Salary Increase -Worth it?

Question for folks. Currently making around 200ish per year no OT and home every night. Recently got a job offer for week in week off with comp around 300k. Would you give up being home every night for an extra 100k per year?

My wife is against it and so are my kids. But thats a significant amount of money. Thoughts?

Update: wow this seems overwhelming in support of staying put. I was only asking cause I was curious of the feedback. Probably stay where I am

Technical Power generation in an Oil field - requirement

I’m trying to better understand how power generation capacity is determined for an oil production field. How do you determine the right power generation capacity for an oil field?

Power demand changes over the life of a field, and so can the availability of fuel gas.

This makes me curious about how designers balance:

a) Peak electrical demand

b) Early, mid, and late field life operating cases

c) Fuel gas availability

d) Generation redundancy and availability

Which field life scenario ultimately governs the sizing of the power generation system?

And is the peak demand generally expected during early life, mid-life, or late life, or is there no typical answer?

I’d appreciate insights from those with experience in offshore power systems, process design, or field development.

What do Engineers do on Oil rigs?

Im currentley a mechanical engineering student. But I got a lot of love for blue collar work especially running heavy duty equipement machinery, I even have my own small residential excavation buisness in summer when theres no school. I also like mechanically stuff I did a engine overhall on my 4 stroke honda jumping jack.

That being said Rigging appeals me, I heard Mechanical Engineers are there, what type of job do they do other than office work? Whats the closest hands on work they do?

Automation in the fields

Hey fellas, I’ve been looking at getting into the oilfield preferably as a floorhand or casing hand, and I was wondering what you guys think about automation and robotics in the industry.

Do you think machines are going to take away a lot of oilfield jobs over the next 5–10 years? Would you still recommend getting into the industry today if you were starting out with no experience?

Just curious to hear what you guys think. Thanks!

Thanks.

Technical Pipeline Engineers - What Do You Replace in the Event of a Fire?

I work for a valve manufacturer. My engineer and I were wondering, if your line caught on fire, how much of the line would you replace? We agreed soft seated ball valves are gone, but what about metal seated valves?

Took Pouch Recommendations

Everyday I carry around 16in channel locks, a 8in dog bone, a 8in pipe wrench, wire snips, and nickel tape. The plant I work at is really cracking down on keeping tools in our pockets bc of chemical exposure and stuff. Does anyone have any recommendations of some belt pouches that can hold this stuff?

Career Advice BP Technical Interview Details?

I have a technical interview with BP for the Supply, Trading, and Shipping Graduate Program, Analytics in Houston next Wednesday.

I was wondering if anyone knows what the technical interview is like?

Is it a live LeetCode-style coding assignment or just asking questions, and if so, what kinds of questions?

Thanks!

Marathon Salt Lake City

Strongly considering moving from an east coast refinery operator job at full pay to start anew in Utah. Was wondering if it is in fact, DuPont schedule and how quickly you can progress to operator rate. Also are they undermanned? Will I be filling a post on overtime the second I'm qualified? Thanks! (I'm not an OT whore and am looking to spend all my days off skiing...) Haha

Mexico Expat Rate

Hello, is there anyone working as an expat in project development in Mexico? What is a typical expat lead position for operator (18 years of experience, major capital projects)? I'm expecting around net US $1000/day + allowance. Is it too much for Mexico?

Whats wireline like in Alaska

I recently took a temp contract with to do wireline in Alaska from November to April. I was curious if anyone has any advice for my first time in deadhorse. What did you guys think about your time there? what were the camps like? Any QOL items you would recommend bringing, what gear do they provide(they told me they provide everything i don’t believe it)

The company is paying for travel to and from home with a 3 and 3 schedule. The work is mainly going to be pipe recovery and open hole logging. Personally Im excited about the opportunity to learn some new things and experience a different kind of wireline than what I do in the DJ

Frustration in finding curious people in the industry

It's been over 2-3 weeks in genuinely trying to find a technical cofounder for my oilwell interventions startup, What are some tips I could use?

I have the network, the location (I'm in Norway, my family and a lot of network based in Dahran), Money is not a big deal these days.

Just finding a person who's even remotely interested in a side project till full time post-raise feels so impossible.

Any tips?

Shampoos/Laundry Detergent for oil?

My boyfriend takes samples of oil for his job. He enjoys it and makes good money, however, he constantly smells like oil. I’m pretty sure it’s mostly his clothes and his hair, even though he doesn’t get oil on himself while working.

I think it’s the fumes (oil, jet fuel, etc.). Does anyone know good shampoos and laundry detergents to get rid of this smell?
