Dungeon Crawler Carl protagonist dynamic

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I am about to finish DCC and I really enjoyed the dynamic between the two main characters.

I am looking for a pair, one over the top sassy character and a grounded friend. Banters, teasing, etc... Genre canbe anything

BUT

Not romance! I don't mind some, if it's a subplot and it's not forced, but I'd prefer frindship.

Bonus, if the the overall tone and sense of humour is also similar to DCC.

I'm past Hitchhiker's guide and I am yet to read Discworld, but it's so overwhelmingly long series 😃.

TY

Reading Rut: Looking for Fast Paced Books to Get Me Back Into Reading!

• Upvotes

Hi all. I'm stuck in a bit of a reading rut at the moment after a run of 2/3 star reads. I'm looking for some fast-paced/gripping books that I can fly through to get me back into reading.

I've just finished Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy and wanted to love it, but don't think lit-fic is for me (also didn't enjoy Such a Fun Age and Zikora).

My top rated books are:

  • The Things We Leave Unfinished by Rebecca Yarros
  • It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey
  • The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren
  • The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
  • The Selection series by Kiera Cass
  • None of This is True by Lisa Jewell
  • Playing Nice by JP Delaney
  • Shipped by Angie Hockman

Wildcards I enjoyed:

  • The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba by Chanel Cleeton
  • Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey
  • The Seven Year Slip & The Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston (I love most of Ashley Poston but I found The Someday Garden very slow)
  • The House on Tradd Street by Karen White
  • The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna
  • The Many Lives of Heloise Starchild by John Ironmonger

My lowest rated books are cosy crime (I've rated every DI Ruth Hunter book that I've read 2 stars, but that was potentially because they were "based" near me and geographically very inaccurate), Girl, Serpent Thorn (don't know if this was the YA or the fantasy that had it ranked so low) or literary or issues-led fiction that felt slow (Such a Fun Age, Zikora). I will also DNF books with heavy slang.

My reading habits:

  • I love finishing a series and will happily plough through the whole thing if I'm enjoying it (The Hunger Games, Elsie Silvers entire back catalog was read in one go, The Selection).
  • Fast-paced books.
  • Books with twists.
  • Medium heat in romance.

What I'm looking for:

  • I'm honestly open to anything to get me out of my rut.
  • I haven't picked up a romance in a while, but am not against any new recommendations.
  • I like the idea of light fantasy (I love Ashley Poston & The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches), but haven't dived any deeper into fantasy (I have tried ACOTAR/Forth Wing, but would rather my fantasy not have smut. I love watching LOTR but have never read anything similar.
  • Anything fast paced, with a strong hook or twists. I love high-tension and chapter cliff hangers in the book that are resolved by the end.
  • I love real-world stories and small town books (but not Hallmark predictable stories). My other interests include wildlife/conservation and cycling, if anything could fit in with that!

Thanks so much!

Hi, I’m looking for any good horror books and romance books. Any horror will do as long as it’s interesting while romance I’d like it to be relationship building and less smut.

Need tales of supernatural exploration.

I absolutely love the mystery in the sub genre of exploring supernatural spaces and attempting to chart them: the dark continent from the manga Hunter X Hunter, the backrooms, the audio drama fathom, some parts of the Terror by Dan Simmons, etc.

I’m looking for books that have this trope in them, if they fall into horror all the better for it. Please help me on my quest thanks!

Looking for a book to read while searching for meaning in my life

I’m a 20 something post grad who feels incredibly lost and without purpose. Currently in the job search which is going fine but I kind of feel like I’m telling myself that things will be better after I find a job and meet some more people through that. I have friends, and while they do tell me they love me every once in a while, it doesn’t really feel like I have a lot of love in my life. I definitely spend to much time on TikTok and Reels as well.

