Open /r/WhereIsThis - Updated Guidelines

Welcome! /r/WhereIsThis is designed to help people identify the location of public places based on a photo, painting, sketch, or from a detailed description. We've got a few simple guidelines to help keep things safe and working well for everybody:

  1. Submissions: Askers (OPs) may submit a photo, video, screenshot, painting, drawing, or a detailed text description of a real (or virtual) place. Multiple images can go in a Reddit or Imgur gallery. Try to use a descriptive title to get more eyes on your post; generic titles like "where is this?" are boring and more likely to be ignored. Include as much context and as many details as you can, either in the post itself or in a comment. If your post is not solved right away, please wait one week before reposting; duplicate posts may be removed with a 1-week temp ban.

  2. Privacy: /r/WhereIsThis is for identifying public places only. Do not submit photos of personal private property, such as homes, apartments, residential interiors, etc. Do not post private street addresses in the comments. Do not link directly to personal social media pages. Do not submit screenshots that include real names, usernames, or other personal information. Do not submit contemporary photos of minors in a place where they can be located (schools, playgrounds, churches, etc.). Do not ask to identify people.

  3. Answers: Commenters are encouraged to provide whatever help they can to solve a post, from educated guesses to a direct Google Street View link to the exact location. Give the thread a skim first to avoid duplicate answers. Commenting on other answers is fine! Avoid responding to posts that violate Rule 2, though -- please downvote and report them for removal instead.

  4. Solving: All posts are unflaired by default. Once a post is solved, the asker should reply "Solved!" to the first correct answer and change their post flair to "Solved"; all threads are sorted from oldest to newest so the earliest answers will always be towards the top. Askers that delete or ignore a solved post without acknowledging the solver may receive a ban. We are exploring adding a points system in order to automatically flair threads and recognize frequent solvers for their contributions -- stay tuned!

  5. Behavior: Please treat askers and solvers with respect. No insults, vulgar hostility, bullying, or withholding of answers in order to taunt. No racism/misogyny/*phobia/other bigotry. Repeat offenders may be banned.

Tips: Context clues help. Where and how did you find the image? Do you know the story behind it? How old is it? Share as much as you can with solvers to help them help you.

Low-effort posts WILL be removed

Rule #1 is pretty clear, you must have a descriptive title. Therefore we are removing any submission that is low-effort, such as:

  • Title is "Where is this?" or some other variant with absolutely no information
  • Posts with clear identifying information that OP is too lazy to look up
  • Google Maps screenshots that do NOT include coordinates or addresses
  • Posts with no context whatsoever. Telling us where you found the image, why you want to know, and any other information can make the difference!

We want to make this a fun sub and we want to solve your trickiest questions, but we need you to meet us halfway.

Massive Fire East of Charlotte.

Flew today from Charlotte to Salisbury MD. Saw this massive fire. We were at 14,000 feet and could smell the smoke in the cabin. Looking at my flight track, I would guess it’s in the Uwharrie National Forest. Anyone know the details of what looks like a forest fire? Thanks!

hello!

i was flying from Treviso (TSF) to Eindhoven (EIN) over this place in either Germany or Belgium, in the Eifel region. I know this because I took this photo at 8.22.20 and at 8.25.45 I took another photo flying close to Aachen, roughly over the locality called Merzbrück. I calculated a radius of distance from the point of the second photo using median speed of Ryanair flights found online. but for the love of god I cannot locate the castle (or so it seems, a castle) and the village in this photo.
Aachen in the second photo.

Filming Location?

Hey Redditors,
I’m hoping someone might be able to identify this filming location from the 1996 TV series “Profiler”? While the series was filmed in Los Angeles, the pilot episode (where this photo from online was taken) was filmed in Atlanta, Georgia, where the series is depicted to have taken place. According to commentary, this location was filmed outside of Atlanta. Any information would be amazing.
Thanks heaps 🙂

Solved Found an old picture of my dad

My father (front and center) just passed away suddenly at age 69. He was my favorite person and I always loved this photo of him in a band in what looks to be the 70’s? Does anyone know where this is? He was from Connecticut, but I can’t confirm that this photo was in Connecticut. I’m not even sure if it still exists, but didn’t know if anyone maybe knew. Thanks in advance! If nobody knows, enjoy this photo of my dad being super cool in the 70s!

Open Help locating the house seen at the beginning of the Skinny Bob footage

Merci !

Solved Found this building on an image of SCP-7022 and I would like to know where this is.

I've been on a wild goose chase trying to look for the location of this building I saw on SCP-7022. It's been driving me nuts since I'm a die-hard Site-19 fan. I also found other photos of the place, but they didn't give any clues on as to where this place is. The original Flickr post with this image has since been taken down for some reason, and I since can't find the source of the third photo after I grabbed it.

