GUIDE What is a Decor Painting? How do I know if I have one?

What is a “decor painting”?

A decor painting is a piece of artwork created purely for decorative purposes. Purchased not from galleries or artists, but from decor & furniture shops like Pier 1, Homesense, The Brick, websites like AliExpress and OilPaintings.com or from markets & stands on vacation. Tell-tale signs that you have a decor painting are lots of stippling, undefined figures, hurried brush strokes, gradients, cloning techniques and a certain Bob Ross feeling to it.

Common vintage subjects would be European street scenes, landscapes of mountains / forests / lakes & rivers, vases of flowers, Tuscan landscapes, ocean & beach scenes and Asian style boats. See below for examples. They are often rectangular in shape to hang nicely above a sofa, you could even buy them from Sears as a package. Modern versions are more varied in subject.

Black velvet paintings and artwork specifically for tourists as souvenirs share many factors with decor paintings.

Where are they made?

They are produced in massive numbers in painting factories like Dafen Village in China or Mexico. Another article here:

Dafen once produced an estimated 60 percent of all the world’s oil paintings. During its heyday—when the village’s reputation as an art factory rang truer than today—it almost exclusively cranked out copies of paintings in the Western art canon. These canvases found their way into hotel rooms, show homes, and furniture outlets all around the world.

At its peak, Dafen was jam-packed with sizeable, factory-like studios, all employing Huang’s production line process. Individual workers each focused on a specific compositional element—background details, or eyes, or trees—dutifully painting their part and then passing the canvas along the chain.

Who’s the Artist?

While they are "originals" they are not by known artists. Often entire production lines will use the same signature which explains why your research many have founds pieces by the same “artist”. As quoted above, often many people will work on the same piece.

Do they have any value?

Unfortunately, they do not hold much of any value. However, that doesn’t mean they can’t be enjoyed and some are even a bit collectible.

Can I see some examples?

Decor paintings are posted to this sub almost daily, while not definitive, here are some common examples:

Landscape Paintings: Example 1, Example 2, Example 3, Example 4, Example 5, Example 6, Example 7

European Street Scene Paintings: Example 1, Example 2, Example 3, Example 4, Example 5, Example 6, Example 7

Vases of Flowers: Example 1, Example 2, Example 3 more coming soon...

Beach, Ocean & Boat Paintings: Example 1, Example 2, Example 3, Example 4, Example 5, Example 6, Example 7, Example 8,

Modern Decor Paintings: Example 1, Example 2, Example 3, Example 4, Example 5, Example 6

Unsolved Can anyone help decipher this faded French inscription on the back of an old abstract painting?

I've been trying to work out what this inscription says on the back of an old abstract painting. I'm fairly sure the upper writing is a phrase or title, with the artist's name written separately underneath.

The first word seems to start with TO, possibly TOM. After that I can make out what looks like G, U and maybe D/E. I've considered TOMGUDE, TONIGUDE or TONGUDE, but none seem to be actual French words.

I originally thought the last letter might be an X, but looking more closely, the strokes don't seem to meet to form an X. There's what looks like a dot above one of the letters and a separate stroke underneath. I also can't see a definite dot over what might be an 'i', so it's difficult to know exactly where one letter ends and another begins.

The second word on second line looks like it might start with a lowercase p and end in something like -tze. At one point I thought the phrase might read something like "Tomgude de pointze", but that doesn't make much sense in French.

The third line looks like Roman numerals, possibly XXXIII, although some of the strokes could be interpreted as ordinary numbers. So the year of the painting, could be 1833 or 1933.

The bottom line appears to be the artist's name. I can see several tall lowercase letters, possibly four, after the first character. My best guess is something like AULEF..

Interestingly, what looks like the crossbar of the A may actually just be staining on the canvas. When I zoom right in, I can't see a painted stroke joining the two sides, even though from a distance it looks like an A.

The writing is very faded, so I'm hoping someone familiar with old French handwriting might recognise a word or spot something I've missed.

Any ideas what this could actually say? The painting itself looks very very old, cracked and chipped paint.

I don't know where it came from, and the other side of it is just the same picture. Obviously, it's a colored sketch of a cat wearing a cape flying over a city. It's been in my family likely since before I was born (1988) and I would like to know more about it and the artist. I can't really read the name that well (BK something?).

I picked this up at an antique store a few days ago as I collect things relating to vernacular architecture. I haven’t found anything on the artist. Is it decor?
Thanks

Unsolved Pencil signed, framed lithograph

I was wandering around my local goodwill in Denver, CO when I happened upon this lovely find. It seems to be a pencil signed lithograph that was purposefully framed. The back of the frame is unremarkable but inside the torn paper on the back are the numbers "5597" and what looks like a "/c" below the numbers. Would love any information you might have about it.

Things I would like to know:

-1922 or 2022? (Based on date after signature)

-Is the place depicted an actual location on Earth?

-What exactly does the description and signature say?

Unsolved Signed “Matto” — trying to find a reason this wouldn’t be Francisco Matto

Thumbnail

Trying this one again as the more I look into it the more I believe it may be from the Francisco Matto 1911-1995. I found it at a local thrift store that tends to get high quality artwork..

The painting is signed Matto - It’s about 32 x 21, on a thick wood/composition board. Found other paintings of his on the same kind of board, almost the exact same weird size.

Looking at his other paintings, I found quite a bit of similarities with human forms / features being incorporated into structures, inverted figures and such. I also found street scenes of his with the same basic setup a road down the middle with buildings on both sides.

