Example prompts to answer to hit the character minimum:

    Who would use this ability?

Why would this move be used on X Pokemon?

    What Pokemon counters this?

How would this Theorymon impact the top 5 used Pokemon in OU?

Theorymon Thursday Mega Garchomp Z has now Sheer Force instead of Levitate. How much will this affect its viability?

Post image
123 Upvotes

OK OK OK

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE THINKING

LIZARD WHY ARE YOU BUFFING MEGA ZOMP???

Looks, it's not really a buff overall, I just wanna know how Garchomp Z can be good with a different (hopefully better) Ability.

It might sounds a bit broken, but hear me out:

-There are no Dragon type moves with secondary effects (except Dragon Breath but I think it's not in the game, and besides, who would even run that over Dragon Pulse or Draco Meteor).

-It can't hold a Life Orb to freely boost its damage output.

-It can allow Garchomp Z to get use of its very high Attack and deal significant damage with moves like Rock Slide, Iron Head and Poison Jab, as well as getting that extra damage on special moves such as Earth Power and Flamethrower.

I'm not 100% sure if we need a better ability for one of the Top 5 Megas rn, but it's still better than Levitate, right?

Theorymon Thursday Protean/Libero should reactivate if the selected move matches the user's original type

Would unnerf those Abilities without fully making the user unpredictable.

It would let Greninja turn back into a Water or Dark type, Cinderace turn back into a Fire type, and Meowscarada turn back into a Grass or Dark type. Would also let the dual types cycle between their base types, whereas the mono types would still be able to spam their main STAB without using up Protean or Libero.

Examples:

Greninja using STAB Ice Beam before using Dark Pulse to become a Dark type again.

Cinderace using Protect/Court Change before reverting to its Fire type to use Pyro Ball.

Meowscarada using STAB Triple Axle before using Flower Trick to become Grass type again.

This would make Protean/Libero strong again, no longer having to worry about getting stuck on the wrong type. Despite that, it would be quite balanced as you'd know the exact types your opponent can switch to, even in Closed Team Sheets.

Theorymon Thursday New Terrain Setters

Post image
37 Upvotes

These were much harder to do than the new Weather setters since there's minimal lore that can imply of them being capable of doing such feats. So I'm just shooting from the hip and replacing some of their default abilities or their hidden abilities. Once again, I don't play competitive so I don't know how broken or underwhelming these changes can be.

Electric Surge for Zekrom and Ampharos can help with their damage output, provide good support for the Future Paradox Pokemon and synergy with some Rain teams

Misty Surge for Wigglytuff and Aromatisse for more utility. These two have been left in the dust for well over a decade now.

Grassy Surge for Lilligant and Trevenant can be more support focused compared to Rillaboom. They deserve something better than Frisk and Leaf Guard

Psychic Surge for Grumpig and Gothitelle for general quality of life update and boost their defense profile. They won't be Expanding Force spammers but are slower than Indeedee

Theorymon Thursday Some new moves that I feel will be interesting new picks

Thumbnail
gallery
65 Upvotes

A lot of the move distribution I based it on mons who can realistically learn these, not just giving them out to mons to buff them. Let me explain:

  1. Screen Smash - my answer to inaccurate rock moves with wider distribution. It's a rock slide option without the flinch but also without the inaccuracy. IMO this isn't broken but i feel like it's a welcome addition.
  2. Heat Treatment - Mystical Fire just doesn't cut it for me. I need a bit more oomf. This is extremely niche in singles though, you can literally use flamethrower, it's the better option. In doubles it's a nice clutch coverage for gard, Flash fire effect still in play so it doesn't heal your flash fire ally. My interesting niche with this is doubles magmar with eviolite and follow me support plus this.
  3. Shock Therapy - An answer to no physical electric moves. It's physical so a lot of the learners are physical + the ones who learn heal pulse. Same with magmar, i like a doubles eviolite electabuzz follow me + this move. the good electric types have an option to use this if they don't wanna use volt tackle/zing zap/supercell slam.
  4. Powder Storm - yk like a dust storm? anyways. Bug type hurricane. I nerfed hurricane's confuse chance for this move to 20 because sleep is broken.
  5. Iron Brand - scald but physical, it's mostly on bad mons though! so it gives them some use.
  6. Spirit Siphon - Ghost type giga drain. It's pretty inoffensive. You have to choose between the stronger shadow ball or this slightly weaker semi utility move.
  7. Triple Breath - inspired by the greek legend of the hydra, i feel like there should've been a move for these mons to hit three times and have consistent multi hit damage ala twin beam, surging strikes. I feel like it's fair enough maybe slightly broken because of the random effect but it's limited distribution so that's at least keeping the move from being spammable by many. Edit: 10% proc per hit so 30% if all three hits connect, not 30% chance per hit.

