarters and for one of our talented skill position guys to make at least one amazing play a game (denzel boston every time). The reason why Watson is in the position to do game-winning drives is because Watson didn't execute for the other 3 quarters of the game.
Watson didn't play "bad" only , because we have lowered the bar
Watson is not seeing the field. He doesn't know when hes hot. He is not changing protections. His accuracy is inconsistent, and he has consistently limited YAC with his throws. People slander Minkah for the hit on KC, when KC's head wouldn't have been the point of contact, if the ball was thrown accurately. Watson stares down his 1st reads, and panics before getting to his 2nd & 3rd progressions. Defensive backs are dropping his interceptions, and he is picking up his own fumbles. You can see this in every game, win or loss.
I do not think Watson has improved, since week 1. Over time it has become apparent that the offense is kind of bending itself backwards to accommodate him. He often looks panicked on anything that isn't scripted throws.
And there is a difference between designed/scripted throws and first read throws via progression. Watson looks best, when the throw is predetermined. The high percentage catch & throw plays to the outside, that coaches give to rookies to give them confidence. I am honestly shocked teams haven't picked off our habitual tendency to throw an intermediate hitch or out route to the left side field at the start of halves or drives. (this isn't for lack of trying. Pretty sure the steelers dropped this INT)
This jets game showed that when everything around Watson is not bolstering him, we don't win. This jets game is a representation of last year's team.
- What happens when special teams is a liability? Like in 2025
- What happens when your receivers consistently drop the ball in pivotal moments? Like in 2025
- What happens when you have no run game? Like in 2025
- What happens when you can't protect the QB? Like in 2025
This game essentially answers what is driving the force behind our recent success. It also is a sneak peak at the sustainability of this success.
Watson is not the reason we've won, but he will probably be the reason we lose.
Edit: These initial replies are certainly showing that I need to improve my messaging. This is not a pro-watson post
Edit 2: Clarity regarding Title & Apology
The game loss is not his fault legitimately, but he's still playing bad. The point i'm making is that against the Watson typical poor performance wasn't saved by the rest of the roster. Partially because he threw a hospital ball to one of the youngin's capable of saving him.
The Jets loss may not be his fault, but many losses in the future will be, because the core template for Watson's success, is that our defense plays lights out for 4 quarters and one of our rookies makes a play when it matters.
It has nothing to do with Watson, in fact given our 18pts per game there is far more evidence that Watson is the reason we aren't BLOWING TEAMS OUT
Gonna go ahead and apologize for being confusing. It's a communication issue on my hand if so many folks were confused. The author is at fault not the read lol.
