This situation was Starshield, not Starlink.
The difference is Starlink sats are operated by Musk, Starshield sats are basically identical but ownership is handed over to US military once they're in space. The keys to Starshield are with the US govt.

Sorry but that's incorrect. Starshield constellation is still owned and managed by SpaceX, the sats can be leased for a time to the SDA if needed, but none have been yet. There are also only ~30 Starshield sats in orbit, because Congress refuses to pay for an expansion that would basically be a blank check to Musk.

I didn't add them up exactly, but that list has well over 250 Starshield satellites operational.

A lot of it has to do with how instrumental Tesla was for helping EVs get off the ground. Between building a high-tech, reliable EV that looked like a normal car (compare to model S to early EVs from other companies like the EV-1, Leaf, or i-MIEV), AND investing in a network of chargers so those owners actually had confidence they'd be able to charge when they were out and about, AND offering that network access for free for some time, Tesla really did make EV a viable option in a market where prior to them they were more like a novelty car. Because of that, most people still think "Tesla" when they want to convert to electric, to the point where many of them couldn't even tell you what elevtric offerings other automakers have.
For me, the lack of consistency in build quality combined witht he EA-like approach to making you pay to unlock features that they alredy built the car with the hardware for made me avoid the brand long before the last election cycle. I ended up buying an Ioniq 5 last year. And thankfully now that Ionna and Walmart are expanding around here I don't even need to rely on the Tesla network for charging on road trips. Both other options cost less and charge my car twice as fast (v3 superchargers are 400V charegers and cap at 125kW, Walmart and Ionna are 800V chargers and I can hit 250kW, and the per-kWh cost is about 20 cents per kWh lower than Tesla). So yeah while I appreciate what Tesla did to bring EV to the mainstream, there's nough non-Tesla network support out there now and solid offerings from competitors that make them a har recommend even without the political angle.

Stop buying Teslas. Now!
I bought my EV in the summer of 2019 (still have it, it's still running well).
Back then I refused to buy a Tesla because Musk was an arrogant jackass surrounded by millions of loser minions boosting his nonsense ("pedo-guy").
Fast forward to fascist-chainsaw-Musk and there are a multitude of EVs to buy that aren't a Tesla.
(I do understand and accept that some people have to buy Starlink. Unlike Teslas there are not yet any viable options. Soon, maybe, but not yet.)

u/Symphonic7 16h ago edited 16h ago

I feel like you've probably been told this before, but the Gun Americans are generally the Trump Americans.
They want to have them to rise up against what they perceive as a potential "communist" government, or to "protect" themselves from minorities.
There are a few left-leaning gun owners, not enough to matter on the grand scale, but they do exist.
Liberals and liberal adjacent have been fed a stream of anti-gun rhetoric so gun ownership (especially of the actually useful variety) will be very low amongst them.
Last, but not least, are the "non-political" American. They often own guns, but do not care to involve themselves in politics unless it directly affects them (COVID, hopefully gas prices). This group will view ANY violent uprising as terrorist bad actors and will want them put down. Unfortunately this category makes up the majority of Americans.
Things are rarely as simple as "do violence," as I'm sure you know.

We've allow our police to become a military force.

We've allowed corporations to have more rights and power than citizens.
We look to push down our neighbors if that gets us ahead instead of helping those who have less.

We have been conditioned to be us vs them.
Sadly, it us vs. them. Witness the lady who shouted about the Epstein files at a rally a day or two ago, was tackled and beat publicly while Trump egged them on and the crowd cheered, and then the police arrived to drag the victim away and leave the perpetrators to high-five each other.

I like to liken in to a group of ten survivors in a zombie apocalypse who sees an eleventh dude. They propose two things: help the guy OR murder him and steal his stuff. It’s put to a vote. Three people refuse to vote, four people vote to brutally murder him and three vote to help him.
Naturally they murder the dude and divvy up his possessions between themselves.
Now… is that group of ten survivors good people? Only four out of ten people voted for murder!

Except that a more realistic example is that 1 of the people wasn’t allowed to vote because he smoked pot in 1993, 2 of the people were so dumb they didn’t understand why it was important to vote. The 4 people vote to murder him and they all assume that his stuff will be split among the 4 of them, but one of them is a really large and a bully and he says he is keeping it all and the other 3 just agree because one day they think they will be in charge and will be able to keep everything they plunder. The 3 that wanted to help the are still in shock and are trying to figure out how the hell are we going to get out of this? So no we don’t have 10 shitty people. We have 4 shitty people, 2 dumbasses, and 4 people that are essentially being held hostage at the moment by the other 6.

I mean, imagine you bought some very expensive defense system from USA. Russia attacks you, their rockets fly at your capital city. And in the worst moment some orange redneck idol from across the ocean says "Hey, your fighting for survival disrupts global economy. Better stop and surrender to Russia." and then presses a button to disable your defences as rockets hit your capital city.

