Hey everyone,
Let me preface this post. I am a photographer first, but I've been doing more video work and starting to invest more in video gear for the video work that's demanded of me. For reference, I've been shooting photo for weddings for 10 years, and have been doing more real estate work the past couple of years (photo and video), but am also being asked to work on other video projects (branding, remodel & new construction, content, etc), as well as working with another local wedding photographer that's looking to add more video packages to her offerings and wants me to shoot video alongside her (I have indeed shot a video for several weddings and events over the years).
That being said, I'm starting to move over to shooting LOG footage and instead of stopping down on my aperture to run with the base ISOs, I'm looking to add some VNDs to my gear bag. Doing real estate and other forms of video work, I shoot very run and gun, so I don't have the option to always swap out screw-on filters which is why I'm leaning towards a VND. I do indeed know some people either love them or hate VNDs, but for my personal workflow, this is probably the best bet for me right now. I already do have a Tilta Matte Box with a 3 stop and 6 stop ND filter, but that sometimes takes too much time to mess with on jobs and also puts a lot of weight on the front of the camera body/lens which is a nightmare balancing on a DJI RS3, especially in a pinch.
I run two Canon R6 Mark II's (will probably add a dedicated video cam like an R6V or R5C in the future)
Canon RF 28-70 f2 (95mm filter thread)
Canon RF 15-35 f2.8 (82mm filter thread)
Canon RF 70-200 IS f2.8 (77mm filter thread)
Canon RF 50 f1.2 (77mm filter thread)
Canon RF 35 f1.8 (52mm filter thread) [not concerned about this one; eventually will upgrade]
Realistically, the filter sizes I'm most likely to use will be the 82mm or the 77mm, but if I can get a 95mm and use step down rings to fit the 82 and 77, that would probably be ideal. I've come across the Freewell x Brandon Li set and the PolarPro x Peter McKinnon VNDs, but can't find too many non-youtube reviews on them, so can't tell if they're quality or just influencer hyped. I've also seen the NiSi VNDs have a pretty good track record, and a video buddy recommended the Pro Master VNDs, but they unfortunately don't make the ProMaster in a 95mm filter size. I'm willing to hear out any suggestions that you guys might have whether they were ones I named, or something I'm overlooking! Thanks in advance!
