Toledo Area Resources

Things are rough. No one can really argue about that, right? I thought maybe a big post about available resources might help people out. This is of course not comprehensive, but I can edit and add if folks want to offer more.

United Way: They help with a wide variety of things. Call 211

www.findhelp.org - Similar to United Way, resource search

https://helpnow.populationhealth.com/ - enter ZIP to see resources

OhioKan - assistance for relatives/kinship caregivers raising children.

Lutheran Social Services of NW Ohio - Behavioral health counseling, substance use addiction counseling, reentry transition services

Ohio Consumers' Council - Utility info & assistance - Spanish & English

The Ability Center - Assistance with disabilities

Sharing Collective Free Store - 2545 Monroe St, Toledo - back door in wall w/mural - Thurs 2-5:30PM only. Clothes, housewares, kitchen supplies, toys, toiletries, pet supplies.

Toledo Public Library The library is so much more than books. They have free streaming services and audiobooks, DVDs, CDs. They have community rooms that are free to use. Printing services, passport, dog license.. so much!

Pathway - Home Energy Assistance

Planned Parenthood Emergency Contraception (Morning-After Pill), Birth Control, Pregnancy Testing and Planning, Gender-Affirming Care, Prenatal and Postpartum Services, Wellness and Preventive Care, Sexual and Reproductive Concerns, STD Testing and Treatment, HIV Services, Vaccines

Neighborhood Bridges for Anthony Wayne - people can make requests that are then emailed out to a mailing list for community members to help.

St. Vincent de Paul Locations by ZIP code - Assistance varies by location - best way to ask what is available is to call the closest Catholic church to you and ask for the St Vincent de Paul committee. They distribute vouchers for their thrift store on Airport Hwy.

Meals

  • Trinity Episcopal downtown - breakfast every Sunday from 8:45-9:15 with no expectation that anyone attend services. Church members go to this breakfast as well and it’s a true free community meal.
  • Helping Hands on the east side - hot meals 5 days/week.
  • Masjid al-Islam - Friday afternoons (Depends on donations and availability of volunteers to run services.)
  • St. Patrick’s historic downtown - soup kitchen every Sunday 11:00-1:00. (Possibly also clothes and toiletries)

Favorite places to meet people?

I’m looking to expand my circle socially.

I’m 33m, have a stable career, and am looking to connect with like-minded individuals. Ideally, people who are smart, enjoy new experiences, and open to friendship/dating. Where to people go to connect with others naturally?

I’m not really wanting to go on the friend/dating apps, but am open to anything you all have found to be profitable.

Churches, social restaurants/bars, coffee shops, small groups, activity/hobby places, book stores, art classes, anything.

Thank you in advance!

Neighbor Told Us He Poisons His Lawn?

Living in north west Toledo, and a man stopped us while we walked our dog to ask if she's the one peeing in his yard. She doesn't because a random stranger has already warned us that that man told them he poisons his lawn, specifically targeting dogs. He will throw bait? into his hedges, some pieces stuff that looks white? and sprinkle M&M looking stuff on the lawn by the sidewalks. Stranger told us the last time it was a red powder?

Apparently police has been told but they've done nothing.

What bird is this? Hawk, I assume

I know the pictures aren't the best, I apologize for that. I have been picking up a babysitting kid in Northwood and I have seen this hawk(?) perched on these lights almost every time I come, on the off ramp of exit 198. I was finally able to take a picture because I had a red light and finally wasn't the first car lol. I've tried looking through field guides of the birds in our area, but those are 100+ pages and I have not seen anything with white markings exactly like this.

Thank you in advance, I'm 30 so I'm new to the whole birdwatching thing 🤣

Anywhere in Maumee that does pizza by the slice around lunchtime?

Checking to see if there is anywhere that does pizza by the slice in Maumee around lunch. Don't want to order a whole pizza usually. I know little caesars does a lunch deal but it's quite a bit of pizza.

Early voting

I voted early for the first time today, as I'll be working all day on election day. Arrived about 2:00 pm. A small line outside. Maybe 100 voters ahead of me. They had plenty of poll workers and a lot of voting machines. I was out by 2:30.

Just sharing my experience. I'm sure it will get ever busier as election day comes around.

Backpack repair

One side of the grab handle on my OutThere AS-3 backpack pulled out when I was hiking in Patagonia and I'm looking for a local place to get it fixed. I've taken it to a couple of alteration places but they look at the layers of stitching, inside pocket, and zipper that need to be peeled back before being able to access the area where the handle is sewn in and they turn me away. I can ship it back to the factory for repair but I'd prefer to save the expense of shipping and give a local place some business. Has anyone had a repair like this done by a shop in the Toledo area?

Public parks with rebounding walls where I can train using a medicine ball?

Hello, I am new to the area.

I like to throw a 20 lb ball into the wall for portions of my workout routine and need a sturdy wall to do so. I have found that soccer wall in Perrysburg but the gate to park is often locked if no soccer games are going on.

Does anyone know of any good rebounding walls or generally accessible rock or concrete walls in public parks? I am around pburg/waterville but willing to explore the region.

Thanks for your consideration!

Donate gently used coats of all sizes.

We collected over 400 coats last year.

Save the date!

If you cannot make it drop off day, please contact your local nursing home, behavioral health clinic, or school system. Let's keep these coats on our neighbors backs!

Anyone here willing to sell me their steam frame?

Hey all,

If there's anyone who was able to get steam frame (of either storage size), and not really feeling like it's for you, would you be willing to sell it to me? I'm willing to pay for your time.

Been waiting for this headset to come out ever since it got leaked around 2021, only to get waitlisted in the end. With people even on the reservation queue being pushed to 2027, it doesn't look I'll be able to get one any time soon. I figured it's worth asking in here to see if there's anyone feeling like they don't want to keep theirs.

Hope this post doesn't break any of the rules here (doesn't seem like it does)

Attention Toledo Nurses!

Moving to Toledo here soon and looking for an RN job! I mainly want to work in a high acuity ICU. I’ve been primarily looking into St Vincent’s and Toledo Hospital. Which of the two companies (Promedica and Mercy) is better to work for when it comes to pay, benefits, management, etc.? Are there any other places I should look into?
Thanks!

State Parks for Day Trips

Hello! I set a goal of visiting as many state parks as possible, and have gone to 4 so far this year (I'm taking my time): Mary Jane Thurston, Van Buren, Maumee Bay, and East Harbor. One big thing I've noticed is that except for Maumee Bay they seem really focused on camping rather than day use. I never did find a trailhead at the first two or East Harbor, but I've never looked for one at Maumee Bay.

Is this pretty standard for all of the state parks? Are there any that are exceptional for walking/hiking? So far East Harbor was the best to go out for a walk with my dog.

Edit: I know about the Metroparks and visit them all the time. I was looking for new places to explore.

Handicap Dentists?

Hi! Not sure if using the right terminology but a friend of mine is a motorized wheelchair user and is having issues receiving dental care. She cannot transfer into the chairs etc and is at the mercy of finding a friend who can lift her in and out of the dental chair, which adds stress to her as she hates relying on so many people. Are there any dental offices locally that could help? Or are more accessible offices? She also has Medicaid but at this point is willing to go outside of that for her care.

Thanks in advance!

Any car washes in Toledo with self-service wet vacs / carpet shampooers?

Hey everyone,
I’m trying to deep clean my car interior this week because the seats are an absolute mess.
Does anyone know of a car wash around Toledo that has self-service wet vacuums or carpet shampooer extractors at their vacuum stations?
Any recommendations on specific locations would be hugely appreciated!
Thank you