Open to suggestions and opinions : )

Theorymon Thursday Presenting my Regional Simipour. Designed for Lower Tiers, how would it fair?

Post image
19 Upvotes

Now as I mentioned in Post Title, this is not a mon that could be great at OU, UU or maybe even RU. This is a mon that is very much intended to be a "better" Simipour. So let's talk about the mon.

Stats: Identical to all other Elemental Monkeys. It has all around meh stat but with decent Speed.

Typing: It is Grass/Fire Type. This typing does allow it to hit almost all typing at least neutrally which is great with it's Signature Move. Not the best defensively but it's not surviving much hits with its bulk anyways.

Moveset: It gains all the moves of Simisage and Simisear. It won't get the OG Simipour exclusive moves.

Signature Ability: A combination of Blaze and Overgrow. Could potentially help land some revenge kills.

Signature Move: The main feature of this mon. The move deals either Fire Damage or Grass Damage depending on the opponent it was used against. So for a Rock Type Mon, it deals Grass Damage but for Flying Type Mon, it deals Fire Damage. If the opponent takes Neutral Damage from both types then it becomes Grass Type Move. The move also accounts for immunity either by Type or by Ability.

So what do you guys think of it?

Mom (and all mega Grafaiai) probably be RU or UUBI. It's great 125 attack and decent 110 special Attack can be a decent mix attacker to hit hard and stop annoying strats like Follow Me Indeedee, or Prankster Sableye and Whimiscott, Trick Room Frarigiraf or Toxic, Baneful Bunker Toxapex or Parting Shot Incineroar. Plus with good stab moves like Posion Jab, Sluge Bomb, Tri Attack, Double Edge, And Gunk Shot. As well as coverage like U turn, Knock Off, Seed Bomb, Low Swep, and First Impression, she (and any other Graffaiai) can really get out of hand. Plus she also has great 130 speed being faster then most Mon and on pair with Snesler. That speed also helps with of her other great status moves like Parting Shot, Sword Dance, Nastly Plot, Light Screen, toxic and Doodle or mimic.

Og Artist Mega Noctowl https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonZA/comments/1juej71/mega_noctowl_oc/
Copied text

Probably going to UUB| Or Ou Rank. I mean this guys essentially has 232 to 324 special attack depending on the stat distribution which is insane.
Pair it up with new stab Psyhic moves and good coverage too it can be a beast. And it's bulk is pretty good with 100 hp 90 Defense and 116 special Defense and reliable healing with Roost. It also can set up it's okay 100 speed to be better with Tailwind or Agility. It even set up with Calm Mind or Nasty Plot to boost its insane special Attack even more. Plus it moves it get is good like Psychic, Psychic Noise, Stored Power, Future Sight, Hurricane (in the rain) and Air Slash. It weird also get a lot of good coverage with Shadow ball, Moonblast, and it's now non stab Hyper Beam and Hyper Voice. So yeah this guys is pretty stack. But being weak to pretty Relvant Mon like Kingambit, Incineroar, Basculegion, and the Mega Raichu might hinder it.

I.e physical-special split, new types being added, nerfing a pokemon or buffing a move.

I’m new, so I’d like if you could explain why it is so good or so bad as well!

Theorymon Thursday Mega Evolution Concept: Mega Snorlax

Post image
10 Upvotes

(Image Credit to Atlas-Divide on DeviantArt)

Atlas-Divide

Hello and welcome, today we have an interesting concept for a Mega Evolution.

The big fun roadblock of the original 151, Snorlax.

Even though it already has a super form in the form of Gigantamax, so does Charizard, and he got two Megas. So why not Snorlax? It’s a very popular Pokémon for game playthrough (although it’s struggled in Competitive, being ZU in Generation 9) which is a darn shame. Personally I have had pretty decent success with Snorlax in my local tourneys and battle circuits in my friend group.

So why is it not used more? It’s not a bad Pokémon by any means, and it has great potential.

But enough quibbling about use and history. Onto the stats~

(For a fun mini game, take a sip of your drink of choice for every synonym of big or mention of how large Snorlax is in this post. Please do not inebriate yourself.)

Snorlax

Type: Normal

Hp: 160

Attack: 110

Defense: 65

Special Attack: 65

Special Defense: 110

Speed: 30

BST: 540

Ability: Thick Fat/Immunity
Hidden Ability: Gluttony

(+1) Snorlax’s stats are still impressive 30 years after Gen 1. With an immense hp stat of 160, Snorlax is a beefy boy. Offense wise Snorlax has an attack stat of 110, which is great. A real standout is Special defense of 110 as well, making it pretty tough to break through with Special Attacks.