I want a book that navigates loneliness, apathy, love, and belonging. I think of myself as fairly analytically minded, which I like, but I also feel like there’s a part of me that yearns for art and beauty which needs to be fed. I’ve done some looking and came across Why Fish Don’t Exist by Lulu Miller and The Myth of Sisyphus by Camus on another thread. Open to any suggestions (no self help stuff though). Thank you.

Romance Need a contemporary romance that'll be a home run after 3 bad pickups

Hi there! Really need some recs. I've tried looking all over and feel like every suggestion online isn't fitting the bill.

I want a feel-good book. Obviously we know the characters will get together in the end, whatever. Its an escape from life for me.

Books I've read recently that I've liked: P.S. I hate you, The Unhoneymooners, Problematic Summer Romance (but only after reading Not In Love which on it's own was whatever). (Honorable mentions: Verity and The Silent Patient although right now i'm looking for contemporary romance)

Would like to avoid: rape, death, pregnancy, main characters with kids, abuse.

Recently i've tried reading Stinger (DNF'd) and forced myself to finish It Happened One Summer but couldn't wait to finish it.

I love a spicy read but at this moment I am looking for plot over spice (although would love a good rec if you have it I just know that usually cuts out some suggestions)

I also enjoy dual perspective but also not a must as to avoid cutting out good recs

Think "what is my all time favorite contemporary romance." I need a home run after my past couple of bad reads have been quite a let down.

Former voracious child reader / new adult reader Fantasy Books Like Hades (The Game)?

Hello!

I got back into reading this year after not seriously reading any books since I was a teenager. In the last few years I’ve completed maybe 10 books combined, all on Audible - and this year so far I’ve finished 33 books that I’ve actually been taking the time to sit down and read!

(No disrespect to audiobooks btw I still love them! I’ve just come to really appreciate how sitting down to read forces me to focus on one thing.)

Anyway I’m looking for books about Greek mythology: retellings of myths, fun spins on the genre, Hades is one of my favorite games of all time and that’s in large part because of the characters. Anything that really goes into the pantheon of gods, their relationships and their moral ambiguity would be super cool! Bonus points if everyone’s hot and/or queer.

I read Song of Achilles this year and it was one of my favorite books of my excursion back into reading. Thanks for helping an ex-voracious reader get back into the practice!!

Looking for postpartum novel recs

I'm in my third trimester now, and man am I tired. I had to give up on The Adventures of Augie March recently, which is a book that would normally be right in my wheelhouse but my hormone-addled, sleep-deprived brain couldn't keep track of all the unspooling threads. I'm hoping to have a nice list of well-written but ultimately pretty easy books lined up for the rest of my pregnancy and postpartum period.

I'm looking for:

- novels

- literature/classics are great, but more Cat's Cradle than Bleak House

- I love a coming of age story

- mysteries and thrillers are fun, but I'm not a fan of sci fi, romance, or most other genre fiction

- in general, something that's fairly fast-paced, engaging, and not tough to follow on three hours of sleep

Book For Healing From An Amicable Breakup

Had a 6+ year relationship/engagement end very recently and trying to find different ways to manage. Relationship ended mutually, on really good terms all things considered but I’m struggling big time. Been reading different things on the web and think a book would help. Wanting books that talk about heartache and breakups that don’t bash the ex in any way, or about getting back at them or anything like that. Any recommendation is appreciated. Thank you.

Any genre! A conman fakes their way into actually growing/becoming a good person

Inspired by a recent post on r/TopCharacterTropes because I absolutely love love love this trope and now need more, and the only books I saw mentioned were Going Postal (which I've read) and the manga Silver Mountain. I've also mostly encountered this trope in shows and movies and would love to find more examples in books!

Best examples: Going Postal, Klaus, Rango

Bonus for the conman growing as a person and becoming better being the character's main journey/a big focus!

Book Club ISO Books Lighthearted but still memorable literature-book club

Been in a very long term book club (7+ years), and have had a string of dark books lately. So looking for something GREAT but less dark.

We're a diverse, but highly educated group that loves books that start a good conversation. Group likes literature, sci fi, fantasy, pretty much anything except non fiction and romance.