67
u/SunTzu- 12h ago
I cannot imagine that this is great for international arms sales at all.
You'd be correct in assuming this is bad for them. Europe has explicitly started reevaluating their procurements and prioritizing European alternatives. This includes rearranging priorities in order to finally get their StarLink alternative off the ground. Besides StarLink, the two areas where there aren't clear European alternatives currently are as a replacement for the F35 (Gripen is the closest) and aircraft carriers, and Europe doesn't really care that much about aircraft carriers. But when it comes to all small arms, ground vehicles, support vehicles, munitions...all of those procurement pipelines are being redirected towards European alternatives.

8
u/FreeRangeEngineer 11h ago
Sure but that does not mean that exact firmware is flashed and/or even in control. There is literally no way to prove anything short of a complete disassembly of the device in question. There could be a microcontroller anywhere in that device that intercepts and/or modifies data.

I listened to a podcast recently that coined the term getting "Gordie Howed".
Canada built a bridge to the USA. The Gordie Howe bridge. Paid for the whole thing, even used American steel, concrete, and workers for the American side. At the last minute the Trump admin blocked it's opening in order to get Canada to pay the USA for the honor or operating a bridge that the US didn't spend a cent on. It looks like they got their way.
But the take away is that the US will use whatever lever it has for short term gain while ignoring long term problems.
So to answer the question of why anyone should buy US military tech? They shoudln't. If the US finds that they can get money, power, etc out of you by pulling some lever that makes your military useless, they will. They will Gordie Howe you.

The next AG needs to bring treason charges against Musk, prosecute, pull his citizenship, then deport him. The president should then nationalize Starlink and Space X on Musk's way out the door.
13
u/AlcibiadesTheCat 9h ago
You're absolutely wrong; you can't pull someone's citizenship and deport them after they've been executed in accordance with statute.

Wow, Musk supports Russia in their war against Ukraine. Not suprised, but it's still traitorous shit. Russia is and has been for a long time an enemy of the United States. He's doing traitor Don's bidding. They are both traitors.

The Republican Party could stop this at any time by allowing Trump to be impeached (again) and (finally) convicted. And then of course Hegseth, etc. And if Vance would not uphold our treaties and responsibilities, he'd be next, until we actually got someone who would.
(Even after the most wildly optimistic midterms results -- Democrats winning all 7 tossups and even if they win both likely Republican seats SC and NE) it would still require at least some Republicans to actually participate in meaningfully good governing. And to even have a free and fair election it may take at least some Republicans to participate in defending it.)
7
u/kdizzle619 10h ago
Or we as citizens could collectively stop voting these clowns into power (Republicans). So that way we can stop wondering why they are destroying our country. They have been doing it for years and people are now just recognizing.
5
u/sblinn 10h ago
Right, but because of the way US geography works in terms of political power, even a wildly optimistic outcome for the midterms won't result in 67 Democratic Senators. There are only really two legal avenues to removing the president from office, one of which requires 67 votes in the Senate, and the other of which requires Trump's own sycophantic cabinet of incompetents to turn on him, and even that would only be for a matter of days until, again, we'd need a 2/3 supermajority to permanently remove him from office.

europe needs a starlink equivalent
48
u/ToSeeAgainAgainAgain 16h ago
ASTS is the solution, their satellites respect data privacy and are much faster than the Starlink Mobile ones. They also need magnitudes less satellites than Starlink Mobile to offer better service (less than 200 would cover the majority of the world's countries twice, vs the needed thousands for Starlink Mobile)
In fact, Europe is already negotiating buying a whole sovereign constellation from them.

I hate this. We used to be able to trust the US, they were great allies during ww1 and ww the sequel. Now, they've elected a fat, feckless, orange, self serving moron TWICE, and they're openly allowing billionaires to play with peoples lives.
Anyone who speaks against the demented orange buffoon is silenced, he started a pointless war he can't win, supports a war started by his Russian buddy and is turning America into everything it should stand against.

This is why it’s a bad idea for nations to allow wealthy civilians to control infrastructure that is critical to national defense or other nations’ defense. That Starlink, and for that matter SpaceX, operate without meaningful government control is insane.

Musk and Trump are helping the Russians because they want to see a weak Europe without the ability to regulate and protect its citizens.
Europe better ban ALL of Musk's products; Tesla, Starlink, Twitter. All of it.

They strike Data Centers of right wing bots, Musk gets pissed about it and Starlink access, a Musk product, gets restricted shortly afterwards. Yeah no coincidence. Thats for sure. And should tell every country that you cant trust Musk and his companies. The second you make this manbaby cry he will sabotage you.
And Murica should pay attention. If he starts controlling your whole communication and internet, how easy will it become for him to shut it down if he wants to. For example to support a fascist Trump regime.

Explain how Trump and Elon aren't Russian agents?

Musk should be careful, Ukraine single-handedly made expensive military hardware obsolete with their creative use of drones.
Smart people in their country can find a workaround which the rest of the world will adopt.

One fat, orange, senile, pedophile rapist can totally fuck over another sovereign nation (who is an ally, by the way), all because his boyfriend told him to, and no one in the government will stop him. Trump is absolutely a Russian asset and a traitor to the United States of America.

This is blackmail, plain and simple. Trump quietly cuts intelligence and Starlink access for Ukraine to remind them that they need to do as they're told. Ugly business.
