I can’t get burned music cds to play

I’ve been trying to burn some music CDs. I’m using .wav on CD-R at 10x burn speed(lowest i can do). every time I try to open it, it fails on the login and gives me the black Sony screen (fearful harmony). Except for one time earlier in the process when I was using, MP3 and it managed to boot up to the CD player, but it only read as one track and couldn’t play any audio.

Any advice?
(My ps1 plays burned games no problem although I did no modifications from the time I bought it nor did I burn those games)

Old school PS ONE slim modding

Post image
86 Upvotes

Had this since I was a kid and always wondered how I could play games off CD roms my grandparents got me from the computer swap-meet markets. Learned much later in life they got someone to "chip" it. Always wondered what exactly they did to mod it to make it work as this was about 25 years ago. Finally curiosity got to me and I opened it up. Some very old school and questionable quality of one of the soldering wires 😅 but none the less interesting to see as I'd expect now a days there are much simpler methods to modding it haha

I've had a bunch of JPN PSX games for a while now, through my dad's old binder full of them. As a birthday present I decided I wanted to finally play them, so I got myself a PSOne and a SD2PSX to do so, alongside inheriting the binder in it's entirely.

This is my second PSOne, actually. The first, which I got in person through a shop in my town, had issues reading games (the laser module wasn't moving at all, looking back) and some serious rust problems inside. Returned it, got this one off of eBay and it's been smooth sailing since, thankfully. Been fun playing Rockman X3 - X5 on this, alongside Symphony of The Night and getting to experience the glory known as Pepsiman, lmao.

Searching for a PS1 game where you control a small mech like robot around platforms

Ive looked everywhere and been on forums
I cannot find this game, i remember when i was a kid this had the weirdest name, you basically control this little mech robot which i believe had a pointy head, it was like a platform based game, i dont know why but the closest representation of this game i can describe possible is the online game gyroball instead of a gyroball it was a small mech robot

Any ideas ?

Why are these 2 memory cards so different?

I bought 2 Nuby memory cards online, there was inly one picture in the listing so I assumed they'd be the same. On the left one, there's a date code of 2000.6.15 and the right one has a date code of 01/07/28. The left one looks less clean, like someone made it by hand? The right one looks more factory-made. Any clue? Thanks!

What is Your PSX Comfort Game?

What PSX game is one you can always return to for warm, fuzzy, nostalgic feelings?

I feel this way about Spyro and Spyro 2. Both have amazing music, laidback difficulty and beautiful low-poly PS1 vibes - leaning towards dreamy and ethereal.

Having made a video about Spyro 2 just recently: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5F2tsfkdT34& I have been thinking back on just how beautifully comforting the home worlds in that game are. I love the peaceful ambient music and low-stakes platformer exploration.

Cartload: memory card backup from the browser

Thumbnail

Hi. One of my hobby projects is cartload.org. It’s a browser app for backing up cartridges from various systems with a GBxFlash and (optionally) Analogue Pocket adapters.

Recently, I added support for backup of PS1 memory cards with the Sony Memory Card Adaptor (CECHZM1). You can back up a whole card to .mcr, or individual save files to .mcs. No support for writing data back yet, though it would be possible.

It uses WebUSB, which is available on Blink browsers: mainly Chrome, Edge, and Opera. This includes Chrome on Android, but not iOS.

I’m not totally sure I’ve implemented everything correctly. I’m pretty sure the .mcr dumps should be good. For .mcs, I support non-contiguous files and broken sector remapping, but I don’t actually have applicable cards to test with.

Currently the interface needs work. The app was originally built around backing up cartridges, which always have ROM data and sometimes save data. But, if you have the adapter, and need a quick backup, give it a try.

Now that I've played it, this is is one of my favorite horror games now. It's honestly one of the most unique horror games I've ever played NSFW

I heard about this game in a YouTube video maybe 7 or so years ago and then one day I found a copy on a European video game website and luckily they were able to ship to the US! Basically, it's a 1st person survival horror game where you play as a Japanese school girl that survives a train explosion and then gets stuck in a creepy backrooms / liminal space city. The city is full of really odd NPCs and there's also word of a cult going around kidnapping people. A lot of the citizens of this bizarre area are convinced that doomsday is coming and they say really weird shit to you. The dialogue can be really eerie or even really funny at times.

So for the gameplay, you basically need to explore this super creepy city, talk to these weird NPCS, gather clues, and solve puzzles to try and get back home. Oh but there's a catch. There's a huge mutant creature that is going around killing people and that includes you!

