Food/Drink Is it time to stop tipping in Los Angeles?

Food prices are ridiculous in Los Angeles. Typical restaurant meal is $100. Servers get paid $20 an hour, then expect 20% tips!!!

So with 4 $100 tables per hour, which is a low estimate, that's $20 per table, or $80 per hour in tips + $20 base equals $100 an hour!!!!!

That's over 200k a year! Should we really be subsidizing servers with tips so they make $200k a year???

About LA How many drivers don't go into the intersection until the light turns yellow? And there making a left turn

Just as the post says. I've seen so many drivers wait until the light turns yellow almost red before pulling into the intersection to make a left turn which causes everyone behind to basically run a red light momentarily. How many people do this? I've only seen this happen in California

Recommendations Psychic/Medium Recs?

I’m looking for a psychic/medium in the LA area.

I know that MOST are scammers just trying to exploit people. That’s why I’m asking here. Has anyone had a positive experience that you felt was legit?

I’ve never gone to one before. I’m not even sure I will end up going anyway but I’m interested.

Any recs?

Any other question! Anyone in LA with a corolla hybrid worried about their catalytic converters?

I want to purchase a Corolla hybrid, but given the fact that this is Los Angeles, I’m worried about the cats being stollen on this car. My LA people, what are you guys doing to prevent this? And does it actually work? Any insight is useful, especially people with the same car. Have those cat shields done anything, or are the local thieves just cutting through those too? I’ve heard other cities like Santa Clarita had a program where the police department will etch your VIN into the cats, how often does LAPD do these types of things? Thank you in advance and sorry for the “unique” question

Things to do Got 6 hour layover in LA - anything nearby to the airport that I can do for a couple of hours?

As the title suggests, I'm flying into LA this Friday. Annoyingly I have a 6 hour layover and there is nothing I hate more than LAX airport.

Is there anything close by to the airport where I can grab some good food/drinks and kill a couple of hours? Bare in mind I will likely have a big suitcase with me because LAX is shite and has no luggage storage and they never let you check your bag in early so ideally not something which involves a lot of walking/activity.

Thanks

Visiting LA for the weekend and looking for some stores to visit?

Looking more for unique brands, preferably LA based, not any national chains/things I could find elsewhere. Unfortunately leaving Saturday night so melrose trading post isn’t an option.

Adding more context: I like brands that are a bit more ‘camp’- think Tombolo

About LA Planning to stay in DTLA. Is it really unsafe, specially for tourists?

Hi! So we’re looking for an accomodation for 3 nights. We’re planning to stay around DTLA or basically near the metro as we don’t want to heavily used Uber.

Is it still unsafe right now? Or do you have any hotel recos that’s affordable and near the station?

Food/Drink "Reservations" in west LA?

Went with a group of 6 friends to a local restaurant for lunch. The restaurant was entirely empty and the server asked if we had reservations... we said no and the server paused and had this weird look. Then asked us again and we still replied no. He then sat us at a table but definitely did so reluctantly.

Is "reservations" code for something? Or he just didn't want us to be there?! This restaurant can hold at least 40 ppl so felt really weird to have this interaction given it was completely empty mid day.

Housng NorCal relocating to LA, not sure where to go?

My partner hates LA (sorry -- I don't know you all are lovely folks; it's just the environment!). He calls it Hell-A... but we have to move for a job and will likely be here for about 4 years.

Our "vibe" is very Santa Cruz mountain types. We love our Toyota 4Runner. We love lots of acreage with no one around. We love trees, mountains, forest, or the beach.

We don't like pretension or concrete jungles. We like writing, quiet mornings, and none of the sort of "hollywood" "in-crowd" stuff.

We would prefer a genuinely down-to-earth community in the mountains or on the beach. A community of builder types + scrappy people who are not afraid to get their hands dirty. What neighborhood would you recommend?

Our budget is around 10-15k/month.

EDIT: The job is in Torrance

Transportation Has anyone ever parked in the residential areas near LAX and then taken a ride service like Uber or Waymo to the LAX Metro Station?

I’m flying out for a couple days a month over the next six months, possibly more. I’m looking for an easy way to store my car cheaply and not have to wait at the airport for a distant parking service’s shuttle.

My full plan is to drive from home to a nearby residential area, then Waymo to the metro station, and then take the airport shuttle to LAX. Is this a good plan? Is it a bad plan?

It looks like parking around the area is not permit only. I looked at the signs on Google maps. I will be driving over there beforehand and confirming what I saw on Google maps.

UPDATE

I spoke to an operator at parking control, and told her my plan, and asked who I should check in with before executing it. In addition to giving me a number, she told me she’s been fielding a lot of calls about exactly what I’m asking about from residents in that area.

A commenter mentions parking a mile and a half out which would lower the risk of having my car complained about, but I suspect my savings in that case will not be worth the extra steps.

Visiting Spending a few days in LA, I want to see more than a pink wall, grocery store, and the walk of fame! What are your must visit spots?