(+2) Being a Normal type, Snorlax gets access to an enormous Movepool with many strong options for both offense, defense, and support. Strong STAB in Body Slam can deal some great damage, and the high paralysis chance can potentially cripple the opponent.

For the nuclear option, Snorlax gets Double Edge and for even more nuke, STAB Giga Impact. (We miss you Return, we miss you so much) In terms of boosting moves, Snorlax has the devastating Belly Drum, maxing out its attack and thanks to still having a massive hp stat, it’s not too much of a cost. Curse is also an option, which can boost Snorlax’s attack and less than stellar defense to acceptable levels.

For your disruption and support options, Snorlax gets Yawn, which can force switches and let it set up Belly Drum or Curse safely. Snorlax can also use Rest to fully heal itself and can even sometimes survive the two turns it’s asleep for. Amnesia can buff Snorlax’s special defense to great levels.

Coverage wise, Snorlax has a smorgasbord of moves, such as Earthquake, Darkest Lariat, Hammer Arm, Drain Punch, Gunk Shot, the Elemental Punches, Heat Crash, Seed Bomb, Iron Head… I could go on but we might be here most of the day.

(+3) Snorlax’s abilities do tie in to its beefiness. Thick Fat cuts the damage of Fire and Ice moves, giving it a pseudo resistance to those moves. Immunity giving it immunity to Poison can stop Toxic and Toxic Spikes from hurting you. Meanwhile, Gluttony can let Snorlax use berries well.

(+4) Snorlax has a good amount of Item options, but most of the time it sticks with the tried and tested Leftovers, giving it slight recovery. It can run Sitrus Berry for a good chunk of its hp back, or if you want ridiculous offense out the gate, Choice Band can torque Snorlax’s attack up to very high levels without the hp cut of Belly Drum. (I run Choice Band Snorlax occasionally on my Trick Room Team)

However, This big guy suffers from several issues.

(-1) Snorlax’s speed is fittingly very low, only really getting to attack last, meaning it might lose too much Hp to use Belly Drum. It’s Physical Defense is also low at 65, and while it can boost it with Curse, it takes at least two uses to get defense up to acceptable levels.

(-2) Snorlax’s reliance on Rest and Leftovers to stay healthy leaves it very vulnerable to being knocked out before it wakes up. Yawn can help force opponents to switch out.

(-3) Snorlax really hopes that Paralysis to connect with Body Slam so It could potentially have some safety to set up.

(-4) Belly Drum going off effectively means Snorlax starts a fight at 1/2 health. This can blow up in your face.

Now a Mega Evolution probably isn’t that needed here, but I would love one just to see how I could create one. Who knows? It might turn into the beefy big boy that probably won’t stay down.

Mega Snorlax

Type: Normal

Hp: 160

Attack: 150

Defense: 75

Special Attack: 75

Special Defense: 150

Speed: 30

BST: 640

Ability: Fur Coat

Explanation: Yeesh, talk about bulky. Mega Snorlax main weaknesses has been its Physical Defense and Speed, and while I really don’t think he can use much speed (Trick Room Teams are still pretty competent) he should get something to help patch up the physical defense issue. I chose Fur Coat specifically to help with that, and Mega Snorlax still only has 75 Physical Defense. However this does buff it considerably in practice, as Fur Coat halves damage from Physical moves.

Mega Snorlax’s other stand outs include a far better attack stat and special Defense stat of 150, meaning Belly Drum sets (while still effectively starting at 1/2 health) hit significantly harder and Mega Snorlax’s special defense can now eat several powerful special attacks. Thanks to its Normal typing letting most things hit for neutral, Mega Snorlax now is a serious threat that would need Fighting types with powerful physical STAB or even a big boost to break it.

Mega Snorlax is meant to serve as a tank, sponging huge hits while also hitting back incredibly hard. Opportunity cost really depends on what you want, I don’t believe it would have that big of a niche in this hyper fast Meta right now. Trick Room would turn it into a monster for sure.

Is this Busted? Maybe. However I still think Mega Snorlax has answers, especially things like physically bulky or Choice Band Great Tusk that can bash Snorlax with boosted Close Combat. Fast Fighting type Megas could also blast through and manage to revenge kill it once it uses Belly Drum.

But what do you think the comments below and constructive criticism if you want to, I’m always opened to learn more. Heck, give me some trick room sets for this just so I could see how it would measure up right now.

Thank you and have a great day!

