Insulation

Hi All,

What is everyone using for insulation (R rating)? As you can see it’s an unfinished shed for lawn storage / a mini mancave/she shed etc. I have no plans of finishing it into a fully sealed area (dry wall etc) what you see (minus the wires everywhere, that’s since been cleaned up) is what it’ll stay as. I’m in suburban Philly for weather purposes.

Shed base rock recommendations?

Hello shed experts, I’ve dug and built a 10x18 shed base for a 8x16 shed that’s going to be delivered to me soon. I was planning on using 3/4” crushed clean limestone for the rock, which a nearby vendor told me they had available before I started the project. Now that I need it delivered, they sent me this message “I can’t get 3/4 clean, I can get 3/4 minus or roadstone, 3/4 clean or washed is harder to get , it’s reserved the concrete plants, I have 3/8 clean chips in stock , 1” clean, and 3/4 and 1” roadstone”. What would you guys recommend I use to fill it? Thanks in advance!

Shed Renovation Concerns

Backstory: I was asked by a friend to help her work on her son’s 10’ wide x 8’ deep shed; she started out with just wanting the to make the existing 42” door opening a little wider to fit a lawn tractor inside, but ballooned after she ran it thru a.i., she came up with one “inspiration” image. Which had a wide opening with barn doors and separate man door…. she was hyper fixated on matching A. I. (& A.I. would never steer us wrong, right?) /s

Against my better judgement, we ripped the front wall apart and replaced that 120” front wall with mostly holes now. 🫤 This had me concerned due to snow load here in New England.

The ‘new’ openings measure at 65” and 25.5” wide and are just using the double top plates as the header. ( We used 5/8” T1-11 siding and 2x3” was used to reinforce the door slabs. Main structure is fairly solid and was made with 1” plank siding and rough cut 2x4” dimensional framing.

Now I’d like to ask the experts what they think of this engineering? Are my concerns justified or was I just overthinking this?

Mini split question

I’m in the midst of finishing my 10x12 shed and want to have a mini split installed.

The quotes I’ve received seem ridiculous (7-9k).

How DIY are the units I can pick up at one of the big stores?

Any experience or wisdom yall can give me would be greatly appreciated!

Sill plate recommendations

I had a 10x20 shed built by local Amish. (I did the steps and ramp myself so don’t judge too harsh lol). They built the structure but subbed out the door to an overhead door company.

I opted to have a garage door on the end and I’m looking for suggestions on what to use to cover the plywood floor that’s exposed outside of the garage door. The door is 8’ wide and there’s about 6” exposed. The plywood is pressure treated but I’d still prefer something additional to cover it.

I’m sure there is something proper for this purpose, i just can’t seem to find anything or know the right term to search for.

I’d like to find a strip of diamond plate to put down, but that length is pricey to ship and I don’t have a metal yard near me.

Thanks in advance.

Mini Split, wall mount?

I am in the mountains so have to deal with snow. I don't want any hum or vibration inside. Standard pre-built shed, 2x4 with siding. Can I mount it to wall or will I hear it inside the shed. Unit will be on one end of 30' shed. My other option is platform on ground with roof. I can make something simple out of 2x6's and some scrap metal roofing

Somewhat mobile shed to skirt zoning

Ok, so I have to have my shed 5 feet away from property lines. My “fix” is to have a shed I can move with a few guys if the inspector wants to bust chops.

My idea.

Get a 8x10 resin shed from a big box store, plywood floor and then screw pallets to the bottom.

I thoughts are resin will be the lightest material if I need to reposition at any moment. And the pallets will keep it above the lawn and last 5-7 years.

My question.

Is this a good idea? If not please offer pointers or a better idea!

Side wall overhang

Good evening guys on my leanto style shed would a 3 inch overhang be sufficient for the side walls? Google says 6-12 inches my carpenter friends are saying 2-3 inches. If it is more than that how do I support that additional 12 inches to an already framed out roof?

New Shed Builder

I recently posted asking for help because I'm new to building things, let alone a shed. Reddit was my LAST choice to ask for help because I can't stand people on the Internet. But, after seeing other posts and how helpful people were, I got enough confidence to ask for help.

Aside from a few of you who actually tried to give advice or constructive criticism, I instantly regretted it. I'm grateful to those of you who gave me pointers and links to use for plans and what not. But, I took the post down because I got tired of reading how terrible my build was. I noted in my post that I didn't know what I was doing and had to search for videos on YouTube to figure out as much as I had. Just sucks that my last resort ended up being worse than I thought it would be.

I wasn't asking for people to stroke my ego, but it would have been nice to have been given actual helpful advice aside from, "JuSt StArT oVeR" like I have a disposable income. Lesson learned. However, again, I want to thank those of you that gave decent advice. I'm going to attempt the roof today after the adjustments I've made thanks to your guy's advice.

For the majority, maybe stop comparing sizes when someone asks for help.. I get it, you're better.

I was planning to flip the shed and pour concrete instead of wood. Is that a good idea?

Ramp dilemma

Post image
3 Upvotes

I have been trying to solve the problem of my doors being 4" lower than the floor. I really don't want to cut them. My mower can't make the jump. So far, I have thought of building the ramp just below the door bottom and adding another small transition ramp inside that folds up. Also a drawbridge but i can figure out how to fasten in to the floor.

