Any genre! Books where main character(s) are going through major life crises, crashing out, dealing with brutal philosophical realities?
Looking for a gripping, brutal look into the psyche of a character crashing out

Many of Fredrik Backman's novels have MCs going through crises. My Friends, A Man Called Ove, Britt-Marie was Here and Beartown all would fit.

Cruddy, by Lynda Barry
A coming of age story that’s “part Easy Rider and part Wizard of Oz” (goodreads)… it’s really funny and dark. I read it 25 years ago and there are scenes and dialogue that are now core memories.

"What the Last Dodo Thinks" is the only one that comes to mind. Quite a ride.

Sounds interesting, philosophical, and very relevant to today’s social climate! Thanks for the rec

We’ll All Be Burnt in Our Beds Some Night by Joel Thomas Hynes is about a young, violent, stupid guy with an abusive childhood going on a hitchhiking trip across Canada to scatter his ex-girlfriend’s ashes on the west coast.
The book is one long stream of consciousness crash out.

The Secret World of Briar Rose by Cindy Pham (despite the title, this is not a romantasy)
Taipei Story by R.F. Kuang (no, this is quite different from her other books)
We Burned So Bright by T.J. Klune