The creature itself doesn't look too scary, but the way it behaves really makes it scary. For one, it will make a subtle but loud huffing noise when it's near you. The thing is you often know it's near but you're not quite sure where. Then it will stop making noises entirely and just show up in the corner of your eye and start chasing you. Oh and I mean chasing you! This bastard lunges at you and even Naruto runs. It's fast and if it catches you, you're dead!

The way they integrate the creature is also very interesting. Basically, there's scripted events where it shows up, but it also shows up randomly too. it really adds a lot of unpredictability and makes the game really unnerving to play in the best way.

Besides the creature, what makes the game really interesting is you can have one companion with you and which companion you end up with will affect your ending. I say end up with because you start out with Naomi and if the creature gets you, she dies permanently. Then if she dies you can have a different companion. Each companion you have will comment on NPCs and story events, which adds a lot of replay value, on top of the multiple endings.

While you're making your way through the game, all of the environments are very samey-looking and mazelike, but it actually adds to the horror and really makes the locations feel eerie and unsettling. There's a ton of fog too, which is intentional and it gives the game a really creepy vibe. The environments really do remind me of those creepy liminal spaces that inspired those backrooms games, except this game was made way before backrooms was even a thing. Also, the music is very creepy and sparse. It plays, then it stops completely, and then it starts again. It feels very unnerving and it fits the game perfectly.

This game also does the survival horror thing that I love, which is making you piece together the story by finding clues and analyzing everything. The game doesn't beat you over the head with the story and it's pretty light on cutscenes and I absolutely believe it works in the game's favor. it makes the story a lot more creepy because you're basically slowly learning little tid-bits here and there and gathering all the clues to piece the story together yourself. I love this narrative design and I wish more games would use it.

The last thing that I really appreciate about this game is that there's just nothing else quite like it. It's very unique, especially for the time it was released. The closest thing I can compare it to would be Alien Isolation, except you can never fight back in Hellnight. All you can do is run away and hope the creature doesn't catch you. I would also compare it to Clock Tower and Haunting Ground, except the 1st person view, liminal space settings, and dark PS1 graphics really make the game stand out on its own. I would also say it kind of reminds me of a survival horror version of Kowloon's Gate, if anyone has heard of that.

This is genuinely one of the coolest and most interesting survival horror games I've ever played. It is obscure as hell though. Like seriously, it doesn't get much more obscure than this. This gem of a game is absolutely buried. I hope that more people can experience it, even if it has to be through emulation. Europe and Japan got a really cool survival horror game that the US totally missed out on and it's absolutely a shame. This should by all means be a cult classic imo. The problem is it's just too obscure and no one talks about it. This is the perfect game to play for the spooky season.

Also here's some super in-depth videos if anyone is interested in the game and wants to know more about it:

I think I've made a really original poster, turning myself into a PS1 character with a custom save screen with my life milestones! Thoughts?

I've always loved the classic 90s Tomb Raider 1 passport save screen, so I decided to recreate the whole UI from scratch as a piece of wall art for my flat.
I converted my own likeness into a polygonal model for the background and passport photo slot, and filled the "Select Level" slots with my life milestones.
I'm thinking of printing and framing an A4 copy for my wall this week!
Let me know your thoughts! :)

Permanently missable items in Spider-Man?

I’m planning on playing Spider-Man for PS1 for the first time, after seeing Cosmonaut Variety Hour’s video about it. I like going for 100% completion, but I haven’t been able to find any information about permanently missable items that I’d need to look out for. Without spoiling too much, is there anything I need to worry about?

PICOSTATION PS1 PU8 EARLY SCHEME TUTORIAL

Firstly:

I strongly recommend fully recapping the mainboard and the power supply before starting the tutorial.

In this diagram/tutorial, I am using megavolt85's overclock version (credits to the wizard). However, if you don't want to use the overclock version, simply ignore point (R) and use the standard firmware; you also won't need to remove certain components from the top of the board—everything is clearly explained in the tutorial image.

I gathered information from various sources, worked on my own consoles, and finally found the time to create a schematic for the community. I hope it helps many of you. Unfortunately, the early PU8 board had been overlooked, so I created a complete schematic. I apologize if something similar already exists in the community; moderators, please feel free to close this thread if it is a duplicate.

Download the image to your computer for better viewing; it is a very large file.

ENJOY!