Any thoughts 😕

Best concrete floor to keep clean?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Our shed will be a pottery studio and it's important to keep clay water, glaze, etc cleaned up well since the stuff is very bad to breathe in when dry. If we do a concrete slab and use it as the floor, is there a particular way to finish the concrete that would make the floor the easiest to clean? "Brushed" sounds too textured... ?

Looking for shed manufacturers who can accommodate a 20:12 roof pitch

I’m a landscape architect in North Carolina working for a company that has a patented passive solar greenhouse design. We’re exploring partnerships with shed manufacturers to bring a smaller, prefabricated version to market.

I’ve reached out to a few manufacturers individually, but figured this community might have some recommendations or insights.

A few things we’re looking for:
> 20:12 roof pitch – This has been the biggest challenge so far and is our primary requirement.
> Approximately 10’ x 20’ footprint – Flexible on dimensions.
> Shippable – Open to fully assembled delivery or panelized construction for on-site assembly, depending on what’s most economical.
>Open floor – Strongly preferred so the greenhouse can sit directly on a gravel or concrete base.
>Metal construction and insulation – Both preferred, but not dealbreakers.

Ideally, we’d find a manufacturer in North Carolina or the Southeast, but we’re open to other locations.
We’re also flexible on the business relationship, whether that’s contract manufacturing, licensing the design, or potentially becoming a dealer.

I’ve been listening to a few episodes of the Shed Geek podcast recently, trying to learn more about the industry. It’s been interesting seeing how many different manufacturing and dealership models exist.

Does anyone know of manufacturers who might be capable of something like this, particularly the steep roof pitch? I’d appreciate any recommendations or advice on where to look.

Suncast Modern Base Supplies

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hey all, about to run to the store later this week to pick up the supplies needed for a 5x6 Suncast shed for the backyard. They provide a nice diagram on what is needed, but I wanted to ask about the hardware side (I already have the lumber) of things to make sure I am not missing anything. I live in Massachusetts, and the goal is to build this as close to the ground as possible. Attached is an image of the plans they provide and I do not have a nail gun, or the patience to drive in nails for all of the connections, so I plan on using screws unless somebody here can convince me otherwise haha.

The idea is to remove all organic matter, use compact paver sand & use the tuff blocks, and place the 2x6 directly on the tuff block. I might add a paver below each tuff block for extra ground clearance.

My hardware supply run is as follows:

  1. TuffBlocks x4.
  2. Paver Sand Bags x4
  3. 2x6 Joist Hangers x 8
  4. 2-1/2" Strong-Drive SD Connector Screws x100
  5. Simpson Strong-Tie #12 3" Framing Screws x 100
  6. 1/4" Mesh & Staples for the perimeter dug into the ground to mitigate furry friends from moving in.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

HELP!

Hey yall,

Moved into a new house only to realize, we don't have as much space as we thought. No worries! I need an area for my office as I work from home. First thought, finish the basement- that's insane money. How about a shed? Lots of research and I still feel lost. I definitely am willing to pay more for prefab. I'd like windows or even the ability to put a slider or glass door on the front. 10' X 10'. Thoughts, ideas, suggestions, and directions all welcome!

Different materials

I’ve done a small addition to my shed. It was previously all vinyl siding. That has been removed from all but the rear of the shed and replaced with T1-11. The shed is at the very back of my property and backs up to a wooded area. I would like to keep the rear vinyl. How do I make this corner where the vinyl meets the t1-11 work?

I went to start building my gravel shed base (16x20) for a 12x18 tuff shed. I figured i will need two levels of 4x6 but now that I was ready to start and checked the level I found out it's a 23 inch drop.

What should I do? A 2 foot back wall doesn't seem like a great choice and that's a lot more gravel

Confused about Parking shed roofing

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey guys, I have been erecting second shed. First being the workshop shed where I used GI sheets for roofing. Budget wasn't a constraint there. But now I am tasked to erect a parking shed. I want to diversify my experience by actually experimenting with other roofing materials that may be cost effective option and actually suit the application. Recently, I visited a place where I actually saw this walkway shed. The roofing seemed actually eye-catching. Same roofing was on their parking sheds as well. Can you please help to identify the roofing material and other long lasting but economical and aesthetic option?

Bar shed update 4

Ice/water on the roof, zip board on the sides, windows sealed. Next, I will be removing the sliders, extending the zip board lower around all sides, and permanently installing sliders. Next will be shingles, trim, and siding. I will be adding additional support beams on top of the walls to support them from pushing out, just waiting until the bar is installed. I'd like to use the beam to hang the lighting above the bar. Thanks for all of your suggestions and support. This is turning out to be 5x more time consuming then I originally thought.

Whirlybird or gable vents?

I was thinking about two options for venting my 12x12 storage shed that I'm going to build.

1) A whirlybird vent at the top middle.

2) Two gable vents on either side and possibly putting solar fans on each for airflow.

I hear whirlybirds are great, but I just think they're ugly.

Are they comparable in performance? Are the fans overkill?

Western PA climate if that matters.

Also, do I NEED low intake vents? I've never seen them on any shed in my area before. Just wondering about rain, snow, and critters getting in with those.

Thanks!
