MODERATOR POST | منشورة إدارية Call for r/Sudan moderators
Salaam everyone,
As you well know, our sub has grown quite a bit in the last several years. We recently reached the 34K mark and our members are remarkably diverse in terms of age, country of residence, and interests. Undoubtedly, the ongoing war has dominated the topics of discussion but it's no surprise given how much it has impacted all of us.
With this growth, we now have a much broader range of perspectives and worldviews. We have had many healthy discussions but sometimes they can get quite heated. Our mod team has been working hard to ensure that the discourse here is within the bounds of civility and mutual respect, and that the topics are relevant to Sudan and the Sudanese people, regardless of where they are.
But with this growth, the burden of moderating the sub has become overwhelming for our team, who are all volunteers with real-life responsibilities and grappling with the effects of the war. So on behalf of the team, I wanted to invite those who interested in serving as mods to nominate themselves to join the mod team.
We are looking for 2-3 mods who meet these criteria:
- At least 1 year active on Reddit and r/Sudan to ensure that they are familiar with the sub rules and culture, and the rules of Reddit at large (Reddiquette).
- High quality contributions and engagement.
- Adherence to the sub rules, particularly the rules about civility and mutual respect, and no bigotry and discrimination.
- Proficiency in both English and Arabic is important given that this is a bilingual sub.
Mods are expected engage regularly with the Mod Queue (e.g., approve posts, remove spam, respond to mod reports, etc.); be fair and transparent with our users; and continue to contribute to the sub as much as they're able to. We welcome candidates who are able to inject fresh ideas and initiatives to meet the evolving needs of our growing community.
If you are interested, please DM the Mod Team to express your interest and provide a brief bio about yourself (you do not need to break your anonymity). Use this thread if you have any questions about serving as a moderator or the process.

Is it wrong to have such high standards for who I want to marry?
I'm female and in my mid 20s living abroad. I come from an upper middle class family (by western standards) and I guess upper class by Sudanese standards. My family has lived in the West, the gulf and Sudan and have higher education and great jobs. One of my parents grew up very wealthy but lost their wealth when they were young due to some family disputes, but made it again after marrying my other parent. I'm not sure if this is significant but we have a known name/lineage in one of my parents' parents side of the family.
I genuinely cannot see myself marrying an average Sudanese man. I just can't see it. I had a very different lifestyle to most in Sudan and I can't do household chores or labor since that was all taken care of and until I moved abroad some years ago I had never used public transport before since we had drivers or one of my family members would drop me off wherever. I also have experiences, stories and know people that the average person cannot relate to so I'd feel uncomfortable meeting someone who would be shocked by those stories or who would perceive them differently.
I do NOT want someone who isn't Sudanese for a plethora of reasons that I don't want to get into. I really only would want a Sudanese man who is very particular. My issue is that I have distanced myself from all of them on the basis of morals and values. My family told me that I shouldn't befriend gahata, keizan or any of the shitty upper class people too deeply and I took that seriously. I also found them insufferable because corruption is just foul when you see it firsthand. On the other hand, my family didn't live by those values and did a lot of shit and so now I feel duped that I was told to not make certain connections with my peers and the only people who would be able to relate to my life. So idk what to do... Will I find such a person? I've actually never wanted to marry until recently because I realized I'd rather have someone who gets those experiences and who honestly can advance my life from above average to extraordinary if at all possible...
I will also say I'm not highly attractive by Sudanese standards but I look slightly better than average. Other than that my education, hobbies, some connections I made abroad and other skill sets are what I have going for me and what I'd want in a Sudanese partner. Not sure if what I'm demanding is too much but I'm curious what others think because I'm wondering if I should just keep going how I initially planned my life and that is to not worry about these things and just advance my own life and live alone.

Electives and observeships for med students
Hey guys Has anyone here done a medical elective or observership abroad? If so,which country did you go to and how was your experience?
I’m looking for a country where it’s relatively easy to get accepted and where I can gain good clinical experience and actually learn something useful.
Also, I’m curious about everyone’s plans after med school. What are you guys thinking of doing after graduation, and which path are you planning to take? Are you considering residency abroad, and if so, which countries are you looking into?

CULTURE & HISTORY | الثقافة والتاريخ Does anyone know the origins of the الحجراب (Hagarab) lineage in Sudan?
I'm Sudanese, and my family is originally from Al Jazirah. We belong to a large lineage known as الحجراب (Hagarab), and many people associated with it use حجر as their surname.
There's an oral story in my family that our ancestor, Hagar, was a farmer who supposedly used witchcraft to make British colonialists believe his farmland was stone (حجر). I don't know how historically accurate this story is or whether it's commonly told between other Hagarab.
I've encountered people with this lineage or surname in many different places, so I'm curious whether الحجراب are considered a tribe, a clan, or a large extended family, and what their historical origins and branches might be.
Does anyone recognize this lineage or know of any reliable genealogical sources, books, or family histories that discuss it? I'd especially appreciate information about its origins and historical distribution.

Why is criticizing your own side treated as betrayal? A question about Sudan and collective identity
Sudan has gone through multiple long and devastating civil wars, yet we keep repeating the same patterns.
When our side kills civilians, we cheer. When the other side does it, they're barbarians. Our side are the angels, the other side is the devil. And if we criticize our own side, we're accused of being traitors.
I've been reading about collective narcissism, the idea that people become so invested in their group's image that admitting its wrongdoing feels like an attack on their identity.
But if we condemn an act only when our enemies commit it, do we actually stand for a principle, or are we just defending our group?
How can Sudan ever break this cycle if loyalty matters more than accountability?
I'd like to hear from Sudanese people and others who've seen similar patterns in their own societies.