Theorymon Thursday Goodra Buffs Part 2 and Buffs to the Bug Type

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

So after last week's attempts to buff Goodra were poorly received I decided to try again. I decided to also buff the Bug type while I was at it giving it more of a utility focus by preventing it from being confused or taunted as well as a quasi-soundproof. For Goodra I decided to actually give it the long requested Bug/Dragon type as well as Recover and Strength Sap for HP recovery and Struggle Bug, Infestation, Pounce, Lunge and U-Turn for STAB for its new Bug Typing. I also changed Sap Siper for Poison Heal as it now quad resists Grass as well as replacing Gooey with Regenerator which pairs with U-Turn to make it a Pivot.

Theorymon Thursday Some more miscellaneous ideas for older Pokémon/Forms

Thumbnail
gallery
28 Upvotes

I thought OG Mega Absol deserved something now that Absol-Z exists. I think it would be fitting to tack the Fairy type on and make Absol-M represent benevolence while Absol-Z is clearly more focused on the Death motif. Magic Bounce also always felt like a strange ability choice for Absol-M to be honest, and also the fact it didnt get the Fairy type is weird given its obvious connection to mythology and angels in general.

The idea for Altaria-M honestly came as I was using it in Champions. There were many times I wanted to be running a single move like hyper voice or double edge in the base form to get value out of its support moveset and Cloud Nine, but that makes it basically useless damage-wise unless you choose to mega evolve it to get access to Pixilate. Transpose may be busted considering you now get a Fairy type Draco Meteor and Dragon type Moonblast, but I think its conceptually interesting enough to include and I'd love to see how strong it would be in practice

Theorymon Thursday Week 66 of making a randomly generated Mega, and this time we're going back to full willpower, fast and furious.

Thumbnail
gallery
4 Upvotes

Analysis copied here:

This one's a bit basic this time, but Mega Azelf takes on a real being of willpower here and gets 150 in both its offenses, a small boost in both defenses and a massive boost in speed where it reaches over even Dragapult. It also gets a new ability that functions similar to Anger Shell, where it gets a 2x boost to Attack and Special Attack if it reaches below 33%, which can be catastrophic if they manage to get in that situation, especially combined with moves like Stored Power, Mystical Power, which can also be combined with the massive speed, coverage options and support, and as a result, Mega Azelf is a very good contender for your Mega slot in OU.

Theorymon Thursday Part 15 of buffing random Pokemon without going the route of boosting their stats or introducing original abilities or moves. How they struggle, where they lack, and what can we do to fix them: Cacturne!

Post image
19 Upvotes

In doing research, I came to the conclusion that there are no Grass type Sand Rushers (or Sand Rushers with decent Grass offense). Since one of sand's biggest weaknesses will always be Water, I figured Cacturne really does fill a proper niche. It was between Sand Rush and Storm Drain for ability changes, but I figured on moving my resoning for Storm Drain into giving it Strength Sap. Also Cacturne is really cool. I like Cacturne. Desert stalker cactus scarecrow, c'mon man. That's awesome.

As per usual, I welcome all commentary or constructive criticism on these, anything helps. If you want to see your favorite Pokemon get a bit of love, comment below and I'll try to make the top comment a reality!

Theorymon Thursday Giving certain signature moves to Lugia and Ho-oh

Thumbnail
gallery
9 Upvotes

Remember, these are Restricted Pokemon.

Lugia gets:

Bleakwind Storm: First off, let's go with the most fitting move for Lugia.... which it doesn't currently learn, for some reason. Yes, I know it's Tornadus's move, but Lugia fits the whole "powerful wind attack" theme much better than Tornadus.

Electro Shot: While Lugia's stormy motif is normally related to just the wind, I don't think it'd be a huge stretch for it to have an Electric attack either. Besides, Lugia's SpA stat is way too mediocre for a Restricted Legend. It needs a way to quickly boost up.

Psycho Boost: And finally, to showcase Lugia's destructive nature, we have Psycho Boost as its last buff. It pairs well with Electro Shot, and will make Lugia a force to be reckoned with (especially in dual Restricted formats so it can pair with Kyogre).

Ho-oh gets:

Revival Blessing: Firstly, no, I'm not insane. Secondly, the Revival Chicken needs Revival Blessing. And let's be honest, it's a great move, but it won't make Ho-oh broken. With threats like Kyogre, Miraidon, and Shadow Rider running around, Ho-oh getting this buff would let it keep up, but would not let it surpass them in the slightest. You'd have to choose whether your Restricted slot goes to a powerful support Pokemon or a powerful sweeper.

