Community Meta Mod post: please, no mushroom ID posts.

Hi everyone - it’s almost autumn, and autumn means mushrooms. We’re beginning to see a good few posts requesting help identifying mushrooms coming up in people’s gardens. The mod team have had a chat and we’ve decided:

Please don’t make posts asking for mushroom identification help.

We’ll be deleting any such posts, just like we do with plant ID requests.

The reason for this decision is that as a sub we’re not expert enough to do this safely. We’ve already had one literally deadly mushroom posted, and a few people suggested it was fine to eat, and we don’t want to see that again.

We’ll leave this post up, and refer anyone posting future mushroom requests to it. With that in mind, here are some useful resources:

  1. DO NOT EAT MUSHROOMS JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE ON THE INTERNET TELLS YOU IT'S SAFE.
  2. Useful subreddits that do take ID requests: https://www.reddit.com/r/mycology and https://www.reddit.com/r/mushroomID
  3. A Facebook group for expert emergency only identification of mushrooms and plants: https://www.facebook.com/groups/144798092849300/?locale=en_GB
  4. There is no substitute for qualified medical expertise. That means 111 in the UK (999 if needed; they’ll triage), your GP or pharmacist in NI, the Poisons Information Centre in the Republic of Ireland, and your local poison control number or equivalent service elsewhere.

Showing Off hello from my nerines and I

Post image
15 Upvotes

Hi all *wave*

Just a quick intro. These are my potted nerines being magnificent one morning this week, it's a superbloom moment for them, normally I have just a few flower spikes. They're underplanted with erigeron and linaria purpurea.

I've moved to my first owned property and forever home a few months ago. As as renter I had an extensive potted garden which was very challenged during this summer's heatwave and hosepipe ban, and I lost most of my nursery.

The nerine lilies were a lovely and welcome surprise after all that heartache. To see something thrive is so encouraging. I also didn't have to do anything special, just keep them alive and make sure they get a lot of sun, their prime requirement. The showing off is almost entirely their work!

I look forward to learning and sharing alongisde you all!
M

Everything identical apart from the pots. Does one pot being glazed account for it?

Tree Care To keep the tree or to not keep the tree? That is the question.

I recently took on a new plot and in one corner a former tenant has planted a tree. It’s quite small right now and rather pretty but, I don’t know what species it is so, I’m worried that over time it will get too big and shade everything else out. I love trees and generally wouldn’t advocate removing one but the plot isn’t very big and I’d like it to be productive. Open to any ideas. Thanks!

New Garden What should I do with new backyard space?

Any ideas what I should plant in this shady patch behind my flat?

Context: just moved into this flat in London, landlord cleared all the weeds from the back garden plot as they were overgrown. Patch is at a bit of a slope and gets very little sunshine. I’m new to gardening looking for advice! Not looking to spend too much, ideally low maintenance plants.

New Garden Soak away not soaking away

I've dug a soak away trench to take 2 crates but the trench isn't draining after filling with rain water. It's heavy clay down to 1m+. I'm below any drain access so there's no option for run off. Has anyone had success fitting a pump to remove water? If so, what did you use? Thanks

New Gardener SOS Hydrangea mildew?

Post image

This is my first year growing a hydrangea but it’s developed what I think is mildew.

I initially removed the affected leaves but seems to still be getting worse.

Is there anything else I should be doing and how can I prevent this?

Thank you!

Showing Off How to remove a massive pampas grass.

- Trim away as much foliage as possible.
- Attach tow rope around base.
- Drive away.
The bugger was 8 foot tall and made baby pampas everywhere. Pops right out of the ground!

New Gardener SOS Gravel garden to grass

We are attempting to turn a large gravel garden into grass. We’ve dug a few holes (not pictured I’m afraid as filled them back in) and beneath the gravel is rocky sandy soil as shown in pic 2 - it stays like that for quite a way.

We are planning to just get rid of the gravel on top, then add ~10cm topsoil, then lay turf if not too expensive (as can use sooner than seed). We are thinking of doing half the garden now, and half at a later date.

Does this sound like an okay plan? Do we need to hire a jackhammer to break up the ground a bit or use a mattock or is this not needed?

New Gardener SOS Can I plant in this?

Post image

I am constantly pulling up new growth in this drain area. It’s moist and weeds seem to thrive in here.

Today as I was pulling the growth out I found a newt. I stopped immediately and have decided to leave its habit alone.

Could I potentially plant around my drain? If yes, what plants would you recommend.

Thank you and sorry for the sore sight of my drain

Winter Prep To mulch, or not to mulch...

Hello, I'm not new to gardening, but probably new to gardening the right way if that makes sense... I think this year is the year I'll actually try and save some perenials over winter in the hope they grow back. Im in Essex and its still pretty warm down here (it'll be 20 degrees today) but should i mulch the borders now or should I wait?

New Gardener SOS Wasps attracted to pears- any advice

I have a couple of pear trees and there are a lot of wind fallen pears coming off them. Over the last couple of days the wasps have gone mad feasting on them. I have since piled them up and buried then in old grass clippings, but is there anything else i can do to discourage the wasps?

Hello.

We had some crazy winds yesterday that snapped off a large chunk of my Euphorbia. Is it possible to propagate this somehow? Do I need to cut and propagate each individual stem?

Thanks in advance

New Gardener SOS Help with overgrown shrub garden.

This is the south facing fence on a north garden. It’s mostly made up of shrubs that all merge into each other. Where do u start with tidying it up? I’d like it to have a defined edge with the grass and more layers to it. Totally amateur, no idea where to start or what to do. Thanks!

New Garden Blank Canvas

Got the keys to my new house today and excited to get to work on this lovely blank canvas. South West facing. No lawn is a plus for me due to my disability but have more space for container planting and greenery on both sides. My first time having a front garden as well!

Any recommendations or ideas welcome as this sub has been a wealth of inspiration over the last couple of years. Priorities are low maintenance container gardening (more accessible for me) although I do have some borders along the hedge line in both sides and the back wall in the back garden. And lots of colour and general nice stuff to look at, plus supporting pollinators and wildlife.

Will be cracking on with spring bulbs ASAP next week although still quite mild up here anyway (North West England).

Winter Prep What to do with container fuchsia?

I have 3 fuchsias that were bought as small bedding plants in 2025 to put in containers. They did OK, then I just left them over winter. When clearing out containers this spring they looked dead but I noticed tiny leaves from the main stem/centre, so I repotted them and pruned the longer stems which seemed genuinely dead/dry. They didn't do much over the summer but have grown well and flowered since the end of the very hot spell.

Would transplanting them to a bed/border be worthwhile? I don't have a greenhouse or cold frame for the winter, but I have a sunny central bed or a north facing border that's a bit rooty from shrubs. It would be great if they weren't starting from scratch next year.

Winter Prep Bulb supplier recommendations?

Hi all

I'm looking for a good amount of flowering bulbs for spring. Not too fussed about the variety, but mainly thinking of tulips and daffodils of course. Where do you go for bulk buying bulbs at a good price? I'm in South London but online recommendations would be brilliant.

Thanks!

Hello friends! I planted lavender earlier this year but half of the plant looks rather unhappy. What is the reason for this? I’m new to gardening.
