This subreddit is a place for surfers to discuss surfing and/or share interesting stuff about surfing. It is not a place to learn how to surf.
Beginner questions belong in /r/beginnersurfers.
Examples of beginner questions:
“Is this a ding?”
“Does it need to be repaired?”
“Can it be repaired?”
“What surfboard should I buy to learn on?”
“A longboard won't fit in my car. What shortboard should I buy?”
“I'm going to buy this shortboard to learn on. Is it a good one?”
“Why can't I ride this shortboard I just bought to learn on?”
“Can someone recommend a good surf instructor?”
“How big will the waves be on my trip next year?”
“I want to start surfing. Any tips?”
“I found this board in the trash. How much can I sell it for?”
There are ample resources with which you can find answers to your basic questions.
If you want to discuss that kind of stuff, head on over to /r/beginnersurfers. It's full of people just like you, as well as more experienced folks who want to help you learn.
Beginner questions may be removed with no notice. Because it's simply too much effort to deal with every single post, individually.
Repeat offenders will be banned until they're not a beginner anymore.
The rest of the subreddit rules can be found HERE.

The beach may be gone from erosion but the Wedge is still cranking out the sets.

Might have to move to San Jose for work. Would like to continue surfing 2-3 times a week, ideally before work, with one of those on the weekend. Also have a bunch of friends in SF so would like to be able to get there easily. Any thoughts for people who live up there? Is this a pipe dream?

im "only" about 90 minutes away by car but i grew up three blocks away from the beach.
got married, had a family and now live a good 90 minutes away. i miss the ocean. the smell, the views, the more laid back lifestyle and i desperately wish i could share that with my kids.
wife doesn't feel the same and would be happy to stay where we are forever.
can anyone relate?

There's a really good reef break in my country that pumps. It has a solid local crew, which is good because it helps organise the lineup, but I've heard it can get pretty tense and that conflicts sometimes happen.
I've never personally had an issue there or anywhere else in the world, to be honest, but knowing that beforehand makes me a bit anxious when I paddle out. I feel like I'm not surfing to my full potential because I'm too conscious of what's going on around me.
Has anyone else experienced this? How do you get over it?

Anyone else notice this? I had an awful experience with horrible quality, overpriced trunks and even worse customer service. Then, I left an honest review (politely worded) and it never got posted. Considering how many people I see complaining about their Birdwell shorts ripping at the seams, buttons falling off, sizing inconsistencies, etc, I’m wondering if I’m not the only one who’s negative review didn’t make it to the review page.

Whats up, I just got a used Too Fish by Rob and this thing is wild. It’s pretty mint but just think i got it too big at 5’5”. I wanted a fish to hold up in the 4-6ft range of paddling power and sturdiness compared to my 5’1” hand shaped fish. The fins that were on it were not the Rob Machado keels made for it, but I did just pick those up and will be surfing it tomorrow to see. I do think either way I would love to size down to either 5’4 or 5’3.
If anyone is in SoCal and wants to trade, let me know! I know it’s a stretch but just got it and it’s just a tad too big.

Hi guys! Looking for some advice from people who know Portugal in late autumn.
I'm a beginner-intermediate surfer (comfortable catching my own waves, can go down the line consistently, working on improving turns and overall wave reading). I spent a week in Ericeira this August and had a great time overall, but I found the surf consistency a little hit-or-miss during my stay. There were some fun sessions, but also quite a few days where conditions weren't ideal for my level.
I now have the opportunity to come back to Portugal in mid to late November and am trying to decide between:
My main goal is to maximize water time and get the most consistent, beginner-friendly/intermediate waves possible. I'm travelling solo, so having some social atmosphere is a plus, but surf quality and consistency are the priorities.
For context, I'll be coming from Denmark and I won't have a car, so I'm trying to make the most of the trip and avoid getting skunked by a run of unsuitable conditions.
Thanks in advance!

So ive bought an inferno 72 (5’11 32L) which I have been having an absolute blast riding and im looking to get a step down board… ive found that the inferno actually goes well on waves from like 3ft but I want a more forgiving board, flatter rocker, maybe a vee off the tail but essentially a small wave playful but aggressive groveler (in a light construction with some good spring and durability)… I have thought of the following: chilli bv2, rnf 96 (maybe blacksheep but saw a used libtech for sale, firewire seaside/sp2 , sharpeye modern 2.5 and the Superbrand Spam…
Anyone that has an inferno can help me decide on something that does not overlap that much? Bc if its good enough i will be taking the inferno out most days I think.

Something that’s not often discussed: if you optimize the pad for a thruster setup by pushing it all the way back, if you also ride it as a quad, your back foot will be behind the fins. Conversely, if you optimize it for a quad setup and also ride it as a thruster, your back foot won’t be back enough and you will only utilize half the back fin in turns. Thoughts?

Dozens of sick sea lions have been beaching themselves across the bay area over the last few months due to domoic acid poisoning stemming from a toxic algal bloom
Domoic acid poisoning used to only show up in the summer but it's happening year around now
The increase in Algal blooms may be a result of the warmer water temperatures caused by El Nino
(Yes, I actually did my research this time)
So if you see a beached sea lion stranded, sick, or not moving properly, call The Marine Mammal Center hotline at 415-289-SEAL

The story surrounding Al Cleland Jr.’s reported World Surf League suspension escalated dramatically Monday after his former girlfriend, German professional surfer Noah Klapp, publicly accused him of physical, sexual, and psychological abuse during their relationship.

Let me preface: I’m a water skier and not a surfer… but I figure you all know a thing or two about wetsuits
I just ordered this smoothskin wetsuit top from a retailer. I got it 50% off sale so screaming deal. Unfortunately, they did not fold it neatly to ship it, and USPS crammed it in my mailbox, so it’s got pretty bad creases. The creases 95% disappear when I put it on and it stretches, so I guess they’re just cosmetic?
My main concern is the smoothskin “cracking” on the shoulders. Looks like what I’d expect if the suit were old or used for a bit, but this is supposedly brand new.
My question is: would you accept this at a 50% discount? Any serious reliability concerns with this? I’m new to wetsuits and this is my first ever purchase
Thank you!

Regardless of what’s said, this is definitely the gnarliest artificial wave so far. That thing’s nuts