I know the place is located in Amsterdam, but exactly where inside it is currently out of my reach. Any help is appreciated.

EDIT: I lied to myself. I know it's in the Netherlands because I saw a short film by Buut Virj featuring that exact building, but where in the Netherlands? I don't know. It's in Amsterdam. The short film by Burt Virj part is correct though.

EDIT 2: The first image for clarification was taken in 2013. Found that out from reverse image searches.

Solved As a young child, I visited a place somewhere in Western Europe with my parents, where there was this uncanny, deep stepped hole that had water falling into it. It was in the late 1970's.

My drawing of a distant childhood memory, and it may not even exist. It somehow scared little me witless- thalassophobia, vertigo and trypophobia combined! Somehow the fear I felt and the way I was ridiculed for being afraid stayed with me and I would like to revisit the place to confront it. I bet it was really not that big and scary but I was a weird kid.

But I never figured out what it was. It was a place I visited with my parents during a vacation.

This I remember:

-it was a deep, stepped hole, which had water cascading down in it. It had a metal fence around it, I think. You could stand near it and look down into it. It was so deep! But then, everything is huge when you are 6.

-it was made of dark, shiny, wet stone, like basalt. It seemed old, like maybe built in the 19th century.

-it was near a river, may have been the Rhine, Meuse or Mosel.

-it was probably in West Germany, Belgium or the north of France. May have been Switzerland, Luxembourg, Austria or the Netherlands. Reasonably sure it was not in the UK.

-maybe it was (near) the source of a major river?

-maybe part of a hydroelectic installation?

-maybe I saw a leaky old dry dock? Though I remember it as round.

So, yeah. I hope this is allowed. Sorry to be so vague. Thanks!

I came across this video on YouTube and I’m honestly blown away by how beautiful this place looks!

I know it’s somewhere in California, but does anyone know exactly where this lake is?

Also, has anyone actually been there? Is it really this stunning in person, or is the video heavily edited with filters and color enhancements? These days it’s so hard to tell!

Would love to hear from anyone who’s visited!

Mystery painting location

Can anyone help locate where this is a painting of? It’s a charity shop find, and is paint on board.
I assume it’s a holiday souvenir and I am guessing it’s a real place, possibly southern France or northern Italy.

When I was 13/14 I went to Dusseldorf, Germany, on a foreign exchange trip. I went to this giant gas works that has been painted like a tin of soup.

Maybe 2006, it was a giant gas works painted like a tin of soup (maybe campbells). We climbed to the top and I have never been able to find it since. Where is this?

I would like to find this place again, but I don't have high hopes, as I only have these two photos to go off of.

I was driving from Bruges, Belgium to Germany in September 2019. My wife and I stopped for lunch at a restaurant in the southern end of the Netherlands. This wasn't too far from the motorway. Our final destination was the Nurburgring in Germany, but we probably weren't taking the most direct route to get there, as we were doing dome sight seeing along the way.

We parked our car and took a short 5 minute walk to the restaurant. Both of these pictures were taken during the walk. The restaurant was a teahouse. There may or may not have been a hospital nearby.

Need help identifying a scenic road in western colorado/eastern utah

Post image
13 Upvotes

I will take a look at any suggestions and try to figure out which one it is based on pictures from other tourists.

I would ask my dad because he would know the answer, but unfortunately he passed away recently so I have no earthly idea.

My dad was a lover of maps, and he would scoff at my phones Google maps, in preference for his giant road atlases. We were in Montrose colorado, and he wanted to take me over the border to Arches national park. I do not recall which route we took, but he was super excited to take me on this extremely scenic "it ain't even labeled on the map, cait, doesn't look like anything", type of road. We were in a generally flat area, think farmland when we turned off of the main road onto a side road. It was fucking surreal. It was just, farmland, flatland... Suddenly, it exploded into insane rocky hilly terrain, giant beautiful red rocks towering above us as we drove next to some river, it was absolutely beautiful, but it came out of nowhere, couldn't even see it coming.

That's really all I remember to help identify this. It was flatland, and then suddenly beautiful tall red rock formations towering above you on a twisty windy road against a river. We were the only ones on this road. It was amazing. Any suggestions, I will look them up and research. If this rings a bell to any natives... Help me out!

To edit, I'm looking at some roads that are next to rivers and none of them are looking promising because they look like they are on "land". It was like we were low in a canyon, next to the river with red rocks towering above. Editing again since "red rocks" is vague, they were more like arches national Park red rocks, not the red rocks walls on your general Colorado highway.