Spending a few days in LA! What are your must visit spots?

I’ll be in LA for a few days and want to make the most of my time! I’m not against popular places, but I’d rather visit somewhere that’s genuinely good or has something special about it than somewhere that’s popular just for the sake of it. I’ve never been to Erewhon, but traveling to LA to visit a grocery store just isn’t my thing.

Here are some things I love:

Classic Hollywood: Historic restaurants, legendary hotels, old movie theaters, vintage neon and Hollywood history.

Mid Century LA: Googie architecture, retro diners, vintage coffee shops, modernist homes and classic California design.

Tiki: I’m considering Tiki Ti and Tonga Hut! Is one better than the other? Any other must visits?

Disney: I’ll be visiting Disneyland afterward, but are there any other Disney related spots worth checking out around LA?

Christmas: Any year round Christmas shops, decorations or festive spots?

Coffee: Cool coffee shops, especially vintage or retro ones!

Food and hidden gems: Old school Italian, classic diners, historic food institutions and interesting places with a story to tell.

I’d love recommendations from locals or people who really know LA! I’m especially interested in places that have a unique character or a bit of history behind them.

Thanks so much!

Transportation Increase of 18 wheelers sitting in the fast lane?

Warning: this ended up being a rant.

I’ve been commuting to DTLA for about 3 years, and I’ve noticed a significant increase in the number of 18 wheelers in the fast lane. I usually try to be give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they’re trying to get into the HOV lane, but in the past three months, I’ve seen about 5 trucks just sitting in the passing lane. Even if they’re passing, I thought it was courteous to stay as far right as possible. For context, I take the 110 freeway, which has, what? 6+ lanes?

Tonight, I was driving home and I admit that I was probably a bit more aggressive than necessary. However, I did let him know that he needed to get over by flashing my lights from a distance. Maybe they didn’t see me? I flashed again, and the cars behind me started flashing as well. He just sat there, so they all went around him. When I passed him, he flashed his lights back at me. I thought maybe a cop was there, but there was NO ONE. I know driving shouldn't have this much control over me, but it drives me insane.

I thought there was an etiquette for truck drivers. I don’t remembering this happening when I was younger. When the average joe sits in the passing lane, I usually think, “Oh, what a terrible driver.” But I thought getting a CDL was pretty difficult and required a good amount of training? Maybe I'm just being a Karen 😭

Edit: Forgot to mention that I'm born and raised LA. Family used to travel all over, north, east, south, but we've slowed down.

Recommendations Donate car to a Los Angeles high school?

My partner’s mini finally is making its way into the big garage in the sky 🥲 I’m helping them by trying to find a place to donate and I saw on some other Reddit posts from 5+ years ago some people recommended donating it to a high school for auto shop!

Does anyone know of a high school in the greater Los Angeles area, preferably in the Valley or on the UCLA side of LA (Ventura county would be ok too), that is or may be interested taking car donations for shop?

It’s a 2010 Mini Cooper and it is possible to fix it… but just for personal use is too much to justify over just getting a new/newer car because it’s an entire engine tear down. Which is why we think it would be perfect for a high school shop class! (Maybe even community college??)

Thank you in advance!!

Hi All,

My mechanic ship up shot and sold the building! yay for him.

It leaves me in the position where I don't know anyone else in the neighborhood who is trustworthy.

I'm wondering if anyone has a spot that they feel is reliable and trustworthy?

Working Job search never ending…is there something I’m missing?

• Upvotes

I was laid off middle of last year and have been looking for work since then (prefer West LA as I’m in suburbs more into TO). I slowed down a bit while I finished my MBA earlier this year. I never had trouble getting a job before I lost my previous job (small tech startup). Now, I get constant no’s. I’m exhausted. I run every single thing through AI to make sure it will all pass ATS, that there aren’t any mistakes, etc. I tailor each resume and cover letter to the job I’m applying for. I’ve created work samples and a portfolio site. I will put tiny little details from the deepest depths of their websites or socials to show I’ve done research.

I’m going insane! I need a job so bad. I need health insurance. My husband is a vet and I need to help support him too and he’s getting tired of hearing “I’m still looking…”

I KNOW I’m not alone in this but it’s making me stressed as hell and not sure what to do?? I started with jobs I obviously would want to further my career, but have been applying to literally anything now. I got turned down by a GM job and a part-time admin job…that I don’t even want but I’m desperate!

I guess can anyone give tips or advice, something I’m missing? Better place to find jobs? I have an agent scan every morning for jobs that are good fits and then I search myself on BuiltIn, Handshake (from when I was in graduate school), LinkedIn, Indeed, general google searches and just going to companies sites that I’m interested in.

Thanks for your time🙏

Recommendations Deep cleaning service you love?

Have any of you used a deep cleaning service you were really happy with? I need one that can come to Venice, is reasonably priced, and will do a really thorough deep clean before I move into my new place. Thank you in advance for your recommendations!