Theorymon Thursday Mega Zapdos be: Art By Justsomefandomfan

Post image
9 Upvotes

Type: Electric/Dark

Ability: Storm Cloak

HP: 80

Attack: 85

Defense: 115

Sp. Atk: 150

Sp. Def:  115

Speed: 135

Total: 680

When entering the battlefield, electric terrain is set, alongside boosting the highest stat; if terrain ends or is set on opposing side, highest stat is boosted again

My take on a Mega version n of Zapdos on being very fast and strong hitting mon hyper lethality but also being a new type of darm that needs player to use their head to tactical plant them or almost certain get OHKO

The numbers on the stats might not ve correct since I don't exactly know they are build but I'm hoping that this would have been hypothetical a viable pokemon but still love to hear your thoughts cheers

Discussion PKMN Arena - Somewhere VGC bots can battle

Hi folks!

Following the recent surge of bots for VGC on showdown, I created https://vgc.ellep.dev/ for VGC bots to battle against each other and compete on a bot only ladder.

The goal of this is to create a healthy competition between bot creators and hopefully disincentivize bots playing on the actual ladder (we already know they can reach #1, so lets compare them between each other instead of in the human ladder).

If you are a bot creator and want your bot in there, point your favorite LLM coding tool to http://vgc.ellep.dev/llms.txt.

I'm planning on iterating and improving on this so feedback is welcome.

Theorymon Thursday 8 new move ideas

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

Perish bell is a good way to put pressure on opposition and can be a great for the few Pokemon that get it

Moon breeze is just a good simple healing move that also gives some Pokemon a good consistent special flying move

Super fist flurry was made as both as a good fighting type multi hit move and as sort of a reverse psyshock

Urgent care might be a bit overkill because it makes each of its users Really hard to get off the field

Super sting was a cool idea for a really powerful bug type move

Spectral power was mostly made as a way to give some ghost type physical attackers access to a move consistent option then poltergeist

Crystal shield was just made as a cool protect move that could help with bulky Pokemon having better survival

Soft press was mainly made to give Pokemon with cotton guard access to body press

Theorymon Thursday Sceptile new ability and move

Post image
2 Upvotes

Sceptile in its mega is known for launching its tail, base Sceptile has shed tail.

New move Tail Launcher, 120 base power special attack lowers both defense, and special defense

New ability Sutotomy, when Sceptile is hit with a damaging move it'll put up a substitute (once, and it does cost hp just like the move substitute)

Sceptile can't take hits, but it can swap in on water moves with Absorb Bulb making this strong.

This can also be used to get a clean set up, mega evolve, etc.

Sceptile now won't face strict or unwinnable competition from the bipedal magician cat, and will have his own pro's and cons, his mega is also more rewarding if you wanna go with a swords dance set as you set up freely now.

It also is great for his other abilities since they don't know which one you have, you could end up outspeed everyone when absorb bulb switch into a water move, or switching in substitute, and mega evolving and setting up.

You also can hit immediately hard off rip with a stab move, that pairs well with focus miss.

Khalamari - A bulky set up sweeper who can set up on the Phazer of the world due to the fact Suction Cups means it can be forced out via Dragon Tail. Alternatively it can be a bulky-ish spinner who can't have its Boots knocked thanks to Sticky Hold, and thanks to the fact it learns Flamethrower it can't be Spin Blocked by Ghold.

Estark - A Pokémon with a mascot legend BST, a great attacking type in Dark/Fighting, and a great ability that it can't activate due to a lack of rest, meaning you gotta switch it into a Sleep user. Without sleep though it can still do things hitting the Steels of the world, especially Treads and Excadrill thanks to Matter Scatter.

Drakularge - Another set up sweeper but this one leverages the advantages of Sleep Twitch on its own thanks to the fact it learns Rest (and would probably wanna run it anyways), you do struggle with Clefable however but as long as that's dealt with you should be fine thanks to the boost from Sleep Twitch.

Anchorman - Slow wallbreaker with a 200 Base Power STAB move with Steelworker to nuke all the Fairies with, great partner for Drakularge.

Rocky Box Slime - Fast mon that hits everything in the tier for Neutral Damage at least and has the nice option of Poison coverage to hit Grass and Fairies. You also have Priority with Accelrock which is STAB and can hit a Zapdos or Moltres that comes in for good damage.

Phoenix Melody deals damage and has 30% chance of the user causing either Infatuation or burn.

My take on a hyptherhical fairy type pseudo legendary pokemon. Considering the plethora of other dragon types, I thought that a fairy-type speculative legendary was long over due to the fact that we don't have a fire-type on either, so that was a definite bonus. Also inspired by Phoenix, sure we have Ho Oh, but you can never have enough of them
