Rubber City Resistance in Akron, Ohio last night, greeting Swampy

Post image
52 Upvotes

Two events, two protests, one afternoon, multiple rich con men.

While we were in Lakewood yesterday greeting Senator Bernie Moreno at the fundraiser he headlined with Bobby George's parents, our sister group Rubber City Resistance was in Akron giving Vivek Ramaswamy a proper welcome at his event.

Quick refresher on Lakewood: Moreno publicly told Max Miller to resign over the abuse allegations from Miller's ex-wife. Then he turned around and co-hosted a fundraiser with the parents of Bobby George, who pleaded guilty last year to attempted strangulation after originally facing nine felony counts, including attempted murder and kidnapping. Rules for thee.

Over in Akron, Rubber City Resistance summed up Vivek's whole campaign in six words: VIVEK, TRUMP, ELON. THREE RICH CON MEN. Vivek co-led DOGE with Elon before bailing to run for governor, and he's spent this race chasing Trump's endorsement instead of answering for anything. The same guy still hasn't called on Rodney Creech to step down. He just quietly scrubbed their photo together.

Huge thanks to Rubber City Resistance for holding it down in Summit County. Northeast Ohio Visibility Brigades showed up in two places at once.

Trump isn't on the ballot in November, but Trumpism sure is. Early voting in Ohio is open now through November 1st. Vote early and in person if you can, and bring a friend or family member. The sooner the better, because anything can happen: illness, car trouble, a family emergency, or this administration pulling a fast one on DEMOCRACY.

Shops worth checking out

I moved away about 10 years ago and so much has changed since then. I have no idea what's around anymore. I was curious if anyone had any recommendations on places to check out. Coffee shops, card shops, thrift stores, book stores, favorite food places to get takeout or a tasty baked good. I just wanna see some awesome local businesses 🄹

Also if anyone can recommend a place that has good matcha that is moreso on the Kent, Tallmadge side, I would be so grateful. On a recent visit to see family, I stopped for a drink and it was surprisingly awful. And I'm not even a quality snob when it comes to matcha so idk. Thank you!

Looking for mole removal (the animal)

I’m located near Fairlawn/Bath and looking for someone who removes moles. We’ve attempted some of the home remedies to get rid of them, but they keep coming back and I’m starting to notice cracks in our driveway/walkways that weren’t there before. I’m worried they’ve moved a lot of dirt out from around our foundation.

The Goodyear Heights glass recycling bin has been missing for weeks—Akron needs better options on BOTH sides of town

Just wanted to give everyone a heads-up so you don't waste a trip: the purple O-I glass recycling bin at the Goodyear Heights Metro Park (Eastwood Ave entrance) has been completely gone for several weeks now.

It’s incredibly annoying because it was literally the only drop-off option for the entire East Side. I remember back when I was younger, Akron actually allowed glass right in our regular curbside bins. It feels like such a massive step backward that we can't do that anymore. I've been walking my glass over there on foot, which is exhausting enough, only to find the spot empty with zero updates from the city.

Honestly, even when it was there, the city needs to do better. They desperately need to put another bin in the Ellet neighborhood. Forcing people to trek all the way out of Ellet and try to get across the railroad yard just to recycle some glass is ridiculous.

And it isn't just an East Side problem. I’m originally from the West Side and grew up right on the Fairlawn border—the city needs way more coverage over there, too, instead of making people drive all over the place just to do the right thing.

If you have glass piling up, the closest active backup right now is Joy Park Community Center (825 Fuller St), but that's a major haul if you live further east and don't drive.

I’m planning on calling 311 to complain and report the missing bin. I'd highly recommend anyone else on the East Side, Ellet, or the West Side do the same so they hopefully bring it back and realize we need real city-wide coverage over here!

How many people have chickens in Akron?

Akron municipal code says ā€œno fowl within 100 ft of houses.ā€ Though all of us who live within the city of Akron know that practically no one has a yard that big. And knowing that yard size, I have seen/heard of some people still having chickens. I am mostly curiously because I REALLY want chickens but my yard is not large enough to technically follow the law! So I suppose I’m looking for solidarity here!

Need help with stray who is having a hard year

I know we have a lot of stray cats in Akron, but I have a 3 year old female stray who wanders the area. She is not fixed as I cannot afford it (and no one else seems to care if the strays are fixed) and I can't take her in (allergy issues) so she has roamed around for 3 years. This year has been very harsh on her and she is failing at being a cat. She just wants to be in a home, warm, fed, and loved. She is not feral in any way. You can pick her up, pet her, hold her, she takes medicine like a champ, and she does well with my dog. She does need vet care and a bath since this year has really been hard for her. I have asked around at a few local shelters and asked a few rescuers for help but many are too full to take her. She would make a lovely pet once taken care of. I have posted pictures of her currently and from the past year or so.

If you can help her, please let me know and we can arrange to get her. She needs someone who can love her.