There are people worked into the buildings all over this one, too. The big pink/red shape on the right is actually an upside down woman, with her head at the bottom and legs going up into the buildings. Added a rotated pic so it’s easier to see. The left side is more orderly and the right gets more dream like... Looking at his earlier street scenes and where his work went later, this seems like it could fit somewhere in between.

And it’s signed Matto. Compared a bunch of his signatures and the M varies, but the odd A and connected TT show up a lot. The O looks close too. Put the comparisons in here.

I don’t have any history on it before I bought it. But the faces, street layout, figures, board, size and signature all seem to line up. I think there’s a pretty good case here.

Anyone familiar with his work see something I’m missing? Would like some other eyes on it.

Unsolved Two traditional Indian-style framed paintings - Need help identifying the era and subject matter.

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

These two framed paintings came with a bunch of random stuff in a house sale several years ago, and I am trying to finally get them identified.

Painting 1: A blue-skinned figure with a white halo, seated cross-legged on a yellow floral pattern. He is holding a wooden bow across his lap and wearing elaborate jewelry. The dark background paint shows noticeable aging and cracking.

Painting 2: A man shown in profile smoking a pipe. He is wearing a white tunic with a circular gold chest pattern and a pink and orange turban.

The backs have a stamp from "Canadian Art Wholesalers" in Mississauga, Ontario, but I reached out to them and they confirmed they only did the framing.

I'd prefer not to open the sealed frames. Based on the visual details and the visible wear on the paper and pigments, can anyone offer me any clues?

Found at a Goodwill. Chat and Google didn’t really narrow it down. Gave me Mikel Nelson who is an artist but the style and work he was doing seems to be in a different realm to this. Also I don’t see Mikel in the signature. Going to hang it on the wall just wanted to learn more about it. I like the frame as much as the piece so it’s a win win. Thanks for checking it out.

I recently picked this Binaca advertisement up at a thrift store in the Seattle area. It was professionally framed.

I'm trying to determine authenticity on it. It seems like there's a chance it's an original, but want to be sure. Measurements are 39x55" (100x140cm), which my research shows is the correct large format Italian advertisement size.

It also appears to be backed, with just the slightest edge visible (see photo.) The back is fully plain. I've done my best to show the printing up close.

Appreciate any insight!

This was my grandparents they lived on Cape Cod not sure how long they had this piece, unfortunately I don’t know much about it other than I believe it’s a fish and it was from an artist out on the east coast. The color photo was dated 1972, the black-and-white “61. We had it in our house growing up in the 2000s, unfortunately, it was lost in a storage unit in Northern Michigan possibly like 10 years ago just trying to see if I can find any information about the artist or the piece. (or of course, miraculously locate it lol!) thank you in advance

Unsolved Alpine landscape oil painting, monogram "HT" or "HF", any idea who painted it?

Thumbnail

Hi everyone! I have this oil painting of an alpine scene from my Great grandmother who lived in Northrhine-Westphalia, Germany.

A farmhouse with a blossoming tree in front of large rocky peaks. It looks like it could be the Bavarian or Austrian Alps.

The only marking I found is a small monogram in the lower left corner that looks like "HT" or "HF". There's no full signature on the front.

Size: 80 cm x 60 cm
Medium: oil on Wood
Frame: gold-colored wooden frame, probably original

Does anyone recognize the monogram or the style? Any info on the artist or age would be appreciated. Thanks!

Unsolved Looking for a female artist who stopped drawing police as pigs because she felt it was unfair to pigs

I'm trying to identify a female artist/cartoonist whose work focused heavily on police brutality.

The most distinctive detail I remember: she used to portray police officers as pigs, but deliberately stopped because she felt pigs were lovable creatures who didn't deserve to be used as an insult. She explained this decision in an interview. Afterwards, she depicted police as brutish, bulky human figures instead.

Other things I remember:

  • She produced many drawings about police violence and worked for newspapers.
  • Her work was predominantly black and white, with bold shapes that sometimes looked like stencils.
  • I encountered her work on Twitter, probably around 2018-2021. I believe the discussion was in English.
  • She may have been from Latin America, but I'm very uncertain about that detail.

The explanation above is a paraphrase, not an exact quote. Unfortunately, I don't have an image or a link anymore.

Does anyone recognize the artist or remember that interview?

Does anyone recognise this artwork? I came across the artist on eBay Australia sometime between 2000–2009. She sold original whimsical, slightly gothic illustrations, and I absolutely loved her work.
I was broke at the time, so I printed this image and framed it. 😂
I’ve been trying to find her again for years with absolutely no luck! Any leads would be greatly appreciated! ❤️

Unsolved Help me find a picture or juror's shoes

*Sent here because r/HelpMeFind denied because I'm looking for a picture*

I have a faint recollection of a painting or picture of a row of shoes that is said to belong to jurors. I feel like I was taught about it because it was a statement about the anonimity alloted to jurors during cases and how the court sketcher can't depict them. Google has been no help, I feel like it's real

Unsolved It's a 5x8" photo of some sort of painting, I believe. Found in a thrift store in Arizona. Could have come from Arizona, Utah or New Mexico because that's where the donations are from. I'm assuming the block letters lower left is the artist name. LAVN or LAVIN (could be a dot above the VN).

No watermark on the paper. Glossy on the front, plain on the back. AI thinks it's a photo portfolio proof of a mid-century etching, woodcut, charcoal sketch or mixed media. No google image match. The thrift store has a religious connection, if that's of any consequence.