Triggers-no animal death, no extreme violence (although we did read McCarthy and lost a few members on that one).

Rules-no one can have read it already and it should be under 450 pages. Prefer no series

Favorites include

A Gentleman in Moscow

Klara and the Sun

Ubik

Read

Project Hail Mary

Dungeon crawler carl

This is how you lose the time war

Litfic/Historical Fic Recs?‼️

Hi! Obviously here looking for some recommendations… I’ve really been into literary fiction, sometimes historical fiction, deep, character driven stories. I love sad, emotional stories that make you feel and think deeply about yourself & the world! I’m not super into romance, especially heterosexual romance but I can and do tolerate it for a good plot! Mostly interested in stories centering women!!!

Some all time favorites that fit a vibe I’m looking for:
1. All Kristin Hannah, but especially The Nightingale, Firefly Lane, and The Great Alone
2. The Bright Years (omg…. This one)
3. Almost Life
4. The Neopolitan Novels
5. My Friends & the Beartown Trilogy by Fredrick Backman
6. The God of the Woods
7. Sunburn
8. Atmosphere
9. The Frozen River !! Incredible
10. The Things We Cannot Say

Lastly, I’m currently 200 pages into A Thousand Splendid Suns and LOVING it btw! Okay go crazy

Mystery A runner looking for suggestions

Hello all!

As the title suggests I am a runner looking for any audio book suggestions. I have a half marathon in three weeks and have gone through all my podcast options (you’re wrong about, good hang, IBCK, lonely island).

For my last half marathon, I burned through the housemaid series and a lighter autumnal book - the very secret society of irregular witches. I am always keen on suggestions for books that will keep me spellbound and would love any and all ideas. I love to be transported for the run and my “me” time.

Children’s Books Weird Kids NonFiction

I am so excited by this opportunity. My nephew is 5 and has a growing interest in weird medical stuff after his dad told him that people can have half their brain removed.

I had a weird obsession with the book Broken Arrow Boy when I was in elementary school (late 80s).

I’m looking for weird but true medical books or history books for kids. I have permission! It’s like a golden ticket! However, I don’t have kids and don’t know what’s out in the world these days.

Any recommendations? I always have an 8 year old niece who would probably be really entertained by this too.

Looking For Adult Survival Fiction

As a kid I was all about those survival books: Hatchet (really anything Gary Paulsen,) My Side of the Mountain, Julie of the Wolves, Island of the Blue Dolphins... you get the idea. It felt like this magical, robust genre.

I recently got a hankering to read something like that again, and while I have nothing against rereading kids books, I was hoping to find something more adult. I haven't been able to find anything that's really recapturing that feeling.

So, give me your best survival stories. I'm talking woods, islands, deserts, whatever you've got. I want the protagonist struggling to build a fire and trying to figure out which berries are edible.

Thanks for any help you can offer!

A book with flirty banter

I am looking for a book with intelligent characters flirting with each other. Good dialogue is a must. Preferably modern/contemporary (written since 1960ish). I’d like the book to lean toward fun, but not necessarily a full on comedy. Not looking for a traumatic divorce narrative or something, unless the dialogue is exemplary.

This request is way outside my normal wheelhouse so I can’t really offer any examples of what I mean. I’m writing a story in which two characters flirt and banter with each other and right now the flirtation is really bad. Looking for something with good, flirtatious conversation to help get the inspiration going.

Action / Adventure Looking for epic adventure books

Hi ya'll I was hoping for some recommendations on adventure fantasy books. Some that I love: LOTR, Dune, The Child Thief, Mist Born, The Pellinnor series. I don't need it to be a specific gender MC though I do love a well written female lead. I am not into romance being the main driving plot though I do love Walking Drum which absolutely has romance woven into the plot. I am open to stand alone and series books. I would love some international options though I do have to read it in English. I am studying Spanish but at this time Harry Potter is my max capability level right now.