MapQuest has incorrect Summit County BOE address

If you happened to switch to MapQuest for your GPS this summer (lots of people did due to the "Lake America" baloney), note that they don't have the correct address for the Summit County Board of Elections. At least not as of 10/14. They still use the old address on Grant St.

Correct address: 1050 E Tallmadge Ave, Akron, OH 44310

It's good that they moved to a new, bigger building - the early voting crowd is showing up in droves! They've got plenty of workers and plenty of space, so hopefully no one has to wait too long to vote. I went during lunchtime today (12-1) and didn't have to stand in line even though there were probably 100 people there.

I did report the error to MapQuest. It's easy to do, if anyone else wants to submit a report.

Plumbers?

Hi everyone! My wife and I had Wilson plumbing come in today to do a snake and quote for pipe de-scaling and re-lining. They quoted us about 16k-10k depending on if we get juts de-scaling or de-scaling and lining. We’d like to get another quote to compare our options but we don’t know of anyone else who would do it. Does anyone have any recommendations?? Thanks!

How's life at the Ridge now that it's under new ownership and no longer Timber Top?

I saw some good recent reviews, but I'm curious if it's actually worth looking at as a potential option to live at now that it's under new ownership. I remember Timber Top's reputation all too well and want to make sure if I rent there it is no longer anything like what it was.

Hunters Lake Apartments - cfalls

Hey guys! I’m looking at apartments/homes to rent in cuyahoga falls - I toured Hunters Lake Apartments and it seems like a very cute/safe community. The one I toured is getting updated so I haven’t seen the final product, like new appliances and carpets, etc.

Does anyone have any experience at this apartment complex?

The cost of utilities seems kind of unclear, I am unsure of how much that would cost in addition to base rent - the guide was sweet but she would not say how much they are LOL

Looking for any experiences, advice, or suggestions!! Thank you!

We were just at Weathervane this weekend to see Death Trap (I highly recommend btw). I noticed a new name on the R. Shea building but couldn’t find any info on it.

Housing amendments in Akron

Can't say I'm a fan of them. If you can't come up with a decent security deposit, get your life together and save for it. But sometimes people need a helping hand. At the same time, I'm not a fan of landlords owning big numbers of houses. Some of them say they have sold or will sell which you would think would be good for potential home buyers but the landlords are selling to out of state corporations. Seems like a conundrum.

Animal Shelter in Need of Tennis Balls?

I work at a tennis court and we have a bunch of balls that get left out in the rain or just aren’t good for playing tennis anymore, but are still perfectly fine for animals or even kids to play with. Anyone know of any shelters that would appreciate some tennis balls for pups? Or anyone have a dog and want some tennis balls maybe lol? It just feels wasteful to throw out tennis balls that are fine in hindsight, just can’t be used for tennis yk

UPDATE: thank you to everyone who educated me on how tennis balls are actually not good for the pups! I’ll have to look somewhere else or maybe recycle them.

Coleman vs. Sykes.

Interview in the paper makes Coleman sound like a reasonable guy. Sykes seems personable but I think it's time to shake things up. And I'm a guy who always votes Democrat. Acton and Brown have my vote but I'm thinking Coleman will get mine as well. Spitting in the wind? Perhaps

Non-pizza options - Kenmore/Coventry

What are some good take out options that aren’t pizza in the area? Love DeCheco’s pizza, but I hate trying new places without recommendations.

Style of food doesn’t matter as much, just hoping to find different good food options that aren’t national chains. Haven’t lived in the area very long and would like to support good, local options.

Experience with Electric Vehicle in Akron?

What's everyone's experience been like having an EV in akron? Are there good convenient stations around? Currently in the market for a new vehicle and have been floating the idea of getting an EV.

Ultimately if I went this route it would be with the intention of having a station put in my garage.

Looking forward to hearing all your experiences!

I'm sorry that Trax was going the speed limit in the left lane, that doesn't give you an excuse to try and squeeze your suv between another car and me, and narrowly miss hitting me and force me onto the shoulder. I was the red cobalt that got pushed into the shoulder

Dog Friendly Rental Ideas

I am relocating back to the Akron area after over a decade away. I am currently exploring Zillow, Furnished Finder, and Airbnb for mid-term or a year long dog friendly rental. However, I know some rentals are only advertised by word of mouth.

If you have any properties available or have recommendations for solid landlords, I would love to hear them! I'm open to having a Realtor assist as I may consider purchasing a home after getting reacquainted with the area.

I previously lived in a few Highland Square rentals, but I'm open to anywhere from Portage Lakes to Stow.

About me: Solid credit score, zero evictions, homeowner for the past eight years, non-smoker, quiet and respectful tenant

I lean towards a private landlord given my situation which I am happy to be transparent about as necessary.

What I need: a 6-12 month lease in a quiet residential area, off-street parking, space and budget are negotiable

*Little to no stairs are important for both myself and my 70lb tripod pup.

Thank you for any help!
